Carol Elliott – The People I Meet

Fangen wir mit der ältesten CD – in jeder Hinsicht – im Reigen an: Carol Elliotts The People I Meet ist ein Folk-Album mit Countrystimme, eine Stimme, die hier und da auch an unsere Konzertkritik von letzter Woche, Ann Vriend erinnert. Wer früher Mary Black gehört, hier und da mal Joan Baez bei den Eltern geklaut hat oder auch gerne mal eine Art Countryscheibe zum Autofahren braucht, ist mit Carol Elliott gut bedient. Frau mit Gitarre und melancholischen Texten, aufgenommen in Nashville. Leider mit lieblos gruselig gestaltetem Cover (das gehört bei Taxim aber wohl zum guten Ton). The People I Meet stammt aus dem Jahr 1996 und so sieht es auch aus. Ob sich bei der Produktion von Folk bis heute dramatisch etwas geändert hat, entzieht sich unserer Kenntnis, vielleicht sind aktuell wieder andere Raumklänge schick. Diese Produktion ist jedenfalls solide und hat keine negativen Auswirkungen auf die künstlerische Leistung. Schöne zweistimmige Passagen bekommt man ebenfalls geboten wie z.B. bei »Angels«. Thorstens Favoriten auf dem Album sind neben dem Titeltrack auch »V.T. & Me« und »What about us«. Jule hingegen steht mehr auf »Angels« oder »Roller Coaster Ride« – den Thorsten nach kurzer Überlegung doch auch dann besser findet  als den Titeltrack… Und überhaupt das ganze Album »gar net schlecht«.

Ein empfehlenswertes Folk-Album – und genau dazu sollte man entweder in entsprechender Stimmung sein oder Folkfan. Sonst findet man es vermutlich langweilig und die Stimme gewöhnungsbedürftig.

Carol Elliott – The People I Meet

Noch ein paar soft und hard facts: Optisch erinnert Frau Elliott ein wenig an die mögliche Mutter von Juliette Lewis. Außer diesem einen Album gibt es leider keine anderen Veröffentlichungen, derzeit schreibt sie Kurzgeschichten, betätigt sich als Malerin und ist hier und da auch noch auf der Bühne zu sehen, allerdings nur in USA. Kaum zu glauben, aber es gibt sogar eine deutsche Fansite mit ein paar alten Fotos und Bildern von ihrem (einzigen?) Auftritt in Deutschland bei Jürgen v. d. Lippe. Der Bass auf diesem Album stammt vom Alisson Krauss-Bruder Viktor, Produzent Steve Gibson war entweder Country- oder Pornostar, genaues ließ sich von uns via Google oder Wikipedia nicht recherchieren.

Grabbelkisten-Fazit: Carol Elliott kann uns die Winterabende vor dem Kamin oder der Etagenheizung versüßen, am Besten mit einer Kanne Tee, Kerzenlicht und leckeren Plätzchen *hoho*. Einige billige und vor allem gebrauchte CDs sind z.B. bei einem großen Frauenkriegerversender zu erwerben.

Skye – Mind how you go

Just zum gestrigen Trefftag hat Skye ihr neues Album Keeping Secrets veröffentlicht (hat der Thorsten ja gut hinbekommen) – komplett in Eigenregie wie es scheint, denn an einem Label ist sie laut ihrer MySpace-Seite nicht interessiert. Wir wollen uns aber dem bereits 2 Jahre alten Mind how you go widmen, dem ersten Soloalbum von Skye Edwards. So, und jetzt kurz in euch gehen, genaauu, das ist die ehemalige Sängerin von Morcheeba. Damit hat sie bei Jule schonmal einen kleinen Bonus für die Erst-Hörung. Denn Morcheeba haben unbestritten mit ihr ein paar groovende und eingängige Veröffentlichungen auf den Markt gebracht. Das Album beginnt mit einem Mädchentrack – denn die gucken schließlich Grey’s Anatomy (wieder so eine Entdeckung aus dieser Serie, gute Auswahl und Arbeit, Mister oder Miss Music-Supervisor). »Love Show« bleibt auch der Titel, der am meisten überzeugt auf Mind how you go. Das Album hört sich im weiteren Verlauf leider stark nach Bandproduktion und nicht nach Solokünstler an. Recht präsenter Bass und oft zurückgestellte Stimme. Was bei dem (hier) fragilen Sound von Skye Edwards leider kontraproduktiv ist. Die Songs klingen teilweise so, also wolle man auf jeden Fall nicht die Morcheeba-Fans vergraulen (z.B. bei »Solitary«), aber trotzdem etwas Eigenständiges erschaffen. Gelingt das?

