El G-20, la crisis económica, las elecciones estadounidenses son fenómenos que están opacando estos días la actualidad informativa. Es día 4 y Estados Unidos descansa antes de una jornada de votaciones y urnas repletas que sacudirán el mundo por completo. ¿Ganará Obama? ¿Ganará McCain? Son algunas de las preguntas más escuchadas esta mañana en la radio, sin embargo, yo me pregunto: ¿Dónde está Michael Moore? En 2004 vimos al gordo Moore haciendo de las suyas. Muchos recordamos aún sus denuncias del sistema de elecciones americanas en su libro Estúpidos hombres blancos, su critica sobre la política republicana en aquel famoso Fahrenheit 9/11 o su gira por distintas universidades durante las últimas elecciones grabadas en el reciente documental Slacker Uprising.

Desde la publicación de su último documental en internet el pasado mes de Septiembre, Michael Moore ha aparecido en diversos páginas de prensa y algunos progamas de televisión, tal y como informa la Revista Time en su edición digital. También ha tenido tiempo para escribir sobre la crisis económica, se puede ver la traducción en Contratiempo. Pero es en estos días, en la antesala de las elecciones, cuando las redes americanas y, en especial, su página web personal han alcanzado el punto de ebullición a la espera de algunas palabras del provocador por excelencia.

El momento ha llegado

Anoche el gordo Moore publicaba una carta sobre las elecciones en su página personal. En la carta denuncia los ataques del candidato republicano a Barack Obama: “McCain solo ha acertado en una cosa: Obama es el senador más liberal de los Estados Unidos” Para Moore Obama es el candidato ideal y lo compara -con las resonancias que ello tiene- con Edward “Ted” Kennedy, hermano de JFK, y se pregunta “¿cuándo tendremos la oportunidad de llevar al senador más liberal de los Estados Unidos a la Casa Blanca?“.

Michael Moore cree que “ocho años son suficientes” y siente la necesidad de unas votaciones masivas: “cada voto es crítico“, aún escuece la victoria «in extremis» de los republicanos en 2004. Michael Moore espera que la era Reagan muera” tras estas elecciones, por ello insta a sus compatriotas a ir a las urnas para “hacer ruido” y dar la oportunidad a Obama “devolver el país a nosotros, el pueblo“.

Slacker Uprising est le dernier documentaire de Michael Moore, vous savez, celui qui est gratuit. Enfin, oui, enfin! Michael Moore fait un film sur lui. Pour être précis, nous suivons Michael durant son Slacker Uprising Tour qui précèda les élections de 2004. Ce qui m’a toujours dérangé avec lui, c’est que ses films me donnent toujours l’impression d’être légèrement manipulé. Il laisse la voix adverse s’exprimer suffisament pour que l’on ne puisse pas lui reprocher de ne pas le faire, mais bon, il est tellement engagé qu’il n’arrive pas à prendre du recul. Sachant ça, on ne peut pas reprocher à ce film de suivre la même route.

Donc, Michael nous a concocté un film qui parle de la campagne 2004, mais qui est suffisament bien monté pour que l’on puisse oublier la date et avoir l’impression qu’il s’agit de 2008. Les thèmes des deux campagnes étaient assez semblables, jusqu’à ce que la crise économique ne devienne le problème principale de la planète.

On a donc éxactement ce que l’on pouvait attendre du réalisateur que l’on soit fan ou pas, on ne peut pas être surpris et c’est ça le principal problème, car ça finit par devenir assez plat. Le montage est parfaitement maitrisé, les qualités cinématographiques sont là, mais bon, voilà, ça n’est pas captivant.

Ce qui aurait été bien, c’est que Moore se concentre moins sur lui, qu’il ne se mette pas autant dans le rôle de la victime. C’est sur, le film est sur lui, mais c’est aussi sur une campagne qui fut perdu pour les démocrates et, à part quelques scènes au départ, la raison de cette défaite n’est pas approfondie. C’est là dessus qu’il aurait dû s’arrêter, pas sur sa propre personne délivrant en continue le même message.

