JOKER what a big name at the moment, i reckon he’s a very talented boy and i hope there’s big things waiting for him. these two slightly older tunes of his are classic examples of his liquid funk synths, pure purple as the man himself may say.

and if you’re a fan of joker’s sound TERROR DANJAH is your man. having just released a collection of his instrumentals, remixes and tracks on planet mu records called GREMLINZ,  he’s just beginning to get the recognition he deserves. he is considered one of the finest grime producers ever if not the best by the grime cognoscenti, originally part of the nasty crew and then aftershock, terror has released countless 12″s and remixes as well as several mixtapes. if you want to hear a precursor to joker, and the new bristol producers, here it is.

untold and the whole hemlock label have been really amazing me with untold’s own, ‘gonna work out fine’ EP making for cracking listening. however, it is fantastic mr JAMES BLAKE’s remix of  stop what you’re doing by untold which is the finest. one of the best tunes of the year in my opinion.

having recently visited the infamous SUBDUB in leeds for shackleton, distance, peverelist and scuba on saturday i’ve been listening to JOY ORBISON a lot, who seemed to be artist of choice for those boys in leeds. here’s hyph mngo as a taster but i emplore you to have a look around for some of his other releases, GOLD.

belgium is a place for dubstep. that was something obvious at this year’s DOUR festival where some belgians nearly shit their pants over joker, n-type and especially rusko. wow what a festival. but the man in focus is GANJA WHITE NIGHT. he’s been cracking out tune after tune that really hit the spot. a man to follow, a man to trust. gayfish is pretty purple growler, watch out.

now here to finish off is the real mixed bucket. machester local MRK 1 puts a brilliant spin on a big norrisman tune, PRIMARY 1 put together an old but super-varied mixtape, interwoven with kubrick samples and, from the vault, the kings of funk BROTHERS JOHNSON deliver probably one of the finest songs ever. bye.

Coming from a musical background – Google Barry Tomes and Norma Lewis (Momma and Poppa Bear) and you’ll see what I mean – I’ve always been pretty open minded in the music department. My iPod has the most random mix of music on it.

I’m quite in to drum ‘n’ bass and recently this has developed into a love of dubstep. It seems to be pretty popular at the moment, with Skream and Rusko making it on to Radio 1 playlist thanks to remixes of La Roux and Mr Hudson.

As part of Rewired’s work with Punch Records, I’m really excited about working on their latest tour, Dub to Dubstep, which kicks off later this week.

Mikey Dread

The six-date maverick tour is an exploration of the connection between dub, reggae and dubstep. Such a massive genre across the world, people don’t often understand the difference between these three types of music so Punch is working with Channel One Sound System and Vagabondz to bring this tour to life.

Who’s involved?
Celebrating their 30th Anniversary, Channel One will bring their custom-built soundsystem to each venue, with Mikey Dread as Selector and Ras Kayleb as MC. The tour will also feature four leading dub artists; The Uplifter, JazZstepPa, Kromestar, and Rob Smith aka RSD.

Who are they?
A fixture on the scene since 2003, The Uplifter is an established DJ, who brings his performances to life with animated art projections, live percussion and vocalists. He will be joined by JazZstepPa, one of the UK’s leading dubstep acts that have already attracted attention from BBC Radio 1. Another sought-after dubstep DJ, and BBC 1 Xtra and Rinse FM resident, Kromestar, will also feature in the line-up. The final act to take to the stage as part of the exciting tour is Rob Smith aka RSD, who has produced a number of songs including Massive Attack’s first single ‘Any Love’.

Got a great Jakwob remix of the Temper Trap track “Fader”. Temper Trap make great tracks for remixing, the vocals seem to lend themselves so well to anything, here they work perfectly some big wobbling basslines. And it all still sounds so chilled with just the under pinning of sub fequenceies.

Here is something from DZ called “My Moon, My Dub”. This is darker than the Jakwob remix, it got those haunting kind of vocals in the background with the deep bassline. This is some quite stripped back dubstep, its all about the vocal and bassline, using them together to great music.

Last we got the Toddla T track “Rebel” remixed by Skream, I’ve also heard it called “Come Out and Play”. I didn’t like this track when I first heard it, but after a few listens it has really grown on me. I thinks its the slowed down jungle sort of beat that takes a few listens to get used. I really like the song now, I love the chilled almost reggae vibe you get from it. Skream’s bassline through the track is so good and gives the track some real depth.

Oops…I forgot to post when I came across this killer Skream remix of La Roux’s In For The Kill a month back. This track made me crazy when I first heard it. I played it  nonstop on repeat day and night for at least 3 days. It is so much better than the original! I love what Skream did to the vocals too. This track sounds so sexy, dirty, bad ass, and makes me want to lose my shit. I’ve been playing it as the warm-up track in my dance class. Gets things started off right every time. Respect Skream!

