I don’t know much about art, but I know what I hate. I also don’t know an awful lot about graffiti either – my tagging career stalled through cowardice, a piss-poor handstyle and leaking marker pens annhilating my Karl Kanis. You see, I knew when to stop. Some people just don’t. Perhaps I’m in the minority, but while I’m a hip-hop fanboy, I quickly tired of talk of graffiti as a hip-hop ‘element.’ That’s constrictive bullshit. I prefer my writers to listen to Slayer or Grand Funk Railroad, rather than body-popping to the local legal wall and cloning DOZE characters. That said, I loathe…LOATHE, the new breed of ’street art’ and those inspired to paint weak political statements on walls constructed from GCSE sociology and punchlines from last week’s ‘Have I Got News For You.’ Wheatposting your character in London’s hipster hotspots in the dead-of-night? Getthefuckouttahere. Grow the balls to do a throw-up you fucking coward.

Pochoir, this Cartrain kid …total trash. Kids are out there (misguidedly) risking their lives to make a name for themselves, and the industry shines a light on these jokers? Seriously, put the fucking stencils down. Some loser calls himself ‘The Decapitator,’ chopping the head off ads and he gets shine? Something’s gone terribly, terribly wrong. This clown doesn’t even have to watch for the third rail – all he has to risk is a papercut. But look? Do you see what he did to Shakira, he cut her head off, see? Beyond the physical attributes, Shakira is twenty times the maverick that this Decapitator clown is. Please people. Stop covering this bullshit. My associate Mr. Charlie Morgan hates it more than I do, but his reaction to the current explosion of drivel is unprintable on pixel or paper.

Galleries shouldn’t be the last refuge of failed writers. And to the people that went over Banksy’s ‘DIY Punk’ piece in Sutton, I salute you. That smug creation; tinpot satire mocking tinpot anarchists, needed some damage.

Great stuff.

When it comes to graffiti’s ” real deal,” the likes of Futura earnt their current position through graft, innate skill, practise and good timing. Plus some serious wilderness years. Too many Futura disciples miss the point. Lenny is a great guy and an undisputed legend who deserves his king status, but his approach gets bitten. The copyists and sychophants leeching off his output should follow his mantra, the one that took distinctive imagery and letters to their current point, which isn’t imitation or dickriding, but artistic progression, and one old-school rule that should never have been relegated, quaint as it seems nowadays; no biting.

Those covering Futura’s work would benefit from highlighting the new breed of bombers alongside it, rather than generic muppets who want gallery space from the get-go. Everyone wants to be an art critic, but who’s got enough knowledge to actually criticise anything? I’d sooner see two extremes – prolific destruction or painstaking feats of fine art. I’m not interested in a middleground any more.

But I believe in e-karma. For every hateful outpouring, you’ve got to find something positive to wax lyrical about. This week I finally got round to picking up Tom J. Newell’s ‘Pictoral Showboat.’ That was actually the purpose of this blog entry. I got carried away. After seeing a little preview of Tom’s comic strip work, my interest was piqued by a sly little piece called ‘The Urban Arts Boom’ where he made his point intelligently without resorting to even a third of the above vitriol levels. A UK-based artist and presumed pop culture junkie, Tom’s a decent writer too. Most comic ‘zines fall apart on half arsed jokes, but Tom finds the balance.

Artistically, a spot of Charles Burns and the Hernandez Brothers is visible in the black and white penmanship…it’s like a Fantagraphics release with a British skate mentality – Santa Cruz, Captain Beefheart, DJ Premier, CAP, Mad Magazine and Crosby, Stills & Nash which could easily be the chorus of my very own ‘My Favourite Things’) are all in the mix. Plus there’s a rendering of Inspectah Deck as a duck. Check out Tom’s site here. I’m assuming issue one also acts as a C.V. of sorts, and I hope I see more of his work and a second issue in 2010.

On topic, you’ve gotta love YouTube. Goldie in full swagger mid ’80s mode, talking about his NYC visit and the then-status of some legends, “…but DEZ is thinking of coming back to do something, knowwhatImean?”

In 1989 there was a particularly acceptable use of street art – the World Street Art championships held in beautiful Bridlington. There’s plenty of phenomenal pieces of promo-only ‘Zulu Dawn’ documentary footage online, but these six parts are a great standalone. There’s Troop on the feet, Slick, Risk, lots of pale, windswept b-boys, Normski and people pompously trying to differentiate tagging and “aerosol art.” Fantastic.

