<p>So there I was, cute and innocent (noooo) in math class, talkingmto my friends. I think we were discussing David Garrett&#8230;</p>

<p>For anyone whom doesn&#8217;t know, this is David Garrett, my newest obsession. To me, he is the most amazing violinist. (Amazing looking, too. XD)</p>
<p>It took willpower to only post one picture&#8230;</p>
<p>So, anyways, I was in math class obsessing over David Garrett to  my friends (&#8220;Omigawd, Mercy, you&#8217;re OBSESSED! Give it up!&#8221;), when this kid (let&#8217;s call him Ray, for the sake of discussion) inturrupts.</p>
<p>Before you continue, let me just mention that &#8220;Ray&#8221; is mad at me because I ripped up his paper contraptions that he keeps pelting at me in class&#8230; including a ball od paper wrapped up in tape, several footballs, and a frog&#8230;</p>
<p>So Ray interrupts and says, &#8220;You know what&#8217;s cool? SKILLET. Skillet is cool.&#8221;</p>
<p>And I reply, &#8220;Oh, yeah. I&#8217;ve heard of Skillet.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Really? Name one song.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Ummm&#8230; I dunno. Whispers in the Dark?&#8221; (Yeah, I&#8217;m feigning idiocy. So?)</p>
<p>He&#8217;s silent for the longest moment in his existence&#8211; about 4 seconds.</p>
<p>&#8220;Woah, Mercy knows Skillet! She just became a little bit cooler.&#8221;</p>
<p>*class ends*</p>
<p>So&#8230; there you have it? I&#8217;m officially a bit cooler than I already was, somehow? Eh?</p>
<p>Really, if anyone can explain the weird stuff I post about, please do. I don&#8217;t know what kind of sad being would read my blog&#8230;</p>

<title><![CDATA[Concert Review: Skillet, Hawk Nelson, Decyfer Down]]></title>

<description><![CDATA[I must be crazy. Really crazy. I finished classes for the semester at UNCW on Wednesday December 2, ]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>I must be crazy. <em>Really</em> crazy. I finished classes for the semester at UNCW on Wednesday December 2, woke up Thursday and drove from Wilmington, North Carolina to my hometown, Chattanooga, Tennessee. My roommates were sad that I chose to leave so quickly, but there was this band playing in Chattanooga, a band that I have a hard time not going to see if I have the opportunity. Skillet. That’s my obsession. I’ve been following them for eight years now, ever since I heard “Alien Youth” on a compilation CD I bought from a local Christian bookstore.</p>
<p>So I drove nine long hours, got home around 5:30 p.m., quickly changed—combat boots are always a must when attending a rock concert—and then my dad and I went to the venue, Memorial Auditorium in downtown Chattanooga.</p>
<p>I’d forgotten just how nice Memorial is, aside from the bathrooms which looked like they hadn’t been updated in 20 years. We found our plush, maroon seats in row BB—the farthest back I’ve ever sat at a Skillet concert. I’m used to general admission where you can wander up to the front and slip into the mosh pit. But this was assigned seating, so even though I really wanted to rush the stage, I resisted.</p>

<p>The last time I saw Skillet (way back in April of this year) they were touring with Disciple and this band I’d never heard of—Decyfer Down. I was late getting to that concert and only caught the last song of Decyfer Down, but that was all it took. I immediately bought their latest album, <em>Crash</em>, which recently received a Grammy nomination for Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album. If you are fans of Red, which also received a nomination in the same category, then you’ll be a fan of Decyfer Down.</p>
<p>The show began with the stage completely dark—a deep voice came over the speakers, “Jesus spoke these words 2000 years ago,” and then a guitar kicked in, people began screaming. The voice continued speaking, quoting scripture—I think, the sound mixer seemed to overlook the fact that some people actually wanted to understand speakers and lyrics. The lights flashed on, and Decyfer Down rocked it! Being the opening band, they only played for about 30 minutes, but they continued to tell the crowd their purpose for being on stage—to worship God and lead people to Christ. If Decyfer Down continues to produce excellent music, they’ll be around for quite a long time.</p>

