This is a portion of a slam poem I wrote at the end of the last school year and finished at the begi

This is a portion of a slam poem I wrote at the end of the last school year and finished at the beginning of this school year. It discusses the frustration with the education system as well as certain students who are not taking advantage of the education they are paying for. Regardless if the education system is flawed, we are still paying for it and should use all resources available to us. If you go to class, BE THERE, BE FULLY PRESENT WITH YOUR WHOLE SELF as much as you can. Otherwise, what are you paying for? Why are you here?

by Brooke, blvelasq@ucsc.edu

But you see,
I ain’t got decent sleep in days
It’s been one of those years that tear and tear
Until everything is torn and worn
Like Katrina blasting through-
Destroying everything in her path to spite the unbelievers of global warming
and the ones who’ve misused and abused our Mother-
It’s time for something new
I need to get a fresh view
Get wafts of some clean ocean air
Gaze at stars and stare at clouds
Instead of sitting listening to the same old same old
broken br brrrooken broooken broken broken
record
Repeating something over and over doesn’t improve it
You just end up looking like a parasitical parrot
Simply a puppet playing someone else’s game
No one wins and no one loses
this time around
‘Cause we are all affected
and there are no more prizes to be handed out
in this cyclical circus
because Start and Finish are the same space on the board

And What Are We Paying For?
If class is such a bore
and we would rather snore
and snort and smoke
than listen and learn
What are we paying for?
Yeah- let’s all just
Go to class sit back and relax
myspace it up
facebook slump
text n chat
pick up the slack
and to the Bitch sitting in the row in front:
I don’t want to see you and your slutty drunk friends on Facebook
or you designing some new sneakers on cyberspace
like you got the time and money to blow
‘Cause Daddy’s probably paying tuition and gas for your Mercedes Benz
Please do that shit somewhere other than class
‘Cause
SOME of us our selling our souls to the man
Just to get a chance to take a stand
To make a change
in this patriarchal rich white man’s land

But I WILL give you credit for giving me something to Slam
‘Cause you got me thinking-
What the Hell Are We Paying For?
Some of us are here to learn
It is our turn
to make something of this situation
Why do you think we are at this state funded institution?
This is our nation,
We got to take our station and man our own battle ships!
Our generation has inherited a sick, defected, infected Earth
She is fading fast
Disappearing among smog and smoke
And when did Nature become a side-show attraction?
Something to see on vacation
like a sick twisted circus…

Most of the time, urban forms of art come from US inner city areas better known as the ghettos. It d

Most of the time, urban forms of art come from US inner city areas better known as the ghettos. It develops there, it crosses the Atlantic Ocean, and then it settles in Europe. Hip Hop, Rap, Graffiti, name it. But each time, these forms of art are modified and tamed by European artists. It is especially true for slam poetry.

“In the people’s slam, we bind ourselves and we rhyme because here we love where that rhymes and that lies. But if we splendidly lie to it, this is because we look there for a brightness of diamond verb. The people’s slam is a tiny and alive treasure with sight on the invisible. Simple.” Mourad, the master of ceremonies or MC, gives the start of the local slam session in Nancy (France) with these few rhymes.

This time, the session takes place at the “Haut du Lièvre” – the local banlieue, city outskirts, or as it’s more regularly called: poor suburb.

Several slammers came to the MJC (Maison de la Jeunesse et de la Culture – Youth and Culture Centre) tonight; their aim is to tell you a story, to share some rhymes. Slam is modern poetry and Rap’s little brother. The French Hip Hop movement has always been a strong message carrier, and political or not, those messages come from the most disadvantaged French citizens – most of whom live in banlieues.

A popular means of expression

It’s no coincidence if, in a banlieue like the “Haut du Lièvre”, local non-profit organizations propose Hip Hop dance lessons, graffiti lessons, or open studio sessions. It helps people – especially children and teenagers – to express their feelings, and release both anger and happiness. In other words, these activities help them channel their energy.

Aurore Thiebaut, working for the “Buisson Ardent” – a non-profit organization that was almost born with the neighbourhood -, explains that a tremendous work of assertion is done in those workshops. The youngsters “express many things in their songs,” she says. “These are songs which carry a lot, which tell not to get discouraged, which give advice. It is there that you realize that they are proud and motivated to fight against the problems met in everyday life.”

Tonight at the MJC, Zakkaria – a social working student and young father – is ironic in his slam. “I’m a racist”. He, the French citizen with Maghrebi roots, is a racist. “I hate the Italian, the Spaniard, the Pole, but I love the Frenchman. He is like I”. The public laughs. Salomon pays a tribute to Rap music for all it has been giving to the people who live in the banlieues. “Our art, engraved in the cement, is invincible to the Karcher”.

French slam is not playing by the rules

In the last five years, Slam has become more and more popular in France. Two major artists have emerged from the underground slam scene: Fabien Marsaud, under the alias Grand Corps Malade, and Régis Fayette-Mikano, under the alias Abd al Malik – the name of the 5th Umayyad Caliph who built the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. Both developed their art in the banlieues; both have a message of hope that fights stereotypes.

On the first song of his first record, Grand Corps Malade says: “If we are there today, it is just that we didn’t give up. We looked for the light of dawn by knowing that it had the colour of hope. We armed ourselves with our pens to write our own continuation of all these stories. We have beautiful ones to tell you, even if I imagine that it will be certainly far from your TV news.”

