Slightly Stoopid are anything but stupid, an oxymoron of sorts. The front-men of Stoopid Miles Dough

Slightly Stoopid are anything but stupid, an oxymoron of sorts. The front-men of Stoopid Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald are joined by Ryan Moran on drums, Oguer Ocon percussion, De La on saxophone and C-Money on the trumpet.

Originally signed by the legendary Bradley Nowell of Sublime fame, Miles and Kyle were still in High School when they first got their big break.Fast forward ten plus years and Stoopid find themselves taking the stage for their third UK tour.

Opening for Stoopid were Morning Lane and while they put on a good set, especially lead singer Stephen Aravena, they were clearly a favour for someone at Monto Water Rats because the style of music did not remotely compare to Stoopid’s reggae/punk offerings.

Stoopid have been creating that sweet & irie sound for over ten years, increasing the stage presence of the horn section is a breath of fresh air to their shows. C-Money is the master of the horns and is ably assisted by De La (for once not wearing an Arsenal shirt).

Perhaps even more refreshing was the elevation of Kyle to sharing vocals with Miles, the two previous shows I have seen Stoopid Kyle was very much in the background but last night he came to the forefront of Stoopid’s music while still able to work the bass like no other.

Stoopid have a stigma in the US for being a band that appeal’s to the ’stoner’ crowd and they certainly play up this fact, headlining a summer tour with Snoop Dog only enhances this image.

Kyle did not miss a trick on Monday when pulling out a fat joint that got quickly passed round the stage with all members embracing it. Mixing old and new Stoopid did more than enough to satisfy the punk and reggae fans in the crowd.

After carefully reviewing the 49 remixes submitted to their Blazed and Confused at 2 Am Remix Contest, Slightly Stoopid have picked the winners! As part of the contest, Slightly Stoopid invited fans to remix their song 2AM using MixMatchMusic’s Remix Wizard, while the band was on the road for the Blazed and Confused tour. Thanks to everybody that participated, there’s so much talent out there! Some of the remixes were pretty mellow, others were upbeat, some more hip hop influenced, a lot of reggae, some cool sound bites… all in all some really great stuff.

But, there was one remix that really caught the attention of Slightly Stoopid and stood out above the competition. Congrats to icehouseindustries for winning the remix contest! His remix was chosen by Slightly Stoopid as the grand prize winner! Check it out…

The new issue of Obscene Magazine is now available. I did the cover interview with Slightly Stoopid, as well as interviews of Black Math Horseman and Against All Odds.

Black Math Horseman is one of my favorite bands right now, I suggest you pick up their album Wyllt today. Their singer, Sera Timms, is also featured on the upcoming album Of Sound Mind by Ancestors.

Against All Odds are a local punk band from Yucaipa, Ca. They should have a new album out by the end of the year.

In addition to the interviews, I also did several album reviews, and I did the design and layouts for the review pages and the Black Math Horseman and Against All Odds interviews.

The magazine should be available at local stores, as well as online.

Summer concerts are in “full steam ahead”, “pedal to the metal”, “all

Summer concerts are in “full steam ahead”, “pedal to the metal”, “all systems go” phase at this juncture of the earth’s trip around the sun. Festivals are in full swing and summer concert tours are movin’ and shakin’. Speaking of, two MixMatchMusic artists in particular are sweeping the nation, rasta styleeee. John Brown’s Body and Slightly Stoopid are showing these fine states how summer can really be enjoyed, just chillaxin. I had the pleasure of checking out both in the last two weeks. Observe…

John Brown’s Body

John Brown’s Body took over Federal Hill at the 8×10 Club in Baltimore. The house was packed with people of all ages. No joke, I saw a variety of teens, 20 somethings and a handful of parental units decked out in tie dye having a blast. The crowd was friendly, excited and down to bounce to rasta beats. I gotta give it up to the opening act, Passafire who incidentally have a couple of local VA/MD boys in the band. I downright dug their style. It was more of an upbeat, rock/punk/particularly reggae mix. Each song was pretty different so I can’t really put them in one complete category. The keyboardist especially had a ton of energy, as did the whole band. They were a great set up for John Brown’s Body who completely blew me away as well. I was pleasantly surprised by how full their sound was. The band includes a trumpet, sax and trombone player which would bring great vibe to any venue. The lead singer has a captivating voice that puts you into a trance. Also, I’ve never seen a dude half bald, with dreads, kill a mic. I highly suggest checking out this tour if it comes to your city and you like reggae in the least bit. Find future dates HERE. They’ll even be in the UK!!

