The PlayStation 3 is available in France since March 23, 2007. After the PS One and PS2, Sony has every intention to win once again a leader in game consoles worldwide. But for the XXI century mode, it is mandatory for a manufacturer like Sony converging digital entertainment and computer technology. This digital convergence is successful mission by the PS3!

The PS3 has thus new digital technology and able to crack all video gamers and movie fans the most demanding at the same time.

In terms of information, the PS3 has a Cell processor, very powerful, developed by Sony, Toshiba and IBM. His abilities allow him to manage the games most powerful in terms of graphics. The PS3 includes a hard disk 60 GB which applications are obvious: storage of data, Internet downloading and improved load times for games.

Regarding digital entertainment, the PS3 can play HD DVDs with a DVD player Blu-ray. The Blu-ray is an optical disc that can hold 250 GB of storage (cons 4.7 GB for DVD Classic), and provides access to high definition. The PS3 can also connect to the Internet through its embedded web browser.

The game console PlayStation 3 now has a novella joystick. In fact it is simply an evolution of the Dualshock called Sixaxis. Level design, no change. For cons the Sixaxis controller features Bluetooth technology, which allows its owners happy to play wirelessly. Why Sixaxis? Because it uses technology to detect movements of 6 axes, from left to right, top to bottom and front to rear. The L2 and R2 buttons are larger and analog to give a different reaction depending on the pressure exerted by the user. A new button has been added: the PS button that allows you to turn on or off the game console without moving and also reset the PS3. Finally, simply connect the Sixaxis controller to the USB port of the console to recharge.

The PlayStation 3 is the subject of the moment to buy because it meets all the digital entertainment and for the whole family.

I recently bought a PS3 and have been muddling my way through the unimpressive library of PS3 exclus

I recently bought a PS3 and have been muddling my way through the unimpressive library of PS3 exclusive titles. Having had an XB360 since early 2006 and a Wii for nearly as long, the PS3 and I have a lot of time to make up together.

Just recently I rented and beat Heavenly Sword, a “first generation” (meaning one of the first releases) title for the PS3. As mentioned here and elsewhere on this blog, I have gotten to run through a few titles on the console that heavily use the Wiimote sensor. When Sony announced the Sixaxis controller, critics immediately saw the feature as a gimmick that would try to rival the Wiimote, and pitifully at that. But now that this faithful critic and all around observer has had a chance to lay hands on both, what’s the verdict?

To emphasize the point, I am only comparing one PS3 game to every Wii game I’ve ever played. Very unfair odds on either account, but I’ve noticed some very interesting things that have led me to believe there may be a clearer winner than someone may think.

There are two main factors (that I have made up, along with most of the other terms in this article, in my benevolence and wise observance – any resemblance to terms or arguments in existence was unintended or accidental) in the success of unusual game mechanics. The first and foremost is the talent, skill, and imagination of the developers, or at least what appears to be the talent, skill, and imagination. When Assassin’s Creed, a game that hyped the cloak and dagger aspect of the player’s character, allowed only three ways to execute cloak and dagger techniques, otherwise forcing the character to fight enemies rather than evade them, the gimmick actually broke the game’s promise and doomed it to $60 worth of mediocrity. At first glance, one might see this as evidence of the lack of imagination on the game designer’s part, but Ubisoft claimed that time restraints kept them from building the game they wanted to build, which forced them to put in shoddy achievements/trophies to artificially extend gameplay. Whether it was the skill of the designers or the interference of other factors, the designers failed to execute the game mechanic well (though I know plenty who would disagree – at least accept this as an example).

The other main factor in the success of unusual game mechanics is fit. “Does this game mechanic actually fit into the context of the game?” This is where the Wii successfully fails a lot. Though the most recent game I played on the Wii was Super Smash Brothers Brawl, which smartly made the Wiimote optional and Wiimote gestures even more optional, there are plenty of examples to be found of the Wiimote motion sensor being shoehorned into a game. Wii games like Raving Rabbids, a party-style title made up of small mini-games, are perfect for Wii controls. Yet other games, especially third party multi-console releases like Tomb Raider: Underworld, suffer due to the requirement of having the Wiimote gestures featured in games where it doesn’t belong.

