Le novità che si vogliono indicare con il titolo del post, non riguardano l’applicazione, ma alcuni nuovi servizi proposti dal sito al fine di una migliore gestione del proprio profilo  e dei propri contatti.

Dunque dal blog ufficiale Fring Italia:

1) Friend Finder “una nuova funzione di fring che vi permetterà di cercare i vostri amici su fring e di invitare quelli che ancora non sono iscritti o che proprio non lo conoscono.

Cercate all’interno del database di fring inserendo i seguenti dati: User ID, nick name di fring o e-mail dell’utente che desiderate contattare. Se non trovate il vostro amico tramite questa e-mail non disperate, piuttosto provate a cercarlo con il suo nick name. fring vi fornisce diverse opzioni, quindi non preoccupatevi, cercate di usare le altre informazioni in vostro possesso per trovare i vostri amici non solo tramite e-mail.

Nei risultati delle ricerche potrete vedere il profilo dei fringster (se il loro profilo è pubblico) e chiedere loro di aggiungervi come amico alla loro lista amici (cliccate sull’icona “+”)”.

2) Nuovo Profilo Utente: “nuova pagina di profilo per tutti i fringster, adesso disponibile sul sito di fring, così come sull’ultima versione di fring per Symbian S60 (presto disponibile anche per altre piattaforme e versioni).

Ognuno di voi fringster ha una pagina dedicata al proprio profilo su fring.com. La pagina è al momento non attiva. In modo da pubblicarla e renderla utilizzabile andate su http://profile.fring.com/login ed effettuate il login utilizzando il vostro user id e la vostra password di fring come credenziali (se non vi ricordate la vostra password di fring cliccate qui).

Dopo aver attivato e aggiornato il vostro profilo potrete scegliere di renderlo pubblico o privato; tenete bene in mente, però, che rendendolo privato alcuni fringster alla vostra ricerca potrebbero non trovarvi.

Potrete mandare il link della vostra pagina del profilo ai vostri amici per far sapere loro il vostro User-ID fring e farvi aggiungere facilmente come amici su fring. E, naturalmente, gli amici che visitano la pagina web dedicata al vostro profilo potranno chattare con voi grazie al fringME! Widget, godendo del collegamento diretto tra il web e il vostro telefonino.

楽しみにした料金確定だったのですが少し意外でした。

私の場合は二つの特殊要因があるのでこの料金は一般的な使い方には当てはまらないと思います。二つの要因とは

• ９９パーセントの使用はお店でWiFiの環境があります。
• そのWiFiの電波を使い、他社携帯、および固定電話にはiPhone Skypeで電話するため通話料金が発生しないこと。

この条件があるので一般的な使い方ではないと思います。まずは5月の請求内訳から。

続いて内訳明細。

そして丸一月分の6月の料金。

6月分の料金内訳。

不思議なのは、このPCダイレクトという19万パケットのパケット料金なんです。私はメールはGmailを使っています。天気をみたり、株価をチェックしたりもします。しかしこれらはWiFiがとんでいるお店と２階でしか接続していないので、どうしてこのパケットが発生しているかが不思議なのです。ほぼゼロだろうと思っていたので。

ただ、iPhoneユーザーに聞いたところ、一人はパケット料は２０万円分相当、もう一人は８，９万円相当は使っていらっしゃるとか。聞いた中で一番使ってらっしゃる方が387、050円でした。しかし、これはパケットフルの上限５，９８５円(現在は４，４１０円)でおさめれています。15，000円で4200円取られるのは微妙な感じです。実はパケット代下限の1，029円で済むだろうと思っていましたので。

SoftBankも甘くはありません。感想はインターネットなどを外で使えば使うほどパケットの割安感が増すこと。そして、皆さんの現在ご使用の携帯の通話料金(iPhone skypeを使う代わりに)をこの金額に上乗せしたのがiPhoneの月々の利用料になるのではないでしょうか。

Minor update per Fring, a poche settimane dal rilascio della versione 3.40. Si passa dalla versione 3.40 build 17 alla build 19 semplicemente a correggere alcuni bug come un processo d’installazione non troppo veloce. Quest’aggiornamento è ora avviabile per i dispositivi S60 (Symbian OS 9.x). Attraverso il canale twitter, Fring avverte che anche la chat Yahoo è stata fixata.

