It’s happened again . . . I’m bored with my room. Since the big redesign, cleaning and purging of June ‘09, I’ve been reasonably happy with the set-up of my books and furniture, but something new is irking me: I need new art. Like, yesterday. Because all the posters from the plays in which I performed in high school, oh, ten years ago? It’s time to move beyond. I’m ready.

So I’ve spent the better part of my Black Friday looking at art on Etsy, my most favorite of all online retailers. Doing a search for “print” will give you about seven million trillion results, so don’t put yourself through that. I’ve been looking for something that screams “MEG!” (or, you know, gently shouts it?) to hang in place of all the random memorabilia currently scattered on my walls.

Being the consummate book lover you all know and love, this inevitably led me to search for book-related prints — and I certainly have my options! Join in the fun and help me decide. Or just order these right out from under me, basically stealing my art- and book-related joy. You know, whichever.

※

Yeah, about finding time to draw and paint during my first term in graduate school? Considering how little I have been able until now with two weeks remaining in the term, that was clearly an overly optimistic goal. The best I have is a pile of doodles sketched during lectures or while listening to radio news.

Sometimes I can actually concentrate on what I am listening to more effectively if I get in to a meditative state. Incidentally, this is most effectively accomplished with repetitive drawing. Yes, my years as an undergraduate art student drawing the human body over and over again has prepared me (to some degree) for what I’m facing in my graduate level studies!

Hopefully next term I will be a bit more able to find free time for art. I like to think that this term was just allowing me to bet my adult, graduate student feet. It has taken me the better part of this time to adjust to the scheduling style. My courses demand a different brand of time management than I have been accustomed to until now.

For now, please enjoy these sketches scribbles.

KaDeWe, a huge trade center on Wittenberg platz. Feels like we were in another city surrounded by urban flowers – street lamps. We’ve met Catalina and walked to Tiergarten, a park in the center of Berlin.

We have been filmed while SketchCrawling by Fabrice, a journalist from worbz. Here is our Big Brother:

I tried to clutch Catarina while she was waiting for the watercolors to dry.

We discovered a big advantage of being filmed. Fabrice and his camera got all the attention and we could easily sketch people sitting right in front of us.
Jen joined us at Wittenberg platz and we sketched at a Christmas market
It has been a long day for me. I was happy to see other sketchcrawlers.
Congratulations for five years of sketchcrawling to every one who’s in!

Alright, so I’ve been meaning to write this one for a while. I’m to tired to put the drawings in order, sorry. It has been a very good Thanksgiving and I am tired.

I really like this first fish drawing. It’s got a light green background that didn’t scan in, but I just picture him saying ‘hi there!’

This second one is an ATC for a surreal swap. I’m in a fish mood I guess. I read something about flying fish and this is what came to mind.

I went to a sketch crawl this past weekend. It was pretty cool. I found a very neat little tea house and met lots of other artists. Plus I got to draw for two hours which was very nice. This is the website to the idea of sketchcrawl: http://www.sketchcrawl.com/index.html

It was hosted by Utrecth so I got some cute erasers and a pencil for going. I hope they host more of those because I really did have fun.

This is the second page I did on my sketch crawl. I was trying this idea out for my surreal swap, but I haven’t refined it yet. I still really like the idea of fish swimming in a window with a sky for a background. I think I will play with this idea for a little bit longer.

One of my other challenges was a cute robot swap. It was harder to draw a ‘cute robot’ then I thought it was going to be. I like how they came out though. I got the dino robot idea from my friend.

I started drawing this ATC but I fell in love with the simplicity of it. So I haven’t finished it, but it is sitting on my desk. It just makes me smile.

Since I am making most of my Christmas gifts I will not be updating my blog unless the recipient have received them…..or I get the time to work on other things besides gifts.

I’ve been imagining what I want people to see when they come into Pocktorian Textiles, now that I can include some furnishings in that imagining. Before I could include furnishings in my imaginings, I was imagining a single dress rack, a hat rack for the wall, a mirror, and a tiny picnic table with clotheslines strung all about otherwise.