Many people may have noticed the beautiful new space opened recently at 5th and Main. It’s called (sub)urban home and it’s the brainchild of LA designer Ronnie Gene. About half of the pieces in the shop are from other designers, and the rest are all designed and produced in-house. I stopped by to check out the situation yesterday and had a great chat with Ronnie. Seriously nice guy with a lot of passion for what he does and a vision for the future of downtown that’s really exciting.

They have some awesome stuff in there, from ceramic skulls to custom, one of a kind sleigh beds. This is such a cool addition to the gallery row area and downtown in general. There are a few other home furnishing stores around the area that really don’t do anything for me, so it’s refreshing to see such great contemporary work in a great space.

(sub)urban home will be hosting a surprise gallery tonight for downtown art walk that will be worth checking out.

Bottom line, the shop is beautiful, the owner is great and they stock some really gorgeous home decor. Go buy something! Go buy a lot of somethings!

World Wrestling Federation presents RAW 1-25-1993 From: Manhattan Center, New York City Sean Mooney

World Wrestling Federation presents RAW 1-25-1993
From: Manhattan Center, New York City

Sean Mooney is outside and is shortly joined by the Repo Man. Repo cuts a promo about repossessing Randy Savage’s career just like he did his hat.

RAW Opening Video

Vince McMahon welcomes everyone to RAW alongside Bobby Heenan and Bob Bartlett. They go over tonight’s show. Heenan of course sides with Flair beating Mr. Perfect later tonight.

Opening Contest: Randy “Macho Man” Savage versus Repo Man
The contest was really just a brawl that eventually killed the crowd. Repo surprisingly controls most of the contest. Savage comes back several times but Repo stops his momentum quickly. Savage manages to comeback and win the contest following a flying elbow drop after nearly nine minutes of action. *½

A promo by Bob Backlund talking about the “Headlock on Hunger”.

Commercials

There may have been a blooper as Heenan was talking to I believe Vince asking if they were on, but not in a typical goofy voice, but rather a serious tone.

Wrestle Mania video package/hype

Second Contest: Kamala versus The Brooklyn Brawler
Throughout the contest, Kamala attempts pin falls but continues to roll Brawler onto his stomach. Kamala eventually hit’s a big splash and correctly pins Brawler.
After the match, Vince goes over to Rev. Slick and Kamala. Slick credits the fans for helping Kamala’s conversion to goodness.

Gene goes over the results of the Royal Rumble. Bret Hart retained the WWF World Heavyweight Championship defeating Razor Ramon. Lex Luger ended up being Bobby Heenan’s surprise. Yokozuna won the Royal Rumble and will face Bret Hart at WWF Wrestle Mania IX. Also at the pay per view Shawn Michaels retained the WWF Intercontinental Championship defeating Marty Jannetty. Lastly, a man known as the Giant Gonzalez attacked the Undertaker during the Royal Rumble match.