Now that I’ve defined what I see as the two factors influencing unusual game mechanics, it’s time to apply them to the PS3 Sixaxis controller and the Wii Wiimote. Let’s pretend that we’re in a gaming utopia where these two factors have been executed well. Full of creativity and fit for combat, when put in a ring, which of the two survives?

As I said earlier, the only game that I have played that used the Sixaxis controls extensively was Heavenly Sword. Because of this and the fact that I beat it yesterday afternoon, it will be the point from which all of my Wiimote comparisons are drawn. To start, let’s go beyond fit and into the realm of integration.

Integration, or making a mechanic an essential and even desirable facet of gameplay, is something that the Wii usually does fairly well. In The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Link’s bow and arrow are easily used by pointing the Wiimote at the screen and pressing a button. Granted, it looked nothing at all like shooting a bow, but that is completely beside the point. The controls had been integrated to a point where their implementation was usually easy and mostly effortless.

In Heavenly Sword, a button mashing beat-em-up that sometimes puts on a flight simulator’s jet pilot’s jumpsuit and runs around the room screaming “raawrrwaeerreeer rat-tat-tat-tat-tat!“, the sixaxis controls are integrated in one instance surprisingly well and in another surprisingly poorly. In the former pressing and holding square or “x” (depending on context) while handling a long-range weapon will zoom the camera in behind the projectile (this varies among rockets, cannonballs, and arrows, along with a few other extraneous objects thrown in). While in this zoomed-in state, the player can start tilting the controller, gently driving the projectile (thus the flight sim reference) to the desired destination…sometimes. This mechanic increasingly becomes more of a skill rather than a cool addition as the game progresses, and this helps with the mechanic’s integration into gameplay. If the mechanic is mostly optional, then it becomes unnecessary and becomes a forgettable option. While Heavenly Sword’s projectile-driving, so to speak, is technically optional, the game is nearly impossible without it, as there is no reticule to aim at very small, very far away targets. The other instance in which the Sixaxis is used but is integrated very poorly is in actual combat. Some of the combos require shaking the controller at the right moment as part of the combo button chain. In the heat of battle, it seems silly to try and shake the controller a certain way to pull off a small number of moves that require it.

That last bit about poor integration also hits on another area that is intrinsically tied with the idea of integration – and this is implementation, be it awkward or convenient. The awkwardness factor of shaking a controller in mid-combat is high, but it is rather small potatoes compared to some of the ways Wii games have integrated Wiimote controls. I’m not sure if Nintendo forces Wii developers to include Wiimote specific gestures, but if they do, they are certainly the reason for the awkward implementation of the controls within Wii games. As I mentioned before, this awkwardness is almost a given when it comes to multi-platform releases.

There is a lot to be said for all of these factors, but at its base, it’s all about design. Depending on the strength of designs, whatever is built on top of it could be as stable as bunker or a house of cards. Though the Wiimote is no card table, it certainly doesn’t have the foundation for a bunker either. Because most games require the Wiimote to be held in one hand and its companion nunchuck in the other, the probability that the player’s hand won’t be in the proper starting position is very high, and the Wiimote depends on starting in a certain position, otherwise the controls are off (thus why it’s possible to golf in WiiSports while holding the controller in a number of positions varying from a “ping-pong champion” position to a “holy water flick of the wrist” position). The Wiimote, while brilliant in its concept and marketability, leaves a lot to be desired. And woe betide the designer who doesn’t tighten up the controls enough when dealing with the Wiimote – with the combination of card table + cards, the whole thing comes tumbling down.

Yet here, exactly where I thought the Sixaxis would fail, is where the it shines. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the reason the Sixaxis controller is closer to a bunker than a card table is because it’s held with two hands. It’s a shame that it might be that simple, but, to put it mathematically, the Wiimote in one hand is to a line through one point as the Sixaxis in two hands is to a line through two points. A line through one point has infinitely possibilities for its direction, and that causes a lot of unpredictability and instability. A line through two points has a defined course and has built in stability from those two points. Or to put it non-mathematical terms, that s*** won’t work unless you’re holding it with two hands.

