Few names are as hallowed among skiers and snowboarders as Warren Miller, the godfather of extreme skiing cinematography. Bay Area fans can watch his latest movie, Dynasty, on the big screen in high definition as part of an 82-city tour when it comes to San Francisco and Palo Alto later this week. I saw it at a high school auditorium in San Mateo last Sunday.

At age 81, Miller has retired from his wild ice and snow capades. But the movie’s director, Max Bervy, has interspersed new footage with grainy video shot by Miller during the past 60 years. The old shots lend character to the movie, while the new footage is spectacular with all of its visual effects.

Narrated by Olympic skier Jonny Moseley, Dynasty starts at Lake Tahoe–where the skiing is “crazy, good or crazy-good” as Moseley says–and then heads to British Columbia, Washington, Colorado, Norway, Alaska, Michigan (yes, Michigan!), Idaho and China for shots of extreme skiing on rugged terrain.

The 98-minute film also features a 9-year-old snowboarding phenom named Snow White (after another famous snowboarder with the last name “White”), adaptive athletes recklessly racing down the mountain in sit skis in skiercross at the X Games and Chinese villagers plunging down a hill on long skis roughly hewn from trees.

Showings will be at the Castro Theatre, 429 Castro St., San Francisco on Thursday, Nov. 19 at 8 p.m. and the Spangenberg Theatre, 780 Arastradero Road, Palo Alto on Friday, Nov. 20 at 8 p.m. In addition to the movie, there will be prize giveaways. Call (800) 523-7117 or visit Any Mountain to purchase tickets ($18 each, which includes a free lift ticket to Heavenly and $25 off a purchase of $100 or more at Any Mountain).

The quote from Mt. Horeb Wisconsin’s Tyrol Basin Ski and Snowboard Area’s facebook status: “Tyrol Basin would like to answer the question ‘When are you going to make snow?’ As soon as possible when it won’t melt in a day. We’re counting the days too!” As temperatures continue to loom around the low fifties and high-forties in mid-November, one cannot help but curse the possible phenomenon of global warming. While some Midwest hills open a box and rail-filled run in late October and most hills fully open the weekend of Thanksgiving, virtually no hill has even begun the snowmaking process. If this is a sign of things to come, us Midwesterners can anticipate a mild and muddy winter. So, always looking to the positive… a lighter ‘fit will be necessary for at least the first couple weeks of the season, meaning SHOPPING TIME. CLOTHES! This gear is lightweight, and will hide the mud that’s more likely to fly than flurries.

Of course, nothing weather-wise is ever guaranteed in the Midwest (seeing as there was no summer and it snowed in early October). So keep all your winter gear at hand; cause though it’s eternally unpredictable, cold temperatures and snow will arrive at some point!

A Message from Arson Rider Ian Paone (Whistler BC)! So Swollen Members came to town on November 11th

A Message from Arson Rider Ian Paone (Whistler BC)!

So Swollen Members came to town on November 11th (lest we forget) Swollen Members rolled into town and played a show with Bliss n’ Esso, one of the biggest Aussie hip-hop duos. Oh man what a show it was. Here’s a picture of just the crowd in this tiny club

Since Whistler is full of Aussies, Bliss n’ Esso were a huge hit and they got the entire bar jumping. I’ve only heard 1 of their songs before but I was getting right into it as well. They also do a cover of a really good Citizen Cope song “A Bullet and a Target.

Then Swollen took the stage, I dragged my broke and tired ass out of bed after skiing to go see them(I drove up to Kadenwood in whis to sesh the mini jib park that was built up there, no photos though sorry!) and oh man they didn’t disappoint . My first ever concert was these guys back in 2001 in Victoria but this show was 100x better. I was 2nd row, center stage and had a prime view of the show. Here’s some photos

So yea that was my Wednesday night. I may be a reggae kid now but I will always listen to Swollen Members. They’re music has always been a huge part of my life and my skiing. I have so much respect for these guys. Madchild is going through so much shit right now and he’s still going strong

If you get the chance, go see a Swollen Members show. It will change your perspective on live shows forever. Keep shredding. Peace.