Commercials

Main Event: Ric Flair versus Mr. Perfect (Career vs. Career)
McMahon really puts over how important this match is to both men. Perfect slaps Flair a few times as Flair tries to back Perfect into the corner. Perfect with a drop toe hold and another slap to knock Flair down. Mat wrestling by both men with Perfect getting the advantage with a hammerlock. Flair elbows Perfect in the corner and trade chops with Perfect. Flair with the Flair flop after one of the chops. Early on, Perfect is able to reverse everything that Flair does. Flair with a few closed fists in the corner but Perfect with several chops and jabs of his own. Flair with a eye rake and sends Perfect over the top to the floor. Flair grabs a chair and goes to hit Perfect, but the referee leaps off the apron to pull it away from Flair. Flair sends Perfect into the corner and Perfect flips over the corner and apparently hits his head on the ring post. Flair with several punches in the corner and Perfect has been busted wide open. Perfect staggers to his feet and trades slaps and chops with Flair. Perfect connects with a clothesline and gets a near fall. Perfect manages to backslide Flair down after a brief struggle for a near fall. Perfect with a big back body drop. Flair backs off in the corner but Perfect drags Flair to the center of the ring. Perfect works on Flair in the corner with several punches until Flair atomic drops Perfect. Flair with a roll up for a near fall. Perfect suplex’s Flair from the apron back into the ring for a near fall. Flair locks in a sleeper hold and Perfect is fading. Perfect prevents his arm from dropping three times and rams Flair’s head into the top turnbuckle. Perfect looked to leapfrog Flair but instead locks in a sleeper hold. Flair takes Perfect down with a back suplex. Flair goes for and locks in the Figure Four! Flair is using the ropes for leverage behind the referees back. The referee sees Flair using the ropes for leverage and breaks the hold. Flair works on the knees of Perfect with a few boots. Flair goes to the top rope but is slammed down to the mat by Perfect. Flair goes into his knee pad and nails Perfect with brass knuckles. Flair drops a elbow coming off the ropes and only gets a near fall as Perfect gets his foot on the bottom rope and kicks out on a second pin attempt. Flair with several right hands to open the cut on Perfect’s forehead. Perfect no sells some chops and Flair begs off. Perfect with chops of his own in the corner and backdrops Flair down. Flair flip in the corner and runs to the other corner leaping off but is met with a clothesline in midair which gets Perfect a near fall. Flair trips Perfect up and goes for a roll up using the ropes for leverage but Perfect rolls through with his own cover and gets a near fall. Flair sends Perfect into the ropes and drops his head too soon which allows Perfect to connect with the Perfect Plex and picks up the biggest win of his career after nearly nineteen minutes of action! Ric Flair is gone from the WWF! ****
After the match, Mr. Perfect celebrates the win as Ric Flair and Bobby Heenan are furious with the outcome.

End of Show

My Take: I was glad to see Repo Man control Randy Savage for a good portion of their match. Savage really should be used better than he was back in 1993. One of the bigger draws for the WWF, and he is stuck at the announcers table. As you can tell, and hopefully have seen, the Career match between Mr. Perfect and Ric Flair was a damn good contest. The fans were into the match from the beginning and exploded when Perfect got the biggest win of his career to the point. Flair is headed back to WCW and Mr. Perfect, you would think is on his way to main event status.. Or is he?

World Wrestling Federation presents RAW 1-11-1993
From: Manhattan Center, New York City

Sean Mooney welcomes us to the first RAW edition. Until Bobby Heenan comes into the picture. Mooney tells Heenan that he has been replaced by a comedian. Heenan doesn’t like that and a argument ensues.

Vince McMahon welcomes everyone to the show and he is alongside Randy Savage, and the comedian who replaced Heenan, Rob Bartlett.

Opening Contest: Yokozuna versus Koko B. Ware

Koko didn’t stand a chance against the much bigger Yokozuna. After just under four minutes of action, Yoko picks up the fairly easy win with the Bonzai Drop.

A Royal Rumble promo is shown.

Commercials

We comeback to Bobby Heenan, via a video tape. The video is directed towards Mr. Perfect. Heenan is putting over “the Narcissist”. Apparently the wrestler in question is the only person who can perfect in this world. This man will be debuting at the Royal Rumble.

Second Contest: The Steiner Brothers versus the Executioners

During the contest, you can see a clown in the crowd known as Doink the Clown. He appears to be pulling pranks and is really annoying in the crowd throughout the match. The Steiner’s pull off some impressive moves that look very crisp and make this a enjoyable squash match. Rick finishes the match following a top rope bulldog.

We go to Sean Mooney, as we see Bobby Heenan dressed in drag trying to sneak into the building.

Commercials

We comeback and Razor Ramon is in the ring with Vince McMahon. Razor Ramon will be facing Bret Hart at the Royal Rumble for the WWF World Heavyweight Championship. Ramon starts off by saying he was born ready, and likes the sound of a “golden opportunity”. Ramon says he will win the World Title after 8 ½ months in the WWF compared to the 8 ½ years it took Bret to win the strap. Footage of Razor attacking Owen Hart on Super Stars is shown. Ramon finishes the promo off by saying that Bret can’t do anything about Ramon walking away with the title at the Rumble.

A promo by Tatanka is shown where he talks about “Headlock on Hunger” program.

WWF Intercontinental Champion Shawn Michaels versus Max Moon

A pretty good back and forth contest that got the crowd into the match near the end. Michaels did use the sidekick but only to set up his weak finisher, the side suplex. Michaels retains the strap in just under eight minutes.

