I was going along quite happily when I chanced upon Google along the way. Google seemed very austere

I was going along quite happily when I chanced upon Google along the way.

Google seemed very austere, no flashing banners, no blinking buttons, no prettiness at all in fact but very COOL non the less. Clothed in simple green and blue, I liked Google right away.

Google said that I could search all of the world’s information that was online. Google said that one day, in the future, the sum of all human experience, the totality of all knowledge would be safely stored and managed by Google.

Wow! I said. What do you want in return? Nothing said Google. It’s completely FREE.

Later Google said to me that I could use a new ‘threaded’ email system that would give me 2Gb of web memory space so that I need never ever delete another email. All of my emails could be kept for the record.

Wow! I said. What do you want in return? Nothing said Google. It’s completely FREE.

Still later Google said to me that I was so loved that I could have a calendar in which I could input all of my appointments and tasks and all of my contacts of friends, family and associates. I could access this information from any computer, anywhere in the world at any time.

Wow! I said. What do you want in return? Nothing said Google. It’s completely FREE.

Then Google gave me Docs for me to write and analyse, plan and present with such ease and accessible by anyone who I authorised. My friend and I could work on the same document together even if he was in Tokyo and I am in London.

Wow! I said. What do you want in return? Nothing said Google. It’s completely FREE.

Over the years Google has given me Alerts, Books, Blogger, Checkout, Chrome, Custom Search, Desktop, Earth, Finance, IGoogle, Images, Maps, News, Product Search, Scholar, Toolbar, YouTube and also Groups, Picassa, Reader, Sites, SketchUp, Translate and more…

Wow! I said. What do you want in return? Nothing said Google. It’s completely FREE.

Google just kept on giving and giving and giving…
Over the years Google and I have become very close, so close that Google knows more about me than I probably do.

Who I am, who my freinds and family are: Gmail, Contacts, Calendar, Checkout, Steetview. Google has a record of all of my personal information including banking and financial affairs. My calendar holds up to date contact information on all of my family, friends and business associates. It knows where they all live and what their houses and streets look like.

My financial affairs: Adsence, Adwords, Checkout, Streetview. Google knows where I work, what I do and how much money I make, where that money comes from and why. Google knows where I work, from which office and what it looks like.

Where I am, what time, with whom, for how long: Calendar, Latitude, Maps, Gmail, Earth, Search. Google knows where I am from my Calendar but also from the computer I am using it can tell which city I’m in, how I got there, which websites I visit, how long I stayed there and which language I read in.

What I read and talk about: Google News, Gmail, Blogger, Search, GTalk, Voice. Google knows what type of news I am interested in. It knows what subjects I read about. It knows and has back ups of every single email that I have sent or was sent to me and by whom at what time and what the content was. These are packaged in ‘conversations’ so are all related to each other.

What my interests are: Search, Blogger, Voice, Picassa, Gmail, Toolbar, Docs, Checkout. Google tracks every search I make and which links I click to and for how long. Google knows my shopping habits, what I buy, where they are delivered to and how much it cost. It deduces my spending budget and financial thresholds.

What I watch and when I watch: YouTube, Search. Google notes what I look at on YouTube and how many similar videos I watch. It can deduce from this what kind of TV and movie shows I would be interested in and when they should be promoted. Every search is logged and recorded.

Once cross-referenced and cross-correlated, Google can infer from this arsenal of digital information my complete make-up as a human being and a Google user.

The listing above is NOT exhaustive and I am sure readers can point out other areas of Google dominance. Hint: Google Health, Google Mobile, Google Wave, Chrome OS… get my drift?

You might think that, knowing all of the above as I do, I am against Google. But you’d be wrong. I actually believe that, so far, Google is a worthy entity and on the whole makes life easier for most. It would be of concern if the Google directors ever make an attempt to rename it SkyNet.

Right now, Google is a benevolent power. Let’s hope it stays thus.

Ignoring that blithely happy look on our little friend’s face, we notice Skynet written in familiar Google colouring. The shirt’s creator BustedTees make the comparison of Google in our world with Skynet of well, where Arnold saves everyone anyway. Since the Governator exists in this world, we’ll be safe…won’t we?

Would you wear Google Skynet? or Would you be afraid of jinxing your luck?

It has been quite a week here at homebase. I lost a load of links when I lost my PC. I’m not sure how that’s going to affect our final count today, but we’ll see.

We also welcome a new Geek to the herd this week. Aamir comes to us on a strong recommendation from Chris and we’re glad to have him in the fold. Look for him to start posting very soon.