John Brown's Body in Federal Hill, Baltimore

Passafire, killin' it!

Slightly Stoopid

I’ll go ahead and say it, I’m stoopid for these guys. (Sorry, I had to go there.) I’ve been streaming them a lot lately and honestly, I’m digging the 2am remixes. But, uh, back to the lecture at hand, the Blazed and Confused tour, a whole different scene from the previous concert attended. First of all, the concert was at a beautiful outdoor venue tucked away in the trees of Colombia, MD called Merriweather Post Pavilion. LOVED attending a concert there. They had a great variety of drinks, food and entertainment on top of the actual concert. There’s a club on site for 21+ to get away and grab a drink as well as a music themed pinball arcade, waaaay cool. Second, I’d say the average age was a bit lower than what I’m used to. Slightly Stoopid/Snoop/Stephen Marley, keepin’ it real with the young’ins! As usual, Marley started it off with a crucial reggae style set to open the show. Then… Snoop D-O Double Gizzle hit the mic. He did a bunch of old school stuff which was exactly what the crowd (and myself) was hoping for. Also, Lady of Rage got on the mic and did an Afro Puff segment. Totally took me back to the good ol’ 90’s. Definitely a highlight of Snoop’s set as well as his official smoke break.

Blazed Individual

Snoop D-O Double G

Slightly Stoopid came on stage with quite the set up. They had 2 large skulls on either side of the stage, lit up totem polls, a hazy Polynesian night themed backdrop, and an array of lighting that gave off a pretty stellar stony ambiance. The crowd was diggin’ their vibe and they often kicked it up a notch with some punk. These San Diegans definitely know how to please a stony crowd. Also, it’s pretty cool that they are headlining the tour.

Stoopid Set Up

Slightly Stoopid, kickin' it up a knotch

I’m sitting here in Myrtle Beach S. Carolina, after 2 days off, listening to irie fmtrying to

I’m sitting here in Myrtle Beach S. Carolina, after 2 days off, listening to irie fmtrying to make sense of the passed three weeks.

This is the first hint of what I was getting into this summer…

Before I go into it, I will tell you that my videos will be sorted out when I get home, and I’ll have some interesting shit for yall to check.

The show goes as such: I play for about 45 minutes when doors open, then Mickey Avalon’s set is opened up by an artist named Beardo. I really get a kick out of this dude’s shit. His first song makes the unsuspecting crowd kind of, well, confused. By the end of the second song, the whole place is with, and by the end his third song he’s got brand new fans. Pretty interesting. Hella rockin.

Following Beardo’s intro is Mickey Avalon, his DJ, Mackey, and his back up dancers. You can find his music somewhere between Iggy Pop and The Beastie Boys. His vibe might seem a little soft when he’s not rapping, but dude is a scrapper.

Just sayin…

This is yours truly with Beardo and The Seedless chicks in Vancouver

I play for another 20 minutes, then the yardies touch the stage in the form of Stephen Marley & Family. These cats are real cool with a cast of characters that includes his brother Julian Marley (who by the way has a WICKED new track with his brother Damien Marley called “Violence in the Streets” which I can link for you if you read the whole thing…). and also dancehall star Spragga Benz.

I play another 15-20 minutes, then the stage is filled with the Snoopadelic’s stage rig, which includes a lowrider bike drum kit, a bass stack taller than the Bassie, weed plants and the players. Snoop Dogg comes out EVERY night to roaring applause and the band is SOLID! I can’t get enough of this set. He is also joined by Kurupt and Daz Dillinger of the Dogg Pound, as well as OG LADY OF RAGE. They smash through all the hitters, and fuck the place up!

Depending on the city, either Snoop closes the show, or my boys from Slightly Stoopid close it out. It’s great because when all is said and done, Slightly Stoopid bridges the gap between all of the bands, and makes the whole evening cohesive. And trust me when I say, Slightly Stoopid is murdering these crowds consistently!

Here’s a couple flix of interesting things I’ve seen. My camera is shitty, but you will get the idea. With the exception of certain cities I can get a mission in, it’s been Groundhog Day for the past three weeks. HUGE venues, HUGE sound systems on HUGE stages with HUGE crowds.

Red Rocks Amphitheater is the most incredible venue I have ever seen!

Voodoo Doughnuts in Portland, Oregon. Big up to Tino for stacking the bowl then bringing me to this place. “The Magic Is In The Hole”

This is the Maple Blazer Blunt, which is a Doughnut.