Commercials

Time for the Royal Rumble Report with Gene. Gene goes over several of the matches which include the following. Shawn Michaels defending the WWF Intercontinental Championship against Marty Jannetty. Both men cut a brief promo that each will win the belt at the Rumble and Sherri Martel’s heart. Also on the card is the 30 man battle royal with the winner earning a WWF World Heavyweight title shot at Wrestle Mania IX. Mr. Perfect, Yokozuna and Jim Duggan all cut promos putting themselves over as the winner of the match. Lastly for the PPV, WWF World Heavyweight Champion Bret Hart defends against Razor Ramon.

Sean Mooney is outside with people getting tickets for next week’s show. Bobby Heenan comes over in a disguise. He begs yet again to be allowed entrance.

Commercials

The recent baby face turn of Kamala as he chases off Kimchee and Harvey Wippleman thanks to his new manager Rev. Slick is shown.

Main Event: The Undertaker versus Damian Demento

Several sloppy moves make this main event hard to watch. Taker obviously controls most of the match before finishing Damian off with the tombstone pile driver.

Commercials

Vince McMahon is standing with Doink the Clown. Doink likes to make children cry, rather than laugh. Crush makes his way out and confronts Doink. As Crush threatens Doink, Doink sprays Crush with a squirt gun. Doink laughs his way to the back.

Sean Mooney finally tells Heenan that he can get into the building. However, the show is over.

End of show.

My Take: Max Moon/Shawn Michaels match was the best match on the show, but that isn’t saying much. The Steiner’s execution of moves in their match was a bright spot. One big negative was Rob Bartlett. He tries really hard to be funny, but he isn’t at all. He is just a overall distraction. As you can tell, this was a fairly short review. The reasoning being that the show is mostly jobber matches. Over the course of these reviews, the reviews will get longer and better because the in-ring quality will be better.

Rest in peace Joe Crack. Mieux, tu as fais pire !

Hormis « Ice Cream » (feat.

blu-ray cover Ted Turner, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg should all be convulsing in their graves

Ted Turner, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg should all be convulsing in their graves over this one, despite none of them being dead yet. Mamoru Oshii has made them look like even bigger fools than they have managed to do on their own. This, ladies and gentlemen, is how you remake your classic film: you actually make it better. You don’t replace guns with walkie-talkies. You do not worry about who shot first and hire Stevie Wonder to create your CGI. You do not piss horrible pastel paints all over the master film copy so that future generations never know what a classic was really supposed to look like. Ghost In The Shell 2.0 is quite simply, a masterpiece reborn and restored. Just like the movies I have alluded to above, there was nothing wrong wit hthe original film here. It is subliminal, full of action and it makes you use your brain for a second – something movies never seem to do anymore. I have owned this movie on DVD for nearly as long as I have owned a DVD player and lately I have wanted to burn it in a ritual fire praying for something better. The problem with every DVD version of this film is that there is this horrible haze around the characters in all of the numerous dark or night-time scenes. Not to play on the title, but it seemed as if the characters were ghosts a lot of the time. My prayers got answered with this blu-ray release because video was completely cleaned up. Even the audio, which was fine before, is better on this disc. Anyone who doubts this can go into the special features and watch the original version of the movie. Once your eyes stop bleeding, consign yourself to watching only 2.0 from now on. I wish I could show you just the opening scene side by side from the original and the 2.0 version to illustrate my point. There are some subtle differences where the scenes were redone in CGI, but nothing where it harms the integrity of the final product. The bottom line is that if you have never seen this movie before, buy this version; if you have seen it or if you already own it on DVD, give it to some poor shmoe who never saw this and buy this blu-ray. You will not be disappointed, especially if you can get it for $14 like I did (Best Buy).

For those of you continuing to ride your bikes this fall and those of you who commute around town need to WATCH OUT! I am not talking about dogs or cars, we need to be watching out for manhole covers, leaves and road paint. Any of these items by themselves are of little danger to us. But get any of them wet and “BAM,” I hope you were wearing a helmet! Leaves, manhole covers and road paint all become very slick when wet and if you are on top of one and a little off balance or accelerating, things might start looking down.