With Whistler opening this weekend and Lake Louise opening earlier this month, ski season is officially underway. Even our little local hill in Edmonton opened it’s doors , which surprised me considering there is no snow in sight.

I’ve been an avid skier since my early youth. After my second year of college my instructor and I went on a ski trip to Sunshine Village in Banff , Alberta. I instantly fell in love with the mountains and at the end of the week , i quit a great job up north and moved to Lake Louise where I worked , skied , climbed mountains and studied Photography. Quite a change from the oil patch and I sure surprised a lot of people, but I was young and looking for adventure. It was a truly amazing experience that lasted five years and left me with many fantastic stories to tell my son and maybe grandkids in the future

One thing to remember when playing in the mountains is SAFETY ! Every year the winter is littered with stories of people loosing their lives or disabling themselves in horrible accidents. Many of these are caused by people attempting things completely out of their skill level or without proper training. As an ex adrenaline junkie I know from experience how easy it is to make mistakes, but keep in mind that mother nature can be very unforgiving at times and downright deadly. Skiing within proper boundaries is a rule for a good reason as well as having trails marked with different skill levels. Don’t get me wrong , I am not trying to be preachy in any way , just a little advice from experience. I’ve done a fair bit of backcountry skiing and hiking and the rule of thumb is “be prepared” just like the old boy scout saying There are great courses available which will give you the knowledge to travel into the abyss, it’s a matter of minimizing the risks with proper training just like the pros. With time and patience as well as a bit of style and grace , who knows, maybe you can make it into a Warren Miller film !

I’ve skied quite a number of places throughout British Columbia and Alberta , Canada and my top 3 without a doubt are :

Whistler/Blackcomb

Lake Louise

Mike Wiegele Heli skiing

The premier event this year is the Winter Olympics in Vancouver this year. I was blessed to be around for the Calgary Olympics in 1988 and even had the pleasure of having a bit of ski time with the Swiss team while they were training in Lake Louise. If you haven’t had a chance to go see a world class sporting event such as the Olympics I urge you to go , there is nothing else like it !

Vancouver 2010

For information on the Canadian Alpine Ski team check out their site : Alpine Ski Team and don’t forget to cheer them on this February !

One of the best websites for Canadian skiers of all ages is Ski and Snowboard Canada. There is tons of info as well as some fantastic deals for the kids, be sure to take a look

That’s all for tonight, take care , be safe and have a blast this winter !

Namaste ~ william

“Just turn!” says boyfriend.

Tears well up in girlfriend’s eyes.

“Just turn … like this,” says boyfriend, who proceeds to demo the move.

Learn to conquer powder with hot lesson deals at Summit County's two Colorado Gems.

Anyone who skis or snowboards in Colorado has probably witnessed this scenario more than a few times. They’ve watched the scene explode into tears, yelling and possibly a call to ski patrol. Maybe they’ve even been part of it.

Whatever the case, ski and snowboard lessons are worth the investment. Several of the big boys offered unlimited lesson packages to early-bird buyers, but Summit County’s two Colorado Gems – Arapahoe Basin and Loveland Ski Area – have long cornered the market on unbeatable ski and snowboard lesson packages. The real reason it’s a deal? Prices include SEASON passes.

The Colorado Gems, a product/term created by Colorado Ski Country, U.S.A., refers to nine of the state’s smaller ski areas, which generally cater to families and lower budgets, thus creating the “Lift Line? What lift line?” mentality. This isn’t to say you can’t find big terrain at the Gems. Just ask the regulars at A-Basin.

Arapahoe Basin: Guaranteed to Succeed – For a mere $339 A-Basin offers a season pass, three half-day lessons and three full-day gear rentals. The kicker: anyone not skiing/riding blue terrain after the third session gets lessons until they tackle blues.

Loveland Ski Area: 3 Class Pass – When kids or beginner/intermediate adults complete three lesson packages (which includes rental equipment and a lift ticket) the bonus prize is a free or low-cost Loveland season pass. Totals average $255-$370 per person for the classes, rentals and season pass.