<p>Next to take the stage was Hawk Nelson. They seem like nice guys, but after listening to the melodic and rockin’ guitars of Decyfer Down, their sound just didn’t compare. A blend between punk and pop rock, Hawk Nelson just isn’t my taste. I spent the first half of their set waiting to talk to TJ Harris, lead singer of Decyfer Down (can you tell I’ve become a huge fan of theirs?). He was a nice guy, kindly talking to fans, signing everything from CD covers, to converse shoes, to a cell phone, and posing for pictures.</p>

<p>Back to Hawk Nelson. Their lead singer, Jason Dunn was sick and commented that the Robitussin was making him loopy. I give him props for being about to go on with the show while being sick. And he, and I’m assuming the rest of the band, really seemed to care about making an impact. Dunn encouraged the crowd to sign up for the Mocha Club in the lobby. For a donation of 7 dollars a month, it helps get medicine to children in Africa. For everyone who signed up at the concert, Hawk Nelson gave them a free copy of latest CD, <em>Live Life Loud</em>.</p>
<p>My biggest complaint for the night would be for the unnecessarily long transition between Hawk Nelson and Skillet. Maybe I was just a little anxious to see Skillet, so it seemed too long for me. But as always, it was worth it—everything, my nine hour drive, my frantic packing the night before, the insane amount of caffeine I had had to keep me awake in the car.</p>
<p>The stage went black, and once again a disembodied voice came through the speakers. This time it gave a health warning, that if you weren’t prepared to have you face rocked off, you should consult a doctor, and saying that Skillet was not responsible for crazy behavior (jumping around, screaming till you had no voice, etc.,) that occurred at the concert. Then it began counting down. 10…9…8…7…6…5…4…3…2…1</p>

<p>BOOM! The drums thunderously came to life, the guitars wailed, and John Cooper’s scratchy voice shouted, “Hello, Chattanooga!” The crowd went wild. Skillet has come a long way since I first saw them, eight years ago in a school or church gym outside Atlanta, Georgia. Now their shows are a full-scale rock concert complete with flashing lights and two rising platforms frequented by Ben Kasica and Korey Cooper, and sometimes Jonathan Chu (violin) and Tate Olsen (cello). It all reminded me of Trans-Siberian Orchestra.</p>
<p>About half-way through, John Cooper asked the crowd, “Who here has never been to a Skillet concert?” Over half the crowd raised their hand. Then he asked for “repeat offenders.” He pointed to someone near the front and commented that this guy always seems to be at concerts in this area. This was the guy’s 13<sup>th</sup> concert. I shouted that I was at 10, but was too far away for John to hear.</p>
<p>The crowd went wild when they played “Monster,” Skillet’s current hit single that is making its way into mainstream. And hearing “Awake and Alive” live was amazing. I love the lyrics to that song; “I’m awake, I’m alive. Now I know what I believe inside. Now it’s my time. I’ll do what I want ’cause this is my life. Right here, right now. I’ll stand my ground and never back down. I know what I believe inside. I’m awake and I’m alive.” </p>
<p>I do wish that they had played some of their older songs for those fans who’ve been around a long time. But when you have 8 albums, including a worship album, it must be hard to pick songs for a set list.</p>
<p>Overall, it was an excellent show. If you have to choose one Christian rock band to see in concert, I highly recommend Skillet.</p>

<p>I made this the other night when I found some sweet bell peppers I&#8217;d forgotten about in my crisper drawer. My local grocery store was selling yellow, red and orange peppers for $1 apiece, so I bought one of each. They tasted amazing with the other flavors in this stir-fry, and the bulk amount of them meant I barely had to add any meat to the skillet.</p>

<p>Begin by heating 2 tablespoons cooking oil over <strong><em>MEDIUM</em></strong> in the bottom of a deep skillet or wok.</p>
<p>While skillet warms, chop 2-3 bell peppers, any variety, into large chunks. Quarter a large onion and set aside with pepper pieces.</p>