Here is an article that goes more in depth to some common road hazards: Avoiding Slick Spots While Biking

Even worse is the combination of leaves covering a manhole cover or paint. Avoid at all costs!

Please remember to wear your helmet and keep the rubber side down!

As confirmed by IGN.com, Valve’s upcoming sequel to the award-winning zombie apocalypse romp

As confirmed by IGN.com, Valve’s upcoming sequel to the award-winning zombie apocalypse romp “Left 4 Dead” (or L4D), appropriately titled “Left 4 Dead 2″ (or L4D2) will offer players schwag for their avatars. It seems that the info was discovered within the coding for the demo of L4D2 and when questioned about it, Valve was happy to confirm that avatar awards will be available upon the release of the sequel on November 17, 2009 (sorry Europe, 11/20/09 for you). Considering that the info was found in a demo version of the game, the current list of awards may not be complete-even if it is, we can hope for stuff to be added later, right? Here is the current list of what will be available when L4D2 ships:

Med Kit – “earned by beating all five campaigns”

Bull Shifters Shirt – “earned by winning 10 games of Versus”

Left 4 Dead 2 Shirt – “earned by winning 10 games of Scavenge”

Zombie Hand shirt – “earned by killing 10,000 Infected”

Depeche Mode Shirt – “earned by rescuing Gnome Chompski from the Dark Carnival”

Valve did not seem to want to talk about more than this, so one can be pretty hopeful that there is indeed more content on the way.

For those who don’t know it’s currently Black History Month here in the UK and our TV networks have decided to celebrate this fact by airing the following documentaries…..

Note: It’s not a coincidence that they decided to schedule these documentaries during this period.

Race & Intelligence: Science’s Last Taboo ( aired last night (October 26th on Channel 4)

In 2007, Nobel Prize winning US scientist James Watson was quoted referring to research suggesting that black people were less intelligent than other races. His comments caused a storm of controversy, Watson was condemned. In this documentary, part of the season Race: Science’s Last Taboo, Rageh Omaar sets out to find out the truth, meeting scientists who believe the research supports the view that races can be differentiated as well as those who vehemently oppose this view. By daring to ask the difficult questions, Omaar is able to explode the myths about race and IQ and reveal what he thinks are important lessons for society.

Bleach, Nip, Tuck: The White Beauty Myth. Tonight (Tuesday 27th Oct) Channel 4, 10pm.

Two documentaries from the Race: Science’s Last Taboo season examine the growing trend for deracialisation surgery.

Make Me White. Tonight (Tuesday 27th Oct), BBC 1, 10.35pm

The One Show’s presenter Anita Rani goes on a journey around the country to discover what it is that makes some people want to have lighter skin.

So who plans on tuning in to these documentaries then?

David Nordmann, commissaire priseur
Laurent Noël, économiste, antiquaire
Fabrice Hyber, artiste
Harry Bellet, journaliste au Monde

inFAMOUS

Funny thing about the apocalypse: it hasn’t happened as of yet, but we all pretty much know what to expect based upon how it would come about. We all say “If society came crashing down I’d do such and such.” We all have pretty much decided whether we will be good or bad once the rules we follow no longer apply. The question is if it really did all come crashing down, would things go the way we planned? Enter Empire City, your standard New York City clone and the world of inFAMOUS, the first PS3 game from the makers of the Sly Cooper series. You are Cole MacGrath, your average everyday nobody with an average everyday job that is going nowhere. Suddenly everything changes and you are the center of attention. One has to ask, “Do I make the best of the situation or do I just take advantage of it and make things better for myself?” As you play through the game, almost everything you do involves a moral choice; choices that cumulatively shape your character and determine how you will progress. Imagine GTAIII with a conscience. You might think that sounds like no fun at all – but then you pick up this game and see just how wrong you are.

