How does the Fraxel Laser Treatment work? The innovative Fraxel Restore Laser is specially designed

How does the Fraxel Laser Treatment work?

The innovative Fraxel Restore Laser is specially designed to alter only fractional volumes of the target tissue. Similar to precise alteration of photographs and paintings, the clinical effect of this treatment technique is to alter the appearance of aging and sun-damaged skin. The creation of tiny microscopic wounds results in a wound healing process and a response to the coagulation of collagen fibers.

What are the benefits?

After your very first Fraxel Laser Treatment, you will begin to feel the difference in your skin, as it gradually becomes softer, smoother and fresher. Fine lines around your eyes will noticeably fade. So will uneven coloring and the brown spots caused by aging and sun exposure. Fraxel is considered the treatment of choice for Acne Scarring and effective for other scars such as post traumatic or surgical scarring.

What does the Fraxel Laser treat?

Fraxel Laser is probably the best treatment available for removing acne scars (check out our Acne Scar blog for more information). Fraxel is also used to eliminate age spots/brown spots, melasma, surgical scars, stretch marks & fine facial wrinkles.

What does the treatment feel like?

Treatment is well tolerated and feels like a prickling sensation. A topical anesthetic ointment is applied prior to treatment to allay any discomfort. Highly effective treatment with minimal downtime. Results can be comparable to full resurfacing techniques.

Good news – with the innovative Fraxel Restore there are no more blue faces because there’s no more blue dye!

How long does the treatment take?

The anesthetic requires 45-60 minutes to take full effect. The treatment is then performed using the lipid base anesthetic ointment as the contact lubricant. A treatment typically will take approximately 20-25 minutes.

Is there any downtime?

Mild swelling should subside within a day or so, and redness usually fades over several days. Patients can apply make-up immediately after treatment and return to routine activities.

Think you’re too young for Botox? Think again! Studies are showing that girls are starting to receive botox injections at a younger age. They are doing this as a preventative measure, and really that is very smart!!! I think a lot of people are under the misconception that botox is for old people, when in fact the younger you start the better.

Botox is commonly used in areas that have dynamic muscle movement like the frown. The more you frown the deeper the lines become. In our office alone, we have 3 staff members in their 20’s who are using botox as a preventative measure both in the frown and around the eyes and they are loving the smooth results. The trick is to catch the lines before they have an opportunity to permanently scar your skin.

I heard an anaology the other day that was perfect, ” think of a crumpled piece of paper, when you flatten it back out the lines remain visible on the paper. Think of your skin in the same way. ” Botox relaxes the muscle under the skin, thereby stopping the wrinkling effect you see on the skin’s surface. Which brings me to the point that Botox is a safe, easy and extremely effective way to deal with unwanted lines and wrinkles for people of all ages.

If you want more information on how Botox can help your unwanted lines and wrinkles call the office at 604 421 3111or visit our website http://www.lougheedlaser.com/botox.html

It’s the holiday season again which means buying gifts for loved ones. Here are my top 5 gift

It’s the holiday season again which means buying gifts for loved ones. Here are my top 5 gift ideas for mums-to-be:

Pregnancy massage – Mums-to-be generally feel tired and suffer from back aches, swollen legs and ankles and sometimes even sciatica. A pregnancy massage can help alleviate all these nasties and also give a much needed hour of rest in the middle of the day. The Sutherland-Chan Centre has gift certificates for all treatments and their expert therapists can also recommend special exercises that will help with the aches and pains of pregnancy. If a full body massage is too much consider a foot massage which is also a great gift idea as long as mum-to-be is past her first trimester.

Pregnancy and baby books – You can never have too many points of reference when you are pregnant. Books on pregnancy and baby books are a great gift idea especially for the first time mom. My favourite was “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” by Heidi Murkoff, Arlene Eisenberg, and Sandee Hathaway. If you’d prefer something with more humour “Dummies for Mummies” by Hong Kong’s own Sarah Brennan is a good choice.

Dummies for Mummies by Sarah Brennan

Pregnancy Journal – A pregnancy journal is a book that allows you to record your month to month pregnancy journey. Questions prompt mum-to-be to capture the most important moments of pregnancy. It provides room to record doctor visits, baby’s development, the physical changes and symptoms, and room for pictures. Pregnancy Journals are also great keepsakes. Notable ones include Tummy Talk and The Essential Organizer “40 weeks +” & “Birth to 1 Year” which helps keep track of baby’s development in the first year.