<p>Slice about 1/2 or 3/4 lb. thin-sliced boneless pork chops (about 6 thin chops) into large bites and toss into warm skillet. Coat meat well with the warm oil and stir often.</p>
<p>Allow pork to cook about halfway done before adding peppers and onion. Keep ingredients moving with a wooden spoon.</p>

<p>Sprinkle 1 teaspoon ground ginger and 1 teaspoon garlic powder over mixture. Add 1 tablespoon soy sauce and 1 tablespoon vinegar (cider or red wine is best) and stir again.</p>

<p>Add the contents of a 20-ounce can of pineapple tidbits (including all juice) to stir-fry and bring to simmer.</p>
<p>Once simmering, add approximately 2 teaspoons corn starch and 2 teaspoons brown sugar to thicken sauce.</p>
<p>Remember that the sauce will thicken more once skillet is</p>

<p>removed from burner and allowed to cool slightly, so don&#8217;t worry if there is still a lot of liquid to your dish during cook time.</p>

<p>Once pork is cooked evenly and pepper chunks are somewhat tender (but not soft or limp), remove skillet from heat and serve immediately</p>
<p>over rice, noodles or hot bean sprouts. Refrigerate any remaining stir-fry and reheat for phenomenal leftovers later!</p>

<p>I am not a stranger to blogging.  I was, for many years, an avid blogger on <a title="live journal" href="http://iyamthesisko.livejournal.com/" target="_blank">live journal</a>, but as <a title="Stephen King" href="http://www.stephenking.com/index.html">Stephen King</a> so beautifully articulated in his <a title="Dark Tower Series" href="http://www.stephenking.com/darktower/">Dark Tower series</a>,&#8221;the world has moved on.&#8221;</p>
<p>So it is that while I am an aspiring writer, actor, director, producer, graphic designer, artist, and photographer, I must now add a new title to that gargantuan list of nomenclatures:  aspiring blogger of the modern world.</p>
<p>I will attempt to write every day, but I make no promises.  Topics will be varied, I imagine, from <a title="Star Trek" href="http://startrek.com">Star Trek</a> to the annals of <a title="Biblical Law" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblical_law_in_Christianity">Biblical law</a>, <a href="http://www.theobamayoudontknow.com/">conservative watch-dog pontifications</a>, book and film reviews, how-to tutorials&#8230; I am, as my father often says, &#8220;full of it.&#8221;  Whatever it is, I promise to attempt some sort of intellectual entertainment.</p>

Am trecut coltul si soarele care stralucea destul de puternic mi-a acaparat privirea pentru cateva momente in care mi-au venit atatea amintiri de vara trecuta incat picioarele mi s-au inmuiat, abea cand autobuzul a trecut peste un damb si m-a &#8220;scuturat&#8221; de cateva ori m-am trezit din nou la realitate.</p>
<p>Langa mine era o fata, la care am incetat sa ma uit abia dupa ce baiatul de langa ea a luat-o in brate si ea l-a pupat pe obraz. Tot ce stiu este ca s-a uitat si ea odata la mine si mi-a zambit, cred ca nu ar fi trebuit sa fiu atat de insistent nu. In fine, o femeie in varsta s-a ridicat de pe scaun si si-a impins in mine toate cele, desigur ca tot vina mea a fost pentru ca nu s-a obosit macar sa se uite piciorul cui l-a strivit.</p>
<p>Apoi am simtit cum &#8230; ceva a inceput sa ma &#8220;manance&#8221;. Stateam cu o mana in buzunar si cu una ma tineam strans de o bara. Nu am avut ce face asa ca am incercat sa ignor acest lucru care parea ca nu vrea sa inceteze, ba chiar parca se amplifica cu fiecare secunda in care incercam sa-l ignor. Apoi am simtit o picatura de &#8220;sudoare&#8221; cum imi curge pe spate, lucru care m-a facut sa bufnesc practic in ras. De ce? Nu stiu exact, m-am &#8220;lipit&#8221; cu spatele de tipa din dreapta pentru a &#8220;scapa&#8221; temporar de acea picatura. Ma bucur ca nu s-a intors sa ma intrebe daca am patit ceva.</p>
<p>Apoi a venit statia in care majoritatea (90%) dintre &#8220;calatorii cu transportul in comun&#8221; coboara si spre surprinderea mea a coborat si tipa la care m-am holbat atata timp. Asa ca mi-am adus aminte de acel mic discomfort creat de partile mele genitale. Si ma bucur ca am resuit sa scap fara a ma &#8220;scarpina&#8221; pentru ca sa fim seriosi arata &#8230; cat se poate de indecent si lipsit de orice maniera sau educatie dar &#8230; se intampla nu?</p>
<p>Stiu ca unul dintre motivele pentru care iubesc eu vara este ca nu trebuie sa porti geaca, adica urasc pur si simplu gecile. Tin cald stiu &#8230; dar eu vreau sa ma simt liber nu cu o chestie pe mine. Si intr-un final am ajuns si la statia care este cea mai apropiata de casa mea. Am coborat si am luat-o la vale pentru ca mai am ceva de mers. Soarele inca stralucea destul de tare lucru  destul de ciudat pentru o zi de Ianuarie.</p>

