I don’t get ranty and sweary on this blog often. I do elsewhere, but not here largely because a) SL is fun for me therefore not rant-worthy 99% of the time, and b) I try to keep my potty-mouth to a minimum on this blog as people read it at work, etc. But every once in a while I like to let rip and the BBC’s crappy coverage of SL recently coincided with a period at work when some cock of stratospheric levels needed a kick in the teeth I could not provide. This irked me. I took that irkedness and poured it all over the BBC spooge-fest like bad gravy. I then moved on, my bile duct once more drained of essential juices, and forgot all about it.

Until now. A pingback from a blog about shrinks in SL sneering down on all that have the brass neck to get angry at something they hadn’t sanctioned as rage-worthy. Having failed to ensure I had my Anger (Acceptable Targets Of & Reasons For) 399c Form stamped by the relevant authorities I fear I may have compounded my heinous error by enjoying having a good old screaming session, bellowing like a wounded elk mooing into the abyss of a godless death. I imagine.

I agonised (well I considered it for a minute whilst looking for a biscuit) over whether to allow the pingback comment or just bin it, but as I’m in the mood for another rant (and, more importantly bloody short of anything write about at the moment – my scheduled posts section is emptier than a eunuch’s boxers) I thought I’d drop the offended article a comment and then copy it here to make up a post and buy me some time until I can write some real stuff up. Phew! That BBC story is paying dividends, I can tell you! I hope someone else slags off SL soon or I’m fucked.

To answer your question why I went all foamy mouth Britney guy, well quite simply for the fun of it. I took a load of crappy crappola from work and transferred it to that instead. Oh, and I like swearing. Really like it. My post has no more depth than a puddle of water and the same amount of validity as your own.

So cheer up! Look on the bright side! Good old Aunty gave us both something to blog about and fill the emptiness of our lives with one more post. Although mine was, I’m sure you’ll agree, far more sweary. And funnier.

Oh, and I’ll bite at the end – who are you to say what I should get angry about. I’m guessing there’s a ton of stuff that wouldn’t make me blink but would push your buttons just how you like it. You seem a smart fella doing a clever-sounding post about whatever it is it’s about – don’t end on a dumb note like that. Or at least put some swearing in to drive home the point you’re sneering at me – come on, add some conviction to your sneers man!

In the 2. Didactic Design Discussion in the MIL course I’d chosen to focus on some of the central points from my own PhD-project since it also deals with analysis of SL as teaching and learning environment. Discussing some of my own ideas with the students naturally is very inspiring and rewarding for me personally, but I’m also hoping (and sensing) that the students benefit from seeing my approach to the problem, and judging from the vivid discussion I do believe, I managed to challenge some of their presumptions. I’m not able to reproduce all of it, but I will try to highlight a few issues.

Essentially my PhD-project is aimed at improving Blended Learning within Higher and Further Education through remediation and redidactization. Through a process of designing and redesigning two specific Blended Learning courses within 6 research cycles the aim is to enhance learner experience and learning outcome by using new immersive 3D media and a learner centered Problem Based pedagogical approach. In both cases the target group is adult teachers/ trainers from the educational and the private/industrial sector from different countries.

PhD-project overview – Fall 2009

The concept remediation (in relation to new media) was coined by Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin (2000), but there was no explicit value or quality identified with different ways of remediating in the original concept. However, Tringham, Mills and Ashley (2007) further developed the remediation concept in their Remediated Places Project and came up with two distinct strategies for remediation, respectively respectful and radical. In my point of view these two strategies can be extended to include pedagogical considerations and thus inform more general implementation strategies for blended teaching and learning using new media.

I first introduced the MIL students to the concepts of respectful and radical remediation in the course last fall and like this year’s students they immediately adopted the terminology. If you’ve ever been in SL you’d know why – it makes perfect sense to distinguish between the two both with regard to people, places and practices. The interesting question nonetheless is whether remediation changes anything in the way we think and practice teaching and learning …

Is a slide show presentation in SL an innovation?