STORY

Cole MacGrath is a bicycle messenger. He loves his girlfriend, Trish Dailey and his best friend Zeke Jedidiah Dunbar is like a brother to him. His life is simple: he does his job, hangs out with Zeke getting into whatever trouble/fun they can find and he spends time with the woman he loves, who coincidentally is a paramedic. This comes in really handy the day he is told to deliver a package to the Historic District. Turns out this package is a “bomb” and it makes Cole ground zero for the worst disaster Empire City has ever seen – The Historic District is now quite aptly named as it is marked by a huge crater. The Warren looked like crap before and now it’s worse with half the penitentiary looking like something took a huge bite out of it. Last but not least, the Neon District is just not looking so colorful these days, and this is still during the good times. Three days after the explosion, you wake up and start displaying electrical abilities Trish and Zeke are scared at first, but they help you control your powers. The storytelling is done in comic book form which is very fitting for the game and on the morning of the fourteenth day, you are given control of Cole and the story begins – but is it the story of a superhero, or that of a supervillain? That’s really up to you now. The concept of good Cole vs. bad Cole is presented very well and Cole’s appearance changes as he becomes more heroic or evil, a la KOTOR or Fable. The only unfortunate dip in the storytelling is that the main missions are exactly the same regardless of your path. I noticed during one cutscene on my evil playthrough that Cole’s aura was blue (that of the hero) despite my distinctly evil karma rating. This was not enough to take away from overall enjoyment of the game, especially since the numerous side missions do change based upon your karma. Good Cole always has to stand alone against his enemies. Conversely, bad Cole at certain points gets to have minions. Your enemies also change based upon your karma: good Cole only fights bad guys but evil Cole often has to fight everyone. I can only hope to be wrong about this but right now infamous has (for me) the best storytelling in a 2009 videogame. Without spoiling, I will say that the big reveal was a jaw-dropper for me.

Score: 9.9/10

comic book-style cutscenes

GRAPHICS/CAMERA

Empire City is an “ugly yet beautiful world.” The city was blown up; the hero is powered by electricity so his enemies blackout the city to try and render him powerless – there simply is not much to look at in Empire City. Regardless of this, the backgrounds are well drawn, the framerate is solid and the character models show that there was effort put in by the artists. This is a post-apocalyptic scenario, but only within the actual city. The rest of the world is fine and that is part of the dynamic the game is going for. Empire City is falling apart, both figuratively and literally and it shows as you progress. If you become a hero, the city gets brighter as you restore power. If you become infamous, the city looks bleak and dismal; fewer people walk the streets and the sky eventually is red during the day. It’s a shame that this game is so prone to glitches. There are even places where you can intentionally glitch the game and have Cole walk and fall through solid objects. There is also some slight popup where cars just appear out of nowhere, especially on bridges. Aside from this, the camera has no real issues that I can recall. I had no problem during boss battles or even regular fights in tight alleyways. The draw distance is awesome – using “precision” which is basically a sniper mode, you can headshot an enemy through a crack in their shield from a rooftop. In terms of detail, there are not many games on the PS3 to rival this one; I just hope the inevitable sequel deals with the glitches and popup.

Score: 9.0

Cole vs. Trash Golem

MUSIC/SOUND EFFECTS/VOICE ACTING

I swear I’d pay to be able to hear the conversations between Sasha and Kessler – that must be some twisted dialogue. It’s hard to talk about this game without giving spoilers because the storytelling was terrific. Audio plays a big part in the game because you spend the entire game collecting “dead drops,” which are encrypted satellite transmissions left by John, an NSA agent, for his handlers to find. It’s a very cool touch that when you are near a dead drop satellite that you can hear a transmission sound since there are other dishes on rooftops . Cole owns a cell phone, and everybody seems to know his number. He gets a call at least before and after every mission and if they don’t have his number, they just hack his frequency and then he has to listen. Then we have Sasha, who speaks to Cole telepathically – saying more than that would give too much away; just play the game. Top all of that chatter with a musical score that just fits no matter where you are in the game and we have a winner before we even mention the voice acting (hear it now at http://www.infamousthegame.com/ ). Jason Cottle (Cole) is just bad-ass in this lead role. I would stop right there but the character of John is voiced by none other than Phil LaMarr. If you don’t know who Phil LaMarr is, you probably still love him. He’s voiced many characters on Cartoon Network and cartoons from other stations as well. He’s been in multiple video games and….who am I kidding? All I have to say is that this is the guy that voiced Samurai Jack – the rest is history. You want to know about sound effects – in a game about a guy that controls electricity? Let’s just say my neighbors must have hated me because the explosions were insane. The final power you obtain, aptly named Thunderstorm, will probably make the picture frames fall off your wall on a good surround system. Sucker Punch is definitely going for sensory overload in this department and I welcomed every moment of it.