<p>Traditionally baked in a cast-iron skillet, this classic American cake is rich, buttery, sweet and can be made with apples, pear, peach, apricot and more.</p>
<p>1 1/2 (20-ounce) cans (14 pineapple slices, fresh or canned)</p>
<p>14 pitted sweet cherries</p>
<p>4 tbsp unsalted butter</p>
<p>1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar</p>
<p>1/4 pecan halves</p>
<p>1/2 cup sour cream</p>
<p>1 tsp vanilla</p>
<p>1 1/2 sifted cake flour</p>
<p>3/4 cup sugar</p>
<p>3/4 tsp baking powder</p>
<p>1/4 tsp baking soda</p>
<p>1/4 tsp salt</p>
<p>9 tbsp unsalted butter</p>
<p><em>Preheat oven to 350 F</em></p>
<p><em>Prep 10-inch Springform pan (optional)</em></p>
<p><strong>Fruit Topping:</strong></p>
<p>Drain pineapple slices and cherries and place on paper towel to absorb moisture. You will need 8 whole pineapple slices and 8 whole cherries. Halve 6 of the remaining slices and the remaining cherries.</p>
<p>1. In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar until moistened and remove from the heat. Pour mixture in a 10-inch spring form pan or keep in skillet.</p>
<p>2. Place 1 whole pineapple slice in the center of your 10-inch springform pan or skillet and 7 whole slices surrounding it. Place the halves slices side by side against the sides of the pan, the two cut edges down touching the brown sugar.</p>
<p>3. Place the whole cherries in the center of the whole pineapple slices; the halved cherries in the center of the halved cherries. Tuck the pecans into and gaps between the fruits.</p>
<p><strong>Cake Batter:</strong></p>
<p>1. In a medium bowl, combine yolks, about 1/4 of the sour cream, and vanilla. In a large bowl, combine the dry ingredients and mix to blend. Add butter and the remaining sour cream, mix on low until dry ingredients are moistened. Increase to medium or (high if using a hand  mixer) for 1 1/2 minutes to develop the cake&#8217;s structure. scrape down the sides.</p>
<p>2. Gradually add the egg mixture to the batter in 3 batches, beating for 20 seconds after each addition to strengthen the cake&#8217;s structure. Scrape batter into fruit-lined skillet or 10-inch spring form pan, smoothing evenly with spatula.</p>
<p>3.  Bake for 40 to 50 minutes or until golden brown and the cake tester inserted comes out clean. Run a small knife around the sides and invert at once onto a serving plate. If using a skillet, leave the skillet in place one or two minutes before lifting. Enjoy!</p>

<p>Sweet potatoes, probably about two pounds, peeled and chopped into thick hunks. Two pounds is approximate. You should have enough sweet potatoes, when chopped, to fill your skillet.<br />
1 stick of butter<br />
1 pound of brown sugar<br />
Water<br />
Cast-iron skillet<br />
Instructions</p>
<p>1. Fill cast-iron skillet with peeled and chopped sweet potatoes.</p>
<p>2. Add enough water to not-quite-cover the sweet potatoes.</p>
<p>3. Cut stick of butter into pats and add it to the skillet. Add entire 1 lb. bag of brown sugar to the skillet as well.</p>
<p>4. Bring to a boil. Then reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for about an hour. The liquid should become thick and bubbly, like a gooey delicious tar pit. Sweet potatoes are done when they are soft and glazed-looking.</p>

