Forgetfulness occurs at all ages. Minor memory difficulties may not interfere with our everyday living. But, forgetfulness is also a common complaint among older people. However, age alone does not cause a significant decline in memory – many other factors must be considered. Sometimes stress is to blame.

Leading an interesting and stimulating life is vital for those who wish to remain mentally alert. Being in good health also improves mental performance, and exercise may even prevent a decline  in mental as well as physical fitness. Last but not least, remaining relaxed is important, as tension and pressure to remember quickly only increases anxiety which could have a detrimental effect on memory.

While forgetfulness is understandable, people should not lower their expectations about brain function as they age.  Forgetfulness is not a normal part of aging particularly for those in their 30s and 50s. To keep forgetting is painful. But not knowing what to do is the worst kind of suffering.

Dengan Skill Ekonomi prediksi trend akan lebih mudah, misal lebih prospeks mana, antara bisnis toko online mebel ekspor atau bisnis toko online hasil kerajinan.

Just like most people, when I saw this clip of a guy stacking bricks on his head, I was blown away. It defies gravity.  It defies logic. Then, some time later, I was watching a clip of Tiger Woods making a shot that defied logic, too.

But when I think about what’s really going on here, two things come to mind:  Point of view. Practice.

POINT OF VIEW — From my point of view, this is, indeed, quite spectacular. But then, I have never tried stacking bricks on my head. What about the man standing in line? Or, the lady who is handing the men their bricks? From their point of view, I am guessing this is about as ordinary and mundane as it gets. Which leads me to #2…

PRACTICE — How many times do you think this man has practiced stacking bricks on his head? Let’s guess conservatively and say he’s 25 years old and has been doing this since he was 15.  It takes him :43 seconds to stack 20 bricks and walk away…so let’s give him 5 minutes. Let’s say he puts in 8 hours a day and works 5 days a week.

8 hours = 480 minutes / 5 = 96 stacks a day.
96 stacks X 5 days = 480 stacks a week.
480 stacks X 52 weeks = 24,960 stacks a year.
24,960 X 10 years = 249,600 stacks.

Imagine practicing something nearly a quarter of a million times! Tiger Woods started swinging golf clubs as a toddler. I won’t do the math, but just imagine how many times he has practiced his craft. Millions, I’m sure.

In Malcome Gladwell’s book, Outliers, he speaks of a research study that shows it takes humans about 10,000 hours to reach true expertise…true excellence.

- Repetition and practice can result in extraordinary accomplishments

Happiness is there for the taking.

All seasons are beautiful for the person who carries happiness within. Many of us spend our lives searching for happiness. In the end, some are fortunate enough to realize that it is not about having more or doing more or being more. It is about how we view what is already ours.

Be content with such things as you have.

Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. Look around you today and appreciate the riches in your life. Even if your circumstances are troubling and your prospects slim, you can always revel in the vibrant colors of the morning sunrise or the amazing tenacity of a dandelion fighting to conquer its place in the grass.

Happiness is nothing more than good health and a bad memory.

Yes, action may not always bring happiness. But there is no happiness without action. Learn to appreciate what you have. For it is only when you begin to see and appreciate the richness around you, you will almost certainly find that you have a great deal more to be happy about than you once imagined.

Some of us spend a lifetime searching for happiness; looking for peace. They chase idle dreams, addictions, religions, even other people hoping to fill the emptiness that plagues them. The irony is the only place they ever needed to search was within. So your best vitamin to be a happy person is B1.

I reckon, what we call the secret of happiness is no more than our willingness to choose life. As for me, the grand essentials of my happiness are; something to do, something to love and something to hope for.

Twice this morning I found Alden standing in his crib.  His arms are getting stronger!

Are You a Victim of Hurry Sickness

A central element of lifestyle management is the skill to creatively balance achievement and work success with leisure activities, family life and social involvements.

Another critical aspect is the ability to feel comfortable at work and at home and to enjoy the experience of whatever is being done at that moment.