The Sixaxis integration and implementation in Heavenly Sword isn’t perfect, but not once did I have to “reset” my hands to regain control of the mechanic, where as I have not had a casual gaming experience with the Wiimote that I didn’t have to. I don’t necessarily expect these mechanics to be perfect, and I still think the Wiimote was the best innovation to come out of this generation of console gaming. But when you’re first to do something, that means that you’ve given people a goal to shoot for and surpass. The Sixaxis is certainly no Wiimote, not by a long shot, but it offers a few crucial things that the Wiimote, if it had come out a few years later, probably would have had in the bag.

So for now, off of the basis of one PS3 game vs. ten or so Wii games , I have to say that the Sixaxis was the most fun I’ve had with a motion sensing controller so far in this console generation. There are surely Wii games that integrate these controls far better than I have given them credit for (in fact, if you know of any, please suggest them in the comments – I’m completely willing to revisit this later on), but Heavenly Sword’s use of the Sixaxis mechanic wins this round.

We’ll see how long that lasts.

Ainda assim, nunca vi objetivo algum no Sixaxis.

Duncan Boswell: Firstly: AVD is Latin for “I hear, I see: I learn”, and it refers to the cognitive processes in playable experiences; from audio/visual cues to the resulting learnt and understood rules of play.

For every new emergent gameplay mechanic, players must learn to except and abide by the new rules of play, when players are properly introduced and taught a new mechanic it allows them to interact comfortably and logically as we do in “real life”.

The “Wii” is a great example of successful innovation through education, Nintendo have now drawn in a huge previously untouched demographic of non-gamers to “gesture sensitive controls” by creating a casual genre that reiterates the same simple (and once innovative) gameplay mechanics that the core-games evolved from.

This in itself is the inspiration for AVD…to advance the interactive medium by introducing an innovative mechanic that will transcend into other games, extending the capability of player interaction and logically reinforcing their integration in the experience.

BA: What’s the focus of the game? Story, gameplay, the experience?

Duncan Boswell: The main focus is our simple new core mechanic: a player controlled avatar centre of gravity. AVD is essentially a platform-based parkour 3rd-person adventure that allows the player to control the character’s balance and rotation through the use of the 6Axis. With pitch, yaw and roll controlling the avatar respectively. The game world and story were built from the bottom-up to emphasis and facilitate this new mechanic.

The game world is a sandbox metropolis called “Heden”, a dynamic interchangeable environment powered by digital technology and capable of shifting layout and location at will. Perfect for that free-running spirit.

The player assumes the role of one of four main characters; they are educated on the history and function of the city then are let loose to explore Heden. As the story progress, the characters (and player) learn the secret of this world, changing their quest of simple exploration into a sinister web of deceit which ultimately threatens their existence.

BA: Is this just a concept or is this actually going to go into development?

Duncan Boswell: AVD has finished the proof of concept stage and as with many new game-concepts, we are currently developing a prototype of the mechanic to stir up interest, regrettably we do not yet have a confirmed publisher, date or finished prototype. However I can honestly say…I guarantee you will at one time have the opportunity to play this on your PS3. Please watch this space. : )

BA: Why did you choose this particular art style?

Duncan Boswell: The proof of concept trailer is just a simple example of some of the desired environments, what isn’t explained in the trailer is the contrast destined for the full game. Heden is a beautiful organic city, lush with flora and fauna, however beneath the exterior it is run by advanced digital technology which personifies itself as digitally created levels, designed specially to challenge the player/character.

This beautiful lush world is simply too extensive to flesh out and a tad superficial at this “whitebox” stage of development. It’s truly a shame not to be able to justify the vision fully, but the core gameplay is what we’re trying to establish just now, so we decided to show it in a simple version of these digital levels.