<p>The cornbread was very moist and had great flavor.  I am a big fan of using buttermilk in baked breads and cakes and the buttermilk flavor came through strong for me.  I could&#8217;ve almost eaten this with a fork.  It was very good and I&#8217;ll definitely be making it as long as I do Weight Watchers.</p>

<p>1/2 cup buttermilk</p>
<p>2 large egg whites</p>
<p>2 tsp corn oil</p>

<p>Preheat oven to 400ºF. Coat an 8-inch square cake pan or 8&#8243; skillet as I&#8217;ve done here, with cooking spray. (I used my pastry brush and brushed the skillet with oil.)</p>

<p>Combine cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt and baking soda in a large bowl. Mix well with a fork, then make a well in the center; set aside.</p>

<p>Combine creamed corn, buttermilk, egg whites and oil in a medium bowl; mix until blended. Fold mixture into dry ingredients; mix until blended. Pour batter into prepared pan and smooth the top.</p>

<p>Bake until a wooden pick inserted near the center comes out clean, about 20 minutes. Allow to cool in pan on a wire rack for 10 minutes. Remove from pan; cool completely before cutting into 8 squares.</p>

<title><![CDATA[Skillet Corn Bread]]></title>

<p style="text-align:left;">I&#8217;ve made corn bread and corn muffins before, but with my new <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Lodge-Logic-4-Inch-Pre-Seasoned-Skillet/dp/B00006JSUA" target="_blank">cast iron skillet</a> obsession, I knew I had to make some in there. The skillet is meat, so I had to find a recipe that I could make pareve.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">I decided on a recipe with buttermilk and used rice dream with a drop of vinegar in it. The buttermilk you buy in the store isn&#8217;t real buttermilk, anyway, so why not just acidify some milk substitute? (<a href="http://www.kateshomemadebutter.com/Kates-Butter_buttermilk.html" target="_blank">This</a> is real buttermilk.)</p>

<p style="text-align:left;">I found a recipe for &#8220;<a href="http://allrecipes.com/recipe/real-southern-cornbread/detail.aspx" target="_blank">real southern cornbread</a>&#8221; using a 12-inch skillet. It got pretty good reviews, so I decided to try it out. Because my skillet is 10 inches, I halved the recipe, based on one of the comments.. It made the perfect amount.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Ingredients:</p>
<ul>
<li>1 cup cornmeal</li>
<li>1 cup flour</li>
<li>1/4 teaspoon salt</li>
<li>1 tablespoon baking powder</li>
<li>2 cups Rice Dream or soymilk with two tablespoons vinegar or lemon juice</li>
<li>1 egg</li>
<li>1/2 cup corn oil + 2 tablespoons more for skillet</li>
</ul>
<p>Directions:</p>
<p>1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.</p>
<p>2. Combine Rice Dream and vinegar. Let sit for two minutes.</p>

<p>3. Combine dry ingredients in a medium bowl. Set aside.</p>

<p>4. Combine wet ingredients in a large bowl.</p>
<p>5. Pour the dry ingredients into the wet. Stir only until it&#8217;s all combined &#8211; a few lumps are fine! You don&#8217;t want to mix it too much and have tough corn bread!</p>

<p style="text-align:left;">6. Preheat skillet over high heat for 2 minutes. Pour in oil and coat the bottom and sides of the pan. Return to heat and let sit for another minute. Pour in the batter and cook for about 5 minutes, until bubbles appear on top. Transfer to the oven and bake for 40-50 minutes, until the edges are slightly crispy.</p>

<p>I served it warm with some Soy Garden on top. A perfect Sunday morning breakfast, but it would probably be good as a side dish at dinner. I&#8217;m definitely make this recipe next time I make chili or slow-cooked stew.</p>

