If I were to grade this year’s christmas celebrations, out of the past 2 years (as far as I choose to remember) of christmas, this would be the worst. I would it give it a 6/10. And that’s not it. Christmas is not supposed to be 6 out of 10. IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE 10 OUT OF 10.

Why? Because it is a day of celebration, of joy, of love. The day itself is love.

If you have a different opinion, please blow up the comments or buy the shoes I diss so I can take a picture of you and laugh. I’ll piss myself if someone I know buys the Yodas!

The X-Wing, quite possibly my favs for how mellow they are. I could imagine a cute boy rocking these out:

The Darth Vader ones (ew, seriously? Some 8 year kid might be stoked? Not me, even NB looks better than these, I don’t care if they took elements from the Vader costume and incorporated them into the design. NOT COOL):

The Princess Leia (I wouldn’t rock it, mostly cuz I couldn’t find something to match, but I think it might look good on a dude in jeans. I do like the hi-top)

The Star Wars Micropacer (Micro = small = made for children. I’ve seen this shoe already on the feet of 5 year olds, who don’t even know what Star Wars is. Like maybe SpongeBob has the same style. I only like the silver plate on the bottom)

The Millennium Falcon (…so….. white sneakers with a blue label. Easy sell. Low key. I’d totally buy them just for chillin’. Rain is gonna happen though folks. Or you probably have a friend who steps on new white shoes. Carry an eraser with you to keep them white!)

The Forum Mid At-At. (The big robot things they drive that walk.) I dig the strap across the top. They kinda look like skate shoes, ala Globe, great ankle support. Kick flip anyone?

The SkyWalker (Points for making the SKYwalker a HIGH-top. But ORANGE??? Come on now, if this shoe was any other color – or perhaps a basic color – I think it would sell better than ORANGE. There’s not a lot to be said for words that nothing rhymes with.)

The Fighter (I like it cuz it looks like a jazzed up version of the classic Converse All Star. It would be cool if those side panels were rubber and, instead of printed lines, were actually 3-D like the bottom tread. I would buy them instead of a new pair of Chucks. Adidas, that’s your new selling point? You invented the new Chuck? They even have the circle on the side!):

Last, and least, The Yoda. This style of sneaker is not what Adidas is loved for, and by far the ugliest ones of the collection. I suppose, Yoda is the ugliest main character, so it’s fitting. Doesn’t he wear a burlap potato sack? Is that what they’re made from? FAIL. Leave the people who do this shoe right to making them cuz this one looks like shit. Camo colors? What kinda guy is gonna buy these? Please don’t introduce me.

I know what you’re thinking. Forgetting a few people??

What about the Chewy x Adidas? Would they make them out of fun fur? I’d really like to have some R2D2 metallic ones that actually have a lazer in them, or with a hologram button!! Or maybe metallic gold C3PO ones for Cresencio? Come on Adidas, if you’re gonna do a collab, you better do the whole shebang! Furry little EWOK shoes? Or maybe this season is only Return of the Yedi.

One side of me thinks – ADIDAS – seriously, can you not be more creative? Star Wars came out 33 years ago. It’s over. It’s gimmicky. It’s fucking played out man. There are a thousand rad artists that could make those shoes look awesome and ORIGINAL.

The other side is – OOOOOHHH so you wanna capitalize on a classic to get your millions. Almost everyone I know has seen Star Wars, and it’s made over 4 billion, and that’s just at the box office. I wonder how much profit they have to split with George Lucas? Everyone has a favorite character, and now maybe they wanna get the shoes too. There’s so much HYPE. HYPE = $$$ (well, not always, smarty pants)

It comes down to cool shoes – yes or no? If you get them – which ones do you get? Definitely a conversation starter. (Cuz I’m SO ragging on you if you get the Yoda ones!)

PS – While we’re at it, go read the Wired review of Family Guy’s new Star Wars spoof, Something Something Something Dark Side and try to download it somewhere. I watched it already and it’s great. (So you should too, theoretically.) Stewy is Vader and the Dark Side is Gay. Worth the hunt to watch it.

oh and PPS – They are doing another one in 2010. (Yay!)

If they ever built any suburbs on Tatooine I’d imagine they would look a lot like this.

Why there was this big gulp when I saw it. Why I no longer wanted to watch my drama episode anymore, even more so cause it was having a sad period. Why flashbacks are coming in and I do not know what to do anymore. Christmas is coming, but.. why is Christmas so sad this year?

It was my father’s birthday yesterday, it was the greatest birthday we celebrated for him, I felt.
There was the dinner at Long Beach restaurant, followed by a not so nice stroll along East Coast. It was nice, spending time. I liked it, enjoyed it a lot.

Today, I got a new phone for Christmas. And it left me ever so frustrated. I do not know how to use it!
And then my aunt got me a new wallet, followed by the mouse that my uncle gave me.