Tummy Talk Pregnancy Book

Cashmere Wrap – There is nothing like snuggling up during the Winter season and a cashmere wrap is the coziest item around. This is a decadent gift but it’s a classic so it’s the gift that keeps on giving even after the baby is born. Notable designs from Madeleine Thompson and Eric Bompard.

Madeleine Thompson Cashmere Wrap

Organic Body Products – Nothing says love more than oils and creams that will stop stretch marks! Mums-to-be should start applying twice a day from 4 months to 1 month after birth which means she will be going through a lot of product. Look for organic brands free from synthetic additives such as parabens, phthalates, petroleum derivatives and synthetic fragrances. Notable brands include The Spoiled Mama and Earth Mama.

The Spoiled Mama Ultimate Gift Set

Wow. I can honestly say I never thought I’d say this, ever. But I agree with Rosie O’Don

Wow. I can honestly say I never thought I’d say this, ever. But I agree with Rosie O’Donnell.

I didn’t trust her at all back in the day when she had a talk show and was obsessed with Tom Cruise. I know Tom Cruise does it for some people, but not for me. I’ve always been more of a Hugh Jackman girl, and if he’s not available, call Clive Owen or Daniel Craig.

But Rosie O said that “exposure to the sun isn’t dangerous,” and I agree. Now, before the skin cancer lynch mob successfully beats down my door, I must clarify my own position on this issue and give some background on my opinion.

This country has a terrible problem with cancer. All types of cancer. This has really puzzled scientists and doctors and all sorts of people who wear white coats to work. But recently, the UC San Diego’s School of Medicine had a lightbulb moment about cancer and a possible cause. They realized that many of the diseases that plague modern society and are often blamed on pollution, plastic, sugar etc etc, might actually be caused by a vitamin D deficiency. (I would normally shorten that to VD, but I’m not feeling that playful tonight.) In fact, the math/science types at UCSD made an entire website devoted to vitamin D deficiency. I suggest you check it out.

Why does the modern world have such a serious problem with vitamin D? Because the body makes vitamin D naturally… from sunlight exposure. We’re known for sitting on our butts inside all day at work until we drive home to sit on our butts inside there. For one week in the summer we go to the beach and either wear enough sunscreen to make coworkers think we lied about going, or so little that the chef at the seafood restaurant chases us with a pot of boiling water, thinking we’re lobsters. Neither of these is good, because we should take our sunlight in moderation, because, as my mother says, “the skin never forgets a ray of sun,” or so we’ve been told.

Unfortunately, certain people aren’t privy to as much sunlight as others. Canadians, for instance, don’t get nearly as much strong sunlight as we southerners do. Neither do people in Maine, North Dakota, or Michigan. All of those people have worse cancer problems than those who do get regular sun.

Now I’m not any sort of “back to nature” type, but I do think that earlier people did something right (except in the Middle Ages, when they all died at 25). They walked around outside, and they ate natural food. Oreos were hard to come by in the 3rd century. We should probably take the hint, and do more of what they did, like spending some time outside without sunscreen.

Naturally, when Rosie O said what she did, the skin cancer people grabbed their ropes and ran out the door, then ran back in and slathered on the SPF 120, then ran out again, hot on Rosie’s trail. They said what she said was “irresponsible.” I think her flock of seagulls hair cut was more irresponsible than this episode, but tomato/ tomahto.

Apparently the research is so strong that the Canadian government has recommended that all Canadians take a superdose of the vitamin in order to stave off cancer and other diseases. It really makes sense, I think. We’ve switched from spending tons of time outside to almost none in about a century, and consequently, diseases are stalking us. Consider this: the “flu season.” Why is it that the flu comes in winter and stays til early spring until it magically disappears? It’s because people aren’t going outside in the cold winter, and they don’t have any vitamin D to fight off getting sick. Once the weather improves and it’s nice outside though–wham! People are out in the sun again, making boatloads of vitamin D, effectively ending the flu season. Interesting thought, no?

