The presentation got done!

The screencast was good to learn and makes for an artifact

It was nice to have a small audience having not done this much before. I hope I can be more confident in letting this go a bit

The presentation might have benefited by directing people more to a specific conclusion or letting it go to a specific conclusion with more interaction

Authenticity through catalytic action? Only for me.

There was no significant discussion online related to this

I think I am a bit clearer about some issues – notably identifying things that are problematic.

One of my more successful blog posts has been 5 Ways to Maximize Your LinkedIn Profile from July 200

One of my more successful blog posts has been 5 Ways to Maximize Your LinkedIn Profile from July 2008. While looking at this post recently, I realized that there are some additional and more advanced ways that many people are not taking advantage of yet. So, I decided another blog post was in order to discuss the advanced features of joining groups, adding your Twitter account and LinkedIn applications.

Join Groups - LinkedIn Groups can help you stay informed and stay in touch with people who similar interests. You can start by searching for Groups under at the Groups tab. You can search by keyword and also limit your search to specific categories or languages. Once you click on the Join Group button, you are placed in a queue for getting approved. Some groups have automatic approval and others require you to be approved by a ‘human’ group moderator.

Within each group, you can start or participate in a discussion, share news, search or post jobs or join subgroups. You can also get a daily or weekly digest emailed to you with all new activity in case want a reminder of what you missed. The greatest thing about groups is that it makes it easier to connect with people you may not know directly. You can select a Group affiliation when you are sending a request for connection to someone.

Add your Twitter account – LinkedIn just started a new feature in the last week where you can link your Twitter account to your LinkedIn profile. Previously, you could do this by adding your Twitter stream as an “Other” website in your profile. But the Twitter integration goes one step further by letting you have your Twitter updates post automatically to your LinkedIn status update. If you put either #in or #li in your tweet, it will pass directly to LinkedIn. If you are an active Twitter user, you may not want all of your tweets showing up in LinkedIn. But you may want to select one or two per week to make sure your LinkedIn status is always ‘fresh’. For more information on this new feature, check out the LinkedIn blog post by Alan Blue.

Add applications – LinkedIn offers several add-in applications to make your profile even more robust. You can find a list and description of each application at this link.

My favorite applications are:

WordPress Blog

Amazon Reading List

Slideshare

WordPress Blog – If you have a WordPress blog, this is a must-have application. The application syncs with your WordPress blog and displays the last 2 or 3 posts within your LinkedIn profile. If you don’t have a WordPress blog, there is another application called BlogLink that lets you bring in any blog and it also displays the blogs of your contacts who are using the application.

Amazon Reading List – I like the Amazon Reading List for several reasons. First, it lets me keep track of the books I’ve read or want to read. Plus, it gives people more insight into my literary likes and dislikes which personalizes my LinkedIn profile. If your connections use the application you can also view their lists.

Amazon Reading List Application on LinkedIn

Slideshare – The Slideshare intregration in LinkedIn is also a great feature. The application allows you to display up to 3 of your presentations. Other options include viewing all of your presentations or viewing the most popular presentations from other users

It is that time of the year again. There are lists popping up everywhere. I started reading this last week and it coincided with some discussions about digital tools in other forums at work.

The Jane Hart has compiled her annual list Top Tools for Learning. It is always interesting to note the changes, what is up and what has gone down The Top 100 Tools For Learning 2009 can be found on this page as a list and also as a slide show. This final list (Nov 15th) has been compiled from the Top 10 Tool Contributions of 278 learning professionals worldwide.

Top 100 Tools for Learning 2009

There have been debates about what should be and what is allowed to be used in schools. Recently one principal was asking about what should teachers be allowed to access whilst they are at work. She was basing her question around reports that many workplaces were banning social networking tools. I am disappointed some of the comments made by some educators, teachers and admin people. Many of those who can’t/don’t see the point are those that are not using these tools. They often have not tried to see what others may be doing and also seem to simply think Facebook or Twitter are all there is. They base their ideas around some of the more sensational news media reports without any or very little actual experience of the tools. I cannot believe that any learning (curriculum) decisions based on such limited and weighted information are going to create 21st century learning experiences in schools.

I find that I use many social networking tools to help me with my everyday work. Many times I have been able to obtain answers to my questions, help with problems and notice about interesting articles, events, etc. via twitter or other online devices. My personal learning network has increased amazingly over the past 18 months and I rely on it as one of the key ways to keep my professional learning/skills up-to-date.

So it was not surprising to me to see Twitter has risen up the ranking. many people I know are now using it but think I was surprised that it is now considered the Top Tool for 2009. Coming third was YouTube, which has risen fifteen places from last year. I know that this tool is used widely by staff and students in my school. Tools new to the list that have become favourites with me and/or others I work with include Wordle (30), Animoto (31), Tweetdeck (43), Glogster (55), Dropbox (71), Flip(simple digital camcorder) (71), and Picnik (71) and Prezi (quite a new tool) is already in 28th place. Social annotating tool Diigo, which has become my main bookmarking and annotating tool, is up to 22 from 35.

