El pasado fin de semana, 14 y 15 de noviembre, se llevó a cabo la primera edición del festival de música reggae y ska, el Jah Fest, el cuál se postula a favor de la conciencia ecológica.

El sábado se abrieron las puertas desde las 11 de la mañana, hora en que llegaron las primeras personas para ser parte de este gran evento en donde hubo buena música acompañada de una causa: promover el movimiento ecológico para preservar la vida de nuestro planeta.

Las bandas Vibra Mucha, Royal Club y Los Aguas Aguas fueron quienes dieron la bienvenida al público, que conforme transcurría la mañana iba llegando para tomar un lugar en la explanada cubierta con pasto que te invitaba a recostarte mientras escuchabas la música en vivo.

Posteriormente se presentaron los Afro Brothers quienes convencieron al público con sus ritmos de reggae.

Después le siguió People Project, una banda donde participa ‘El Queso’ acompañado por músicos brasileños, quienes sin duda imprimen su estilo bossa nova y lograron emocionar al público y hasta hacerlo bailar.

Zona Ganjah, desde Argentina, continúo con lo que habían empezado las demás bandas, con su estilo reggae y el tono chillón del vocalista lograron mantener al público cautivo.

Posteriormente se presentaron Antidoping y Salón Victoria, quienes ya tenían a un público enganchado y dispuesto a entregarse en cada nota. Ellos eran el preámbulo para lo que sería el final de este primer día de conciertos.

Ya llegada la noche, le tocó el turno a El Gran Silencio, quienes tuvieron un grato recibimeinto, por lo que cuando llegó el cierre a cargo de los Skatalites la gente estaba totalmente prendida. Finalmente el primer día concluyó con éxito, ya que se cumplió el cometido de ofrecer buen show y lograr concurrencia a las actividades ecológicas.

En una conferencia de prensa los músicos hablaron sobre la importancia de ser parte de un festival como el Jah Fest y de las expectativas que tienen con el evento.

Como lo mencionamos anteriormente los próximos 14 y 15 de noviembre se realizará el Jah Fest, el primer festival que se hace en México con una verdadera conciencia ecológica y que además tiene como protagonistas el reggae y el ska.

Lo interesante de esta combinación es que el ska es un género musical de protesta, mientras que el reggae es más ecologista; por lo que la combinación es ideal para los fines del Jah Fest.

Pablo Molina, una figura que representa al movimiento rastafari, expresó que “la idea central en que muchos (los músicos que participarán) coincidimos es sobre el cuidado del planeta”.

Tanto Pablo Molina, como Pericos y Salón Victoria dijeron sentirse comprometidos con los valores del festival, ya que a través de la música podrán poner su granito de arena para crear conciencia ambiental.

Sobre todo porque durante el festival habrá diversas actividades en las que varios de los músicos participarán, como conferencias sobre temas ambientales, taller de compostaje y juegos ambientales.

El hecho de que los artistas participen es un incentivo para que los asistentes se interesen en las actividades alternas que habrá a los conciertos.

Además de ello se está buscando que el festival sea congruente con el mensaje que quieran dar, por tal razón buscarán la manera de generar la menor basura que se pueda usando materiales que se puedan reciclar y también utilizando los desechos para la composta.

Para el evento se espera una asistencia de entre 15 y 20 mil personas por día, aunque los organizadores aseguraron que si ingresan más personas de lo previsto cuentan con las medidas de seguridad necesarias para mantener el orden.

También dijeron que esperan poder organizar una segunda edición de este festival para el próximo año en el que se incluirían más temas ambientales que en esta ocasión no pudieron ser abarcados, además de que se agregaría un género musical más.

Pra quem acha que xadrez só é usável no outono/inverno, ta enganado. O xadrez ta aparecendo direto em várias formas além do tradicional blusão grunge (que aliás, é um coringa no armário). Vestidos, shorts, saias, blusões, camisetes. Xadrez além de dar um toque underground, é básico e serve para todas as idades.

Los próximos 14 y 15 de noviembre se realizará este festival de ska y reggae en Parque Alameda Poniente, en Santa Fe.

Esta es la primera vez que se lleva a cabo el Jah Fest que tiene como propósito principal llevar un mensaje de paz y armonía con el medio ambiente.

De hecho su slogan es ‘Música por la renovación del planeta’, ya que además de ofrecer a los asistenetes una buena dosis de música, también aprovecharán el evento para organizar actividades ecológicas.

El lugar contará con área de compostaje, área de juegos ambientales, taller de huerto urbano, casa ecológica, reforestación, módulos informativos de separación de residuos sólidos y algunas otras actividades más a las que se les une la participación de varias ONG’s con fines ambientales, tales como Sembradores Urbanos y Cultura Ecológica A.C., entre otras más.

Alguna de las bandas que participarán son: Skatalites, Street Pulse, El Gran Silencio, Los Pericos, Inspector, Los Rastrillos, Antidoping, Salón Victoria, y más.

En cuanto al transporte, se contará con el apoyo de autobuses que saldrán de Ciudad Universitaria, Lindavista, Coapa, Auditorio Nacional y Mundo E.

El costo del boleto es de $300 pesos por un día, y de $500 pesos por los dos días. Aunque si los compras en preventa obtendrás descuento.

Las entradas están a la venta a través de Ticketmaster, ahí mismo podrás obtener el Ticket2ride para transportarte al evento.