But nowadays, most of us are obsessed with getting results or completing one’s task. When task completion becomes more important than enjoying and understanding the work or activity one is doing at the given moment, a sure victim of “hurry sickness” is born.

The resultant constant sense of urgency is the trap of hurry sickness. One rushes to “get things done” to the point where it becomes an obsession.

Breaking this syndrome requires that you learn to enjoy experiences for the pleasure they give. When you gain pleasure from an experience, there is no need to get things done painstakingly.

Enjoy experiences, not rewards, and things will get done automatically without any constant stressful sense of urgency.

As defined from a psychological perspective, Hurry Sickness is:

“A pervasive and progressively urgent need to complete task in order to obtain rewards at completion without regard for other aspects of the work experience and by using maladaptive time strategies.”

They key causal factor in hurry sickness is the progressive need for task completion.

Enjoying what you are doing is neglected with a morbid urge to getting it done as quickly as possible, no matter what the activity.

The obsessive need for task completion extends to non-work involvements and activities like eating, playing, romance, making love, sex, leisure, having fun, loafing, taking a stroll, recreation, entertainment, leisure, sports, pastimes, hobbies, holidaying, exercising, lazing around, dozing, enjoying music, cooking, gardening, meditating, enjoying “doing nothing” and delightful timepass, what you consider “wasting your time” with your family, wife, kids, pet dog, friends…

This attitude of Hurry Sickness interferes with the enjoyment of these activities and experiences because of the persistent inclination to hurry up and finish it off.

Getting things done has become such a strong need because the payoffs or rewards for completion have assumed primary importance.

Your work experience has taught you that rewards always come at the end of the activity after you have put forth great effort to achieve a goal. You do not realize that happiness is not a destination but the manner of traveling.

Not only do you feel a sense of personal satisfaction from your achievements, but tangible rewards, such as promotion, cash incentives, awards, and advancements are given to you as well. With time, these rewards have become clearly linked with your self-esteem.

Each time you “succeed”, your ego, your inner self, sends a message to you which says, “You have done well. You are a commendable person because you succeeded again.” Your need for this kind of reassurance has become stronger than you would care to admit.

Time-Urgency quickly becomes a strong internal driving force towards task completion. Your life becomes a frenzy of completing one task after another. You are obsessed with time and wasting any of it becomes almost a mortal sin.

You strive to maximize your productivity by using time ever more efficiently, but you also have a sense that you are controlled by time and you don’t like it. Time is both your challenge and your enemy. A telling sign of hurry sickness is that even while relaxing, you are constantly fighting time-urgency and this that causes you unrest and never allows you to totally “switch off”.

Another way to seek to increase your output is to adopt maladaptive time-strategies. These questionable tactics do help you get more done over the short run, but you pay a heavy emotional price.

You now do everything faster, you have learned to “multitask” or “double up,” to do two or more things at once, and you are constantly preparing for what is coming next before you are finished what you are doing now.

The insidious trap is that you get something done quickly even when there is no reason to get anything done at all.

You hurry when there is no need to hurry – even when you have all the time in the world.

Because of your emphasis on task completion, you focus on finishing without regard for other holistic aspects of the experience.

In short, you have lost the ability to enjoy yourself while doing anything because of your incessant drive to get to the finish line.

Because you are afflicted by Hurry Sickness, you have lost the ability to emotionally rejuvenate yourself. Chronic fatigue and pessimism are symptoms of this malady.

SIGNS AND SIGNALS OF HURRY SICKNESS

Here are some behavioral signs, symptoms and signals that indicate hurry sickness:

1. Eating.

You now eat in the office while continuing to work or you just skip meals altogether. You multitask while eating. At home, you eat fast, gulp your food, finish meals well ahead of everyone else and eat in bigger bites without savoring the taste of food. Sharing pleasantries at the table is minimal because you cannot sit long enough. Ask yourself – are you eating mindfully and relishing every morsel of your food?