Skye Edwards – Mind how you go

Ruhig, elektronisch-akustisch, ein Album für den frühen Morgennebel, aber nicht zum Wachwerden, sondern zum finalen Chillen bzw. Absacken bei Sonnenaufgang. Es geht längst nicht so ab wie bei frühen Morcheeba-Alben, sondern es plätschert alles sehr smoooooooth vor sich hin. Schade auf jeden Fall, dass die Stimme nicht ausreichend zur Geltung kommt, Bonus (siehe oben) also leider durch den Produzenten (Patrick Leonard, der wird nachher nochmal wichtig) verspielt. Wir hatten das Organ von Frau Edwards bei Morcheeba etwas präsenter in Erinnerung (wahrscheinlich lag es an den Unmengen Lagavulin, die laut CD-Booklet von Leonard angekarrt wurden, dass es dermaßen entspannt klingt). Mind how you go stellt sich ein wenig als »Do you mind how« (oder so ähnlich) heraus. Das Album rauscht durch die Ohren, tut nicht wirklich weh und zurück bleibt wenig. Aber wer schon bei Sade Durchhaltevermögen bewiesen hat, wird Skye Edwards sicherlich bis Minute 42 treu bleiben. Ähnliches könnte auch für das neue Album gelten, das allerdings deutlich elektronischer daherkommt – urteilt man nach den kurzen Teasern auf der MySpace-Seite. Empfehlungen zur richtigen Hör-Vorbereitung der Alben geben wir hier aus rechtlichen Gründen nicht, aber wer nicht drauf kommt, sollte mal einen Blick auf den letzten Titel des hier vorgestellten Albums werfen.

Grabbelkisten-Fazit: Auf keinen Fall während einer langen Autobahnfahrt hören, sondern erst wenn ihr wieder zuhause seid und nichts mehr vorhabt. Mind how you go ist dank der schönen Stimme auch für Patienten mit Schlafstörungen bestens geeignet. Thorstens persönliches Fazit: »Jetzt hab ich halt einen weiteren Regal-Zentimeter im CD-Archiv dauerhaft aufgefüllt.« Immerhin ist die CD hübsch.

Auch hier haben wir es mit einer fragilen Stimme zu tun: Sophie Zelmani ist sowas wie die schwedische Leonore Cohen (und hat unglaublich geniale Promofotos wie dieses hier, das musste Jule einfach so groß abbilden). Durchgängig ruhige Songs, aber eben mit deutlich mehr Spannung und Dynamik als bei Skye Edwards. Wie sagt Thorsten so schön: »Der Sound atmet.«, will sagen, Spielfreude und Seele sind da wo sie hingehören: auf das Album. Die Songs haben Tiefe und sind teilweise schwere Emotionsbrocken, Zelmani ist mit jeder Faser ihres Körpers dabei (Zelle kann man ja nicht mehr sagen). Auch die Produktion des Albums passt perfekt in seiner Zerbrechlichkeit, da hat ihr langjähriger Produzentenpartner Lars Halapi – selbst Country- und Jazzmusiker und Gitarrist auf Memory Loves You – einfach den Bogen raus. So fragil und nah die Songs selbst sind, so fern und unnahbar bleibt Sophie Zelmani, wenn man einen Blick in ihre Biografie und z.B. die aktuell abgesagten Tourdaten wirft. Sie gehört eher zu den scheuen Stars, die am liebsten ihre Songs und Ideen im Studio verwirklicht, aber kein großes Interesse an Öffentlichkeit hat. Das soll ihr gegönnt sein, wenn sie weiterhin so melancholisch-schönen Akustik-Pop veröffentlicht.

Sophie Zelmani – Memory loves You

Ihre Heimat Schweden liebt sie, dort stieg ihr letztes Album The Ocean and Me direkt auf Platz 1 ein. Hier und da sind Ähnlichkeiten zu Jewel in ihren besten Zeiten festzustellen (abgesehen von der Stimme). Denn zum Pop gesellen sich in einigen Songs auch ein wenig Country oder Folk. Memory Loves You stammt aus dem Jahr 2007, davor hat sie bereits sechs Alben veröffentlicht, die allerdings völlig an uns vorbeigegangen sind. Unser Favorit: »Love on my Mind«.

Grabbelkisten-Fazit: Schöne Songs für vernebelte Herbsttage oder wahlweise windige Tage in der Prärie oder der frostigen Blockhütte.