Guida all’utilizzo delle nuove Features:

• Per fondere insieme più contatti, seguite questi passi: nella lista dei contatti selezionate l’utente che desiderate unire in uno solo > Slezionate “Manage buddies” > Scegliete “Merge buddies” > Sarete ricondotti alla vostra lista utenti. Scrollate fino agli altri nomi dello stesso contatto che desiderate riunire > Cliccate OK per selezionare il box vicino ad ognuno di essi > Salvate. Avete finito.
• Per aggiornare il vostro profilo cliccate su Opzioni > Modifica il mio profilo > Opzioni > Scegliete Aggiorna immagine / Aggiorna testo di umore (lo status) / Cambia soprannome.
• Quando, all’inzio, vi registrerete su fring, sarete avvertiti subito dei vostri amici appartenenti a social communities o alla vostra rubrica telefonica già fringster. Una volta che comincerete a usare fring vi faremo sapere quando altri amici diventeranno fringster semplicemente clickando su Opzioni> Manage buddies> Friend finder”.

Fring 3.40 è disponibile per tutti i dispositivi S60 3rd edition e 5th edition (Symbian 9,9.2, 9.3, 9.4).

The day has finally come, I have been able to place a SIP call directly to and from the Skype network via a Skype service. I received my Skype for SIP (SfS) closed beta credentials yesterday and immediately set to work configuring endpoints to start making calls.

The first step was to use an XLite Softphone to connect to the Skype SIP proxy. Then I graduated to connecting an Asterisk server. While there were some initial issues, Skype worked with the beta testers and had all of the major elements working by the end of the first day. I am impressed by how few issues there actually are, but I guess that is to be expected since this service leverages the same infrastructure behind SkypeOut and SkypeIn. Those services have been around for years and make up some of Skype’s core revenue generating business.

Here was what I was able to do so far:

• Asterisk/XLite -> SIP -> SkypeOut -> PSTN (w/G711 codec)
• PSTN -> SkypeIn -> SIP -> Asterisk/XLite (w/G729 codec)
• Skype User -> SIP -> Asterisk/XLite

(Note: What I will not be able to try is ‘Asterisk/Xlite -> SIP -> Skype User’ since this is intentionally blocked by Skype. I presume this is to protect their SkypeIn business by blocking the ability to create a competing alternative.)

If you have used the SkypeIn/SkypeOut services before, then you already know the quality of the calling. So far I have not had any issues with the call quality or dropped calls once the kinks were worked out.

While Skype is supporting the freely available G711 codec via its SIP gateways, it is dependent on what codecs are supported by the carrier that is being used to terminate a particular call. So while on SkypeOut I was able to use the G711 codec to terminate to numbers in the San Francisco Bay Area (415/650), on SkypeIn to a San Jose number (408) the only available codec was g729. So the reality is, you will need to have a SIP endpoint that supports the licensed G729 codec for reliable use.

The current calls are not encrypted. Skype has already stated they intend to support TLS/SRTP in the near future as encryption is considered a core feature for SIP as much as for their P2P calls.

As time permits I will be continuing to do more tests as well as contrasting with the Skype for Asterisk (SfA) beta software. Skype is definitely on the right track by opening their network to key standards with multiple interfacing options. I believe Skype is now poised to become a key global player in the business VoIP market, as well as bringing in a broader range of developers.

I began to think this day would never come, but it has…

Estava conformada em habilitar meu celular TIM para levá-lo ao exterior, como sou cliente pré-pago, deveria ter no mínimo R$ 50 de saldo e pagar quase R$7 o minuto, para receber ou fazer uma ligação, ou R$2 cada sms. Não que eu fosse fazer alguma ligação com ele (só sms), mas em caso de emergência, podia ser útil. Queria muito poder falar com o namorado e família, sem gastar tanto. Sei da existência dos calling cards, e essa seria a minha opção, até que recebi pelo twitter um update do Ricardo Freire com um link para o Frugal Traveler do NY Times.