I’m sick RL, so i figure bumming around SL and looking tragically hip would make me feel better, or at least distract me from the fact that i can’t breathe through my nose and i HATE mouth breathing! I’m so obsessed with mijn.t* right now, i found the store through another blog and popped in to check it out. There isnt much there yet, but what is, is incredibly adorable! I love this body suit for the simple fact that its made very well! The little bit of texture on the bodice as well as the lovely cap sleeve and turtleneck prim. I adore the look of an undershirt/corset on it as well. Plus the cut on the bottom makes my ass look SUPER DELICIOUS! And that is NEVER a bad thing! Did i mention this was their free color? So, Christmas is coming, its end of the month soon which means tier time *sighs* and money really is, too tight to mention – so what do you do ? Recycle – it is one of my favourite things to do with my inventory, turning old into new and bringing things bang up to date with your own lil’ twist – and this is exactly what i have done here. The skirt, was actually one of the first items i bought with linden dollars in SL way back in 2007 from Canimal! I’ve mixed it up with some not so older items and a few newer pieces to make it work well. The texture still rocks with this skirt after all this time, as does the sweet cutesy flexi movement of the skirt and petticoats.

In 2004 Needy Girl came out. The funky sound was completly new to me but yet so… so awesomely great. After that Chromeo has always had a special place in my heart.

The group (David Macklovitch and Patrick Gemayel) comes from Montreal, Canada and was formed 2002. Influnced by eighties disco and sententies funk they released the album She’s In Control in 2004. After great reviews and even videos on MTV it took them three years to create their next masterpiece, Fancy Footwork. This album was remixed by big names such as Etienne de Crezy, Laidback Luke and MSTRKRFT. Not to mention the king Philippe Zdar, the man behind the french artist Cassius, who made a great job mixing the album.

So now, 2009, Chromeo releases Night By Night with remixes by Skream and Siriusmo. Funny thing is that the original mix will work great on a dancefloor, Siriusmo remix you can drink a few beers to and Skream’s is a real laid back track for, say, relaxation…

I know i have a billion mini dresses, but when Urbanity released their Le Mini dress, i had to pick it up because #1..the name is so cute and #2..i dig the racer back style! I have a tendency to ramble, so i’ll just say, i dig this entire outfit and every piece in it!

So many cross-bred micro-genres and offshoots into any and every other type of music, dubstep is a genetically enhancing DNA strand of ideology that is sifting into everything in the UK at the moment. Here’s one of the summer’s more popular tunes, took so long to come out for release, but a 2009 anthem nonetheless…

Though there are all sorts of fun items for sale there, I’ve long considered Balderdash to be one of the best jewelry stores on the grid.  Saiyge Lotus makes unique and beautiful pieces of wearable art and it’s obvious she puts a little bit of herself into each creation.  Her latest set is called Strange As Angels and it is really quite lovely.  Saiyge was kind enough to gift me with this necklace and earring set in all of its colors, and I knew that I had to put some outfits together to showcase the versatility of this wonderful design.  For the first look, I decided to channel my business partner and go purple but with my own urban flare, of course.

This look started with the purple version of Strange As Angels. 

The Robin Artist Jeans in nightsky by Leezu were next.  I adore these!  Thankfully, shredded jeans are back in style and this set by Leezu has the perfect amount of “shreds”.  The term “Artist Jeans” certainly fits this pair, with the graffiti and star and heart patterns on the legs.  I thought the heart on the jeans tied in nicely with the necklace from Balderdash.  You can wear these jeans plain if you prefer, but really where is the fun in that?

For the top, I put on the Spray Paint Kitty t-shirt from Urban Dare.  It comes with several options for layering, including a thermal you can wear underneath and you can get it individually, or as a completely outfit with shorts and socks.   Speaking of Urban Dare, they have some wonderful high rise penthouse apartments for rent.  If you’re looking for a relatively inexpensive city type pad, you should check them out.  We can be neighbors!  These photos were shot at the Bansai Noodle Shop on Urban Dare.  Even if you don’t need an apartment, this is a fantastic SIM with lots of fun photo ops for you to check out.

I wanted a jacket with this look, and after some searching, I remembered the Denim Washed Demi Jacket from Moonshine.  Shelly Toonie sent this over in a “Bloggy Bag” a few weeks ago, and I’d not gotten around to unpacking it yet.  I’m glad I waited because it was perfect for this look.  I really love the front tie on this and the design on the back.  It does come in a plain version as well.  The back of Strange As Angels is just as lovely in the front with these two delicate hearts hanging down the back.  That is  such a lovely artistic touch and it gives this piece a touch of whimsy as well.