<p>That God is not tame.  He&#8217;s not controllable.  He&#8217;s wild and free, and that He releases that in us as His people, when we let Him.  Think of it like that scene in The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe where Mr. Tumnus the faun tells Lucy &#8220;We mustn&#8217;t press him.  After all, he&#8217;s not a tame lion.&#8221;</p>
<p>When we give ourselves to Him totally, He makes us untamable, wild, and reckless worshipers, healers of people. According to Mary Harris Jones, &#8220;I am not a humanitarian.  I am a hell raiser.&#8221;  <span style="color:#2ed038;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="color:#2ed038;"><span style="color:#000000;">This verse of scripture stuck out at me during all of this. </span>&#8220;From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it.&#8221; (Matt. 11:12  NIV).</span> Another word for forceful might be &#8216;violent&#8217; or &#8216;wild&#8217;.</p>
<p>The other part of the vision God gave me is this:  He&#8217;s coming.  He&#8217;s getting ready to pour out His presence and His righteousness on this land, this people.  Belton, TX is about to be rocked to the core.  It reminded me of a song by Skillet, &#8220;Energy&#8221;:</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>When it comes to songs I don’t know which type of songs I like but I am very selective. I may like some songs of the bands but not all. Linkin Park is my favorite band and the band’s lead singer Chester Bennington is my favorite  singer.</p>

<p>No need of any introduction for this rock band as everyone is aware of their best songs. But still for those unfortunates who don’t know….. Well “They are the best in the business”! Linkin Park is an American metal band<a href="http://vivek92.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/linkinpark.jpg"><img class="size-thumbnail wp-image-239 alignleft" title="Linkin Park(members)" src="http://vivek92.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/linkinpark.jpg?w=150" alt="" width="150" height="112" /></a>. It was formed in 1996. Nu metal and rap are the band’s genres. Their debut album Hybrid Theory was a big success selling more than 4million copies. Well that was enough for a big fan base and moreover their following albums also got the same attention. Till now Hybrid Theory, Meteora and Minutes to midnight are the albums named to their fame and hard work and superb songs. They have won American Music Awards, Grammy Awards, MTV Asia Awards, and much more. The band members are Chester Bennington – vocals, rhythm guitar, Mike Shinoda – vocals, rhythm guitar, samples, keyboards, Brad Delson – lead guitar, backing vocals, Dave &#8220;Phoenix&#8221; Farrell – bass guitar, backing vocal, Rob Bourdon – drums, percussion, backing vocals, Mr. Hahn – turntables, programming, samples, backing vocals. I like many of their songs but these are the most which I like:</p>
<p>numb, crawling, somewhere I belong, in the end, place for my head, breaking the habit, points of authority.</p>

Skillet, Hey You, I Love Your Soul, Invincible, Ardent Worship, Alien Youth, Collide, <a href="http://vivek92.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/skillet_2jpg_jqpe.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-240" title="skillet(members)" src="http://vivek92.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/skillet_2jpg_jqpe.jpg?w=150" alt="" width="150" height="115" /></a>Comatose, and Awake are the albums till date. I like their guitar work and moreover John Cooper’s voice also impressed me. The band was also nominated for two Grammy Awards. Hard rock, industrial rock, and symphonic rock are the genres of the band. My personal best are:</p>

<p>Godsmack</p>

Godsmack, Awake, Faceless, The Other Side, IV, Good Times, Bad Times&#8230;Ten Years of Godsmack. Godsmack has been nominated for four Grammy Awards<a href="http://vivek92.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/godsmack.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-241" title="Godsmack(members)" src="http://vivek92.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/godsmack.jpg?w=147" alt="" width="147" height="150" /></a>. Alternative metal, heavy metal, nu metal post-grunge, rock are their genres. Faceless and IV were two consecutive #1 albums on the Billboard 200. I love their style of making and executing songs, though I only like their two songs: I stand alone and Straight out of line.</p>

<p>Besides the songs of these bands, I also like the song of Greenday – (Boulevard of broken dreams), Oasis – (Wonderwall), Blue – (One love), Enigma – (Sadness,Gravity of love), A perfect circle – (Rose).</p>
