Just got back from the gym after lifting and man, I couldn’t wait to get out of there! Both the men’s bball and baseball teams were there and that is just too much (athlete) testosterone there.  I’m sure that many of them are smart guys but when the teams are together it’s like all courtesy and brainpower is checked at the door! I hate crowds in general, so I tried to be super quick and I could leave without too much lear-ing on their part (like how dare you invade our space) but today has been a slo-mo day so I doubt I was really all that quick haha.

It started when my alarm went off at 0600.  My normal pre-run routine took me easily twice as long as it should have.  Blahhhh. Just one of those mornings where the whole body is dragging, mentally and physically.  Since I was up, and it was 50*(!), I decided to NOT bag the run.  It was an awkward decision.  Like yesterday, the first 2-3 miles were unbelievably slow.  I honestly think I could have walked faster!

But I stuck with it and “reset” the mileage ticker in my head (but not my watch, I never reset the actual watch).  The next 6 miles were definitely progressively faster and the last 2 miles were at 830 pace — flying for an early run.  Unfortunately the overall pace was horrendous, so I’m trying not to think about how slow the first couple of miles were.

That should have been a sign to SKIP my second workout of lifting but I am stubborn and once I get an idea in my head, it’s happening.  So I did my full body lifting routine and, because I wanted redemption, I did a 3 mile run afterward. The weather was also still really nice, not quite sure of the temp but it was easily 65* and bright and sunny.  It felt so good!

And redemption the run was, my body felt so much more awake.  But still, so much working out today! It didn’t seem like that much when I was thinking about it / doing it but when I told my friends over lunch (aka me bragging haha) they all were like “holy moly!” and just now typing it up, I think it was quite a bit. That coupled with my higher running lately means that I need to take it easy!  My heart rate was also much higher than it should have been, so I NEED tmrw to be 100% rest. Shouldn’t be too hard because I already know this weekend will be filled with work and I also know that I could easily use the extra hour or two of sleep in the morning.

Hot-Spanish-TA update: Well maybe not really an update per se BUT I talked to my actual prof yesterday about getting together with someone who was fluent and practice my speaking (and in all honesty I would have done this regardless of the fact that one of the TAs makes me feel like I’m 15) and she emailed both Spanish TAs saying that it would be nice if they included me in things to “charlar” and stuff.  Sweet deal yo.  And I saw him at dinner last night.  Holler.  Is it sad that the encounter kind of was the highlight of my day?

And since you guys love “The Facts of Life” so much here are the next 5 (what am I going to do when the list runs out? BTW just to clarify, I did not come up with this list myself, it was a fb thing that I stole haha):

16. The only time I look forward to a red light is when I’m trying to finish a text.

17. A recent study has shown that playing beer pong contributes to the spread of mono and the flu. Yeah, if you suck at it.

18. Was learning cursive really necessary?

19. Lol has gone from meaning, “laugh out loud” to “I have nothing else to say”.

You know what I didn’t know was awesome funny?

Kooky Japanese people who decide to spazz out on camera, capture it in slo-mo and then set it a mellow hip hop groove.

How did I not know that?

Each spazz out is incrementally funnier – bonus points for the fish, sumo guy, kid and inexplicable ending.

A dear friend of ours at the Dale is a bit of an amateur videographer, and shortly after getting himself an HD videocamera, he decided to play with it and film a thunderstorm in Edmonton, Alberta. He took a short clip of a particularly bright lightning bolt and slowed it wayyyyy down to the point where it didn’t even look real. (very awesome). Funnily enough, he started getting posts from haters people on youtube calling him out, saying the video looked so unreal, that they thought it was fake! So our dear friend decided to prove them wrong by editing together a 5 minute clip of the thunderstorm, starting off at regular speed, then slowing down bits and pieces. He then slapped the PERFECT song in the background (MGMT Kids), which ties the video together so well and makes it a pleasure to watch.

One day, he goes on his account to check his stats, and finds 2000 VIEWS in one day. He thought, “What the flick is going on?”, so he checked who has linked to him, and found that some big russian weather website had ran a feature on his video, and from there on, a massive influx of viewers stormed (pun not intended) the link and pummeled the view count. We our proud to say our dear friend has over 16,563 goddamn views on his youtube video. Congratuf**kinglations. That is INSANE. And all because a couple of douchebags tried to rain (again, pun not intended) on his parade. You NEED to see this video. It is sick. But make sure you watch it in HD for ultimate sickness. And then when you’re done peeping the vid, take a look at the comments, because they are HILARIOUS. Our favourite comment, is from sportsmen7777, simply stating “Power”. Probably due to a weak grasp of the english language, this fine gentleman was not able to divulge his feelings any further than his one word comment, but we at the Dale believe he has captured the essence of the video better than any english scholar could. Well done sportsmen7777. And well done dear friend. We are looking forward to your next video.

Discovered this video. It’s basically of nothing in particular in Moscow. Seeing it full speed you’d probably ask yourself why you’re watching it but when you slow it down….

Keelay & Zaire ft. Slo-Mo – Pimp Dreams

Never skimp out on a good editor, my friends.

I’m not even sure if I really like this video. The song is just so catchy, sounding like a sinister arcade from the depths of pop hell. The video’s style just feels inorganic- cutting at inopportune moments and using slow-motion willy-nilly instead of saving those shots for rises in the song.

The worst is when they cut to the long-shots of the “aliens” beating up the band. They’re so sparse and small from that far that it takes you out of the video. When in doubt, always use a close up, fool!

Sorry, Hadouken! Despite your slow motion, this is not well-received.

I’m afraid to say that I AM one of these people who only watches tennis when Wimbledon is on.  I have never enjoyed any of the other tournaments and I’m unsure whether that is because I am quintessentially British, and Wimbledon satisfies my British sensibilities.

This year’s final finished around 6 hours ago and I’m sad to say that I just wanted it over and done with.  I only woke up near the end of the second set (after a dose of anti-histimines sent me to dream land for a couple of hours and still didn’t cure my incessent sneezing), which had me gasping in shock that Roddick was two sets ahead.  Except he wasn’t; the joys of being still dozy.

The match proved to be evenly matched which ensured that Mr Becker, Mr Castle and Mr Henman didn’t have much to say that made any sense.  Really – was this the BBC’s ‘dream team’ of commentators?  I don’t wish to appear cruel but did ANYONE actually understand a word that Boris said?  I think the one I caught was a gasped ‘OH MY GOD’ when Roddick dropped the ball he was about to serve.  I expected him to follow it with some incomprehensible babble about how Roddick was obviously fumbling with nerves, however the gasp hung in the air without follow-up from his fellow presenters.

I enjoyed the line from Andrew Castle when he exclaimed; “Anything can happen”.  Well – actually – no it couldn’t.  Not ANYTHING at least. And Tim Henman nearly sent me back to sleep with his boring monotone just droning over the airwaves.  Despite my whinging here – I do actually enjoy listening to the commentary – it does actually make the game more humourous and causes much hilarity in our house while we’re on the edge of our seats willing the underdog on (after all – I always used to support Ivan Lendl as a child).

I’ve also enjoyed the BBC’s new ‘arty farty’ slo-mo shots between games.  It’s always a guessing game of which banal piece of the game they will film – is it a hand picking up a ball?  A foot scuffing some dirt?  A mouth roaring in anger or joy?

My final joy was the montage quickly cobbled together at the end of the coverage – the final shot of Federer and Roddick heading towards each other over the net, presumbably for the friendly hug and pat on the back, actually looked like they were about to launch into a slo-mo snog – I was glad when they cut to Federer snogging his winning prize instead.