“Even if one of these days in Neuhof [the banlieue of Strasbourg], I become again an emcee at the MJC, criticizing the society, my soil, my feeder country; exceeded to find neither work, nor profession because of a pigment in my skin which I would have, is saying, in excess. Even if it is true that it is strange to feel as a foreigner at home, to feel burning on you the cold of indifference or hatred, to the choice; that all the city’s alleys become again the Stations of the Cross, kinda “Sir: your papers! Sir, what do you want?” Regardless, I know that in the apartment’s room of my tower I would continue to call upon Love…” claims Abd al Malik in one of his most powerful song, “M’effacer” – Erase Myself.

Though, French Slam is not playing by the rules. Slam poetry is supposed to be a cappella, it is supposed to be organized as clashes and competitions with a jury, declamations have to be three minutes long. French artists are breaking the rules by introducing instruments, choruses, or even background noises.

But who cares?

Words that make sense and develop serenity

There is no obligation: a bass, a drum, and a rather funky guitar in accompaniment, or a cappella… Fewer “bitches” or “bling bling” in French Hip Hop and fewer battles or clashes in the French Slam.

A story-teller, a speech that softly lies down, words which make sense. A text shared, a glass offered. An artistic form coming from the urban underworld and adapted by French performers, the Slam performed in Nancy in particular, in France in general, is like that. Simple.

Hankey, the current BDO World Champion, was jeered during a 5-3 loss to Scott Waites in Sunday’s opening fixture, but silenced any critics by taking a 5-4 victory over Wayne Mardle.

He now meets Simon Whitlock in Wednesday’s final group games, although will need to improve his finishing after missing almost 30 doubles against Mardle.

“The crowd were still on my back but I’ve got through it and that’s all that matters,” said Hankey. “I played better than I did on Sunday but I missed too many doubles.”

Alex and Phillipe Haussmann Go On A “2012 Hollywood Red Carpet Ride!”

Alex and Philippe Haussmann are two incredible teen actors and youth raconteurs who were discovered at the Manhattan Monologue Slam and now have break out roles in Roland Emmerich’s “2012″. Groomed and trained by their hard driving talent manager Philip Galinsky, the trio flew to Hollywood for the Red Carpet opening of the film in November. It was a hilarious calamity of percussive personalities, with a message attached, as the teen twins will be representing Lollipop Theater Co. on the Red Carpet.

See video of the trip here:

About the Haussmann twins: The New York twins found their talent manager at the Manhattan Monologue Slam and soon landed a role in Roland Emmerich’s next disaster movie, “2012”. Two days prior to filming in Vancouver for 3 months, the twins lost their home to a house fire leaving them homeless and on the road.
But undeterred by tragedy, Alex and Philippe Haussmann worked with John Cusack, in the blockbuster film 2012. The twins intrigued the film’s director Roland Emmerich, and gave the film their hearts as well as incredible action. Moving forward the boys will be youth ambassadors for the Lollipop Theater Network http://www.lollipoptheater.org, and continue to work on projects that are entertaining and have a philanthropic component.

Manhattan Monologue Slam panelist/judge is the creator and writer of HBO’s new break out succe

Manhattan Monologue Slam panelist/judge is the creator and writer of HBO’s new break out success “Bored to Death”. About “Bored to Death” – Jonathan Ames, a young Brooklyn writer, is feeling lost. He’s just gone through a painful break-up, thanks in part to his drinking, can’t write his second novel, and carouses too much with his magazine editor. Rather than face reality, Jonathan turns instead to his fantasies — moonlighting as a private detective — because he wants to be a hero and a man of action.

The offbeat comedy series ‘Bored to Death,’ created by Jonathan Ames (author of several books, including the acclaimed graphic novel ‘The Alcoholic’), follows the misadventures of a fictional Jonathan Ames as he pursues his quixotic dream of emulating his heroes from classic private detective novels.

‘Bored to Death’ stars Jason Schwartzman (‘The Darjeeling Limited’) as Jonathan Ames; Ted Danson (‘Damages,’ HBO’s ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’) as George Christopher, a high-profile magazine editor and Jonathan’s boss; and Zach Galifianakis (‘The Hangover’) as comic book illustrator Ray Hueston, Jonathan’s confidant. BORED TO DEATH was created by Jonathan Ames; executive producers, Jonathan Ames, Sarah Condon, Stephanie Davis, Dave Becky and Troy Miller; co-executive producer, Tracey Baird; producers, Mark Baker and Anna Dokoza.

Manhattan Monologue Slam Los Angeles Champion Daheli Hall, one of four new cast members to be added during Season 13 of “MADtv,” brings with her an already impressive resume. Daheli is a Manhattan Monologue Slam LA Champion and has earned both a Bachelor of Fine Arts from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and a Master of Fine Arts in Producing for Film and TV from the University of Southern California. Even though Daheli’s body of work is rather small thus far–a couple of short films, a documentary, and a one-woman standup comedy show–her creative abilities are far-reaching. In her brief career, Daheli has quickly established herself as an actor, comic, writer, director, and producer. Judging by these already impressive entertainment credentials, one can easily see why “MADtv” is so eager to have Daheli onboard.