At this stage I should mention that development for AVD did begin before the marketing for “Mirror’s edge” was released, and that blocked colours are as much a conventional design theory in games as they are colour theory in art. Admittedly, “Mirror’s edge” and AVD look quite similar on the surface but are fundamentally very different experiences, anyway its nice to see that various developers are focused on achieving similar innovations in the industry…I guess it means we’re all on the right track and it certainly helps make the change run smoother.

BA: Why choose the PSN marketplace?

Duncan Boswell: AVD was intentionally designed for the PS3, not just for the functionality of the Sixaxis but also for the network service. Although we might have delusions of grandia and a paper cased collector’s edition released worldwide to an AAA market, we are actually more realistic.

The PSN is an exceptional opportunity for indie developers to “test the water” and produce games/demos quicker and cheaper which reach an audience that otherwise might not have given them a second glance.

With the average full downloadable game costing just $7 and only about 2 new releases every week, indie developers can undercut the cost and time taken to develop a larger budget title.

And with no hidden subscription fees, it’s almost a “no-brainer”.

BA: How does the game control with the SIXAXIS?

Duncan Boswell: Ok…imagine a conventional action adventure, a nicely laid out world with plenty of ledges, platforms and pitfalls. The player traverses the world with a simple 3rd person control system (i.e.) run, jump, climb dodge etc. Now this could soon become mundane and withdraw the player’s interest, simply because non interactive animations are just dead gameplay.(i.e.)Push “climb” button then wait 3 secs for animation to finish before the player is back in control.

Now imagine the same control system (avatar position) with gesture sensitive controls (avatar axis). The player leaps from a roof then tilts the SIXAXIS forwards or backwards to stretch out the arms or feet in preparation for the landing. They can also flick the pad to perform flips, rolls or spins. On flat ground simply tilting the controller will lean the avatar forwards or backwards, against walls and round corners. Players could prepare for jumps and interactions or vault objects from particular directions.

In essence this is the nature of parkour: to explore your surroundings and learn to use the procedural capability of the human body. This is also the core of AVD; we want to give the player the chance to immerse themselves with a dynamic world through a responsive and logical control scheme.

BA: Some of the feedback hasn’t been the best what could you say to those people who are doubtful?

Duncan Boswell: I’ve had my share of ups and downs as far as feedback goes, but I won’t let it get to me. Even if everyone raved on about the concept, the implemented game could still come up short and fail to impress.

That the risk with innovation, the end product must be intuitive and fun enough not only to attract players but to keep them engaged in the experience.

The community is right to be skeptical, and we expected it to some degree, but please don’t let early perception or your first impression keep your mind closed to new ideas. The proof is always in the playtest.

BA: Is there anything more you could say about the game?

Duncan Boswell: I could go on for days but the only thing I would like to add is an apology. I am sorry if anyone broke their controller trying to twist it like the teaser trailer shows.

This was an early and now benched idea to showcase a new peripheral called the “Reflex pad”. The new controls it brings could very well be another revolutionary step in the gesture-sensitive field, but for now its just too much innovation for one game to handle.

As such, we are not developing it further so you won’t be seeing it again But please remember the way to advance the industry is to take chances, to try new things and to not always play it safe.

As I was digging some dirt on Sony latest incarnation of the Playstation Portable, I came across the

As I was digging some dirt on Sony latest incarnation of the Playstation Portable, I came across these interesting articles from SCEE’s press center

1st: PSP® go PSP® (PLAYSTATION®PORTABLE) EVOLVES TO MATCH THE DIGITAL LIFESTYLE
The link contains more details regarding PSPgo. Here’s some of the good parts,

users will also be able to access and download a variety of entertainment content via their PCs using Media Go, a new software application. Media Go will enable users to access and download entertainment content on PlayStation Store via their PCs as well to easily manage PSP content on PCs, including games, videos, photos, and music.

Finally, a decent management tool for your PSP contents.

a new music application specific to PSP that uses the “SensMe™ channels” music recommendation feature, developed by Sony, also becomes available for download on PSP. With this music application, users will be able to enjoy their favorite music stored on their PSP through a rich user interface, designed exclusively for PSP. “SensMe channels” is a mood based music recommendation system that categorizes music content into channels such as “Relax,” “Dance” and “Upbeat,” and recommends music playlists for users.

