THE OFFSPRING – STUFF IS MESSED UP

Vi har skärskådat begreppet upplevelser och pratat om hur man ur ett designperspektiv ska tänka när man genom pedagogiska upplevelser försöker förmedla lärande. Att leva i en stad innebär att på daglig basis ta del av allmänna utrymmen som är designade för ett specifikt ändamål. Det kan handla om att förmedla en känsla, en historia, information eller kunskaper.

Museer är enligt ICOM (International Council of Museums) “En allmännyttig, permanent, offentligt tillgänglig institution i samhällets och dess utvecklings tjänst, som förvärvar, bevarar, utforskar, kommunicerar och ställer ut materiella föremål från människor och deras omvärld med syftet för studier, utbildning och underhållning.”

En designad upplevelse för lärande alltså. Systematiskt uppradade föremål som enskilt eller i en kontext ska berätta för mig om min samtid och omvärldshistoria. Som liten var jag inte vidare förtjust i museer, det luktar lite konstigt och luften är sådär torr och läderaktig. Lite som att andas in en riktigt gammal bok. Det enda jag gillade var att titta på dinosaurieskelett eller gamla svärd och andra vapen, men krukor, textilier, skor och verktyg från svunna tider rörde inte mig i ryggen. Höjdpunkten handlade såklart om att förhoppningsvis få handla något i museets souvenirshop. Kanske en dinosaurie i plast eller en gummihaj.

Som vuxen har jag lärt mig att uppskatta museer, inte bara för att det är praktiska ställen att gå till för att värma barnmat och byta blöjor, utan för att det är byggnader fulla av berättelser och levnadsöden. Dagens uppgift består i att anordna en pedagogisk exkursion i egen regi och reflektera över dess pedagogiska design.

Min resa gick till Röhsska museet på Vasagatan, mest för att det är ett av de museer som jag helst återvänder till. På Röhsska har man tagit steget att rikta sig till en yngre målgrupp jämfört med många andra museer och vågat se på populärkulturella fenomen ur ett designperspektiv. Ett exempel på det är utställningen Skateboard som pågick under fem månader 2008.

Målgruppen som Röhsska har inriktat sig på varierar. Museets permanenta utställningar riktar sig till de traditionella museibesökarna som just idag bestod av pensionärer och en skolklass någonstans i åldern femton till sjutton år. Röhsska riktar sig även till vissa intressegrupper med temporära utställningar för museibesökare med specialintressen. För tillfället visas bland annat en utställning om Coco Chanel och en om Kjell Ringi.

Designen och upplevelsebegreppet på Röhsska sker på klassiskt museimanér. Montrarna är designade för att framhäva objekten på ett sätt som väcker förundran och intresse hos besökarna. Den starkaste belysningen i rummen är den i montrarna, vilket bidrar till att framhäva objekten som extraordinära dyrgripar. När man som besökare fastnat för en monter kan man på en liten skylt läsa en kort text om objektets ursprung. De mörka rummen med upplysta montrar ger besökarna chansen att själva välja vilka objekt de ska ge sin uppmärksamhet och sitt intresse.

Röhsska anordnar ett par gånger i veckan guidade rundturer som ingår i biljettpriset. Rundturerna riktar in sig till vissa målgrupper, ibland är det för pensionärer och varje torsdag anordnas det barnvagnsrundturer för föräldrar som kör barnvagn.

Den pedagogiska tradition som finns på museet utgår från att besökaren känner en viss vördnad för historiska objekt. Besökaren tar själv in intryck och lärdom från de föremål han eller hon väljer att ge uppmärksamhet. Det finns ingen lärare som förmedlar lärdom utan det är upp till besökaren själv, källan till lärande är objekten själva. Miljön i sig ska bidra till intresse och lärdom.

Några tydliga designmissar som jag uppmärksammade gällde utställningen om Coco Chanel, där det i ett rum stod ett par provdockor iklädda Chanelklänningar. Problemet var bara att dockorna stod mitt i rokokorummet utan någon som helst hänvisning till Chanel. På ett litet bord fanns det en lapp där det stod ”Texthäften om Coco Chanel finns att köpa i receptionen för tjugo kronor”. Problemet var att jag då befann mig på tredje våningen, så motivationen att gå ner, betala tjugo spänn och sen gå upp igen uteblev. I rummet bredvid fanns det två skyltar som berättade om Cocos liv och yrkeskarriär. Synd på en utställning som skulle kunna vara så mycket mer.

Under mitt besök iakttog jag skolklassen som var där samtidigt som mig för att se om Röhsska lyckats med sin pedagogiska design eller inte. Skolungdomarna strövade planlöst runt i grupper om tre till fem individer och var märkbart förbryllade över nyklassicism, jugend och nationalromantik. Inget tycktes beröra dem. Ett gäng killar stod vid en enorm Buddhastaty och letade efter Buddhas könsorgan.

Museer misslyckas ofta med att skapa en relation mellan besökare och föremålen. Det finns ingen möjlighet till interaktion och interaktiva guidesystem med bluetooth-teknik är sällsynta. Mängden föremål blir tillslut överväldigande och efter ett tag minskas sinnesintrycken drastiskt.