Just in case y’all didn’t know, ska can kill you.  Serious.  And this isn’t even comparable to some half-baked urban myth lionising a Gabba raver who was so ‘into it’ that he simply dropped dead when the sunlight came up and the incessant pounding stopped.  That was too many drugs.  Ska can kill anyone, regardless of what may or may not be pervading their bloodstream.  Like a musical Dirty Harry, it has no mercy.  Forget swine flu, this is the real pandemic.  And if you don’t believe me, here is the testimony of a man so eager to reveal Jamaica’s deadliest weapon that he risks a manslaughter charge at best;  Skatalites double-bass player Lloyd Brevett ……

Not scared yet?  You should be.  But for those foolhardy types who like to stare danger in the face and insult her mother, here is the newly-reformed Skatalites playing Live at Reggae Sunsplash in 1983.  If I don’t hear anything, I’ll assume Brevett’s hypothesis was right and his double-bass ‘heartbeat’ has ‘taken you out’ too………

The Ska Originals

The Jam-Tex selector presents a new chapter in the “Wolrd of Reggae Music Collection“ called The Ska Originals.

The Jam-Tex selector has been working on a study and organization of the essential tracks of reggae music called “The World of Reggae Music Collection.” The selector invites others to comment on the selected tracks and to join in on the conversation about the history of reggae music.  This collection of singles began with the greatest roots reggae hits in categories entitled “Reggae’s Superstars: The Lions of Jah” and “Reggae’s Superstars: The Lion Youth.”

Now the selector moves back in time to the roots of reggae, exploring the greatest singles from the early ska era. Please feel free to suggest your favorite singles. The primary examination of the “Ska Originals” genre focuses on the founders of ska music from the late 1950s to the 1960s. Later posts will explore “Two-Tone Ska” and “Third Wave Ska” forms of ska music of the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s.

Some of the same Jamaican singers, musicians, and producers of the original ska music movement later became the fathers and mothers of rocksteady and reggae.  A young Robert Nesta Marley recorded some ska tunes and so did Bob Marley’s vocal group the Wailin’ Wailers, which later became the Wailers. Alton Ellis, Jimmy Cliff, Toots & The Maytals, Desmond Dekker, John Holt, Ken Boothe, Derrick Morgan, Clancy Eccles, and Lee “Scratch” Perry all played ska as young lads. These Jamaican superstars all make this collection of ska singles. So do the classic ska bands and vocal groups like The Skatalites, the Ethiopians, The Pioneers, the Soulettes, The Paragons, The Heptones, and the Versatiles. Many of the great ska musicians have singles that made this chart, like Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, and Tommy McCook.

Ska music is fun and fast, yet a very easy-going music that sends you skanking around the room. I love this music. There are some wonderful characters that came out of this musical genre, performers like Prince Buster, Sir Lord Comic, Lord Kitchener, Stranger Cole, Lord Creator, and the Folkes Brothers. Plus the dynamite sounds of Byron Lee and the Dragonaires make for some of the most classic ska tracks. The Jam-Tex selector invites you to comment on the list and make suggestions.

I went to school for media and communication arts. It was there that I learned about media analysis. I also become aware of a lack of black images across the media. By this I mean a truthful representation of what it means to be a black person, or someone of the African Diaspora, in these modern times. This special iMix was inspired by this problem, this obstacle that we must overcome! Why? because some little boy or little girl is sitting in front of the tv, or computer, or MobDev(mobile device) trying to make sense of the world and their place in it! Da wir bei unserer neuen Party (endlich) auch unsere Ska-Sammlung dabei haben, wird es höchste Zeit, mal wieder eine entsprechende Platte vorzustellen.

Roland Alphonso ist einer der Gründerväter des Ska und war auch ein Mitglied der legendären Skatalites. Sowohl über Roland Alphonso als auch die Skatalites etwas zu schreiben, würde meinen kompletten Nachmittag ausfüllen, wozu ich A: keine Lust habe und was B: völlig überflüssig wäre, weil es reichlich Einträge im Internet gibt. Erwähnen möchte ich aber, dass Alphonso und die meisten anderen Mitglieder der Skatalites auf die Alpha Boys Catholic School in Kingston gingen, wo schwer erziehbare Kinder auch mit klassischer europäischer Musik gedrillt wurden. Speziell “genossen” die Schüler eine Ausbildung an Blechblasinstrumenten. Einige Absolventen dieser Schule wurden trotz der wohl auch prügelnden Lehrer exzellente Musiker und gründeten in den 50ern Jazzbands. Das erklärt unter anderem, warum die Sax-Solis von Roland Alphonso so gigantisch gut sind.

“Lee Harvey Oswald/Leave Me Alone” zeigt Alphonso auf der einen Seite als Solisten und auf der anderen als Mitglied der Skatalites. Warum die Band auf der Platte so eigenartig geschrieben wird, kann ich nur raten. Möglicherweise hängt es damit zusammen, dass sich die Skatalites gerade trennten oder getrennt hatten als die Scheibe aufgenommen wurde.

Die 45er ist ziemlich rar und beide Seiten der Platte sind selten zu hören. Ich hoffe, ich mache dem einen oder anderen (neuen) Ska-Fan damit eine Freude.

Ska has repeatedly risen to near-mass appeal and then fallen back into obscurity. About a year ago, Dave Wakeling of the 2-Tone era band The English Beat told me to watch out for a fourth wave of ska in America and Britain. He described the music’s potential to be uplifting in times of crisis, explaining it “comes in a post-punk period, or a post-angst period, where people still might feel a sense of protest, but they’re sick of feeling miserable about it. Like, we’re still mad, but we want to party.”

It’s a nice idea, but I don’t see it happening. Despite big pockets of ska fans around the world, mass audiences don’t seem to want it. It’s always been a niche music. Even a vast economic downturn won’t change that.