Alright, I think I am going to go for some mini-christmas shopping tomorrow by myself. I wanna get gifts.

God, I’m so urgh right now. I’m upset, and things earlier was crazy. Please help me control myself better. Amen.

You always see people walking around your local high street with a picture of Yoda’s face with some sunnie’s on and a set of head-phones. Now your gonna see them walking around the street with some Star Wars inspired Adidas trainers.

In recent years Adidas have released some beautifully crafted shoes with collections such as the awesome AdiColor, but now they’ve turned to the darkside (yes….that’s right, I made THAT PUN) – and how can we forget the New Era hat series too… Star Wars has always been rad.

The year is soon to be over and in the coming months of 2010 Adidas will be releasing some special trainers with some familiar figures and colours to people. The Star Wars x Adidas Originals Collection is a pretty big range with three different categories of sneakers, they are: the Character pack, the Vehicle pack and the Direct pack.

Now your Character pack will feature all the ‘ol favorites such as Yoda, Vada and the Storm Trooper – out of the series of pics I’ve seen, has to be the ‘Skywalker’ and the ‘Yoda’ one’s that stand out the best. The Apparel too is insane, goodbye to your boring TK Maxx brought Storm Trooper tee and hellow to an Adidas logo’d eye’d Darth Vader shirt.

After having defended the virtues of galactic representative government, now I get to have fun with why the Republic and especially the Jedi had it coming.

1.) The Republic was no democracy.

When Obi-Wan Kenobi is breaking up with Anakin at the end of Revenge of the Sith, he yells, “what about your allegiance to the Republic? To democracy?” It’s a nice appeal to patriotism and emotion but it’s quite clear the Republic is not a democracy. It’s a confederacy of systems and worlds, some but not all of which are democracies. We know Queen Amidala was an elected monarch, but what about the Organas of Alderaan? Alderaan’s monarchy seems clearly hereditary and not to point fingers but after being inexplicably vaporized to make a point one wonders if billions of Alderaaneans might have legitimately questioned whether the risks undertaken by the Organas in their name were ultimately worth it.

In, Clone Wars, we see worlds that are oligarchic or monarchical and even on enlightened Naboo, the sentient Gungans were perennially excluded not just from their planetary government but galactic representation as well.

Galactic aristocrat, Senator Amidala laments the demise of liberty with “thunderous applause,” but ultimately the trillions of lifeforms represented by the Galactic Republic might’ve had more of an attachment to their “democracy” and “liberty” if they had actually had it in the first place.

2.) The Jedi were lawless d-bags.

Yes, they were. I mean does anyone actually like Obi-Wan Kenobi? Or Mace Windu for that matter?

The Jedi basically started the Clone Wars, they have no respect for things like planetary neutrality, local laws, due process, or rules of engagement. They kill when they feel like it. They trespass and destroy or steal property expediently and with no remorse. Not to mention they’ll shameless use the Force to overpower your will whenever it suits them. You know what, we have a word for that. It’s called rape.

In Phantom, Qui-Gon Jinn rigs a dice roll and frankly thank makes him suspect in about every other calamity in the subsequent podrace. In Attack of the Clones, Obi-Wan and Anakin are arrested for trespassing and then indiscriminately kill Genosians on their own homeworld. In Revenge, as much as we know Darth Sidious/Palpatine is actually evil, the Jedi actually do extra-judiciously and semi-secretly try to arrest, then kill a sitting leader of the Republic. Prior to the undertaking, the only person to register this as potentially problematic is Yoda, who is characteristically vague in stating his concerns.

Most damning, however, is the bar scene in Attack of the Clones. After shamelessly mind-raping controlling a simple deathstick merchant, Kenobi just slices off a person’s arm or hand in the middle of a crowded bar and abducts them. Skywalker, menacingly warns patrons, “Jedi business, go back to your drinks.” Nobody complains. No Gloria Allred type character runs out threatening a lawsuit. Nobody films the nascent Rodney King moment.

Granted the audience has seen this before (it’s kind of Kenobi’s MO) in Mos Eisley, a city on an outer-rim wasteland – Tatooine – described as, “a hive of scum and villany.” Yet this instance occurred brazenly in the galactic capital.

What is most chilling and telling is that the passersby are either so accustomed to this kind of casual brutality that it’s unremarkable or they’re so terrified of the Jedi no one will say anything.

Later in the movie, Skywalker jokes about “aggressive negotiations” which is clearly a euphemism for intimidating people like galactic mafia enforcers. All of this is occurs before the start of the Clone Wars and the curtailment of civil liberties alluded to in Revenge.

3.) Monopolies are the true villains .

Blah, blah, the Sith, blah.