Não acreditei quando li a matéria falando do skype, um programa que já

Skype + chip local

utilizo há algum tempo. A solução proposta foi: Creditos Skype + chip local + número SkypeIn. Vou explicar como funciona. Para quem não conhece, os créditos skype servem para fazer ligações a preços baixos para telefones fixos e celulares em qualquer lugar do mundo. O número online (SkypeIn), é um telefone fixo para o qual as pessoas podem ligar de um telefone fixo ou celular (pagando tarifa local), e a chamada cai no seu Skype do PC. Agora, não pense que ficará preso a um computador esperando alguém te ligar!

É para isso que serve o chip local, se você tem um celular desbloqueado. No Skype, na função ’encaminhar chamadas’, coloque o número do chip local recém-adquirido.  O que acontece? A pessoa liga para o seu número online (DDD 11, por ex.) e você atende em qualquer lugar do mundo no seu celular.  Se ela estiver em SP ela paga uma chamada local, e você não paga roaming internacional, paga apenas o valor de uma chamada skype para o país do chip (SkypeOut). Não é uma descoberta?

Agora, quanto custa tudo isso? Bom, para ter um número online por 3 meses, paga-se € 15. Se você tiver algum plano de assinatura (Brasil 400 – 400 minutos de chamadas para fixos no país, de onde você estiver, por exemplo) esse número vem incluso, de graça. Some à isso, créditos para fazer chamadas SkypeOut, 25 reais, no mínimo. Uma chamada para um celular no Reino Unido, por exemplo, custa R$ 0,75 centavos por minuto (tarifa 0,60 + 0,15 de taxa de conexão).  Pelo valor de 1 minuto com a TIM, você fala 7 minutos com o Skype. Será o fim da telefonia celular como conhecemos?

Claro que essa opção ainda deve sair mais cara do que os calling cards, mas a mobilidade está aí. Pensei muito, não sabia se fazia uma assinatura, ou não, mas meu namorado já tem uma conta Skype. E minha família, adepta da tecnologia pode facilmente criar uma. Então, apesar do inconveniente de falar no computador, fica ainda mais barato, porque podem ligar para o seu celular sem gastar nada, pois chamadas Skype/Skype pelo computador são de graça. Você apenas pagará os minutos SkypeOut (por utilizar a função encaminhar). Além disso, configurando números Skype to Go, você faz chamadas pelo Skype, de um telefone convencional, e paga uma chamada local.

No começo foi complicado para eu entender e explicar a logistica da coisa para todos, mas fiz o teste.  Encaminhei minhas chamadas Skype para meu telefone daqui do Brasil. Guga, sempre prestativo (de quem eu vou morrer de saudades!!), me ligou pelo PC, e a chamada com qualidade boa, foi recebida no telefone, sem problema algum. Se funciona aqui, porque não funcionaria lá? Não é mesmo?

Update: Estou aqui na Europa, e o esquema Skype funciona muito bem.

La novità di questa ulteriore 3.37, è che si aggiorna l’Add On di Twitter alla versione 2.0. Direttamente dal blog ufficiale di Fring Italia:

Six years ago, when I wanted to make a conference call involving five participants, Bell Canada wanted to charge me $0.55 per minute per participant, resulting in a $165 cost for a one hour call. All those participants had to be in North America and a conference call operator was involved. The moderator could try to “chair” the session but there were limited ways to actually manage who spoke. Any archiving of the session would rely on participants’ handwritten or typed notes.

Flash forward to today: iotum has analyzed the entire set of processes required for managing and moderating a voice conference call from scheduling and invitation to final archiving of the call for future reference. And they have researched today’s communications infrastructure, including web services and low cost voice connections.

They have executed on iotum CEO and co-founder Alec Saunders’ Voice 2.0 Manifesto. Today they are announcing the launch of their enhanced Calliflower Conference Call service – a fully interactive, complete voice conference call service that has been in beta for over a year.

