“The Create Originals co-owners took the 8 hour drive trip out to the “Rolling Rumble” contest that went down at Xtreme Wheels skate park in Buffalo, New York last Sunday. We arrived at Buffalo late Saturday night and decided since Niagara Falls was only 10 minutes away that it was to close not to visit the next day. Our trip to one of the worlds natural wonders was on a misty day so visibility wasn’t as great as it could have been but it was still an amazing site. We then headed to the skate park where we were welcomed by one of the owners Virginia who could not have been more hospitable and she’s is also extremely down for skating. Her family runs the only park in town which basically keeps the Buffalo skate scene alive during the cold winter months. After greetings from the staff and locals and a tour of the immense facility, we set up the goods and spent the day watching the comp go down and explaining the product to the eager and curious locals. After the contest wrapped up and we gave away some frames to the winners, we decided to get some quick clips before immediately heading on our way back to Boston. This weekend Phil Willis MP and I went down to Bradford to meet with the Council’s Parks Manager, Ian Day, and visit two of their skate parks.
Both the skateparks were designed by local skaters working with a specialist company and look very different.

The first, in Bingley, is in Myrtle Park, in the centre of the town.   It is on a flat part of the park, next to a children’s play area and covers a space a bit bigger than a tennis court.    I was surprised that most of the surfaces are very angular and designed for grinding rather than the half pipes I had expected.

The park has been in place now for some time and has proved to be extremely popular although early morning on a wet Saturday at the end of November was of course quiet.

Bingley

The second park we visited was in Keighley and is Bradford’s most recent skate park.   Again designed by local skaters, it looks very different from the Myrtle Park one.

It is at the end of a school field, on quite steeply sloping ground and is predominently comprised of slopes and curves.

The park is quite close to some housing and although the residents were anxious about disturbance from the park, there have been few complaints and some have commented that they enjoy the entertainment from the skill of the skaters.

Tri-State Skate will be hosting a premiere for one of the best videos of this year “Too Much Love 2: The Breakdown” which features skating from John Bolino, Brett Dasovic, Chris Farmer, Michael Garlinghouse and Jeph Howard. Just based on the line up the video sound sicks and the trailer looks amazing. Besides the premiere tomorrow, there will also be a $10 session at Drop-In skatepark along with a bunch of great sales at Tri-State. “We will be having a premiere at the shop this upcoming Monday, November 30th at 7pm. Copies of the video will be for sale for $20. Following the premiere will be a session downstairs at the skate park($10 Monday Nite Skate). Will also be having a lot of sales going on starting Black Friday(11/27), and ending the night of the premiere(11/30).” – Tri-State Skate.

Rober Monegro has been in the game for 13 years on and off and at 28 years-old is still rolling while most others his age would’ve quit and died out. At an older age than most, Robert isn’t playing it safe either. He pulls off switch ups, misty flips and back flips like any new comer and has a classic NYC style when skating. Skate parks include Hackenstown, Hoboken and Mullaly skate park in the Bronx NY.

Make sure you attend the contest as it’s sure to be a great one and changes/updates are being done to the park just in time for the competition. I hope to see some NYC kids there because there will be cash prizes, trophies, and merch to winners in each division along with a best trick prize. Skatepark Design Workshop Held to Unveil Final Two Concept Designs

            Representatives from Dreamland Skateparks presented the final two design propositions for the city’s planned downtown skateboard park to eager Eugene area skaters and bikers Tuesday night. It was part of the third City Center Skatepark Design Workshop held in the conference room of the downtown library and organized by the Eugene Parks and Open Space department. The workshop was intended to get feedback from the community on the proposed designs for the skateboarding park to be built under the Washington Jefferson St Bridge. The skatepark is to replace a rundown playground located at the site and will hopefully revitalize the neglected area.

            Dreamland Skatepark designers Mark Scott and Burke Morris presented their respective designs as 3D computer images. There was a palpable excitement for the park in the room.  Many skaters believe it is a long time in coming. “This design is Ill,” voiced one skater during the presentation.  Hopes are high that this park will be one of the premier skateparks in the northwest and that the park may lure pro competitions in the future. 

            After Dreamland’s design presentations, a question and answer session and small focus group meetings were held in order for those in attendance to voice their opinions on the designs and suggest modifications. Dreamland designers had modified earlier design concepts to create the final two proposals based on community input from the earlier workshops.  They plan to create a final design proposition based on feedback from Tuesday’s meeting.

            Both designs feature a combination of “street” features like sidewalk curbs, hand rails and stairs, as well as transitional features like ramps and empty swimming pools. All of the features are designed for skateboarders to do tricks on. Two of the key features of Mark Scott’s “Concept D” are a large pool that is shaped like a flower with a smaller pool in the middle. The other feature, called the snake run, could best described as a curving concrete path with raised sides for tricks. The most noteworthy aspect of Burke Morris’s “Concept E” was the interconnected nature of the features in the design. Skaters feel they could skate more readily between features in the Morris’s design than the Scott’s which has features that are more independent and not necessarily as well connected.  Skaters in attendance seemed to universally favor Morris’s design, but many also expressed hopes during the focus groups that some popular features from Scott’s design could be added to Morris’s plan. The flower shaped pool in Scott’s design did not meet with any of the focus group’s approval.  “It sounds cool but it could easily fail, and then your screwed,” expressed one observer. Dreamland designers spent a great deal of time hearing design feedback and taking notes on comments from those in attendance.  They plan to incorporate suggestions into their final proposal.

             The skatepark project slated to be built under the Washington-Jefferson St. Bridge, has been the goal of a grass roots campaign started in 2004 by a group called the Skaters for Eugene Skateparks (SES).  The group petitioned the Eugene Parks Department asking for a premiere skate park to be built.   The group received a great deal of support from the community, including the endorsement of Mayor Kitty Pearcy.  The Parks Department agreed to make the skatepark a top priority in 2006.  Funding for the park is to come in part from an 2007 allotment of $292,000 in public money from the Capitol Improvement Program (CIP).  Another $250,000 for the park is expected to come through private donations raised by the Skaters for Eugene Skateparks.  The downtown chapter of the Rotary has pledged to raise $100,000 of the $250,000.  Currently SkateEugene.org(the SES site)  lists private funds raised at $32,000.  Organizers expect construction of the park to begin in mid 2010.

             Dreamland plans to incorporate suggestions from Tuesday’s workshop and decide on a final design proposal to be presented at a December 15^th public meeting.  That meeting will take input from community members as to final modification suggestions.   The completed design will be unveiled at a January 19^th design celebration.  The two final designs presented Tuesday are expected to be released to the web through skateeugene.org in the next few days.

Most of the footage is of Evotek Media’s Why So Serious Competition with a bunch of great angles and coverage of tricks done during the comp. I reported earlier last month, that the Brooklyn Banks was said to be shut down until 2014 and it seems as if the Gothamist online newspaper has confirmed the closing. Said to take place in December and now it seems as if the reopening of the Brooklyn Banks is not definite. “The city has made up its mind. Come December, the Brooklyn Banks will be boarded up and transformed into a construction area for the Brooklyn Bridge rehabilitation project, Scott Gastel, spokesperson for the city Dept. of Transportation told Downtown Express. While there is a chance the gritty street-style park may reopen in 2014 with a few new shiny touches, old school…are not psyched on the idea” – Gothamist. The banks is rich with history from every alternative/action/street sport and it seems lame, for a lack of a better term, that it’s getting shut down to make room for construction equipment.