Ilse DeLange – The Great Escape

Was unsere Begeisterungsfähigkeit angeht, müssen wir einerseits zugeben, dass Jule wohl am heutigen Abend eher der Popmusik zugeneigt ist und ihr Frau DeLange bei unserem Extrem-Listening (vier Alben in 2 Stunden) spontan am besten gefallen hat. Andererseits widmet Thorsten der Optik des letzten Albums deutlich mehr Aufmerksamkeit (Männer!) und sagt, dass das nur an der Farbe des Inlays liegt (grün – ja, schon klar…). Der Rest, also die Akustik, langweilt ihn eher. Abgesehen von der grünen Farbe erinnert das Styling ein wenig an die 70er (und das hat jetzt nicht Thorsten gesagt), sehr lichtdurchflutet (mehr Weichzeichner gibt’s nur bei Bilitis). Optisch hat sie entfernte Ähnlichkeit mit Avril Lavigne oder Nicole Kidman. Leider passt Frau DeLange die Jacke vom Shootingkleiderständer nicht. Aber die hatte sie bei den Aufnahmen wohl nicht an. Zumindest singt sie nicht eingequetscht, sondern mit recht klarer Stimme, hier und da mit gewöhnungsbedürftigem Vibrato (wer sich noch an die Songs der Kelly Family erinnert, weiß was wir meinen).

Ilse DeLange – The Great Escape

Produzent Patrick Leonard – jaa, da isser wieder – hat den Lagavulin offensichtlich im Schrank stehen lassen, denn die Platte klingt deutlich frischer als der Solo-Erstling von Kollegin Edwards. DeLange klingt ein wenig wie ihre Landsmännin (oder wie sagt man da jetzt? Landsfrau? Landsmannseuse?) Anouk, nach einer Prise The Coors und deutlich nach Sheryl Crow, und dann kann man hier nach Wahl noch ein paar Popdamen eintragen. Denn die sauber produzierten Popsongs hätten auch von anderen Künstlern veröffentlicht werden können. So eine echte Handschrift ist nicht zu erkennen, es fehlt an Eigenständigkeit. Was nicht die Qualität schmälern soll; handwerklich ist das alles recht gut. Gesang und Arrangement kuscheln sich schön zusammen, ab und an gibt es auch Überraschungen. Aber der echte Knalleffekt bleibt aus. Vielleicht ist das ja bei ihrem aktuellen Album Incredible anders – das kann man bei obig erwähntem CD-Versender für sage und schreibe 70,- Euro als Import erwerben. Irre… Ist im Onlinestore von Ilse DeLange deutlich günstiger…

Grabbelkisten-Fazit: Fast 60 Minuten bietet The Great Escape – schöne Popmusik, die hier und da vielleicht etwas druckvoller und eigenständiger daherkommen könnte. Für Anouk-Fans sicherlich eine hübsche hollän- – äh ups – niederländische Alternative. Thorsten gefällt nach wie vor das Cover noch am Besten an der CD. Also vielleicht vorher mal kurz reinhören

Agencja Go Ahead serdecznie zaprasza na trasę koncertową  “The Keeping Secrets Tour” Skye Edwards, wokalistki formacji Morcheeba. Charyzmatyczna artystka pojawi się  w Polsce na trzech koncertach: 10 listopada w poznańskim Eskulapie, 11 listopada w warszawskiej Stodole oraz 12 listopada w krakowskiej Rotundzie.

Występy będą promowały nowy krążek Skye, który ukaże się jesienią. Będzie to drugie wydawnictwo w solowej karierze Edwards. Jej pierwszy solowy album “Mind How You Go” ukazał się w 2006 roku, był promowany niezwykle chwytliwymi singlami “Love Show”  oraz  “What’s Wrong With Me”. Prawdziwą popularność Skye Edwards zdobyła oczywiście jako głos zespołu Morcheeba, niezwykle istotnej  grupy  z kręgu nowych brzmień, jednego z najważniejszych zespołów lat 90-ych.  Morcheeba znana  jest z takich hitów jak “Rome Wasn’t Built In A Day”,”Part Of The Process”, “Otherwise” czy “Be Yourself” – piosenki z repertuaru Morcheeby nadal stanowią istotny element koncertów Skye pomimo jej rozstania z grupą w 2003 roku.

Five years ago, napping through some random alternative rock channel on cable tv, I stumbled upon the freaky and fabulous Noisettes. The vision they created was so strikingly on point I took the time out to rub the sleep out of my bleary eyes and wax out my ears to pay attention.  So, with the upcoming release of their new album, Wild Young Hearts at the end of this month, its nice to see that they haven’t faded off into oblivion, but instead continued to grow into a pretty groovy trio.  There is however something suspiciously familiar with the set up of the groovy trio, and its bugging me.