Now I’m not sure I agree with Rosie O entirely, however, because she also says she “lives to tan.” I’ve never liked lying around in the sun, because I’ve always been afraid that a bug would crawl on me. But what’s wrong with working in the yard for 30 minutes in the heat of the day?

Whenever I go to the beach and don’t put on too much sunscreen, my skin improves within 2 or 3 days. I usually don’t have breakouts for a week or more after being in the sun. This is not to say that we should get burned, though. Being fair-skinned, I’d have to work up to a tan in 30 minute increments before I could spend more time out without sunscreen. If you’re going to be in very very strong sun, you should wear sunscreen if you’re starting to burn.

The white lab coat people suggest that we spend 15-20 minutes in the very strong sun every day (with zero sunscreen and at least 40% of the body exposed). This isn’t always possible, because it gets cold in the winter. That’s why instead of spending the time outside, you can take vitamin D3 gelcaps to make up for it. You probably shouldn’t exceed 3000 Iu (international units) a day if you’re getting solar-powered vitamin D, but the jury is still out on exact dosages. Also, it takes your body about 48 hrs to absorb all the vitamin D from your skin, so when you shower, don’t scrub the areas that were exposed to sun, or else you’ll wash all the vitamin D down the drain.

So that’s something to think about. People who get vitamin D are far less likely to develop cancer.

Take my own grandfather, for example. He was a smoker. When I say “smoker” I mean he was a cigarette with a person attached. He started smoking when he was about 8 or 9, and did so until his emphysema prevented him in his 80s, but even then he chewed tobacco and smoked a pipe. He also was a supervisor for Bell South, so he spent all day at work standing in the hot southern sun making sure that workmen put up phone lines correctly. He was unbelievably tan. Brown. If his skin were a trendy paint color it would be “toasted autumn.” For all that smoking, he never had cancer, or any other non-smoking related disease. Even when he was retired, he took long walks outside every day. And he didn’t wear sunscreen, let’s just say that.

So I agree with Rosie O’Donnell. For once.

So, you want to learn to dress. But you’re a smart guy, and you want to have the tools to make

So, you want to learn to dress. But you’re a smart guy, and you want to have the tools to make your own good clothing decisions, instead of being blindly pointed at the latest fad. Am I right?

Then you’re in the right place.

Let’s start with the fundamentals—what fashion is about. At the ultimate root of it, most fashion is about making you look like you are these four things: healthy, strong, thin, and tall. If not those things precisely, then you shoot for looking closer to them than you actually are. (Let me go right out and let you know I’m not writing from a place of privilege here, because I am neither tall nor thin.)

The first and most important one of these is health, and it’s one you can’t really fake. Unfortunately, it’s easy for it to go the other way, for otherwise healthy guys to have small problems that make them look less healthy. Skin problems.

How to Have Good Skin

Good skin comes from several different factors: lifestyle, history, genetics, nutrition, and grooming. Not everyone can have Takeshi Kaneshiro’s perfect complexion, but you can go a long way to improving yours in a few simple ways.

Maintenance

Wash your face at least once a day, when you bathe. Use some kind of gentle cleanser. You don’t need to invest in special devices or costly unguents; just get something labelled ‘facial’ and use your fingers or a soft washcloth.

Also wash your face after any strenuous activity that makes you sweaty or dirty. If you don’t have your cleanser at hand, or you’ve washed your face a couple times already, just use cool water. (Washing your face more than two or three times a day will dry out or irritate your skin.)

Moisturizer is also extremely important for the health and long-term well-being of your skin. Many guys, especially ones with oily or “problem” skin, think that moisturizer will make their skin break out. Bad moisturizer might, so don’t buy bad moisturizer. Look for oil-free moisturizer with sunscreen. It will probably be more expensive than the cleanser you picked up. That’s fine. (If you’re looking for something cheaper, get this aloe vera moisturizing cream from jason organics and mix it with a little sunscreen from wherever.)

With moisturizer, a little goes a long way. Put a small amount of moisturizer, maybe the size of a dime, onto the tip of one of your fingers. Using an upward motion, massage it into your skin from the jawline up– never press downward. (Elizabeth says: Pulling your skin downward speeds up the formation of wrinkles. Every women’s magazine I have ever read, and every cosmetologist I have ever spoken to, confirms this. No one ever tells men, because men aren’t supposed to care about wrinkles.) Be extremely gentle underneath your eyes, for the same reason. If the moisturizer gets absorbed before you make it up to your hairline (which might happen the first couple of times you moisturize), go for another dime-sized dollop. Your skin will thank you.