And before we get to the links, it wouldn’t be LinkFrogging without our weekly slice of cheesecake. This week that cheesecake is Tina Fey. Love her or hate her, Tina is seeminly everywhere. Her take on Sarah Palin may have single-handedly submarined the former Alaska governor as a potential vice-presidential candidate. On a recent episode of David Letterman, when asked about a story that she was a virgin well into her 20’s her response was…”couldn’t give it away.” It disarmed Letterman. That’s hard to do. Tina can be seen on NBC’s 30 Rock each Thursday night.

On with the links.

Positioning is a tricky thing. I mean, on the one hand, you kind of have to admire the balls shown by the creative team in charge of branding the Motorolla’s alleged iPhone killer, the Droid. They basically looked at the conceptual space owned by iPhone – most humanistic, engaging, downright gregarious smartphone on the planet – and in textbook fashion invented the most polarizing brand personality possible: a cold, inhuman robot.

Differentiating, check.

Appealing? Hells no! R2-D2 might register as a positive association, but they’re making the thing look more like some kind of Skynet device come to imprison humanity. I mean, I get that it’s not an iPhone. Confusion allayed. But you know what? I still prefer my gadgets warm and cuddly. Just look at that photo above. It reminds me of HAL from 2001.

In short, based on the campaign so far, I don’t give a rat’s ass what Droid does. That thing has obviously been sent from the future to destroy us.

The internet is now reaching under the oceans. Wally here (pictured) is the first internet-operated deep-sea crawler. He communicates with devices connected to a large ring of fiber optic cable sitting on the ocean floor off the coast of Canada.

Scientists say this will lead to greater ability to map and explore the ocean floor.
Google is probably looking at developing Google sea or something.
And the military will be looking to communicate with submarines.
Skynet will be controlling those submarines.

I sometimes live on the bleeding edge of technology. Some like to call this being an “early ad

I sometimes live on the bleeding edge of technology. Some like to call this being an “early adapter.” Others think I should join a support program with a twelve-step program. My office has a room devoted to hardware and software I’ve bought, tried out, experimented upon, recommended, and sometimes even installed for my consulting company clients, including quite a few law firms.

When I built a new house a few years ago, I just had to investigate the new energy conservation devices, which could lower my utility bills, reduce my “carbon footprint,” and save the world. Likewise, I just had to experiment with design of home theatre and security system wiring, and the home computer network itself. I sometimes chatted about these with others in the neighborhood who were building houses, but didn’t mention one “enhancement” I had secretly worked on.

As the house was being built, I realized it would be more cost efficient to do all the wiring I would ever need, up front, rather than piece-mealing it later. I had been reading about the strides toward creation of working “smart houses” and other Web 3.0 applications, so I decided to make an investment in the future.

I worked with the various vendors installing my alarm system, home theater, cable, phone and other electronic systems, and got them to lay the groundwork for me. Then, being the bleeding edge geek I am, I began my own tinkering, gradually adding new components, as they entered beta stage. Fortunately, one of my clients is an appliance company, so I was able to make some relatively good purchases and get great deals on some important components.

When Thanksgiving came up on my calendar this year, I decided it was time to give the new system a trial run. I really wasn’t ready for a full-blown trial run, but one of my sons knows a lot more about this stuff than I do, so I figured if I got some of the system up and running, he would be in town at Thanksgiving to give me a hand debugging the parts.

This was also going to be the first year with multiple grandchildren, in addition to some of our friends who had become annual Thanksgiving dinner guests. That meant we had to get out the extra leaf for the dining room table, but it really meant the logistics were starting to add up to the point of being almost unmanageable. The question was whether or not I somehow pull off this Web 3.0 Thanksgiving plan in time to really help.

I got out my copy of Microsoft Project and went to work. This had to be a collaborative effort and, fortunately, seemed to be an interesting challenge for the partners in the project. Admittedly, I felt a little like Chevy Chase in one of my favorite movies of the season, Christmas Vacation, trying to pull off wiring the house to win the neighborhood Christmas lighting prize, but eventually, I finished and it was time to send out the invitations.

I decided to start with an old favorite, evite®, so I could at least try to track who would really be coming and send guest updates in a burst. It also helped get a few other issues out of the way early, such as special dietary concerns of some of the guests, coordinating menu items for those who always insist on bringing Aunt Tillie’s famous recipe, etc. I know there are lots of invitation applications out there, but since I’ve used evite® for many events and was familiar with the foibles and periodic “surprises” as it continues to develop, it was an easy choice for alerting guests to “save the date,” and then to harvest the data as we got closer to The Big Day.