There is a consistent pattern which mainly applies to the UK music scene… and its a case of ‘the black chick with a good voice and a sense of style’.  Every decade or so, there arrives on the music scene one or two prolific groups from any genre which pulls in highly creative and talented musicians led by ‘the black chick with a good voice and a sense of style’.  This formula has proven pretty successful for the A&R man smart enough to recognize how fruitful the combination of nerdy, usually white boys and a bit of exotic is.

In some instances, groups like the Brand New Heavies went as far as to exclusively have black chicks as their lead singer (dont quote me on this but last time I counted they were on the fourth one), while the rest of the band float about in the back ground fingering instruments.  In extreme,  Black Box created a scandal in the nineties when they manufactured the ultimate exotic song bird by merging  the look and sound of two different women, Katrin and Martha Wash.

Funnily enough whenever a band has made a move to separate themselves from the CHICK, usually after the CHICK launches a solo career, they start sounding ordinary and somewhat stale.   Actually  in most cases neither works well without the other.

So maybe there is a natural attraction, an organic chemistry rather that the win win formula I suspect some fat cat music mogul concocts. It’s a formula that works for all the wrong reasons as well, for me its simply a necessary and beneficial exploitation of talent… after all ” we all live in a white man’s world” (quoting Mister) … Either way I am not going to delve too deeply into the subject, but before I shift my brain to focus  onto another trivial issue, take a closer look at Katrin from Black Box and Shingai from the Noisettes.  Yep, I’ll let you be the judge, and please let me know if I missed out other ‘black chicks with a good voice and a sense of style’ along the way.

In other Ane Brun news, the Norwegian singer-songwriter has released a cover of Alphaville’s ‘Big In Japan’, recorded for the soundtrack of Swedish TV documentary ‘Stor I Japan’. She says it’s on iTunes. We can’t find it. But it is on her website, as is her latest video collaboration with Magnus Renfors, this time for the sad, stunning ‘Don’t Leave’, the third single to be taken from the brilliant Changing Of The Seasons. The next Peaches album will unveil a new Italo disco-influenced direction for the raunchy Canadian, with production from Simian Mobile Disco, Chilly Gonzales and others we don’t know about yet. Voodoo-faced electro person Drums Of Death told The Lipster: “Peaches is singing, like, proper vocals. It’s beautiful, just great…this album should blow away her old fans and bring her 10 times more, I really hope it does that for her.”

The as-yet-untitled album is currently penciled in for March 2009.

Goldfrapp have announced plans to release a special edition of latest album Seventh Tree, with new album artwork, new photos and an expanded bonus DVD featuring videos for the three singles (‘A&E’, ‘Happiness’ and ‘Caravan Girl’) and various live performances. The package hits the shops on October 27th.

Nouvelle Vague mastermind Marc Collin has put together a new covers project, this time with the ambition “to change the way we feel about 1980s film soundtracks.” Hollywood, Mon Amour is its name – the project and the album, out October 6th – and it even features famous Tinseltown veteran turned rock star Juliette Lewis, who sings on a cover of Davie Bowie’s ‘This Is Not America’ from the 1985 film ‘The Falcon & The Snowman’.

Other famous names include ex-Morcheeba vocalist Skye Edwards (Blondie’s ‘Call Me’, Duran Duran’s ‘A View To A Kill’), Yael Naïm (Irene Cara’s ‘Flashdance…What A Feeling’), Cibelle (Kenny Loggins’ ‘Footloose’), with up-and-coming artists Katrine Ottosen, Nadeah, Dea Li, Nancy Danino and Leelou providing the rest of the nostalgia kicks. The premise that these songs now sound dated and unfashionable is a little shaky – the ‘80s have been back for how long now? – but otherwise we approve.

Rumours continue to swirl around about a new Nouvelle Vague album (tentatively titled NV3), but there’s been no official word about it yet. The band is on tour in November and December, with Nadeah and Marianne Elise providing the vocals. Katrine Ottosen releases her debut solo album, Fall Down, on November 10th under the name of CallmeKAT, following the lovely I’m In A Polaroid, Where Are You? EP, issued in June.