Look the true villains in Star Wars are monopolies in politics, police action, and economics. The all-powerful Republic has no checks and balances to speak of. A simple majority vote passes all legislation and can remove and replace the Chancellor. We know, from Revenge, that the Senate has given Palpatine unspecified war powers and allowed him to extend his stay in office. What we can infer from this, is that for all intents and purposes, the galaxy is ruled by a majority in the Senate which may or may not reflect an actual majority of the Republic’s citizens. No frakking wonder, systems left by the thousands to join up with Dooku after living under this kind of majoritarian tyranny for generations.

We’re also told and shown the unrelenting evil that the commerce guilds are. They are, however, precisely because they’re state-protected cartels and monopolies. Much like the 19th century’s Bank of the United States, the political power of the demos has created a publicly supported private corporation that can then independently use its resources and wealth to actively lobby against the public interest and engage in price gouging and armed occupation without limit or license.

Finally, not only do the Jedi represent an extra-legal monopoly of state police power, the Jedi Council lacks any kind of oversight. Is there any doubt that without meaningful oversight, they’d grow arrogant, foolhardy, and routinely make questionable decisions, like asking Skywalker to spy on his surrogate father, starting a war with the Confederacy, and under-resourcing their battle against the Sith. Or, for that matter, not making any contingency plans for the survivability of the order.

4.) Peace through weakness.

By not maintaining a standing army, they made the creation of one a necessarily belligerent act that substantially weakened the Republic’s ability to control the commerce guilds, secure trade routes, and later negotiate with the Confederacy (Separatists). Maybe they thought they’d save money, maybe they sought peace dividends, either way they were unprepared and insecure, which undoubtedly affected relations and sentiments with regards to the various crises we see in Episodes I and II.

You can thank my uncle, David Carothers, for this little piece of geek kitsch. He gave it to me. I am the proud owner of an actual piece of Luke Skywalker’s home planet. You know, the place where he lived when he whined like a dork about power converters.

I’ve been studying the whole day, half an hour since I woke up, till around 5. So that’s been 7.5 hours with little intervals like 15 minute breaks, to read New Moon.

Though I have gone fishing properly, my strongest memory of fishing is of a sketch from Sesame Street when Ernie and Bert go fishing where Bert, ever the realist, fishes with his pole while Ernie shouts for his fish.

Spoiler alert: Bert, using conventional methods, catches no fish while Ernie coaxes dozens to jump into the boat simply by calling for them.

Ernie’s fishing tactics remind me of Jesus’ words in today’s Gospel. While they didn’t cry fish in a crowded movie-house, both Ernie and Jesus used their words to not only get people’s attention, but also to attract who they wanted to. Though yesterday I wrote about the importance of our actions backing up our words, today I’d like us to remember the of our words.

“It’s not what you said, it’s how you said it.” “Say what?” “Could you say that again?” “Don’t speak to me that way.” “Speak up!” “Did you hear what he said?” “I just called to say I love you.” “Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street?”

That ye olde phrase “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me” is a load of crap that even our child-selves recognized the first time we heard it. Words can hurt or heal, and remember young Skywalker, what you say will lead to who you catch.

MST is in a week, and I know, I can freaking do it.

Had a talk with skywalker, and though there are a lot of things that I want to say, I find it hard to.
It won’t get through, I don’t understand his logic either. It’s stupid, really.

The full length trailer for Family Guy’s Empire Strikes Back parody Family Guy: Something, Something, Something, Dark Side premieres today on iTunes and YouTube. Interestingly, the trailer is shot for shot remake of the original trailer from the 1980 classic The Empire Strikes Back. Here’s hoping it has a few more jokes than the first offering- movie references will only get you so far.

Hooray! This week, Clone Wars decided to be a cartoon again (albeit a rather scary one). And not only was it not a WWII-era bloodfest, it actually featured genuinely heroic moments. Double hooray!

The “Legacy of Terror” set up: Jedi Luminara is captured by zombie aliens and Jedis Skywalker and Kenobi take a platoon of clones into the spooky caves to save her.

Heroic moments:

• Jedis Luminara and Mundi express their regret over the clones who have died in the campaign.
• As Jedi Ahsoka leaves the battlefield, she expresses her regret that the clones must remain and continue fighting.
• When the Jedi fall back from their first encounter with the zombies, the Jedi guard the doorway and make sure their troopers escape first.
• When the clone messengers are attacked, the Jedi go running to save them.

Other points of Excellence:

• The annoying sidekicks were sent away, putting Skywalker and Kenobi center stage, which is really the only relationship worth watching.
• The animators and director get full marks for creating a horror setting in the caves. Scenes are dark, illuminated only by the troopers’ helmet lamps, and when the zombies attack, they are creepy in a broken-puppet sort of way. I was frequently reminded of Aliens, and that is high praise.

And judging from the preview of the next episode, they will be continuing the horror theme with more alien zombie possession. Unfortunately, it will feature the sidekicks.

That’s all! I hope the aberrations of “Point Rain” and “Factory” were only that: aberrations.