Like many American families, we have established some traditions over the years. That meant timing of various parts of the event had to be precise. With folks arriving at various times, subject to last minute variables, this was always a challenge. I thought it would be interesting to see if a preview of a Web 3.0 world would be any better.

Once the first round of evite® responses started to come back and we had our first estimate of the number of guests and basic menu, I was able to get some online counsel for wine pairings with the various dishes, estimate the number of bottles needed, and place my order. One task completed.

About the time we were building our new house, I happened to read Christoper Allbritton’s story in Popular Mechanics, Control Your Appliances Over The Internet. I tried to remain mindful of Albritton’s reference to the “Terminator” sci-fi movies, and scenario where the fictional military artificial intelligence defense system, Skynet, takes over for humans and then starts to eradicate them as a potential threat. Since my plans didn’t include any air-to-ground missiles, I decided that LG Electronics’ HomNet was a good place to start. After all, their home page says:

LG HomNet is the total home network solution providing a convenient secure, joyful and affluent lifestyle anywhere and anytime with the integration of various digital home appliances. LG HomNet makes the future lifestyle into reality. LG HomNet will usher into a future lifestyle that used to be possible only in the movies and the imagination, together with ultra-high speed Internet, artificial intelligence, and advanced robots.

LG HomNet, a home network system developed by state-of-the-art technologies from LG Electronics!

You will be provided with a new pleasant and convenient digital living culture of the 21st century through intelligent networking of all-digital appliances, agnostic to any wired and wireless communication technology.

We invite you to a new living culture which has been dreamed about by the whole human race.

Aside from the grammatical issues in LG’s statement, and hoping their use of the term “agnostic” was meant to be closer to the original Greek, as opposed to the more recent religious interpretation, who could resist something, which would provide a convenient, secure, joyful, and affluent lifestyle, anywhere and anytime? Not me.

After taking the HomNet Experience online, I started with the refrigerator/server, adding the ovens, microwaves, and some other appliances in the kitchen. This proved a handy way to coordinate keeping foods chilled, cooking the hot foods, timing the warming of those foods in the food queue, and even providing a shopping list tied into the menu archive, and the family calendar, which is always visible on the door of the refrigerator. This was also great to avoid the previously inevitable, last minute return trips to the grocery for an item that didn’t make it on the old paper grocery lists. Now we could take remote inventory from the store, to make sure we really had walnuts for the dressing or enough whipping cream for the pie.

Once the big day came, we could actually sit back for the first time, and just wait for last minute evite® updates on arrival times. Granted, as James Gunter points out in his law enforcement blog post, Twitter is Not the Holy Grail of Emergency Notification, using Twitter alone as an alarm system is dangerous, but if only the turkey is at state, this may be sufficient. With our Twitter early warning system tied into the day’s calendar on our refrigerator, we were notified, in order, that: our oldest son and girlfriend were on their way; younger son and new grandchildren would be slightly delayed, due to a diaper change; our daughter’s friends would have to make a stop to pick something up on the way; and my old law firm partner and family would be here “soon.”

“Soon” always had a special meaning for my old partner’s arrival, but having done an earlier blog post on the Twitter Geoloction API, I had convinced him to start “tweeting.” With a little advanced coordination, I was able to tell they had not left home yet, was alerted when they started to move in our direction, and a new ETA appeared next to their family avatar on our handy refrigerator/server/message center. Our voice recognition system and data-to speech-program even announced that guests were arriving, making those already inside our “smart house” feel like they were early guests at a presidential ball, where dignitaries are announced as they enter. This was particularly helpful in marshalling the troops to help get the new twins inside before the fresh air woke them up.

Really Cool, New Sixth-Sense Technology was the pride and joy of my new system, even if it was still a beta version. The cobbled aggregation consists of off-the-shelf, Web cam, portable battery-powered 3-D projection system, and other devices connected to the user’s cell phone. The system’s ability to project keypads and other tools onto any surface, to make it a device like those used by Tom Cruise in Minority Report, proved very helpful in the game room. The RFID tracking system allowed us to locate the kids who were tardy in departure from the media room, turning down the heat in that room during dinner, and returning them to the appropriate spot in the movie they were watching upon their return.

We were able to use all this technology to time when dinner started, so the parents of the little kids enjoyed the rare treat of being able to eat in relative peace, coordinating with nap and infant feeding schedules for that optimal state of “joyfulness” promised by the appliance company. It also allowed us to finish before the preselected football games appeared on the adult’s monitors, cartoons came up for the tikes, and video games for the rest of the younger kids.