Famous for their festive offerings, if not their cheer, Low will release a new Christmas-themed single on November 3rd. ‘Santa’s Coming Over’ will be available on 7″ vinyl and as a download, backed by a cover of reggae track ‘The Coming Of Jah’. The band play three ‘holiday concerts’ in the UK a couple of weeks later, supported by the brilliant and all-too-rarely-in-this-country Ida:

Our advice: buy tickets! But don’t stand at the front, just in case there’s a repeat of the band’s set at End Of The Road festival last weekend which culminated in frontman Alan Sparhawk forcefully slinging his guitar into the crowd. Dangerous, yes, but thankfully no one was hurt.

More details have emerged about the new Pretenders album, Break Up The Concrete, out on October 6th. Turns out it’s actually Chrissie Hynde fronting a whole new line-up for the band, which is interesting and puts the whole ‘roots album’ premise into a clearer light.

Back in 2006, when the 3-D version of Tim Burton’s ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ hit selected screens across the country, a slightly extended version of the soundtrack was released with Fiona Apple, Marilyn Manson, Fall Out Boy, She Wants Revenge and Panic! At The Disco all turning in covers of some of the films much-loved musical numbers.

Well, if you liked that, there’s a treat in store for you as Walt Disney Records are releasing a new 20-track set of covers from the film at the end of the month. Nightmare Revisited ousts all but Manson from the 2006 release, adding in a truly baffling array of others. Fiona Apple has been supplanted by Amy Lee of Evanescence for ‘Sally’s Song’, which surely can’t be a good sign? Fortunately there are also inclusions from amazing Icelanders Amiina and Brazilian wonders Rodrigo y Gabriela.

KT Tunstall, The Go! Team and country singer Dawn Kinnard have all contributed new songs to a charity compilation featuring music inspired by BBC presenter Bruce Parry’s popular BBC nature documentary series, ‘Amazon’ and ‘Tribe’. Released as a 2CD set on October 6th (though available digitally now), sales of Amazon/Tribe: Songs For Survival will benefit Survival International, a human rights organisation for tribal peoples.

KT, who recently married her drummer Luke Bullen, talks about the project in this video:

Formed out of the ashes of Canadian electro-rock band Controller.Controller following the departure of singer Nirmala Basnayake, Lioness are a, er, Canadian electro-rock band featuring the impressive vocal talents of Vanessa Fischer, also of Canadian electro-rock band No Dynamics. Their debut EP, also called Lioness, is coming out on October 14th in advance of the band’s tour with You Say Party! We Say Die!, both in Canada only it seems. Sorry. We just mentioned it because we quite like the song they have up on their Myspace.

Another Canadian doing great stuff is the often overlooked Priya Thomas, who releases her fifth album of lo-fi experimental folk-rock on October 28th (in Canada). Priya Thomas Is Blood Heron was mostly written while on tour with Broken Social Scene’s Jason Collett and later recorded at her home with “broken 2 string ukeleles, pots and pans, wooden spoons, a warped parlour guitar and an ebow,” according to a blog post written earlier this year. Five of the 9 new songs are up on her Myspace, in case you’re wondering what kind of unearthly clamour that kind of junk might make.

Finally, we’ve had the LEGO Bible. We’ve had the LEGO Olympics. We’ve had LEGO album covers. Now, the toy company themselves have created LEGO versions of pop stars Amy Winehouse, Madonna and, er, Cliff Richard to celebrate their 30th birthday. More than 4 billion LEGO figures have been ferried along the production line and into shops over the last 3 decades, and the little men and women have become increasingly sophisticated. Given the near-skeletal frames of Amy and Madonna lately, they might not be best pleased by the rather chunky renderings pictured on the Daily Mail’s website today. Take a peek. Unfortunately they won’t be going on sale.

Skye Edwards, la tradicional cantante de Morcheeba, se lanzó como solista en el 2006 con el album Mind How You Go. Una de las mejores voces de la actualidad continúa intacta en esta nueva experiencia, mientras los Morcheeba no han podido sostener su bien ganada fama con su nueva cantante. Skye Edwards, desde Trigger Hippie, Let me see, Rome wasn’t built in a day, World looking in, entre otras, nos regala ahora, sola, todo su amor.

Takiego wydarzenia jeszcze w Lublinie nie było. Przez 9 dni Kozi Gród był prawdziwą stolicą europejskiej kultury – różnego rodzaju wystawy, warsztaty, panele dyskusyjne oraz przede wszystkim koncerty wpisały się w codzienny rytm Lublina. Pierwsza edycja festiwalu „Strefa Inne Brzmienia. Lublin-Lwów” przeszła do historii. Teraz czas na wnioski.