2. Sex.

Relaxed romantic sex and unhurried love-making is but a pleasant memory. The frequency has reduced and even when you do indulge in sex, it is a quick encounter and you are off to sleep or on to some other more “important” or “urgent” activity. Sex is less spontaneous and more mechanical these days. Love-making has become another hurry-up-and-get-it-done-with activity. Worse, you often indulge in “faking it” in order to get it over with in a hurry so you can quickly get on with the more “important” and “productive” things in life – your “high priority” activities!

3. Communications.

Your communication patterns now focus squarely on the negative. Feedback to others emphasizes mistakes and failings and you rarely compliment or offer sincere support to anyone these days. You don’t take the time any more for pleasant chat with family and colleagues. You have stopped listening. You make demands instead of working cooperatively with others or team-building. And hey, are you on your cell-phone most of the time?

4. Leisure.

You put aside less time for relaxation and you enjoy it less when you actually try to relax. Time-off is now more of a hassle than it is worth. When you sit still, you feel uncomfortable almost immediately. You have lost the ability to “do nothing” – it’s difficult for you to loosen up and enjoy an idle hour relaxing, doing nothing. Ask yourself why you work – reflect, contemplate, think about the fundamental reason why you work and realization will dawn upon you that the primary reason you work is to be able to enjoy your leisure, so why aren’t you taking a vacation every day and learning how to enjoy your leisure with full awareness?

5. Family.

Family members now “report” events to you, but you share little of yourself with them. You and your spouse argue more than you talk. The satisfactions of family life have diminished in quality and quantity. Your impatience is just as strong at home as in the office.

HOW TO CURE HURRY SICKNESS

Because you have hurry sickness, your initial tendency is to effect and expedite your “cure” in a hurry too.

But this hurry-up-and-get-it-done attitude may actually sabotage your recovery. What is required is patience, perspective and the ability to deal with setbacks in healthier ways.

It is easy to blame hurry sickness on the pressures of your job, the stress of daily living and what you have to do to survive in the fast paced world of today and on the insensitivity of the complex modern world. While each of these perceptions has a grain of truth in it, the fact remains that most of the responsibility for hurry sickness lies within you.

Your drive to get ahead is the real root of the problem and the fact is that you have lost all sense of perspective. Until you accept personal responsibility for your present state, you will not be in a position to confront and reverse the real mischief, damage and harm caused by hurry sickness.

Remember the well-known story of the hare and the tortoise.

Decelerate your life a bit, slow down, walk leisurely instead of driving and do not carry or switch off your cell-phone where you can, don’t multitask, do one thing at a time with full awareness and mindfulness and learn to enjoy the experience of whatever you are doing.

Those Excel whizzes over at Codematic are offering a magnificent new service.

Excel support and advice by the hour on a pay as you go basis. It can be on the phone, on email, on a remote server, or on a boat in the Bahamas.

Its dead easy, get in touch to arrange a time and type of support, go and pay via the on-line shop and get your phone /email support at a time to suit.

The idea is for those people who are in a hurry, or have something confidential, or can’t find what they need in the newsgroups or Google to have another option.

Pretty much anything to do with Excel/Access/VBA/COM/XLLS/.net workbooks, add-ins, other systems etc is fair game. And any area: development, testing, deployment, support and maintenace etc. If your query is outside my area of knowledge I’ll say so and we can discuss other options. I’m not going to be bullshitting through something I have no clue about.

If you want to use it for training/coaching, that will work too, we can sort out a syllabus where to find resources and then moniter progress etc.

Intelligence is a skill based uponb looking and knowing. Salespeople who are intelligent – who act this way – are good at looking at and knowing their prospects; the are interested enough in their prospects to see and hear what their needs are.
Experience, when effective, is a combination of having looked at and known enough prospects, and having helped them, to have attained that special skill called, “judgement.”
A salesperson with judgement can close more sales based on his experience as defined here.

Dennis made an interesting comment on a previous thread about how as developers we should be making use of multiple virtual machine technology to mimic our clients’ environments so we can better support them.

Its a good point… but I completely disagree.