Sorry Hipsters, No Trick Riding

Vancouver is a whole other world. It’s complicated getting in and out, but this place is the SHIT!

And OB was in the area!

Beat Street Records, where I copped some wicked pieces of vinyl including a Aaron Neville “Hercules” 45.

Vancouver, aka Vanamsterdam. This place really got it together as far as making Herbs acceptable.

A couple other dream shows I would kill to have been at, for reals!

When all is said & done, this tour is one for the books…Coming soon, some footie of Akon joining Snoop onstage, more flix, and some real tales, after the whole thing makes more sense to me. Tour ends Aug. 8th outside Boston at the comcast center. After that I’m goin to chill in Boston for a couple days, then hit NYC. Hit me up!

Being dragged out to a stoner festival on a Sunday thirty minutes away is not my idea of fun (ESPECIALLY BECAUSE I MISSED TRUE BLOOD). But somehow I ended up going to the Blazed and Confused show in St. Augustine Florida. Snoop Dog, Slightly Stoopid, Stephen Marley, and Mickey Avalon were headlining, and of course Snoop Dog dropped out so he was not even going to be there. While getting a strong drink at the cocktail bar I noticed my little sister in line with a Satan-like person signing her arm. Instantly I knew it was Mickey Avalon, and rushed to be next to her in case they exchanged any salvia or something horrible. He could be one of the scariest looking guys ever…. I mean listen to his music and the guy you picture singing is pretty much what he looks like. The highlight of my experience was watching Stephen Marley. His brother Julian came on stage, and his sister and they all sang a great version of Could You Be Loved…. SOOO GOOOD….
Right when Slightly Stoopid came on I noticed I lost my sister and went to find her. She had been seriously overserved and I had to take her home immediately, head bobbing out the window the whole time.

I guess the moral of the story is, stoner fests like Blazed and Confused usually mean that some sort of crazy adventure will ensue.

Although this is a good cause, this is proof that it takes more to make a viral video than simply asking people to view it, or offering to plant a tree. If this video achieves 10,000 views, I’ll break ground for the first tree.

Seeking to inspire ordinary people to act on behalf of the environment, mokugift released its first video compilation featuring music fans on the Blazed and Confused concert tour responding to the question: “If you could make one wish to help fight climate change, what would you wish for?”

As a guest of Slightly Stoopid, mokugift—a social venture that makes it easy and rewarding to plant real trees for $1 apiece—is attending six stops on the tour: Portland, OR – July, 17; George, WA – July, 18; Mountain View, CA – July 24; San Diego, CA – July 25; Orlando, FL – July 31; and Boston, MA – August 8.

For every video that exceeds 10,000 views, mokugift will plant a tree for each person in the video and send them a T-shirt to commemorate that they “planted a tree with Slightly Stoopid.”

“Planting trees is an easy way to do that.”

Slightly Stoopid invited mokugift to join the Blazed and Confused tour to encourage fans to plant trees through mokugift’s Artists &and Athletes Program, in support of the United Nations Environment Programme’s “Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign.”

Launched at the Climate Convention meeting in Nairobi in 2006, the campaign originally set a goal of planting one billion trees but has since issued a new target of seven billion trees—roughly one tree for every living person on the planet.

By visiting mokugift.com Artist and Athlete Web pages, known as Tree Islands—which track the number of trees planted and can be easily promoted through blog posts, Twitter, e-mail and social networks—fans can plant trees and send a message to the artist or athlete receiving the tree gift.

Anyone planting a tree with Slightly Stoopid can see their message posted on Slightly Stoopid’s Tree Island, along with the number of trees planted. For every tree they receive as a gift, Slightly Stoopid will plant an additional tree.

Mokugift fosters environmental solidarity by letting everyone see how their actions inspire their friends, and friends of friends. Anyone can register on mokugift.com and receive a Tree Island. Friends can plant trees for you, or you can plant trees for yourself or for friends. Watch as mokugift tracks how friends become inspired to join with you and UNEP in helping to fight climate change and restore tree cover to lands that have been degraded by logging, slash-and-burn farming and chemical-based agricultural methods.

You can see the total number of people you’ve inspired and the total number of trees planted by them. These achievements are shown on your Tree Island page. To celebrate the friends that join you, for the first tree that each of your inspired friends plants, you receive a free tree. For every 10 trees planted by people inspired by you (3 degrees of friends), you’ll get a free tree.

Mokugift also offers a convenient widget—an online icon that automatically tallies the total number of trees planted by you and by the people you’ve inspired. The planting of real mokugift trees is administered by two award-winning nonprofit agroforestry organizations: Trees For The Future (TFTF) and Sustainable Harvest International (SHI).