Po pierwsze organizacja. Billboardy, reklama w prasie, Internet itd. – tu bez zarzutu. Trzeba było naprawdę złej woli będąc na miejscu w Lublinie, by nie zauważyć festiwalu. W przyszłości warto zawalczyć o większą reklamę, ale już w skali kraju, tym bardziej, że jest się czym chwalić. Dobrym pomysłem byłoby wprowadzenie karnetów na koncerty, bo po podliczeniu cen wszystkich biletów w tym roku, wychodzi jednak dość spory koszt zwłaszcza jak dla mieszkańca wschodniej części Polski. Wydaje się, że karnety zbiłyby choć w jakimś stopniu te ponad 250 zł. Lokalizacja występów jest silną stroną organizatorów, bo wyróżnia festiwal spośród innych odbywających się w naszym kraju, ale tu też pojawiają się wątpliwości, np. kwestia otwartego dla wszystkich koncertu finałowego. Zakładając, że w przyszłości „Inne Brzmienia” będą cieszyć się większym zainteresowaniem, należy się zastanowić nad ograniczeniem ilości wpuszczanych widzów albo po prostu biletowaniem wszystkich koncertów. To jednak zbyt mała przestrzeń, by pomieścić wszystkich chętnych. Inna sprawa, to „kwiatki” pokroju okoliczni mieszkańcy próbujący z okien zakłócić ludziom odbiór muzyki.

Po drugie koncerty. Warto się trzymać obranej formuły, tzn. zapraszać artystów reprezentujących różne, acz nie tak znowu odległe gatunki (festiwal chyba jak żaden inny w Polsce zrealizował postulat „muzyki ponad podziałami”), bo jest to rzecz wyróżniająca „Inne Brzmienia”. Wykonawcy, na koncertach których byłem (Morcheeba, Maciej Maleńczuk, Wojciech Waglewski, Fisz, Emade, Haydamaky, Voo Voo) pokazali się z dobrej strony i niektórzy będą musieli poważnie zweryfikować tezę o „zaścianku Polski” w kontekście Lublina, bo nikt tu nikogo nie traktował po macoszemu. Póki co organizatorzy zapunktowali pomysłowością organizując koncert otwarcia na szczycie Wieży Trynitarskiej oraz kilka innych na dziedzińcu u Dominikanów (żałuję, że ominął mnie występ Marcina Maseckiego, Raphaela Rogińskiego oraz Macio Morettiego, wg obiegowej opinii najlepszy na festiwalu). Zapewne za rok czy dwa nie będą to już tak świeże pomysły, ale to już melodia przyszłości podobnie, jak dobór wykonawców (zastanawiam się, czy eksplorując specyficzną jednak estetykę będzie kogo zapraszać bez ryzyka powtarzania artystów).

Po trzecie przyszłość. Taki festiwal musi być kontynuowany, to nie ulega wątpliwości. Tym bardziej, jeśli wziąć pod uwagę starania Lublina o uzyskanie tytułu Europejskiej Stolicy Kultury 2016. Jak wielkie jest zapotrzebowanie na wydarzenia tego typu pokazały koncerty. Uśmiechy na twarzach artystów nie brały się wyłącznie z czystej kurtuazji – musi być przyjemnie grać dla tak entuzjastycznie reagującej publiczności, co też się nie bierze znikąd. Zwyczajnie takiego wydarzenia brakowało i ludzie są spragnieni podobnych doznań, tym samym nie są zmanierowani, co często się zdarza w większych miastach. Choćby tylko dla tego faktu „Strefa Inne Brzmienia. Lublin-Lwów” musi mieć swój ciąg dalszy.

Koncert Morcheeby, zapowiadany, jako największe wydarzenie lubelsko-lwowskiego festiwalu okazał się dowodem na to, że pierwsze wrażenie bywa czasami mylące.

W sobotni wieczór w Lublinie było gorąco i parno, co w kontekście pogody w pozostałej części kraju mogło zwiastować potężną burzę w trakcie koncertu lub w dalszym ciągu saunę. Tak źle i tak niedobrze. Zastanawiała lokalizacja sceny – na lubelskiej starówce, tuż obok Trybunału Koronnego wciśnięta pomiędzy zabytkowe kamienice. Cena biletów (99 zł), mała jak na występ zagranicznej gwiazdy, ale całkiem spora, jeśli brać pod uwagę region i fakt, iż w związku z wakacjami 1/3 miasta wyjechała (czyli studenci) nie nastrajała optymistycznie co do frekwencji i faktycznie – jeszcze kilka minut przed występem Morcheeby była ona przerażająco niska. Dość powiedzieć, że Ross Godfrey na teren festiwalu przemknął wśród ludności praktycznie niezauważony, nienagabywany o autograf czy rozmowę. Potem jednak na scenie pojawił się sześcioosobowy skład i zaczął się koncert.