Heureusement, durant certains meetings, nous avons droit à d’autres guests. Le meilleur étant bien entendu la petit pause musicale d’Eddie Vedder, enfin, je n’aurais pas dit le contraire comme vous vous en doutez.

Vous l’aurez compris, c’est gratuit, alors il n’y a pas de raisons de se priver, mais ça manque quand même pas mal d’intérêt. En s’arrêtant après le premier discours, on a presque tout entendu. Le reste, on va dire que c’est une compilation d’anecdotes. Certaines sont bonnes, d’autres moins.

I watched the new Michael Moore movie last night.  A travelogue of highlights from his 62 stop tour of colleges in 2004 to try to get John Kerry elected.  The film concentrates on the one month period leading up to the election.  It seems longer than four years ago. 

He bucks the trend in his last couple films of limiting his appearances ["A little of me goes a long way"] — this one is mostly Michael speaking to crowds.  He gets pretty intense and animated at times.  Very poignant moments with parents who lost children in Iraq.   My favorite scene was from a Seattle press conference where a reporter asks, “Are your movies propaganda?” and he patiently explains that the mainstream press were the progpagandizers, cheerleading the administration during the rush to war — and he exists to counter them!  He really lambastes them for violating the public trust.  Powerful and relevant and everything to do with how the MSM has been improverished the last five or six years.  They’d better get it together soon.

We’re reminded that Kerry did very well with the youth vote in 2004 ["the only age group he won"].  The ultimate success of what Moore was doing may well take another few elections to fully realize.  I have a lot of hopes and confidence for the generation in their 20s now.

Watching what the Republicans are doing today, purging the voter rolls in six swing states, one can’t help but relive the crushing misery of the 2000 and 2004 elections.  We have to get such an overwhelming majority out there this time that they cannot steal it again.  The current polls are indicating a landslide, but the electoral college may still be close thanks to Republican dirty pool.

In my ideal world, the Republicans are well on their way to being a permanent minority.  Let’s make it happen, people!

Tonight I dropped off the boys at G-ma and G-pa’s house. LBM is doing quite well with his new ear tubes – a little leakage, but that is a good thing – they are working. LLM is also healthy. It was certainly with mixed feelings that I dropped them off. I do realize I need the time to myself, but I also know I am going away for a whole week next weekend.

So, what I am going to do with myself? First, I have to drop-off Daisy for an extremely needed grooming appointment. Next, I think I am going to go for a bike ride. There is a local “Athletic Club” that gathers mostly for cycling and tomorrow they are doing a 34-mile ride. I am not quite in that kind of shape, but I might see if I can tag along for a little. Finally there is a lot of yard clean that I would love to get done. I have made so much progress this year, I am looking forward to continuing that.

…. watching the Micheal Moore movie called “Slacker Uprising”. It documents his tour of the country leading up to the 2004 Presidential Election. It is amazing to me how much buzz he was able to generate about all the misrepresentation Bush had made and yet Bush still won the election. I really don’t understand why Micheal Moore gets such a bad rap. He cares so deeply for this country and it’s people and our freedoms. It seems like he his keeping a quiet profile this year in hopes of not stirring up the Republican base. It seems to be working – see my next post.

Anyway, this movie is really about his efforts to get people to vote. The movie is not necessarily motivating at this stage, but for me it really illustrates an interesting point. Despite the effort he put in, the voter turnout was still VERY VERY low. I am hoping that this year’s election finally does show a CHANGE in that trend.

Essa afirmação vem sendo feita todos os dias por vários jornalistas e colunistas econômicos em todo país, supostamente especializados no assunto. A aprovação da proposta de ajuda aos bancos quebrados é apontada como uma condição necessária para evitar o caos. Há vários silêncios nesta cobertura, aqui e também nos EUA.