Score: 10

GAMEPLAY

Cole has a good deal of abilities at his disposal and mapping them to the PS3 controller seemed like this game would be difficult to control; fortunately the pacing of the game makes movement, combat and item hunting really simple to pick up if you sit and play the game for five to ten minutes. It’s really comforting to have a game with a platforming element in it where someone said “I’m tired of falling to my death.” Now there is the fact that Cole will not die from a fall of any height (unless he lands in water), but no one wants to fall into a group of armed bad guys either. This was fixed by what has been described as “AI jumping.” You have to literally try to miss a jump off of a rooftop and even then you will probably grab onto something. Staying above ground level is a very important part of combat. Cole is extremely durable, but he is not at all bulletproof. You have about a 100% chance of dying if you try to go up against a group of Reapers/Dust Men/First Sons without having anywhere to hide and/or recharge. Recharging is the healing dynamic in the game and you can do it anywhere there is power (hint: when there is no power, make some by zapping things and powering them up). Finding your way around is never a problem between the mini-map and the L3 button. L3 is probably the most important button in this game, even though it is not an attack. It makes Cole release an EMP wave that makes all powered objects in range of it glow. When you are trying to find your last 10 blast shards, this tool will make you drop to your knees like Jerry Falwell and have you thanking Jesus. The combat is nothing to write home about but I just had so much fun playing it. You can challenge yourself by seeing how long you can stay alive on ground level using just your standard attack. If you can last more than a good two minutes on hard then you should pat yourself on the back. Once you start getting some of the more destructive abilities you just want to get some payback. That random guy on the rooftop with a rocket launcher needs to pay; so do the garbage golems and trash scorpions. Practice hitting moving targets at long range; you aren’t using a mouse here and the enemies can move really well when they want to. The major difference between good and evil powers is that the good powers are more precise and the evil powers are literally for blowing stuff up and causing rampant carnage. There is the famous “Cole cannot shoot through a chain link fence” complaint, but this was never an issue for me. There is almost always a safe way to get rid of your enemies; in the later areas where that becomes less and less possible, you should be good enough to improvise. You’re a guy who got his powers like two weeks ago; improvisation is the name of the game – but explaining that further would be a spoiler as well.

Score: 10

REPLAY VALUE/TROPHY & ACHIEVEMENT HUNTING

For the trophy hunters, know up front that it takes minimum two playthroughs for the platinum trophy. The good news about that is that this game is fun as hell to play and if you get all the collectibles on the first playthrough, you only really have to worry about playing through the main story. This may sound like I am chumping out but I highly recommend playing the game on normal first and on hard the second time around. The reason I say this is to keep some kind of challenge in the game. I got beat into the ground at some points the first time I played and that was the heroic story on normal. My second time around, I played the infamous track on hard and mopped the floor with everyone including the final boss. When you get good at this game, you just start raging all over the bad guys. The stunts are a bitch to complete and you really want to get those out of the way as soon as you can. Unlocking all of the abilities and the upgrades is really just a matter of patience. Until you clear an area, there are always plenty of enemies to fight for experience points. There are one or two trophies that may seem really difficult like Hotfoot and AC/DC, but even those are easy once you determine how you will accomplish them. Since there is no online component to this game, there is no way to trophy boost for those looking for an easy road. There is not much to do on a third or greater playthrough if you have your platinum trophy other than just having some fun, which is easy because the game is not that long. Still, when you are done with this game, you are done – all you really want to know is when the sequel will come out.

Score: 8.9

OVERALL

infamous was the first big exclusive for the PS3 in 2009. Due to timing and early game info, it was heavily compared to [PROTOTYPE], but having played both, let me assure you the games are nothing alike (and you should experience both for what they are worth). The story in this game was fresh compared to what I have been seeing in games lately and it made room for an inevitable sequel that I for one am dying to play. The audio and video were simply beautiful and make my mouth water with anticipation of what the second game could look like (can we please have it in 1080p instead of 720?). The gameplay was very good, not great and I definitely want to see a bit more variation in powers in the next iteration, but sticky grenades and thunderstorms are oh so satisfying; things like that need no fixing. A game that begs to be played twice is definitely worth the price tag for a pure single-player experience, and this is a gem all PS3 owners should have in their library.

Final Score: 9.6