Mitt intryck då? Jag har varit på Röhsska museet ett par gånger och jag tycker att deras asiatiska samlingar är magnifika. Jag upplever inget flow när jag är där, utan ett stillsamt lugn som ju mer tiden går sakteligen övergår i rastlöshet och ointresse för de tusentals vackra konstverken.

Respektlöst kanske, men museer behöver verkligen fundera över hur de ska utveckla besöken till att bli mer lärorika och mer intrycksfulla upplevelser. Tillslut var jag övertygad om att Marilyn Monroe luktade apa när hon låg och sov endast iförd Chanel No5 bara för att Chanelutställningen var kasst designad. Kjell Ringi fattade jag inte alls, handlade det om sjutusen piprensare eller figurer gjorda i kakel? Jag var dessutom tvungen att vräka på Raised Fists nya skiva Veil of ignorance på hög volym i lurarna för att över huvud taget kunna göra en ofantlig samling med kinesiska snusdosor till en del av min verklighet.

The last console exergame “harvest” of the year came out in the past couple of weeks, with EA Sports Active: More Workouts, Tony Hawk Ride, Just Dance, and Your Shape. Out of those, More Workouts is getting the most praise, with eight 5-star reviews at Amazon and even several glowing reviews from the tough crowd in the gaming press.  Just Dance, a shake-your-Wiimotes dance game, got a couple of favorable reviews on Amazon as well, although the professional gamers have yet to notice it.

Tony Hawk Ride, with its skateboard controller, was the only game to have Xbox 360 and PS3 versions in addition to Wii.  The Wii and PS3 versions got some poor reviews, but interestingly enough, several Amazon reviewers liked the 360 game very much.  Maybe some Xbox owners are starting to have an appetite for casual and fitness games.

Your Shape, the Wii fitness game featuring a camera peripheral, is not faring so well at Amazon.  A couple of buyers say it is just like My Fitness Coach, also made by Ubisoft, but with a camera tacked on.  They’re saying that if you already have My Fitness Coach (which got very good reviews) don’t bother with Your Shape.

Lastly, the ultimate challenge is finding a review of Ultimate Party Challenge, the DDR-mat Wii game that’s been out for nearly a month now.  Does it actually exist?  What if they gave a party and no one came?  Doesn’t anyone want to risk $30, or is everyone really waiting on reviews now?

Okay; maybe you weren’t around when skateboarding was at it’s zenith, in the 1960’s to the 1980’s. But you probably have at least a nodding acquaintance with the skateboard, enough to know what it is even if you’ve never been a skateboarder yourself.

If you’re a real enthusiast, though, vintage skateboard videos can tell you what it was like in the “good old days” — back in the days when skateboarding was a rebellious thing to do, and when it was as likely as anything to have skateboarders simply practicing their jumps and other moves on plywood ramps in their backyards, without the use of today’s formal skateboarding parks.

Don’t get me wrong; the fact that skateboarding has gone mainstream to the point where you DO have skateboarding parks to use if you want to practice your latest moves is a great thing. But there’s something that’s … not missing, exactly, from this more established form of skateboarding. I guess there was just a rebelliousness of that came from having skateboarding be on the fringe.

Not about safety, but about the fun

Now, no one is telling you that you shouldn’t suit up in full gear, from knee and elbow pads to helmets if you ride your skateboard. After all, you don’t want to end up in the hospital with a concussion or something much worse. But back in the day, skateboarding was the rebel’s sport, and like so many things back then, there were no “safety” established regulations.

Just like in the 60s, when seatbelts were not mandatory in cars, so, too, was it that helmets, and elbows and kneepads, were safety devices of the future. (Now doubtless, they got invented and became par for the course because so many people probably got injured while skateboarding, but ah, the freedom…. But I digress.) Long, feathered hair (remember feathered hair?) flying in the wind, practicing for hours in the zone just for the fun of flying and trying something new.

If you watch vintage skateboard videos, you might detect a certain edge to skaters’ performances that certainly hasn’t gone away with today’s more established sport. But again, because it wasn’t established, there was a bit of an “up yours” attitude to that type of skating that doesn’t have to be there anymore with today’s skating.

Nonetheless, it shouldn’t be surprising that many of the masters from the ’80s are still skating today. Still a sport to be pursued, still a challenge to be conquered. A lot of these folks have kept in top form and continue to challenge younger rivals, although not necessarily in competition. They simply do it for the joy of the ride.

Think women can’t? Think again

And finally, one truly great development in today’s skateboarding is that women compete in events almost as often as men do. It should be noted that even with vintage skateboard videos, women, too, were as likely to be skaters as men were back in the 70s, but kind of faded into the woodwork when skateboarding went hard-core in the 80s. Thankfully, they’ve got their own very strong branch of the sport these days, with women like Elissa Steamer killing in competition and able, truly, to keep up with the guys.

So although the “good old days” can certainly be shown with vintage skateboard videos, I guess there’s also something to be said about THESE good old days, too.
