(An oto/ophthalmoscope. from www.adion.ro)

In which Josh writes about a $600+ piece of equipment, lectures, faces on cadavers, the MSLG HEAL project and playing with an oto/opthalmoscope in Doctoring Skills.

Two new toys this week. The first is an oto/opthalmoscope, which we will discuss at the end of this entry. The second we received in the gross lab, one for each table. It costs over $600, they warned us, so take good care of it. An expensive piece of clinical equipment?

No. It’s a skull.

Dead serious. (Pun not intended.) It’s intended for us to review bony structures on. Who knew skulls were expensive?

***

There were fewer lectures this week than I remembered. Dr. Hendley finished up her lectures on autonomics, particularly sympathetic and parasympathetic reflexes and receptors.

Then Dr. Low, one of my favorite lecturers at UVM, arrived to talk with us about growth hormone, the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. I’ve heard one student complain he doesn’t teach anything. That’s not true. What he teaches are not numerous bits of material, but the overarching picture about the material. This means his questions are application-oriented instead of detail-oriented.

***

It’s been a while since I discussed the cadavers. By this point, we have begun studying the face, particularly the muscles and the bones. Before, the faces were covered with cloth, but now they have to be uncovered so we can do what we need to do.

This can be a little tough for some people. I’ve been ok with everything, but last week, one of our tablemates asked to be excused since she couldn’t stand the particular dissection. We understood.

***

This week in MSLG, each group got paired up with social worker students to work on our HEAL project. We now know we’ll be putting on a health program of some sort for an international community here in Burlington.

My group will be doing a Family Planning program for the Bhutanese in Burlington in February. This gives us some time to research them and meet with a Bhutanese representative from the community to learn what’d work best for them.

***

One nice thing about Doctoring Skills is that they provide the tools we need to practice with. Case in point: The oto/opthalmoscope costs around $400, so most of us just use the ones provided in the exam rooms we go to for Doctoring Skills.

We were taught how to examine the ears, nose, eyes and mouth using the scope. And a tongue depressor. It’s hard to see the arteries or the discs in the eye the first day you use it, but I was able to see an artery.

Tidbit: If you’re using a tongue depressor on someone, wash it with water first before placing it on the person’s tongue. Not because of germs. It makes it easier for the patient to not gag when you place it on the tongue. (Incidentally, I have NEVER seen a doctor or any other medical professional do this. Shame shame shame.)

Okay, my plan is to retrospectively cover the last year of proper photography in a post a bit later

Okay, my plan is to retrospectively cover the last year of proper photography in a post a bit later on> But to have a bit of a practice at this blogging lark I will write-up this post which is all about the photographs I took before I started getting all serious like……

My first Digital SLR was a Canon 300D, which I got with the kit lens and another 55-200 lens, both were a bit pants when I looked back on them but the camera itself was great, fitted my hand well, easy to use and cheap as chips. Just a bit of a shame it was silver. The first photos I took with it were on a trip to Scotland, I was going walking in the hills around Glencoe…..It belted it down with rain the whole week…..But I still took my camera out, it didn’t seem to mind a bit of water.

On my way to the first soggy mountain I was going to climb I spotted some highland cattle in a field, I couldn’t really go home without a shot of a shaggy bovine.

They were the perfect models, standing still and allowing me to take a whole range of shots the rain even provided a nice bit of texture to the background.

But I wasn’t just interested in shooting the local wildlife, I wanted to seek out a few quirky images. I managed to find this bright red phone box in the middle of nowhere. I don’t think I achieved quirky, I achieved holiday snapshot! I need to go back up there with my speedlights (didn’t have any at the time) and a dramatic sky and maybe a model or two and try again.

Over the next few years I shot a load of random stuff, occasionally thinking about the end result…

…but usually not…I just wafted a torch around a deer skull late at night, it seemed to make sense at the time….

Then I took a picture of some sand.

I should probably explain. It was the first time I pictured something in my head then went out and got exactly what I wanted. I know it’s not an astonishing work of art but the simple process of seeing a picture in my head and then making the picture with my camera (and a splodge of Photoshop) was really quite rewarding.

The next step in my journey to actually taking photography seriously was the first time I photographed people properly, again previous attempts had been simple snapshots without much consideration as to the final result. The following shot of Bob, my mum’s partner is quite a nice shot I think, but purely accidental, it worked as he didn’t realise he was having his photo taken.