According to Peter Denning an innovation can be defined as a transformation of practice in a group, community or culture – it is not enough just to come up with a brilliant idea or create a new artifact. Surely there are many different definitions of innovation, but I agree with Denning and it aligns very well with Wenger’s 1998 social theory on Communities of Practice, which is one of my core inspirations. Changing practice is easier said than done and Steven Warburton has identified 7 barriers to innovation in 3D environments like SL:

Technical – machine and human related [and standards related]

Identity – the tension between playfulness and professionalism

Culture - reading the codes and etiquette of SL

Collaboration – building trust

Time – even simple things take time 

Economic – nothing is for free

Design – perhaps this is a meta-barrier but SL does offer up very particular design challenges

Besides these I would add another meta-barrier, namely the inherent paradox between (re-)production and innovation that all participants in education are facing. This is what I call the didactic double bind. In general double bind is described as dilemmas in communication, and SL seems to be filled with conflicting messages. After the session one of the students posted this photo as her take on a in-world double bind:

The text for that photo could read: ”SL is an open environment. Join us if you can”. Naturally, the experienced SL resident would know that the dilemma in this particular situation is metaphorical – a shift in camera angle and you’d be there… the perspective on the situation would change and shifting perspective, looking at dilemmas at a higher level of abstraction is one way of solving double bind situations and would according to Bateson. 1972 mean learning at level III. And this is actually one of the reasons why I find SL so interesting – if we assume that the learner overcomes the initial difficulties and gets accustomed to the environment it provides rich opportunities for learning at higher levels, because SL inevitable challenges the learner both ontologically and epistemologically due to the whole meta-cognitive nature of the in-world experience.

After this we moved on to discuss the concepts of immersion and augmentation and what these two apparently conflicting ways of engaging in an environment like SL could mean – not least when it comes to teaching and learning practice. Again the students were eager to discuss and we covered a lot of important points on which I will return in a later posting. Suffice to say that we all agree with Tateru Nino on this:

It’s not all black and white.
The whole immersion versus augmentation debate is clouded by one trivial little detail. One is not the opposite of the other. The two aren’t even mutually exclusive.

We ended the session by trying out the Opinionater – it really is a very efficient and fun tool for stimulating discussions

Hui, wie die Zeit vergeht… das wird ja schon einer der letzten Testberichte…

Zu Beginn mal wieder zu den Ausführungszeiten: beim Öffnen und Schließen von CFD-Positionen hänge ich noch immer bei 5-8 Sekunden (ich traue mich gar nicht von gefühlten 10 und mehr Sekunden zu sprechen, da ich nicht jede Order tatsächlich mit der Uhr stoppe). Warum hat das Tuning der anderen Instrumente so gut funktioniert, während die CFDs immer noch lahmen?  Die Zeiten bei Indizes und Währungspaaren liegen wie gehabt bei 1-3 Sekunden.

Freitag Nachmittag gabs dann wohl einen Fehler/ Problem im System!? Ich konnte über den Zeitraum von 15 Minuten weder SL/ TP ändern, noch eine vorhandene CFD-Position schließen. Entweder kam die Meldung “Trade Kontext besetzt” (der erst nach einem Metatrader-Neustart wieder frei wurde), oder das Dialogfenster blieb einfach beim Bearbeiten der Order hängen.

Da ich mit dieser Position weder noch mal im Minus landen, noch diese übers Wochenende halten wollte, hab ich mal vom Telefonsupport Gebrauch gemacht.
Nachdem der Support sich von der Korrektheit meiner Bedienung mittels Netviewer-Session überzeugt hatte, und der Fehler nicht auf die Schnelle gefunden werden konnte, haben wir SL und TP telefonisch angepasst. Die Änderung war dann auch sofort im Metatrader zu sehen. So weit, so gut.