Users have told us that their overwhelming unmet need was not to have another point solution, but to have a single tool that could manage these complex Active Conversations. And when we looked at the market, most of the innovations being introduced are actually isolated features in search of integration solution — coordination, the audio call itself, document sharing, and text messaging to name a few examples.

Originally developed as a Facebook application, they recently provided direct Calliflower portal access from the web. With today’s announcements CalliFlower is offering Premium services such as document sharing, enhanced worldwide “local” calling access and business administrator support. To top off their announcement, Calliflower goes mobile with an iPhone application that provides full access to these calls.

So what comprises the complete interactive conference call experience?

• Prior to the call: Scheduling and invitations. Reminders via SMS or email. Low cost or free access for participants. Identification of participants calling in via either a PIN number or mobile number callerID.
• During the call: A call-specific web page that displays an agenda, call participants, an interactive chat window, while allowing hand raising, muting, call recording and document sharing.
• After the call: not only is the recording archived but also the entire call web page for recall of, say, URL’s given out in the chat window or the recording itself.

The cost to participants? Simply the cost of reaching an access point.

Previously the Calliflower calls could be reached by calling a number in Minnesota or France using the PSTN, SkypeOut or a couple of other softphone VoIP services. Going forward iotum will also be using Voxbone’s newly launched iNum service, initially providing free access to a +883 number from any of Voxbone’s iNum Service Provider Partners or via 55 iNum local access points worldwide.

The heart of the Calliflower service is its use of dynamic interactive web services as the backbone to the features described above.

During the call all participants can access the call’s web page “portal” for a fully interactive call experience as described above. The moderator can mute individual participants when the kids are crying or dogs are barking in the background. Having used the service many times during the beta period I found the combination of the web page’s feature set changes the overall dynamics of a conference call and significantly enhances the participants’ conference call experience.

Once completed the call recording and web page are available for recall by any of the participants or anyone else registered with Calliflower who may want to review the call. Recordings can be inserted into websites or weblogs, such as Alec does with his SquawkBox Conference Calls that periodically discuss technology industry developments.

The iPhone application (available shortly at the Apple App Store) provides full access to your calls, whether scheduled, during a call or in the past. Past call recordings and chat walls can be readily listened to or read. One “future” feature that that still requires development is the creation of calls from the iPhone.

Basic Calliflower Conference Calls will be free; while the Premium service is priced at the special introductory price of $50 per month, for two organizers, with a no-risk 30-day free trial period, until Jan. 1, 2009. Additional organizers cost $25 per month each.

We have seen the rise of many conference calling services over the past year, based on lower cost communications network architectures incorporating VoIP. However, typically they simply make the call connections or have a limited set of features. Having used the beta Calliflower service many times over the past 12 months I have been able to witness its evolution into this complete interactive voice and web service resulting in a unique conference call participant experience (and there are still a few nifty features to come).

My costs for accessing these many calls over the past few years: the $2.95 per month SkypeOut subscription charge (which lets me also make unlimited calls to within North America). And I never need a PIN code; Calliflower recognizes that my SkypeOut CallerID is also my registered mobile phone number CallerID. This allows me to also access Calliflower calls from my BlackBerry using iSkoot which cannot recognize touch tones required for PIN numbers.

Definitely worth giving it a try, not simply for the cost saving but especially for the value-add it brings to the entire conference call user experience.

The ‘Skype for 3’ application now allows you to do Skype Out calls, but only to numbers abroad.

If you start up the application you’ll see all your Skype Out contacts and if you try to call any UK based ones from the UK you’ll get a message stating ‘You can only make calls to numbers abroad’.

I’ve called a friend in Italy using the application and everything works fine with the call being billed to my Skype Credit. Oh you can also check your Skype Credit directly from the application as well now.

Per request I created another icon for the Skype4Pidgin plugin. The new one helps you to distinguish between normal Skype buddies and SkypeOut buddies. It also has a different color than the normal Skype icon, just as the original. Here it is:

Turns out that Skype is not only one of the cheapest ways to call somebody, it’s also the safest, according to CNet:

“Jennifer Caukin, Skype’s director of corporate communications replied to us: “We have not received any subpoenas or court orders asking us to perform a live interception or wiretap of Skype-to-Skype communications. In any event, because of Skype’s peer-to-peer architecture and encryption techniques, Skype would not be able to comply with such a request.”