‘

I was out on a film shoot and got the chance to shoot some actors, people who are used to performing, that was great fun, actually working with people who took direction and understood the process of making an image. So I ended up with a set of what I think are really nice expressive photographs that capture a little something about the person (or at least the person they were pretending to be for the film).

It was after this that I decided to change my camera for something with a few more features, I chose to go with the Canon 40d, I got a really good deal on a preorder and I got the 17-55 IS lens to go with it, constant f2.8 aperture which would prove useful for a lot of the photography that I was about to do. I started working as a camera assistant on a series of documentaries, and I took my camera along, over the course of two series of crime docs I snapped away between takes, sometimes grabbing a nice portrait, other times grabbing a snapshot of behind the scenes life.

I started to learn to take advantage of natural light, available light and the lights that had been set up for the actual TV shoot. Lots of spot metering and handholding a camera at very low shutter speeds. Oh and working really quickly, I was taking photos at the same time as I was supposed to be setting up lights, camera and tracking for the next scene! Some of the shots have been used for publicity for the programmes which is nice.

Going from this…

To this, across two series…

Okay half of the docs were done during the period where I was taking photography seriously, but one more shoot happened before the events that I will write about in my next post. I work at a uni, we have a TV studio that I work in and an automotive degree that has links with racing teams. One of these racing teams had a new car ready for the GT series, it was getting prepped for its first race at Silverstone. The race team had organised a photo shoot for some promotional images of the car, I had been invited along to have a look as I used to work in the car industry, and who wouldn’t want to see a race specced Aston Martin. It turned out that the guy who turned up to do the promotional images was an art director and he was expecting there to be a photographer on site. I don’t think I was asked there just to ogle an Aston.

Anyway I got my camera out and we started to shoot, I ws slightly nervous as this was a proper commercial job dropped in my lap at 5 minutes notice working with an art director who had specific methods and an idea of the final output. The following week I went to Silverstone and grabbed a few shots of the car tearing around the circuit, by ‘eck it was noisy, but it did give me chance to play with my 70-200 f4 L that I had recently got.

So that is all about my photography before I took it seriously (okay some of it I did take seriously). But my next post is about the real turning point and the work I have done since then to try and improve the photographs that I make.

These intricate and delicate structures are vertebrae from a fish. They seem both complex and beaut

These intricate and delicate structures are vertebrae from a fish. They seem both complex and beautiful. They are an example of the interesting and amazing things you can find washed up on strandlines if you only take a closer look. These backbones were still articulated and joined to the head (illustrated in the picture below). I am not certain, yet, what type of fish this is but I am going to find out when I can access the right literature; both the bones and the scales can provide clues for identification.

It would have been very easy to overlook these fishy remains on the beach. An entire mono-filament nylon fishing net, complete with the catch of fish, was washed ashore and mostly buried in the sand. Only a small portion of the net was visible above the surface. On close inspection, dead fish heads and bones were entangled in the mesh and protruding from the sand – as you can see in the photographs below. Some of the skin and scales remained but the meat had been removed. In the sand around the nets and bones are small holes where small seashore creatures, like the sandhopper amphipods, have burrowed into the sediments and feasted on the fish.

On a recent trip to Mexico for Day of the Dead, I was amazed at the amount of skulls I saw all over the city.

Seeing as I LOVE skulls, I decided to start a project while I was there and photograph every skull I saw for an entire week. It was a pretty exhausting to keep up with as you will see.

The final result was 420 photos of skulls. They were made of sugar, etched in stone, found in graves, made by kids, worn on faces, and painted on walls – and they were all in Mexico City.

Like the moon, and animals, the skull has been a focus of artistic meditation since as long as our kind has had the luxury of taking a break from hunting and gathering. This work feels both ancient and completely contemporary. Jim Skull website has what seems like an endless variety of a meditative jute maze meandering through human history.

And then there is this…the opposite and equal reaction. I, of course, really respond to the materials, both low on the craft totem pole, almost to the scout project level, which is why I find it captivating.

I forgot to post these earlier, but here are a few photos of our Halloween costumes this year.

Kathy and I went as Dia de los Muertos skeletons. I painted my noggin like a plain white skull, while Kathy got really detailed and decorated her face with intricate patterns and designs. Pretty awesome.