Ein paar Minuten später war mein modifizierter TP dann erreicht. Eine offene Long-Position, die zum (im Chart standardmäßig angezeigten) Bid-Preis von 33.60 geschlossen werden sollte. Aber nichts passierte – außer dass die TP-Spalte gelb hinterlegt war. 33.60… 33.58… 33.62… 33.61… nichts.
Und es war jetzt nicht ein “Flimmern” des Kurses, wo man den TP mal für einen kurzen Augenblick aufblitzen sah – die Bar von 16:35 in der M1-Ansicht hat sogar bei 33.61 geschlossen.

Erst 16:36 wurde das TP bei einem Bid-Preis von 33.62 wie ursprünglich gewünscht zu 33.60 geschlossen.

Das war nicht das erste Mal, dass TP/SL “etwas eigenartig” ausgelöst wurden. Hier würde ich mir eine (Er-)Klärung wünschen.

Ich warte auch noch auf eine Antwort zu meiner Zwischenfrage bzgl. der „Kurshänger“.
Vielleicht könnten Sie bei der Gelegenheit auch noch klären, warum bei vielen CFDs morgens erst um 09:02 die ersten Kursaktualisierungen kommen. Das war ab und an ärgerlich, weil bei erwarteten steigenden Kursen die Gaps zur Eröffnung (bzw. 2 Minuten danach) dann besonders groß waren.

So, das wars erst mal wieder. Was mich noch interessieren würde: wie lange läuft denn der Test noch diese Woche? Meine Mail zur Handelsfreigabe kam am Mittwoch Nachmittag… also bis einschließlich Mittwoch?

Shedding the Layers

Oh mai!  Time to turn it up a notch in here.  When I saw this dress from Sergio Krasopani of SK Designs, I knew it was time to start shedding the layers.  SK never ceases to amaze me with the perfect detail and flawless seams.  I love his ability to shade the wrinkles and creases and make it look like there truly is a thin layer of fabric falling over my lil’ pixel curves!

It isn’t often that I venture out with my pixel bewbs shamelessly flaunted.  So when I do… I try to cover myself somewhat.  Leave something for the imagination, so they say.  This open front long dress shirt by AOHARU, was perfect for just that, it adds an office tweak to the ensemble, covering my pixels in all the right places!  The newly released wide leather belt from Linc, adds to that formerly formal look.  When paired with the wrapped stilettos from Maitreya Gold, and the masterly messy do from Exile… that “just rolled out of bed” (or into) image is perfectly portrayed!

Blustery Days

Blustery days are something I’m familiar with.  Here, on the coast, we get them fairly often.  Raging winds, violent gusts, horizontal rains, abrupt puffs… the days, when fixing your hair or doing your makeup, is just… pointless.  You wrap up in whatever easy warmth you can find, grab a bag that wont blow away or get ruined by the weather, and make your way out the door.  Or at least that’s my practice.

That’s not to say I don’t enjoy them.  There’s just something about those days, that hits a nostalgic air with me.  Thus, today’s post, is in honor of my hopes, for a blustery day in the near future.  I’ve pieced together a simple look, that could be taken to both worlds, something easy to toss together and basic.  My favorite piece is this bag from Gritty Kitty, I would not hesitate to carry this around in real life, and the same, here in SL.  The detail is just amazing, its hard not to want to put it with every outfit.  Once again, Surf Couture wows me with their footwear… snug sweater boots, they come in many colors, and… if that’s not it, the sock portion (medium grey in the photo) changes colors by script, to match any outfit!  I fell in love with this jacket sweater from KiiToS!! the moment I saw it… these are a staple in my wardrobe, easy to match, easy to wear, easy to please.  The new sweater dress from Linc, comes in many shades, and, like most Linc products, shows plenty of skin if needed, but also layers up quite nicely.  Minimal modifications were needed to make the collars lapse correctly, it really did all fall into place.  Linc also has these long underwear/tights out, with a cute detailed knit texture, they could complete any winter look.  I matched the tights with the hat from epoque which I am in love with, the ear muffs from Artilleri, and these glasses from tres blah.  I was so in love with this hair from !lamb, which I featured yesterday in the blood fruit shade, that I had to go back and get it in blacks, my color of choice <3.