I’ll be free from the stupid music player of the PSP. I just wish it could sense my “Anger” over Sony.

when closed, original applications for PSPgo, such as a clock and calendar is displayed on the screen. Users can also enjoy video and music when the panel is closed.

Cool, I have a $250 clock and calendar, but I still have to conserve battery life, so I might as well put it on sleep.

PSPgo has unique features such as game sleep function which enables users to operate XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) while pausing gameplay temporarily.

Took sometime before they realized this one.

Bluetooth function will also allow users to connect Bluetooth standard peripherals such as head-phones and head-set as well as PS3 wireless controller (DUALSHOCK®3 and SIXAXIS®) to be used when watching video content on TVs via PSP at home

Seriously, this feature is the coolest of them all. The ability to use a real controller is much sensible than actually using the controllers on the PSPgo or even the PSP. You could also connect a wireless headphone. Now your free from cables, but say goodbye to battery life, then again, you could plug your PSP to an AC adapter.

One of the products within PSPgo’s peripheral line-up is a new Cradle (PSP-N340) that will become available in stores worldwide concurrently with the release of PSPgo. This new Cradle enables users to charge the PSPgo battery and also enjoy watching video and listening to music. Also included in the peripheral line-up are video-out port cables that enable users to enjoy games and videos on their TVs at home.

Yet again more reasons for Sony to cash in from the consumers.

If you could readon the link that I posted above, it also contains most of the details on the specifications of PSPgo. Here’s some worth noting.
- It slimmer and lighter (duhhh).
- No upgrade on clockspeed and RAM (probably to able still use the current development kits for PSP1000, 2000, 3000.
- Memory Stick Micro™(M2™) slot so say goodbye to your Memory Stick PRO’s

But wait there’s more. Now comes the other press release of Sony. SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT FURTHER BOOSTS ITS SUPPORT FOR SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT
In an attempt to lure more developers to develop games for their new hardware but old platform, they made price drops on their development kits. So if you’ve got some spare cash amounting to $1,500, why not start making games. (you still need to have a licensing agreement with SCE to purchase those dev kits).

Oh well the sarcasm never ends.

Xbox 360 Full Body Motion-Sensing Announced

by Team OXCGN

©2009 Oxcgn.com

It seems the rumours were right on this one! Microsoft has just announced the new motion camera ‘Project Natal‘ at their keynote to bring a new dimension to future Xbox 360 games.

While the Wii was an instant hit for its ‘Wiimote’, there was always a lack of accuracy as it could only interpret basic motions, and only in the hand holding it or the nunchuk.

Microsoft has clearly been thinking ahead and introduced a new solution – camera motion sensing that can take into account minute movements from all limbs, and without the danger of flinging a controller into your precious HDTV (how many images of TVs with Wiimotes smashed through the screen have we seen?).

While the EyeToy dabbled in camera sensing last generation, it never reached the true potential for detecting a players movements because of its low capture quality and low developer support for anything beyond minigames. The Ps2 hardware would also have been unable to keep up with analysing constant image frames of a high quality, instead relying on larger movement estimations.

With the new technology Microsoft should be taking motion control to a whole new level as they seek to break into the Wii’s lucrative casual market. Here at OXCGN however, we’re more interested in the possibilities for so-called ‘hardcore’ games.

The potential is limitless: imagine positioning your hands as if pointing a pistol, before holding it up to your eyes to stare down the sight. The motion camera could see these tiny movements and let the game react to even the smallest movements such as an unsteady aim if you’re not still, or firing with the squeeze of your trigger finger in midair.

If anything, the motion camera demonstrates that Microsoft aren’t resting on their laurels or ignoring the rest of this generation in favour of launching a new console early as many think. Sure they didn’t get into the motion-sensing craze as early as Nintendo or Sony’s Sixaxis in their controller – they waited until they could get it right, and evidently that time is now.