The background music, which gradually came up as we sat down to eat was a nice touch, as was the list of conversation points, which appeared in the wireless 3D i-glasses some had elected to wear. The ability to look through the glasses at a guest, allow the facial recognition and identification system enough time to identify the guest, and then call up conversation topics suggested by their Facebook references, and other social media search results, including their blogs, proved interesting, if not a little too revealing for some.

The great meal now being history, we can review the video record of the whole event to work on ways to improve it for next year. Using the facial recognition and identification system, we can piece together the level of “joyfulness” for each family member and guest, item-by-item, and plug these back into project software to start planning next year’s event.

The transportation alert module paid off in the first year, letting my oldest son and girlfriend know the system was well on the way to rerouting them back to Chicago, due to a snow storm interrupting their original plans to fly back into O’Hare. The placemats, inspired by some iPhone apps, allowed us to check just how much food each family member and guest had consumed, and for those who desired it, their iPhone apps would now “remind” them of the exercise plan the system had outlined to return them to normal size, including, of course, the appropriate level of play on their Wii Fit™ system at home.

Now, on to Cyber Monday Shopping.

Il y a Vincent Crabbé (Brand and Communication Director), Jean-Marc Poncelet( Manager Small Entreprise Marketing), Jan Sonck( Marketing Director), Catherine Bals( Head of Marketing Communications),…

The end.

Synopsis: 2003.

Note globale: 17/25, soit 13,6/20.

Everyone hates spammers. I hate them not because of the spam but because of the measures they force people implement to prevent spam, which in turn forces me to go through aforementioned measures. Pretty much every blog I try and comment on now makes me go through a Captcha word association game but now that’s even extended to Twitter via TrueTwit. It’s not enough that you could just decide not to accept the request, no, people have to put a TrueTwit response on their account which means:

You follow them

TrueTwit sends you a direct message

You click link to confirm you are real

You complete irritating Captcha

They then allow you to follow them

Such a pain in the arse as I’m getting TrueTwit come up on about 1 in 6 follows now – which means soon it will be one in 5… 4… 3… then everyone will have it. Soon, there will be a script/ robot/ platform to respond to TrueTwit to prove you are a human (or a spammer). Soon there will be something new. Soon we will have robots talking to scripts, talking to robots to prove we are human. Until then, join me in Beloved Raping… sorry, I mean the joy of robots throwing out random words.

IBM moves closer to creating chips based on the brain (via Techmeme):

IBM said today that it has made significant progress toward developing a computer that simulates and emulates the brain’s abilities to sense, perceive, interact, and recognize.

The computer does this by imitating the brain’s low-power energy consumption and compact size, and it has an intelligence level that approaches the smarts of a cat. Big Blue will announce the development at the SC 09 supercomputer conference in Portland, Ore.

I don’t know. Whadda you think? Should I just declare my lifelong devotion to Skynet now, and skip all that work-camp and starvation stuff later? It’s just a matter of time, you know.

- Porra! Ainda é 2009! O fim do mundo tá adiantado!

THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE! E quando o ultimo quickening ocorrer, teremos o fim do mundo? Uma grande tarsformação? Zumbis se alimenteando do ultimo imortal? Só quem sobreviver, verá.

From the future Skynet sends their cyborgs to destroy one man and anyone else in their path. The story is well known and these ultra intelligent robots are incredible pieces of art. One wonders where did they come from, how did they start and what was the driving factor behind investing all the money into research for the creation of these machines…

Bionic Hand

Prof. Yosi Shacham-Diamond from Tel Aviv Universities department of engineering with a team of E.U. scientists have successfully attached a robotic hand to the nerve endings in the stump of a severed arm. Robin af Ekenstam from Sweden is the project’s first human subject. Since the hand has been attached Robin has been able to do complex tasks such as eat and write. He reports that he can once again feel his (robotic) fingers.

This is a massive step forward in terms of robotics and the application abilities are amazing. With steel being potentially stronger than bone we could create a defence force of super humans. The concept is that nerves in the arm after it has been severed remain intact and can be connected to a device with the capabilities to both send and receive impulses. This allows for you to wire a machine directly to the brain.

The “Smarthand” uses a flexible electrode that will last for 20 years once attached and with the use of 40 sensors and 4 electric servo motors the hand allows the brain to individually control the finger joints and allows for sensations to be sent back in just the same way a natural hand does. With the hand being the most complicated limb on the human body we can now expect bionic limbs and other appendages to be made. With research being put now into articifial skin the “Smarthand” can look normal and we can expect even more feeling to be incorporated. Science fiction has become reality…