Są takie występy, które choć ściągają największe gwiazdy muzyki i tłumy odbiorców, nie elektryzują. Są też takie, które wg racjonalnych przesłanek powinny zakończyć się katastrofą, tymczasem jest zupełnie na odwrót. W sobotni wieczór między Brytyjczykami a lubelską publicznością była chemia. Pierwsi wyluzowani, z uśmiechami na twarzach, ewidentnie zadowoleni i troszeczkę oszołomieni tak gorącym przyjęciem. Drudzy – zaskoczyli z kolei mnie. Okrzyki aprobaty, rzęsiste brawa pomiędzy utworami, które ucichały w jednej sekundzie, gdy zespół zaczynał grać, taniec, nieśmiałe pląsy, uśmiechy na twarzach. Poza tym pełen przedział wiekowy, ale odbiór muzyki jednorodnie pozytywny.

Morcheeba sprawę hitów załatwiła na samym początku grając już jako drugie, oczywiście entuzjastycznie przyjęte przez publiczność „Otherwise”. Cały set na szczęście nie okazał się promocją ostatniej tylko płyty „Dive Deep”, którą reprezentowały przede wszystkim singlowe „Enjoy the Ride”, „Gained the World” czy zaśpiewane przez basistę Bradleya Burgessa „Run Honey Run”. Dużo było starszych numerów m.in. znane z „Big Calm” „The Sea”, „Trigger Hippie”, „Over and Over” z wejściem ciężkiego bitu po pierwszej zwrotce, „Blindfold”, „Part of the Process” czy chyba najbardziej żywiołowo przyjęte przez publikę „The Music That We Hear (Moog Island)”. W pewnym momencie w powietrze wystrzeliły parasolki, zaczął padać deszcz. Na szczęście pogoda nie zniszczyła tego wieczoru i po kilku minutach wszelką ochronę przed zmoknięciem można było schować. Z resztą sam band podtrzymywał temperaturę – tu szczególne słowa uznania dla wokalistki Mandy. Wiadomo, że nie jest łatwo zastąpić charyzmę i ciekłokrystaliczny głos Skye Edwards. Francuzka kipi energią na scenie, czaruje urokiem osobistym i ma bodaj najbardziej zbliżoną barwę głosu do Skye ze wszystkich wokalistek, które pojawiły się w Morcheebie po jej odejściu. Reszta zespołu również w formie, a Ross wycinał całkiem zgrabne solówki na gitarze. Tym samym wiadome było, że fani wyciągną skandowaniem „Mor-chee-ba” zespół na bisy, na których wybrzmiały m.in. zaśpiewane po francusku przy akompaniamencie gitary akustycznej „Au-delà” (jakiś widz nie wytrzymał i krzyknął ekstatycznie do artystów, czym wywołał uśmiech na twarzy Rossa) i oczywiście roztańczony überhit „Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day”. W sumie zespół zagrał mniej więcej półtorej godziny. Prywatne rozczarowania? Tylko jeden utwór z „Charango”.

Lokalizacja koncertu okazała się udanym posunięciem. Otwarta przestrzeń, ale jednocześnie bliskość starych kamienic wywołuje wrażenie, jakbyśmy byli w jakimś zabytkowym pałacu z otwartym dachem. Mury bardzo ładnie zbierały dźwięk, a nad sceną górowała Wieża Trynitarska. Cena biletów spowodowała to, że na Morcheebę przyszli ci, którzy autentycznie chcieli tam być, co było widać po reakcji zgromadzonych na placu ludzi oraz po twarzach muzyków. Z resztą w pewnym momencie Ross Godrefy (wznoszący co jakiś czas toasty z kubeczka z wiadomym raczej płynem i z butelek Budweisera) rzucił do ludzi, iż chciałby być wśród nich i zamiast grać, bawić się tak jak oni tego wieczora.

Za pomoc przy opracowywaniu relacji i zdjęcia dziękuję Kamili.

Z nieskrywaną satysfakcją zapowiadam i polecam Wam festiwal w moim rodzinnym Lublinie. W ciągu kilku dni wystąpią polscy i zagraniczni wykonawcy z największą gwiazdą na czele, zespołem Morcheeba. Na sam koniec zaś dubeltowy finał – darmowy koncert Voo Voo, Kairos i Haydamaky w Kozim Grodzie oraz dzień później we Lwowie.