I already know that we’ll have an A-frame chalkboard announcing our existence and whatever events are going on outside the Looses entrance. That will direct them to the stairs in the back, where there will be a poster urging people onward. And then we have to get them inside the first of the two rooms, the sales room, probably with another A-frame.

Inside, on the wall, will be posted what we’re looking for. That will be resident designer / makers if we still have room for some, and if we don’t there will be a waiting list designer / makers can get onto. Also we’ll be posting items that we want to offer: hats, if we don’t have any hats; bags, if we don’t have any bags; pillows, if we don’t have any pillows, as well as things like handspun yarn, if we don’t have any of that, or hand-dyed yarn, if we don’t have any. And also what we want to have but don’t have for the studio, whether we can afford it yet or not, like a spinning wheel, for example. Maybe someone will loan it to us. Or, dare we hope, donate it?

Also on the walls will be the latest sketches from our designers, what they expect to be making in the next week. That will be next to a special area containing all the new stuff made in the incubator or received from designer /makers outside the incubator in the last week.

I got a camera for Christmas already, and I know just what I will use it for. Look out, Norwich, there’s going to be a part of the wall where we’ll be posting pictures I’ve taken of Norwich street style, and you can bet that anyone who buys something in the shop and puts it on will get the chance to have their picture added to the wall.

I got a great phone call today from an excellent Norwich designer who will be having some of her work in the sales room. I think I want to wait to tell people who it is, though, because I want to get some picture files from her and do a whole post about her. There, you have a hint. It’s a she. (Big fat hint, huh?)

More and more and more later.

There’s a great moment, in an old Will Smith film called Six Degrees of Separation, where an art teacher is showing off the water colour paintings of a classroom full of eight year olds. Somehow, these paintings are magnificent. Every one of them a bold and wonderful landscape, or haunting portrait or daring abstract, each with brilliant composition and personality.

All of them.

These are the canvases that generations of expressionists have longed to be able to create, all dashed off by eight year olds with casual ease.

“How on earth did you teach your students to paint so beautifully?” the art instructor is asked.

“I taught them nothing,” she answers, “I just hand them the brushes and watch them paint. My trick is knowing when to take the paintings away and knowing how to crop ‘em.”

The untrained mind creates some of the most interesting art. The example above is by my untrained ten year old Sean. It’s a portrait of his eight year old sister. And here’s what I like about it beyond the proud papa, lookie at what muh BOY did aspects…! I like that he liberally mixes pencil crayon colours in the hair and face, including some BLUE(!) in the facial features. I never put blue in a flesh tone until college, and even then against my will. But there it is. And the blacks in the blonde hair to tone down the way-too-yellow pencil crayon that was supposed to be blonde. Lovely.

I like the eyes being white, with blue pupils, around gray dots. That’s my favorite part of the portrait, simply because my mind would never go to that interpretation of reality. There’s a bit of Modigliani in there, perhaps. The family has large, framed reproductions of his work up in our house, and he’s one of my favorite painters. To the left is one of the two that hang in his parent’s bedroom, and the elongated face so common to Modigliani’s work is visible in it.

Another painter we have numerous examples of, up around the house, is the deco master (or mistress) Tamara de Lempicka. Her work also features a glassy eye and an elongated face. Since I ain’t a zillionaire, we have framed copies of her work darting about our walls, another influence into the ten year old brain, mayhap…?

And finally, I like that Sean has a habit of cutting his artwork out of the paper it’s drawn on after he’s done. There’s always an element of treating the drawing itself as an object with him…once the art is cut out, it’s then glued to something else, or folded into something, or often just given away in its cut out form.

The trick is knowing when to take it away.

So…take it away Sean Templeton-Smith, this was your first gallery show, and in the company of two modern masters, to boot!

I have four kids in total, each with their own stunning set of talents, so be forewarned, this feature will likely show up again.

Ty the Guy. Once again, tricking the family into doing his job for him.