You can also help your skin out from under the surface by drinking lots of water. This helps your system flush out dirt, waste, and bacteria internally, which reduces breakouts and speeds up the healing of any that already exist. It also keeps you hydrated, which makes your skin look more even-toned and gently smooths out minor surface irregularities, scars, and so on.

Advanced option: try not to touch your face during the day. Don’t put your chin on your fist, don’t facepalm, don’t stroke your chin thoughtfully. When you do, you’re transferring the stuff on the part of your body which touches the most things to a part of your body which has extremely sensitive skin. It’s nigh-impossible to never touch your face, but it’s good to keep in mind what’s happening every time you put your head in your hands.

Troubleshooting

If your face is itchy, your skin feels too tight, or you have white flakes, then your skin is dry. Moisturize more often in the spots where the problem is the worst, and if you’re washing your face multiple times a day, cut down to just water except in the morning. Definitely use a washcloth to help dislodge and carry away those flakes of dead skin. (And have I mentioned drinking water is good for your skin? It helps with skin hydration too, believe it or not.)

If your face is shiny or greasy, you have oily skin. Use a non-alcohol based toner before you moisturize, and be sure your moisturizer is made for oily skin. Do not skimp on the moisturizer, or your skin will make more oil! Keep blotting paper in your pocket to soak up shine in the middle of the day.

If your face has dry skin in some places and oily skin in others, you have “combination” skin, which is the cosmetic way of saying “complicated”. Sorry, dude. Follow the instructions for dry skin on the dry patches, and use a non-alcohol based toner before you moisturize the oily areas.

Breakouts

Breakouts suck. Don’t squeeze the blemishes, for God’s sake, or your face will be covered with scars. Try not to touch them at all, and wash your face a little more often. If you have a big date coming up, sometimes you can draw a zit to the surface with a warm, wet washcloth– this will speed up the natural healing process, but it’s not a last-minute solution, because it will look worse before it gets better. If acne is a recurring problem for you, drinking a lot of water combined with medicated cleansers works wonders. But remember: nothing, no matter what it claims, can make all of your acne go away overnight. We’ll talk about concealing in a later post.

On Thursday we’ll talk about shaving.

I have a jar of original Crème de la Mer which was given to me as a gift earlier this year. I used to want it (I mean, who doesn’t?) for years because I was curious about this so-called “Miracle Broth” hype but then I found out that it’s just glorified vaseline with some (give or take) nice sounding ingredients. I don’t like the fact that the cream is expensive when it’s primarily mineral oil based. It does smell good actually. Anyway, I’ve decided to try out a new cream that I learned about from Splendora called “Force de Vie” by this organic skincare line, Luzern. It’s definitely more affordable per ounce ($130 USD for 1oz. jar of La Mer vs. $125 for 1.7 oz of Luzern) and it has no mineral oil byproducts! It has a yogurt consistency, has a cooling sensation when applied, smells of citrus and it doesn’t feel sticky! Here’s to hoping that it’s a better cream! I’m not hoping for magically erased lines, I’m just using it to counteract Tazorac’s nasty side effects!

You have to hand it to blinc inc. This maverick makeup and skincare company is dedicated to innovation, and continues to come out with really great products. It’s the 10th anniversary of their landmark product, blinc mascara — once know as Kiss Me — which was the first mascara to use the technology to create tubes around the eyelashes instead of brushing on traditional mascara. The tubes stay in place, no matter whether you rub your eyes, swim in it, sleep in it. It takes warm water and friction to slide the tubes off your eyelashes.

No more racoon eyes with blinc mascara

Since then, blinc has introduced an eyeliner with the same qualities and technology, a conditioning lash primer, a heated eyelash curler, microdermabrasion sticks that are the best thing I’ve used since I heard the word “exfoliation”, and two new products: a 3-in-1 eyebrow product called “Fountain of Youthful Color™ Eyebrow Mousse” invented to give enhancing, water-resistant and moisturizing color to your brows with anti-aging benefits for the underlying skin, replacing the need to use powders, pencils and sealants. The other product is blinc fountain of youthful color™ eye shadow phase one, an eye shadow base invented to keep your shadow on as long as you want, while providing your skin with anti-aging benefits at the same time. Once applied, blinc eye shadow phase one conceals and fills existing fine lines, providing a smooth lid for ease of powder shadow application.