Some developers should do that for sure, what Microsoft calls ‘professional’ developers perhaps. I prefer to think of Excel/VBA developers as business developers, we are a bit closer to the business and a bit further away from the bits and bytes of hardcore coding.

We express our business knowledge in Excel and VBA for a variety of reasons. One vital one for me though is ease of deployment and hence support.

If I write a decent spreadsheet in Excel 2000, I can reasonably expect it to work perfectly in Excel 2000, 2002, and 2003. I can expect it to work at least partially in 2007. That is irrespective of the wider target environment, user rights, security credentials, previous installed components, corporate build oddities etc etc. There is no dll hell in Excel*.

If the client has Excel they can run my application. full stop, end of.

(Of course there is a little excitement about macro security, the way they messed up expired signatures, the fact no one uses them because they are such a blatant scam etc)

*(ok so we sometimes get cannot find project or library, but if we keep things close to Excel/VBA and develop with care, and with some consideration for the clients environment that doesn’t happen much, and can usually be easily fixed.)

This trivial deployment leaves us business developers free to invest our time in understanding the business better and improving our software development skills. Deployment skills? system admin/security skills? heard of them, don’t want them or need them.

This is one of the biggest reasons I have not focused on .net – its a deployment nightmare. Of course that’s solvable, just invest a bunch of time and effort learning sys admin stuff and security stuff, and a bit of virtual machine trickery and jobs a good’un. But I don’t want to do that, I want to improve my business knowledge and my coding skillz. Luckily Microsoft cater for folks like me with Excel VBA.

Don’t get me wrong .net works well for corporate developers (once they have the required sys admin knowledge) but for independent devs like me, there is way too much pain to trawl through to distribute and support custom built .net components.

So I care a little bit about my clients environment, but not much. And frankly I think the fact that developers have to spend time and effort creating such close replicas of a clients environment is a hugh fail for Windows software development and for Microsoft. ‘Write once deploy everywhere’ – in yer dreams!

Major service packs? fair enough.  When you need to remotely replicate their level of hotfixes across a broad swathe of operating system components and applications the process is seriously broken IMO.

When I did asp development I had to get intimate with IIS to be able to work out when things went wrong whether it was our code or the server environment. If my Excel apps goes wrong, it’s my code, no investigation required (roughly).

I don’t have anything against .net, there is much about it I like, I just don’t think its aimed at pragmatic delivery focused independent desktop developers (like me). (Hence for the observant, the pic is from .net 1.1 from 2003). I jump at any chances I get to develop in C#, the joy of a modern language and a modern IDE, but this tends to be when I am contracted on-site in the role of corporate dev, rather than independent software developer.

How do you respond to the unexpected? As a matter of fact, some of us are just more flexible than the rest. But don’t you think, being able to “go with the flow” is an ability all of us should master?

A bad attorney almost certainly won’t be conscientious or sufficiently organized to prepare anything close to a good demand package for the insurance company and as a result, the settlement offer the insurance company makes on your case will reflect this.

A good personal injury attorney will be experienced in negotiating personal injury settlements. He or she will also be good at negotiating the medical liens and any amounts that have to be paid out of your settlement for your medical treatment. A bad attorney will recommend that you take the first or second offer an insurance adjuster makes on your case and will also think that you have to pay your medical liens and any medical bill balances dollar for dollar, when in reality, they can often be reduced substantially.

A bad attorney screams and yells at insurance adjusters, putting themselves on the adjuster’s mental list of attorneys they least want to talk to. A good attorney is respectful, even when disagreeing with an insurance adjuster’s evaluation of a case, and persuasive in presenting your claim because he knows all of the details having written a thorough demand letter to get the best settlement possible.

A bad attorney leaves all of the above to his or her staff of secretaries, clerks and paralegals while he or she does other things. A good attorney does virtually all of the legal work himself, leaving just some of the typing to his secretaries and just the research to his law clerks or paralegals (and many good attorneys won’t even delegate the research) while preparing the demand package letter and talking with the insurance adjusters himself or herself.