A work-in-progress of Phèdre nó Delaunay of the Kushiel Legacy Trilogy by writer Jacqueline Carey. While this has been a few months in the works, now, this was my first experiment in painting more realistic skin tones. There are a lot of great tutorials out there on how to do this, but I highly recommend the tutorials provided by the magazine ImagineFX. ImagineFX is a huge asset to beginning digital painters, fantasy or otherwise.

A few weeks ago I was asked to make a trend forecast on sneakers at commercial fashion market. I had to put together basic styles and colors for next year for a brand that does not intend to be leader on the market rather serve the mass with trustable and fashionable shoes. So I sketched the basic shoe styles, the most interesting colors and decorations with understanding the needs of the target costumers. It was important to see that I needed to make a fashionable selection for costumers who are rather followers on the market than inventors. Therefore I’ve chosen colors and styles that have already been fashion buzz but not yet out of the trends. Things that fashion inventors are already wearing. The top five infos were:

1. basketball style/ankle shoes

2. neon colors

3. lower top line for girls sneakers

4. patterns patterns patterns

5. retro styles&colors

I did these over a year ago, but I figured since most of my search terms involve Layton every single day, I figured that I’d post these sketches!

UGH the sketchyness is killing me ;-; These are so old!

Truth be told, I was practicing a new coloring style when I did most of these… back in January. I kept using it throughout, except in better pics.

When I worked in the bookstore (the cafe portion) I would try to imagine what Luke and the Professor would order if they came in for some tea. The Professor would probably have Earl Grey while Luke had a frap. DOUBLE CHOCOLATE CHIP.

I still call older Luke, Legal. I will forever call him Legal.

Hehe, it’s Kiku and Mitoko down at the bottom fooling around! Still no colored pic of them for you ((see, I had them long before I opened this blog!)

Younger Laytonz~

And in color! I was pretty proud of his design… guess I still kinda am. I wonder if they’ll ever incorporate a younger Layton, seeing as how they incorporated an older Luke.

Yum yum those buns.

I don’t even know. I tried making the Professor have ~bedroom eyes~ and it was pretty… sad XD

Happy family

Seeing as how they’re the same person, I don’t think they’d get along very well X3

Luke watches you while you undress.

Probably my fav out of all the pics I did in this bunch. I love this fictional man with dots for eyes.

I still remember waiting by a train station and doodling him! I was listening to thins jump/dance styled song~

More Luke colorings~

Colored Legal, which I didn’t like very much.

Wonder what he’s thinking about.

And complaining about our younger selves never gets old.

Doodled this in math class.

Black acrylic on hot press (smooth finish) watercolor paper or bristol pad makes an excellent drawing medium. I like to add a bit of white charcoal at the end to draw out highlights and to create reflective effects. Drawing with a brush (I used a 1/4″ angle brush on these) enables you to stay loose and capture a lot of gesture. I work transparently blocking in large shapes and moving through the value range. Typically, I can acheive a range of 4 to 5 values including the white of the paper. I like doing these both as studies and as finished drawings in and of themselves. They are highly valuable when working on the images in color, and make a nice presentation when matted and framed.

After reading about Movember I noticed two fine examples among my fellow commuters and present them here for your enjoyment. Sorry about the lack of bearded women, I do try but I can only work with what I’m given:

I am in a sketching phase. And especially scenes, not things or objects. Scenes like buildings and architecture, streets, les places, small shops. I don’t think I’m particularly good at these type of “scenes”, but I’m having fun! I sometimes feel I will never be a proper artist. I feel too much like a changeling for I have too many phases. Maybe it is the winter. Or the atmosphere in the streets, the lights coming from buildings, the reflection of streetlamps…how can I work alone in my atelier when there is the smell of coffee and hot chocolate in the bars, the intimate talks around candles, the festivity of people with shopping bags in the streets, the creeping deeper into your woolen hat and coat…

Some last sketches from Paris: The first from le jardin du luxembourg with its hordes of trees and chairs.