I love this company, I admire their credo, and I think that if you wear makeup, you ought to give the stuff a try. Great packaging (important to us creative types), delivers what it promises, and very , very cool website.

Below is the summary of ageLOC and the associated science that supports it . Also, here is a NEW short video on the new ageLOC products… http://bit.ly/2OgW3O

What is ageLOC?

ageLOC slows aging and even reverses signs of aging by attacking the sources of aging

How does ageLOC do this?

By identifying age-related youth gene clusters and then supporting the functionality of the “youth gene clusters” that preserve youth.

Where are these Youth Gene clusters found?

There are several Youth Gene Clusters and they are all located in the human genome.

Why are these Youth Gene clusters so important?

They control the aging process.

How did you find these YGCs responsible for aging?

Decades of study on biological aging, combined with the sequencing of the human genome in 2003 and the advent of modern computer technologies enables the identification of groups of genes that we call “Youth Gene Clusters.” The key insight originated from 30 years of research on caloric restriction, the only method validated by science to preserve youth. Such research has been the focus of our partners, LifeGen Technologies. Caloric restriction revealed that humans live longer and tissues work better when caloric intake is restricted. In subsequent caloric restriction studies, the molecular mechanism is then shown to be related to a profound effect on certain genes.

Are there patents covering these key insights?

Yes, one of the major patents is: US Patent 7,041,449 entitled “Methods of screening for compounds that inhibit expression of biomarker sequences differentially expressed with age in mice, Prolla et al.”. Several provisional patents have also been filed at the US Patent Office.

Why are they called Youth Gene Clusters?

Aging is never caused by a single gene. YGCs consist of multiple genes, the activity of which is either reduced or increased as we age.

With this key insight, how do you then affect YGCs to produce an anti-aging effect?

By resetting YGCs to their youthful state with ageLOC ingredients that are carefully blended to give an optimal effect.

Do you have any published data substantiating ageLOC science?

The following papers described the foundational science behind ageLOC:

Human Genome:

Nature 2001; 409

How are ageLOC products different from the competition?

Lancome Genefique does not offer a complete regimen of skin care products addressing genes, we do.

Lancome Genefique analyzed 4,400 genes for activity, Nu Skin analyzed over 20,000 genes.

Lancome Genefique analyzed 1,300 proteins, Nu Skin analyzed over 15,000 proteins.

Lancome Genefique is linking their product to a few genes, ageLOC addresses hundreds of genes related to YGCs.

Lancome Genefique has single gene boosting activity, whereas ageLOC dual gene boosting activity.

Dr. Dima can you expand a bit on the difference between “clinical vs. cosmetic” when it comes to your products?

Dear Ruthann:

What an insightful question! It really shows me how Megheads and consumers in general are increasingly “tuned in” to where they choose to spend their hard earned money. It has a fairly complex answer but I will do my best to clarify.

Actually the essence of your question can be traced back to the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act enacted by Congress in 1938. To summarize, this law was intended to distinguish between products that were meant for “adornment” purposes and those that were meant to prevent or treat disease. In the case of “cosmetics,” it was clear that such products would only be used for beautification and would not alter the structure or function of skin.

Unfortunately, ‘is it a drug or is it a cosmetic’ has become outdated with the increase in studies of the effect of topical ingredients on the skin. We now know that almost anything applied to skin, whether alpha hydroxy or avocado, peptides or petrolatum or even straight up water can effect skin physiology. To help clarify this conundrum, Dr. Albert Kligman came up with the term “cosmeceutical” in 1998 to help elucidate the vastness between the two extremes. But within the cosmeceutical category itself, there is again a large degree of discrepancy. Some cosmeceuticals lean more towards the cosmetics end and some veer more towards the drug end. In my opinion, it is within this category that the most confusion occurs for consumers (and doctors alike).