It goes even further:

“The upshot is that if Yahoo, AOL, Microsoft, or so on received a wiretap order for text or voice flowing through their IM networks, they could (and would) be able to comply because the services are centralized. Even if the users’ conversations are encrypted through the Off-the-Record Messaging protocol, an eavesdropper still knows who’s talking to whom–this is called a pen register or trap and trace device in wiretapping parlance, and it can still be privacy-invasive.

Skype says it doesn’t permit even that. Which means that it’s the most privacy-protective mainstream method of communicating through voice or instant messaging.”

The question is whether or not governments will allow this to continue or if they will try to force Skype to implement some sort of backdoor.

Well it was about time that Skype (Google) came out with there unlimited calling plans. I was waiting for this for a long time. All of our siblings live in Canada, so you can imagine the long distance bills we were getting each month. For a while I managed to cut down the phone bills since by using a VoIP calling card with tel3advantage. But the call quality and reliability was still not good enough. Frequently we would hear echo, calls not going through, always had to go through their 1800 number. But for 3 cents a minute to make a call from the US to Canada, it was worth swallowing the pill and accepting the hit on quality to save on monthly bills.

When Skype (Google) announced their unlimited long distance calling plans from a Skype account to regular land line phones, with Skypeout, that’s when they got me really interested. They have 3 different unlimited calling plans:

1. Unlimited calls to landlines and cell phones in the US and Canada for $2.95/month;

2. Unlimited calls to landlines in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey for $5.95/month. And discounted rates to landlines and cell phones in the rest of Mexico ;

3. Unlimited calls to landlines in 34 countries worldwide for $9.95/month.

So a month ago I went on the NewEgg website and purchased what they call a Skype certified VoIP cordless phone. After a lot of research on different VoIP phones I concluded on the Philips VOIP8411B. It looked pretty slick, nice features, it was a little bit pricey ($119) but considering the fact that I would be saving around $25 on long distance per month it would take little less than 5 months to come even so it was worth the purchase.

So this is how it works: the skype cordless phone can be used without having to boot up your PC. With this phone you can make Skype calls (skype users to skype users), SkypeOut calls (skype users to regular landlines), and regular calls (landline to landline). All you need is:

• High speed Internet connection (DSL or cable);
• Router or Modem Router;
• 1 Free LAN port;
• Skype account (free sign up).

It took me 15 minutes to install. You connect the base station to your modem or modem router, another connection goes to your regular land line phone jack and of course one connection to power. The cool thing is that you can set the handset anywhere in your house close to a power jack (far from the base station if desired). Once the handset is powered-on it searches for its network (connects to the base station) and asks you to sign-in the same way you would sign-in to your skype account on a pc. Once signed in you go through a couple of basic setting steps and then retrieves you’re skype contacts if any. And voila you are ready to make calls. So here is my take on this phone:

pros:

• easy to install;
• nice color lcd display;
• different ringtones;
• great call quality;
• built-in skype software;
• automatic update (if necessary);
• good range between the handset and the base station;
• can use the phone (landline or skype) without the need to turn my pc on;

cons:

• weak speakerphone;
• can’t set the line preference (landline or skypeout) for programmed phone numbers in memory;

My wife and I have been using this phone for over a month now and we are still very pleased with it. In average we make 2 to 3 long distance calls a day and so far no dropped calls, crisp clear conversations with the handset. We basically dedicated the Skype phone for our outgoing long distance calls (you can still receive regular local calls on it) and our other regular phone for outgoing landline calls.

On last thought: A nice advantage about all this setup is the fact that if the Skype phone is in use for a long distance call, it is not keeping your regular land line busy. So basically you have two independent lines. You can talk as long as you want on the skype phone (only on outgoing long distance call with Skypeout or incoming/outgoing Skype call) and still not miss/send a call from your regular land line phone!