Shane, I’ll never forget the day in ‘97 when I first met you at the top of the park chair, and watched you throw switch back 3’s etc… the early dawn of today’s standard both on the hill and in the air. This is my first winter back on snow in 3 years, and I dedicate this season’s progression to Shane, an amazing bloke who left us way too soon.

Through figuring out all this twitter and blog shit, I’ve re-realized how many rad cats there are out there doing the raddest things with their lives. POSTMODUM is my record of who I’ve met, who I meet, and those that I admire. And a bunch of pointless crap I’m sure.

Always on the lookout for an intriguing pair of mens trousers, I came across these beauties from Swedish demi-denim-gods Acne. These stretchy trousers (13% elasthane) are based on vintage ski-pant design, and have adjustable under-foot elastic straps so you can create great balloon effects / carrot-cuts. The almost cuffed style makes them great tucked into boots and very practical for Scandinavian winters! I love them, and am definitely considering a pair for work..but please Acne, make me more colours!?

Red River Ski Vacations Red River, New Mexico is home to one of the most popular ski resorts in the

Red River Ski Vacations

Red River, New Mexico is home to one of the most
popular ski resorts in the United States, and has
been for many decades. The resort offers six chair
lifts and one surface lift, and the trails are equally
divided for beginners, intermediates, and experts.

Top elevation at Red River is 10354 feet, and the
vertical drop down the face of the mountain is 1601
feet. Unfortunately, it doesnt snow much, and about
85% of the powder is man made. There are 58 trails
scattered over 247 acres. Red River is called the ski
town of the Southwest.

The resort has three restaurants, all of which offer
fabulous fare. Lodging can be obtained in cabins,
chalets, inns, or private condominiums in the area,
and many lodging packages, as well as ski packages
are available through Red River Central Reservations.
Red River also offers snow pass rates which allow
children to ski for free, and teens to ski at reduced
rates. This is a great way to save money on your
family ski vacation.

Red River also has a ski school, and group lessons
and private lessons are available. Even if youve never
skied before, you will quickly be on the slopes after
your lessons. There are even lessons for
snowboarders, who are welcome on the Red River
slopes. You can also rent all of your ski and
snowboarding equipment for very reasonable rates.

The nightlife in Red River is also great. After a day
on the slopes, you can kick back and relax at the
lodge, or visit one of the taverns in the area. For the
younger crowd, there is a great game room located
right in the center of the town. One of the great things
about Red River is that everything is within walking
distance of the lodging areas, and shuttles are
provided for transportation to and from the slopes.

You can also enjoy taking scenic chairlift rides,
hiking, biking, horseback riding, camping,
snow-mobiling, and hunting. You can even take one
of the jeep tours to go see the abandoned gold mines
in the area. So, even if you dont ski, there is still
plenty of fun to be had at Red River Ski Resort.

Childcare is available while you spend your day on
the slopes. Your child will be well tended at the Lil
Buckaroos Child Care Facility, and the center
provides lunch for your child as well. At Red River,
everything has been thought of and taken care of to
ensure that your ski vacation is as enjoyable as
possible.

Ski Vacations Learning How To Ski

If your family wants to go skiing on your next
vacation, but you dont know how to ski, go ahead
and plan that ski vacation anyway! You can learn
how to ski, and you will have a great time doing it.
You dont even need to know the first thing about
skiing before you arrive at the resort all of the
knowledge you will need is there waiting for you,
and you can literally be skiing down a mountain
after an hour of instruction.

Learning to ski is really quite easy. Most resorts
have a ski school on the premises, and lessons are
reasonably priced. Group and private lessons are
usually available. It is a good idea, however, to
schedule an appointment before you arrive at the
resort. This will ensure that you can start learning
to ski the very first hour of your vacation.

Most ski instructors start by showing you how to
maneuver around with your equipment. When you
are wearing ski boots, you will be inclined slightly
forward there is a reason for thiswhen you are
skiing down a mountain, you will be inclined
forward! Walking in ski boots the first time is a bit
difficult but it works just fine if you learn to walk
with your knees slightly bent.

