Tateru Nino who is a SL writter for SL Massively has published interesting statistics relating to the scale of Second Life.

Approximately 1,250 text-based messages are sent every second in Second Life. That’s 108 million messages per day and more than 600 million words are typed on an average day.

Wow that’s alot of messages and words.

Roughly 60% of active Second Life Residents are based outside of the US, representing more than 200 countries, and the Second Life Viewer is available in 10 languages.

That’s interesting that only 60% are based outside of the US. 10 languages is great and room for more in the future.

In total, users around the world have spent more than 1 billion hours in Second Life. That’s roughly 115,000 years spent doing everything from meeting and socializing with friends; to attending live concerts; to creating, selling, and shopping for virtual goods

SL rocks

The total land area of Second Life is now equivalent to approximately 2 billion square meters – roughly the size of the state of Rhode Island.

Giggles, hasn’t it grown alot over the years. Interesting image!

More than 18 billion minutes of voice chat have been used in Second Life since voice was introduced in 2007. More than 6 billion minutes of voice have been delivered in 2009 alone.

Wowwww

Users create more than 250,000 new virtual items every day. There are now more than 270 terabytes of content in Second Life, and this is growing by approximately 100% every year.

Yay, for SL content and storage. LOL

The average session length (time between login and logout) is given as 100 minutes per visit.

I spend alot more than 100 minutes in-world these days. When I joined SL it was like 15 minutes or so, but that was when I was a newbie. HAHA

My Keynotes from Dusan Writer’s blog post on Accenting the Positive: Mark Kingdon Reveals Growth Targets for Second Life.

Mark Kingdon (M Linden) releases details on new metrics and targets for Second Life for 2009.

Mark Kingdon visits Europe.

Mark Kingdon outlined plans to overhaul the Second Life viewer by the end of 2009.

We’re working on the new user experience to make SL more accessible to more people

When Kingdon joined last May, the maximum was 60,000. “It’s 86,000 now,” he says, “and we’re projecting that it will be 100,000 concurrent by the end of the year.

Stability is key, the first hour is everything, and yes, we’re making money.

I’d like to see a Second Life that, instead of 640,000 active users – today’s figure – has 6 million active users.

Linden Lab is now aiming to build on this enthusiasm for communications

There’s been a huge amount of interest in Second Life as a collaboration and learning tool

By the end of the year, we’ll have our first release of the new viewer. This is a very big redesign effort, and we’re putting a lot of time and money behind the viewer.

We’re trying to add new features to the website so that it’s more useful to people.

On stability: “In the second half of last year, we cut the time lost to stability by half. And I think we’ll do that again in the first half of this year.”

This sounds really interesting on what Mark Kingdon said during his speech and it sounds that there will be exciting changes heading our way soon in Second Life, which is great news for both Linden Lab and Second Life residents. We will see how it plans out over the upcoming months etc!

Greetings!

Our website will have some downtime on Saturday, March 21st, 2009. We’re moving RabbitStats to a new host and will need some time when the website is inaccessible while this change takes place.

No changes will be needed to in-world collectors, they will find the new server on their own. We will do our best to make sure that there are no in-world interruptions while this is happening and that no data will be lost. (You just won’t be able get to our website!)

Why are we doing this? We haven’t hit the limits of what our current hardware can handle, but we’re being proactive and getting ready for the future. A little planned downtime now is better than a lot of unplanned downtime in the future.

We’ll post on the blog as we work. This will be a fairly large undertaking… the downtime is expected to be a few hours, but there’s no way to know for sure until we actually start migrating.

Thanks for using RabbitStats!

We are pleased to announce that basic RabbitStats accounts are now free!

A basic account is like a premium account, but with two major changes – you are limited to three collectors, and there are ads on the website and in the nightly email reports. A list of the different accounts we offer is available on our website.

It has been a little over a year since we launched the RabbitStats service. During that time we have learned a whole lot and listened to feedback from you, our customers. It is our goal to allow anyone to have access to quality information on their Second Life virtual world property, and we hope this new pricing structure helps to meet that goal. It’s been a crazy year!

A big thank you to our testers while working on this. We couldn’t have done it without you!