Clearly, we are beyond seeking “hope in a jar” and are becoming increasingly focused on finding products with biologically active ingredients that have been proven to effect a visible (and lasting) difference in our skin. In general, the more “biologically active” the ingredients, that is, the more they function to prevent and/or repair DNA damage, promote collagen synthesis and improve the appearance of skin, the more costly they are. In the absence of regulatory guidelines, the term clinical (or cosmeceutical/dermaceutical/ medical skincare etc.) is used to distinguish such products from those that cannot make claims of altering skin…or they do but then get sued for false advertising (ex: L’Oreal). Fundamentally, cosmetics camouflage whereas products containing active ingredients such as retinol, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, peptides, alpha lipoid acid, dimethylaminoethanol, and vitamin E to name a few can, in the right quantity and vehicle actually alter the structure of skin. A simplified example of this would be the use of optical properties to make topical creams and powders that reflect light in a certain way as to create the illusion of more youthful skin. Such products, depending on the manufacturer, probably have stringent quality control in terms of purity and batch size but are and will always be classified as cosmetic products.

So, in order to further distinguish the “cosmetic vs. clinical” conundrum, how efficacious (and stable) biologically active ingredients are on effecting skin changes and how they are formulated to achieve visible end results are two of the most important distinguishing characteristics. The focus should be on scientific, “clinical,” results that are reproducible (a change in skin texture or pigmentation), as well as preventive and long-lasting results. Remember that an ingredient may be potent with indisputable skin health benefits but such ingredients are often comprised of large molecular structures. A lot of research goes into maximizing the penetrability of such ingredients into the skin barrier where cellular change needs to occur without the irritating side effects. Moreover, a little known fact is that the active ingredients can become essentially inactive if formulated in an inappropriate vehicle.

A great example of this is Vitamin A, aka retinoids. Tretinoin is a well known biologically active, evidence-based, FDA regulated ingredient and something that I have to write a prescription for. Although it works, it is not well tolerated and many people find it extremely irritating and caustic. This side effect, however, is actually proof that it is working to promote collagen synthesis and stimulate DNA repair at a cellular level. Unfortunately, not many patients remain compliant with such a skin regimen. Moreover, there is scientific proof that the synergistic combination of first generation retinoids, while not labeled as “active” ingredients, and not FDA regulated, can be extremely effective when combined with other anti-aging, intracellular free-radical scavengers without all the side effects. How is this achieved? Suffice it to say that, in general, manufacturers of clinical grade products put the equivalent R&D into the products as would go into a pharmaceutical, prescription only product and, as you so eloquently stated in your question, “you get what you pay for!”

It’s so very confusing to patients/consumers as companies spend millions on the clever marketing of “cosmeceuticals.” They are sold in department stores by people in white lab coats with a “clinical” almost lab-like atmosphere with medicinal looking bottles and pharmaceutical sounding names. I mean even I get drawn in! At my office, my patients bring me bags of products (literally), some paying upwards of $500 for an ounce of nothing but “hope or the hopes of a facelift in a jar.” Simply put, it’s marketing madness but, as is usually the case, the proof is in the pudding. When you find the right product that works for you, you’ll know it, right Ruthann? So, if you’re spending $8 on an anti-aging cream or $12 on a mineral foundation and you think you’re getting a good deal…think again.

Best,

Winter is here, and I go to great lengths to find a good body cream that will keep me from turning into human sandpaper during this season. It happens that I do own such a miracle body cream. There’s just one teensy problem. I don’t believe they sell it anymore.

Sarah Michael’s Extra Thick Body Cream in Jasmine and Waterlily

This image is not very color accurate. It’s a lot more pleasant looking in real life.

Don’t be fooled by the summery picture on the cap; this is perfect for winter. It’s an extremely thick, lilac colored body butter. I don’t even like the smell of jasmine that much, but the scent is very light and clean. I think I can smell the lily a little bit, but it’s mostly just your standard light, relaxing floral scent. One 8 oz. tub lasts me forever and ever, and thankfully I bought a few (I think it was Bath and Body that carried this, but I can’t be sure).

I love body butters that are nice and thick; they feel a lot more substantial to me. The Body Shop’s body butters are also very moisturizing, but I find the texture isn’t thick enough for me.

Does anyone know of a good, thick body butter? My skin thanks you in advance!