3 years with the NYC Girl named Blissie!

People who wander into our lives are sometimes only there for a short while. Little did I know 3 summers ago, Blissie was not to be one of them. She was there for the long haul.

We met at Rob’s and One World. We just happened upon each other and enjoyed showcasing our inventories of noob-ness on the dance floor. We got good at changing during DJ gigs. We offered everyone gifts from our noobish inventory whether they wanted it or not… drinks, slippers, snacks… and then… Blissie’s trademark cupcakes and love of them made their debut.

She went on vacation for a week that summer in her first life and I missed her like crazy. She had become my partner in crime. How could I do dance floor changes and run amuck without her? When she returned, I pounced her and vowed to never let her go. This NYC girl works like I do. She multitasks and bakes and cleans (like I wish I did). And she is competitive like no one I know except for my husband.

In the photo slide show you’ll see a picture of bullriding. She and Bigd spent many hours at the bull pen next door to One World. I would wake up to find Bigd had been trying to beat Blissie’s score for at least an hour before the rest of us stirred! I’m not sure who won but the competition didn’t stop there.

There were wardrobe challenges. The poor girl once wore a whole folder… her ENTIRE inventory… at once at Robs! I laughed until I cried. We pillow fought and wore spankers. Any new gadget seemed to find its way to us and Spanksgiving was born.

We built at Burning Life. Well… Borday built and we watched. Then we rebuilt while Borday swore. (Problems with land rights in BL). We wandered. We went on Sunday field trips. Blissie always warned people she was armed and warned me she didn’t make friends with just anyone. That was my job. She would rescue me from busrides across Burning Life and scary guys on dance floors.

We partnered to save each other from crazy gropey boys. Then I shamefully unpartnered because I was building my RL image for work in SL and didn’t want to confuse people… not that there’s anything wrong with that

We’ve had phases and eras. The gesture era. The attachment era. The food era (has that ended?). The club opening event DJ hostessing era. The blogging – profile advice giving era.

In the end it boils down to one thing: time tested friendship and love. She pounces me at work on gmail every once and a while. She includes me in her profile or blog and makes me smile. She dresses up with me and shops and eats and even has pot-roast-cooking-contests. But… no matter where our paths go, they always lead back to the thing that brought us together in the first place.

Her heart is huge. She is a fierce defender of things. She loves taking pictures of herself as much as I do and she is an incredible ALT finder. She never hides. She just is.

Both lives make us remember what is important sometimes even when we don’t want to. Blissie’s RL is hard right now. While I know I can’t make things better, I can remind her how much I appreciate her in my life. First and Second… imaginary or not… my world is better for knowing Bliss. Cheers Gypsy Woman from NYC!

*A brief introduction to this: I laid in bed this morning knowing this was my next blog.  I rolled it around 10 times over in my head and just knew it was what I would write about. Some things just feel that important.  I will do a series.  I am not sure in what order or how frequently because I cannot be disciplined with my blog like I should or wish I could.  But over the next few weeks, I will profile for you the imaginary friends who make up my SLife*. I realize they are not imaginary and so do they.  That is simply a term that a friend and colleague of mine coined one day.

Many have touched my life in the past 3+ years Second Life has wandered into my day to day existance.  Some become household names and are forced to say hello to all my Real Life household names. They are fiesty and crazy and fun.  They are people I might pass on the street in the real world and never know.  They are people who wandered into my Second Life and are important to me.  They are the friendships that make being a mom of 4 and a wife and a crazed working woman possible.

So… without further ado…  Here comes my series.
