When I saw this lovely bright and luscious dress at Ninia, the Big Maybelle song Candy jumped into my head and stayed there. Of course, it was her deep, syrupy voice that makes the song, that signature growl of hers, but for whatever reason, it’s always a joy to get Big Maybelle’s music on your mind.

Shiny Things has some wonderful sandals that are perfectly candy-like. The come with these light wood platforms or with dark cherry platforms.

The lovely Fresh Baked Goods Thumbprint Cookie jewelry set reminds me of Stained Glass Candy that my sister makes. Basically, it’s cooking a simple syrup so that it will set hard and brittle and then dropping a dash of food coloring and food flavoring in it. She usually uses anise with red coloring, mint with green, etc. When you’re cooking simple syrup to a hard crack stage a lot of steam rises. Here’s a very important tip, when you drop your anise flavoring in, whatever you do, don’t be close enough for that anise infused steam to get on your face and eyes. It’s a whole new world of hurt.

Today we should be thankful. In real life, I am thankful for my family, my job, fucking medical insurance, having the best cats EVER, the coffee bean and some great GREAT friends that fill my heart with joy.

In Second Life, as a dreaded and despised blogger, I am thankful too. Here are five things that make me smile in SL. May your cup never run dry, your arms never tire and your bodies always be warm! A thousand kisses to you and yours….

Slaughter City – I love the Slaughter City sims owned by Putrid Gloom. They are my home and there are no words to describe how thankful I am for Miss Gloom. She’s a wonder, a delight, irreverent and brighter than any sun. My Second Life wouldn’t be the same without her. She is the rock in which so many designers have trusted in and I truly admire that about Miss Gloom. My boo, you are straight trippin with your gangsta love.

Minnu Palen – I absolutely adore Minnu Palen. I think she and her collection of great people have really elevated Second Life business to do better. No matter what people say, I know that she’s pretty great, charming, generous and lovely to work for/with/and around. I am VERY thankful to call her a friend and truly admire her artistic vision.

&Bean Skin – I don’t get a lot of free stuff for my blog. A majority of what I write about, I pay for out of pocket. I am happy to do that too! But when Keiko Morigi gave me her line of new skin, I almost fell out of my chair. I am SOOOO fucking thankful for my &Bean skin. I find it difficult to NOT wear. Thank you Miss Morigi. I am so very thankful of you and your amazing talent.

Fifty Linden Fridays – Despite their “laugh-out-loud” copyright^ disclaimer at the bottom of the announcement notecard, I am very thankful for Fifty Linden Fridays. I think this is a wonderful way of getting to know some neat vendors. Often, prices would have stopped me from trying their work. Now, through this “program” I can totally check them out and see some amazing talent in action. OMGWTF Barbecue, well done.

Skunk Anansie are somewhat of an enigma, on the one hand they can hardly be called conventional or mainstream. On the other, frontwoman Skin they have someone with a voice and a can’t-take-your-eyes-off-her presence that your average X-Factor contestant would, and should, kill for.

That’s not to say that she is in anyway conventional either, with her voice ranging from the deceptively soulful to full on growl.

So this is a welcome return to the live arena for one of Britain’s best live bands after eight long years away.

Wolverhampton is ready, the atmosphere is electric and Skunk Anansie, and Skin in particular, are back and ready to rip the place to shreds.

Thankfully they don’t disappoint, rushing through anthems from all 3 albums, and all the new songs from the recent greatest hits album.

Weak in particular is astonishing, with 5000 people screaming it at the tops of their voices and Skin climbing onto the balcony giving the seating crowd a view unrivalled anywhere in the venue.

After barely an hour the main set is through, but the energy expended by crowd and band in that time is far in excess of what you’d expect from such a short, but intense, set.

Unbelievably, the band has enough energy left to rip through not one, but two encores.

This is a great show, in a venue renowned for great shows, and Skunk Anansie are well and truly back in the kind of form they were always known for in their prime.

Summer festivals are going to be immense, with any band going to struggle to follow Skunk Anansie on form like this.

A study found that inaudible puffs of air delivered alongside certain sounds influenced what participants thought they were listening to.
Writing in the journal Nature, the team said the findings showed that audio and visual clues were not the only important factors in how people hear.
The findings may lead to better aids for the hard of hearing, experts said.
It is already well known that visual cues from a speaker’s face can enhance or interfere with how a person hears what is being said.

If further research can show the same effect is observed when listening to everyday conversation in the ‘real’ world, then it could help improve hearing aids

In the latest study, researchers at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver wanted to look at whether tactile sensations also affected how sounds are heard.
They compared sounds which when spoken are accompanied by a small inaudible breath of air, such as “pa” and “ta” with sounds which do not such as “ba” and “da”.
At the same time, participants were given – or not – a small puff of air to the back of the hand or the neck.
They found that “ba” and “da”, known as unaspirated sounds, were heard as the aspirated equivalents, “pa” and “ta”, when presented alongside the puff of air.