Agroforestry integrates agriculture, trees, people and animals in ways that restore ecological balance. Mokugift lets you plant real trees in any one of 12 tropical countries that are fighting deforestation.

About UNEP’s Billion Tree Campaign
Launched in November 2006 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), “Plant for the Planet: The Billion Tree Campaign” is now recognized as one of the UN’s most successful environmental campaigns. To date, UNEP has tracked the planting of more than three billion trees in 166 countries. Every tree counts, and UNEP counts every tree.

About mokugift
A social venture focused on customer experience, profit and tangible, positive benefit to the environment and society, Mokugift makes it easy and rewarding to plant real trees, for $1 apiece, through online “gifting.”

About Slightly Stoopid
Slightly Stoopid is fronted by childhood chums Kyle McDonald and Miles Doughty (who share lead vocal, guitar and bass duties).

… Featuring Mickey Avalon, Slightly Stoopid, SNOOP DOGG and a few surprise guests! July 22, 2009 at the Pacific Coliseum, Vancouver BC. For someone who has been a fan of Snoop from the beginning, this was the first time I have seen him live. I know, some fan I am…

First up, Mickey Avalon.

Next came, Slightly Stoopid.

After Slightly Stoopid’s set there was a short break….. which felt like forever. The anticipation was through the roof, Snoop D-O-double G was near.

This gave us time for a few random photogs…

Hi..

What up, Blair?!

Sweet shirt, Chris! Oh, and thanks for driving us drunk rowdy rowdies to and from the show!

More of the crew.

Finally, the lights went dim and smoke filled the stage….

‘SUUP SNOOOOOP!!!!!!!!

Akon was in town a day early for his show and performed a track with Snoop!

What?!! The Lady of Rage rockin’ rough with her afro puffs.

Its kind of obvious, but I forgot to mention that my friends and I were 5th row, front center. Thanks for copping those tickets, Wayne.

Killer show and good times with good friends! That evening definately goes in the books, filed in the history section of my mind.

If you haven’t heard yet, there is a phenomenon happening right now that warrants your immediate attention. King of the West Coast, Snoop Dogg, has teamed up with San Diego’s genre-bending Slightly Stoopid for a mind blowing collaboration. They’ve thrown modern reggae great (and son of Bob), Stephen Marley, and seedy pop newcomer, Mickey Avalon, into the mix too. What we have here folks is the Blazed and Confused Tour (don’t forget to become a fan on Facebook). Here’s a little sneak peek:

Rick Florino of Artist Direct notes that at the Irvine show “Snoop closed off a fantastic set chanting ‘Peace and Love.’ There was something very ‘Woodstock’ about the whole set… There’s no segregation at a Snoop Dogg show and he delivers something for everybody. What’s more rock n’ roll than that?”

Each of these artists/groups has a unique sound and message, and yet their vibe and mindset is one and the same. Bob probably summed it up best with “One Love.”

As part of the tour, Slightly Stoopid is hosting a remix contest for their song 2AM, a summertime reggae classic that will sooth your soul! Slightly Stoopid has loaded the stems to 2AM into MixMatchMusic’s Remix Wizard, and now all you pro and amateur musicians (and even nonmusicians) have the chance to create your own kickass remix of the song and share it with the world.

You have two options for making a remix: you can download the stems for free and use any software you want; or you can click on the MixMaker button on the widget to make a remix in MixMatchMusic’s simple online music editor. If you’ve never experienced remixing before, or just want to see how 2AM was made, check out the MixMaker! Either way, make sure to you upload your remix to the widget so that others can listen to, vote on, and share it. The contest starts July 15, 2009 at 2:00 AM and ends August 21, 2009.

There will be ONE winner picked by Slightly Stoopid, who will receive:

A set of the new Slightly Stoopid branded headphones, an autographed Stoopid poster, 2 tickets to the next Slightly Stoopid concert in your area, a limited edition Slightly Stoopid branded glass pipe, CDs of Slightly Stoopid’s entire discography & Chronichitis vinyl, and the Slightly Stoopid Live in San Diego DVD! Also – the winning remix might be posted for streaming on Slightly Stoopid’s Website, MySpace, thesixtyone, and Facebook (subject to Slightly Stoopid’s approval). Not bad, eh?

To get your creative juices flowing, here’s the official video for 2 a.m. Roll yourself a blunt and have a look and a listen. Then, enter the Blazed and Confused at 2AM Remix Contest here.