The first maneuver you will learn is called the plow,
or snow plow. This is a technique that is done by
literally using your skis as a snow plow. You make
the back of the skis slowing move outwards, away
from your body by applying pressure and this stops
you. You guide yourself on skies by bending your
knees and leaning in one direction or another,
depending on which way you want to go. All of these
techniques can be learned in one hour, even if you
have never been on a pair of skis in your life.

The beauty of skiing is that after you have learned
how to snow plow, and how to guide yourself on the
skis, you are ready to ski! Get on the lift, head up the
mountain, and give it a try. Control your speed by
snow plowing go slow at first. When you want to
pick up some speed, draw your skis back in to pick
up a little speed, then push them back out into the
plow position to control that speed.

As a beginner, you should stick to the trails that are
designed for beginners. At most resorts, these trails
are marked with a green emblem. Blue trails are for
intermediate skiers, and after one day of skiing the
beginner trails, you may be ready for those trails.
The black trails are for experts. These trails can be
dangerous for people who dont have the skill level
to handle them! Avoid black trails until you have
had a great deal of ski instruction and experience.
You will know when you are ready!
Ski Vacations What To Pack

If you will be traveling for a ski vacation, it is often
difficult to know what to pack. You may not even
have a problem knowing what to pack, but instead
have a problem figuring how to get everything that
you need from your home to your destination. Skis
do not easily fit into suitcases, and if you are flying,
this presents a huge problem.

Start by knowing what is available at your destination.
Is there a rental shop? How much are the rental fees
for skis, boots, and poles. If it is reasonable, and you
dont mind skiing with rented equipment, this is a
viable option and it makes packing and traveling
much easier.

If you dont care for rented equipment, there is
another option. Find out if there are any ski shops in
the area. There usually are. Get prices on skis, poles,
and boots, and then ask if they buy used equipment.
If they dont, ask if there is anyone near by that does
purchase used equipment. Call that place to get an
estimate on how much you could get for barely
used ski equipment. Figure the difference in the
money you will spend on the ski equipment, and the
money you will get for the used equipment when you
are finished with it. If it isnt much more than what it
would cost you to rent the equipment, go for it!

Ski suits, ski jackets, and sweaters can be very
bulky, and hard to pack. These items will take up a
lot of room in your suitcase, and leave less room for
other clothing and essentials. If you are trying to
pack for a two week ski vacation, it will be impossible
to fit everything you need into one suitcase.

There is a way to solve this. Call the lodge or resort
where you will be staying. Tell them that you need
to ship a package, for yourself, to them, and that
you need that package to be there when you arrive.
Ask them if they will hold it for you at the desk. In
most cases, they will. Next, get a box, put all of
your ski suits, your ski jacket, and any other
bulky items in the box, and ship it to yourself, in
care of the lodge or resort. Shipping can be
overnight, two day, or three day depending on
how far it must travel. Depending on how much
the box weighs, you will usually pay less than
fifty dollars to ship a package in the continental
United States.which is a lot less than you
would pay an airline for extra baggage!

I usually make my pilgrimage to Kenco on the eve of the first snow storm like most people do, but I got a coupon from them in the mail the other day so I couldn’t resist stopping by last Friday. It wasn’t very busy yet, but they did have a good clearance sale on boots, and tempting clearance racks. The Mammut Down Coat I fell in love with wasn’t on sale ($229), but I was oh so tempted to splurge! I was good though. They only sell top quality brands (Ibex, North Face, Mammut, Patagonia). I know you get what you pay for, butI told myself I could think it over and the coat will probably still be there in time for the 1st snow storm. Maybe by Black Friday it will be reduced. Kenco sells kayaks and boating gear too. The staff is very friendly and will help you find what you need. They also have an optical center where you can get your eyes tested and buy glasses and sunglasses. For more info visit them at http://www.atkenco.com 1000 Hurley Mountain Road (Right off route 28) , Kingston, NY 12401. (845) 340-0552.