The “losers” this year were Delicious (from 1st to 2nd) and Google Reader both moved down one place and Powerpoint (13) moved down 5 places, Firefox (the winner in 2007), Skype and Facebook all went down 7 places, Word is down 14 places and Bloglines down 56 places (12th in 2007, 3oth in 2008 to 86 in 2009) . Interesting also to see Wikipedia at 17th, .

Most interesting to me is how many of the sites and tools (often included at high places on the list) are on the “blocked list” for many Australian education institutions. Some it, could be argued, were not set up as educational tools and can be easily misused therefore could be seen as valid exclusions based in but for others it seems that we should/need to come up with other options than just blocking. At my school we cannot use either Skype or Elluminate, both of which have been used with great success in other schools and allowed students and staff valuable real-time learning experiences.

I haven’t spent a lot of time in LinkedIn lately (finally updated some info today), but some changes LinkedIn released over the past couple of weeks caught my attention. First, LinkedIn now allows your Twitter status updates to appear in the LinkedIn status. This is part of a LinkedIn-Twitter agreement. Twitter’s co-founder, Biz Stone and LinkedIn’s co-founder, Reid Hoffman discuss the value of the integration in this video, which also shows how you can activate the integration:

I’d highly recommend checking the box, “share only tweets that contain #in” (note, they’ve also added the hashtag #li since this video was made). This is similar to the Selective Twitter Status within Facebook (which I use when I’m in the Twitter web app or other app that doesn’t allow sychning of Twitter status with Facebook). Unlike Facebook, however, your audience within LinkedIn is primarily a professional audience, and more than likely won’t appreciate seeing all your Twitter updates, especially if you’ve got the weekly email updates turned on, which will show a compiled list of all your updates. If you turn on the “#li” capability, only the updates within Twitter given the hastag #li will appear within LinkeIn, thus allowing you to control what status updates will appear. This works best for me since I’d prefer just to send only professional networking/work-related updates to LinkedIn and can do so by using #li within Twitter for those updates. Certainly, there’s the school of thought advocating all updates from Twitter going to LinkedIn– the question really comes down to what you’re more comfortable with. Over time, I may change my preference on this, but for now I’d rather start off selectively Twittering to LinkedIn.

As a side note, you may want to check out Ping.fm, which allows you to update all of your social media status’ (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Brightkite, Yammer, etc.) all at once or just selected ones. (I used to use Hello Txt but have found Ping.fm have wider coverage and to be a bit more user-friendly, especially on the iPhone web browser).

LinkedIn also re-did their user-interface. Apparently, this hasn’t gone out to the general public yet according to the LinkedIn blog post (I’m not sure why I got the update and other did not), so I included a screenshot below so you could see it.

New UI for LinkedIn

The biggest change is in the navigation, which has moved from the left to the top. Overall, I like it compared to the old UI, as it gives it a much cleaner look. It also gives much deeper levels of navigation to sub-categories of the main category items, which was limited in the old UI.

Another area where there was a noticeable change is in your Profile (see below). The side navigation is gone (again, at the top), which helps make it appear cleaner. The biggest change, however, is more info in your profile appearing above the fold, which is important when someone is cruising your profile.

LinkedIn profile UI changes

Finally, another update worth looking at in LinkedIn (okay, it’s not that new, but it did happen within the past few months, but didn’t get a lot of publicity), is the LinkedIn-Slideshare synch. I’m a big fan of SlideShare, especially for my job, where I’m doing a lot of presentations that I like to share, which I share on SlideShare. It makes a ton of sense to synch those to LinkedIn, especially since the presentations are mainly professional content– content pefect for my professional network on LinkedIn. It’s easy to install the synch while in LinkedIn (you have to have a SlideShare account obviously, which the synch will prompt you to create if you don’t have one already. If you don’t have a SlideShare account, I’d highly recommend adding content before you synch or turn off the utility until you do– you want content to actually appear in your LinkedIn profile and not have anything appear). Once installed, I’d recommend having the SlideShare utility (which will display your latest three SlideShare presentations), display on your profile page (displaying on your home page is a personal preference), which will allow anyone who views your profile to see your content and increasing your “value-add” to your network. One major downside of LinkedIn (which hopefully they’ll be addressing soon), is that you don’t have control over where the SlideShare utility (or any other) will appear on your profile. It could end up buried deep in your profile, requiring the user to scroll. Ideally, you could determine where the utility would appear– SlideShare clearly is one you’d want to show up prominently.

There are definitely other utilities I’d recommend having in your profile (WordPress, Amazon, etc.)– maybe a topic for a future post?…In the meantime, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the UI changes, Twitter-LinkedIn synch and SlideShare-LinkedIn synch.