The boots are from Shiny Things; Ving Boots in Black.  These are my go to boots for any urban look and probably in my top ten favorite items on SL list.  You really can’t go wrong with them.  For hair, I knew immediately that I wanted Sneaky by Magika.  I’m wearing it in an older purple that I don’t believe is available any longer.  However, they do have a new purple that is just lovely…unfortunately, I did not have it at the time I shot these photos.  The headband is scripted for color change, which I love.  Another thing I love about this hair is the way it sort of floats around your face as you move.  Gorgeously done.  The eyes and skin are from ::Exodi:: and the piercings are from [skream!].

In order to show the versatility of Strange As Angels by Balderdash, I decided to go ultra feminine girly with the second look.  I paired the Strange As Angels set in Ocean with the Alison Tunic Dress by Malt.

I’m wearing Blue Sky here but it comes in several different colors for you to choose from.  I actually first saw this dress on a client and couldn’t believe how lovely it was.  I think this may be the first time I’ve ever worn a flower pattern like this, but the dress is just so well made I couldn’t not have it.  It’s very flirty and feminine and a bit retro.  I paired it with the Ju hair by Magika.  This gorgeous updo is fun and flirty.  I love the back; it looks like you have little rosettes on the back of your head.  I’m not sure you can get more feminine than this.

The skin is Sienna (Cachet) in Tinsel from ::Exodi::  This is the newest line from ::Exodi:: and it’s simply stunning.  It doesn’t quite work for my av as well as Shiloh, but I love the skin so much I’m willing to make a shape just for it.  I’ve not quite gotten it looking like me yet, but I will. 

Oh, and the shoes are from Maitryea Gold; Esprit in Black.  Love, Love, LOVE! 

So here you have two very different looks with the same set of jewelry.  Strange As Angels is a fantastic edition to the Balderdash collection.  If you’ve not been there, I urge you to stop reading and GO!  Okay, well maybe finish reading first, but seriously do check it out.  Her designs are incredibly well done, unique, and versatile.  What more could you ask for?

Yes that is the title given to my piece on UK dubstep for the “British Sessions Part I” issue of Covers Magazine. I am not 100% happy with the edits made (a lot of coke in the Thames WTF?), but it is meant to be an intro piece for people who have never heard of dubstep before.

I want to take this time… to profess my love for 50Ls Friday! I personally hate hunts! The lag and half the time, the stuff is filled with, well.. things I don’t ever need! Plus at times with 100 stores or more, I lose my need to do the hunt after maybe.. store 5! With 50Ls Friday, most designers make something new and special for it, and i honestly don’t mind paying for anything if i love it! I’ve gotten to ‘discover’ a few stores through the program and have become a frequent shopper at them on regular days! Weekend Fever is also fantastic, a theme per week and designers taking that as a challenge, this past weekend it was Brown and some of the stuff i got was way too cute!

I’m showing off some of my 50Ls Friday goodies, I already own a few Pomski boots, but this Coffee Candy color is wayyyy too sweet to pass up! I’m feeling all sorts of Pretty n Bundled up, and got hit on by a girl while running around grabbing SLurls for this post. ROFL

La Roux: bringing ginger kids back into style

One of the bands I’ve followed quite a bit this year is La Roux. You’ve probably heard a lot about lead singer Elly Jackson’s signature copper quiff and how she’s all young and cool and the future of electropop music, but more so than their actual output it’s the La Roux remixes and mash-ups in particular that have captured my interest.

Diplo is a remix master. He fucked with my favourite TV on the Radio song (which, in turn, became one of my favourite remixes) and reworked everything from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs to dead prez to Britney Spears. If I wasn’t married to the idea of this post title, I’d rename it “Diplo invented the remix.” Anyway, earlier this year he was the first DJ on my radar to really start bigging up La Roux with this New Wave-y, well-paced remix of Quicksand, the band’s first single, created by his Mad Decent imprint.

Dubstep somehow blew THE EFF UP this year. Producer/DJ Skream (this frighteningly young British dude, who has also reworked the Klaxons and DJ Mujava) is really riding for the viability of the remix as a way to promote lesser known artists, obscure club one-offs and remixers themslves to a broader audience. His manipulation of “In For the Kill” helped both this song, the band and him grab the spotlight. I’m a mellow chick and so my personal favourite take on La Roux comes from Nacey in the form of the winsome “Bulletproof”. The original album track is loud, jarring and gets gunning from the beginning. Nacey takes this intensity and, without losing it, morphs the song into an equally impassioned, pensive piano jam.