Festiwal wpisuje się idealnie w dążenia Lublina do zdobycia tytułu Europejskiej Stolicy Kultury w 2016 roku. Publiczność będzie miała okazję zobaczyć występy wielu świetnych polskich wykonawców. Wystąpią: Voo Voo, Wojciech Waglewski wraz z synami Fiszem i Emade oraz w oddzielnym koncercie z Maciejem Maleńczukiem, Martyna Jakubowicz, Osjan, Marcin Masecki Trio, Kroke, EMPE3, Motion Trio, Trebunie-Tutki i Kairos. Barwy międzynarodowe będą reprezentować: Jamajczycy z The Twinkle Brothers, nujazzowy Club des Belugas z Niemiec, Haydamaky oraz największa gwiazda festiwalu, Morcheeba.

Myślę, że czytelnikom mojego bloga nie muszę przybliżać sylwetki tego zespołu i krótką wzmiankę czynię jedynie z dziennikarskiego obowiązku. Londyński band, to dziecko braci Godfrey, Paula i Rossa. W latach 90 tworzyli oni wraz z m.in. Portishead czy Massive Attack nurt, który zapisał się w historii muzyki pod nazwą trip-hop. Na trzeciej płycie nastąpił radykalny zwrot w twórczości kapeli i pierwszy tak wielki sukces na skalę światową – pogodny utwór „Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day” szturmował listy przebojów. Czwarta płyta „Charango”, to jeden z najlepszych albumów pop XXI wieku. Trzeba uczciwie zaznaczyć, że znakiem rozpoznawczym Morcheeby przez wiele lat była obdarzona niebiańskim głosem wokalistka Skye Edwards, która jednak odeszła z zespołu w 2003 roku. Przez następne lata i albumy jej miejsce próbowały zastąpić różne artystki, ostatnio Francuzka Manda.

Koncerty odbędą się na Rynku Starego Miasta i dziedzińcu u Dominikanów. Bilety w cenach 22 i 99 zł (Morcheeba) do nabycia m.in. w Empikach, Media Markt lub przez www.ticketpro.pl . Daca v-a placut Morcheeba pana prin 2003, sigur v-a placut Skye Edwards (google it, o sa gasiti numai forum-uri/blog-uri despre cum fratii Godfrey au dat-o afara). Sincer, dupa ce am ascultat ultimul album Morcheeba, am ramas un pic dezamagit. Parca si Daisy Martey (prima solista care a inlocuit-o pe Skye) suna mai bine, Jody “nu-stiu-cum”, actuala voce, nu ma incanta deloc. Cica ar canta si la saxofon… Whatever!

Skye a lansat un album prin 2006 si daca va e dor de vechea Morcheeba (deh, suna a nume feminin, de aici “vechea”), sau chiar de Gorrillaz (are un cover dupa “Feel good Inc.”) puteti sa-l ascultati pe MySpace.

Acum, desi urasc MySpace-ul, in general, o sa-mi calc pe inima si sa pun un banner catre el. Enjoy!

A few things have been announced the past several months:

1. Morcheeba, having decided to ditch the idea of keeping a permanent lead vocalist in residence, will release their sixth album, Dive Deep, in early 2008, with different guests contributing to nearly every track. Paul Godfrey gives a detailed commentary & a rundown of each track here.

Blue Chair ft Judy Tzuke is a pleasingly variant take on the morcheeba signature sound…actually an interesting listen, if initially a counterintuitive combination of music and vocals (or at least for me it was).

Gained the World ft Manda (a french vocalist who comes to the group via myspace) again, an element of their vintage sound freshened by the addition of the new vocalist.

One Love Karma ft Calm Cool Pete-heh. really enjoyable track.

2. The brothers have posted a capella tracks from the upcoming album here.

3. Tour dates in 2008 will be forthcoming–throwing in another candidate for coachella? they always have the errant downtempo crew who’s given a nighttime slot at one of the smaller stages easily overpowered by whatever’s going on at the adjacent venue.

4. Skye, of course, having parted ways with the brothers after Charango, released a solo album in 2006 & has teamed with Marc Collin (nouvelle vague) to contribute a few tracks to his latest project, also due out in 2008.

I could post her ‘What’s wrong with me (nouvelle vague remix)’ but instead i’ll post this…her cover of Feel Good Inc. even more addictive than the Editors cover of the same song.

5. Daisy Martey…having released a fourth album with Noonday Underground in late ‘06, is currently working on a project called Sexual Terrorist, and starting her own ‘teeny tiny label’. Looking forward to hearing more from her.  12/22–it appears that Daisy Martey sings backing vocals on Kevin Ayers 2007 release-the unfairground.