Image : http://www.flickr.com The fact is that can happen to any type of skin condition, regardless

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The fact is that can happen to any type of skin condition, regardless of the pigment of the skin have. When it comes to African American skin care and others with darker skin color, however, there are a few problems, the care is much more widespread.

Here are five of the most common African American skin care are issues …

Acne

Acne is characterized a chronic disease caused by overproduction of oil from sebaceous glands, hair follicles, usually on the face, chestand re-inserted. Pimples, papules, pustules and comedones, (black heads and white heads) cysts and infected abscesses treated in acne. Acne affects most teenagers to some degree. However, the disease is not confined to any age group, adults in their 20s – also get in the 40s – acne. With regard to African American skin care, acne can cause permanent discoloration of the skin. Therapy is the same for all skin types, but it is very important to take advantage of current agentsto reduce that irritation of the skin.

Ingrown hairs (Razor Bumps)

Another African American skin care issue is Ingrown Hairs. Afro-Americans have curved hair shafts, and that's the beard hair as well as for other body hair. Often after a very close shave, the pointed hair may be red again in the skin and can penetrate the wall of the hair follicle, causing a reaction to bumps called razor burn. " If you are able to grow a beard is a viable optionSupport for those.

African American men should be different methods of hair removal if they try, with ingrown hairs, which suffer so-called razor burn. Shaving with a special kind of razor that does not permit a very close shave may help. Do not stretch the skin during shaving and not shaving every day. If ingrown hairs are, they raise with an alcohol-needle is not cleaned (tweeze or pluck) just before shaving. Can sometimes help with a rough washcloth before shavingto loosen hairs about to grow inward.

Hair removal chemicals to remove hair, but should only be used once per week. You need to be wiped off promptly according to package directions and wash your face twice with soap and water immediately to protect against irritation afterwards.

Permanent hair removal by electrolysis, an experienced operator can be implemented an effective solution and there is a new medical creams, the hair growth and can help slow. Be sure to consult your dermatologistabout treatment options.

Variations in skin color

African American skin has larger melanosomes (cells) to determine the skin color and the melanosomes contain the pigment melanin, found more than the white skin. Because the protective effect of melanin, African-Americans are better protected against skin cancer and premature wrinkling from sun exposure.

Post inflammatory hyper pigmentation is quite common in dark-skinned people, even after minor injuries. One areaof the skin may darken after an injury such as a cut or a scrape, or after certain skin disorders such as acne. To avoid or reduce post inflammatory hyper pigmentation, avoid picking, harsh scrubbing, and abrasive treatments. Darkened areas of skin may take many months or years to fade, although topical (surface) bleaching agents may help. Also chemical peels (using alpha and beta hydroxyl acids) and microdermabrasion can be helpful.”

Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a common African American Skin care condition where pigment cells are destroyed and irregular white patches appear on the skin. Many dermatologists believe that the cause of this common disease is an autoimmune process in the cells of the body attack the pigment producing cells.

The extent of color loss differs with each person, some people lose pigment over their entire body. Do some patients with vitiligo do not regain skin color, but some cases of vitiligo repigment. See your dermatologist as soon asis possible, the extent of the disease determine the appropriate treatment. .

Several skin care methods are used to treat vitiligo, but none have been perfected. Current medications, including corticosteroids and new non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are commonly used. In cases where vitiligo affects most of the body, it is sometimes best to destroy the remaining normal pigment. A dermatologist can determine which treatment is best based on the extent ofDisease.

Keloids

When the scar from a cut or wound extends and spreads beyond the size of the original wound, it is known as a keloid. Keloids may vary in size, shape and location. They occur more often in brown or black skin and that's a very common African American skin care issue.

Keloids are a common skin care issue occur on the earlobes, neck, chest or back, and usually after an injury or surgery. Occasionally they occur spontaneously, especially in the middle of the chestRange. Keloids often follow inflammation caused by acne on the face, caused chest and back.

Keloids may be painful, both physically and emotionally (from cosmetic perspective), but it is important to address keloids primarily as a medical, but as a cosmetic condition.

Depending on the location of the keloid skin care from cortisone injections, pressure may, silicone gel, surgery, laser treatment or radiotherapy. Unfortunately return keloids, and also tendto increase, especially after treatment with surgery.
