Hello everyone, and Merry Christmas!  I have compiled (and it was startlingly easy) my top 20 albums of 2009 (if you know me, you know it’ll be an R&B female-dominated affair as usual!).  Unlike last year, when I listed 10 and did mini reviews, this time I’ve got 20 (since my shortlist came to 20 albums, I thought it would just be easier to rank 11-20, than pick out some for Honourable Mentions).  No mini-reviews, or I would be here forever, and I think my blog posts are long enough without breaking the 5000 word barrier!  So I’ve just put the best and worst tracks from each album with the album cover, and hopefully you’ll be intrigued to download my favourite songs of 2009.  And while you’re at it, you can download my own album, Quiet Storm, here too! So without further ado…

It’s been too long! Too long, I say, since my last post.

Sorry ’bout that!

I’m also going to try and make my blog entries a little more interesting/organized by adding sub-headings.

The Semi-Formal Dance
There will be a semi-formal dance at my school on Friday and all of my friends are going with their boyfriends. I don’t have a boyfriend. I’ve never had a boyfriend. I’ve never even slow-danced with a guy.

It’s not that I’ve never had crushes; it’s just that I’ve never advertised myself to guys or ever let any of them know I liked them, even in a subtle way. I try not to flirt and I tend to not tell, like, anyone about who I have a crush on. I guess I’m what you’d call, “hard-to-get”. I’d rather have a guy ask me out. And so far, none have!

I’m okay with that, for the most part. I’m used to it. I’m used to people raising their eyebrows when I tell them I’ve never had a boyfriend. But this is _______ (insert name of my town here). Everyone here has dated before, it seems.

My little brother had a girlfriend when he was 9 or 10. (He’s 11 now.)

I am also obligated to go, since I’m on the student’s council. And I’m excited about it. I have a dress bought, and it is PERFECT for me. It’s about knee-length and it’s one shoulder and black. I’m going to try to make my look either flapper-inspired or Audrey Hepburn inspired. Probably Audrey, since my Gramma lent me a couple of her pearl necklaces and my Mum lent me pearl earrings that I wore for Halloween when I was Audrey.

Anyway, I’m going to be absolutely beautiful, whether or not I have a guy beside me.

As long as I have some friends to hang out with who aren’t intermingled with their boyfriends the whole night [making me feel left out/akward/uncomfortable] I will be perfectly fine.

I addressed this issue at pathfinders, and they all reassured me that there’s power in being single and that ‘it’ll be right when it’s right’.

I really love these people.

Plus, the girl who has a new boyfriend every couple of weeks wasn’t there.

Whatever. I’m going to look my best, and stand as tall as I can, and be as happy as I can, and hope for the best.

The Dentist
Went to the dentist on Tuesday. I brought in a book about ghosts and the dentist asked me if I was a ‘believer’. I told her yes. I got free toothpaste, floss, a toothbrush, and then I got to pick out a toy from the toychest. I picked out a little ring with a flower on it. I’m turn fifteen on the twenty-ninth of this month.

Crying at the movies

I saw ‘My Sister’s Keeper’ (my mum rented it for a mother-daughter movie night) sometime within the past week and I cried like CRAZY. I was basically having hysterics.

I have come to realize lately that over the years I have grown emotionally stronger, and that I can handle a lot more without crying nowadays. That is, in reality.

When I watch a mushy movie or a Rememberance Day assembly or something like that, I tend to sob uncontrollably. (For crying out loud, tears come to my eyes when I see the “When You’re Gone” music video or the SickKids or the Princess Margaret Hospital commercials.)

In fourth grade [approximately] I cried at everything. I cried if I got a C+ on a test. And you know, I’m trying to think of something else unreasonable to list that I cried about, but I cannot. I know I cried a lot, but I guess I had a really depressing childhood.

But now I’m stronger. I currently have a 58% in mathematics and although I’m terrified for it, I haven’t cried about it.

I mean, I had an emotional breakdown yesterday, but that was about a science test my mother wanted me to stay home from pathfinders to study for. I was pretty confident with the the content of the test then, and now, after the test, I’m thinking that much of the test was actually fairly simple. Or I could be wrong.

The Moon and Mars
Questions of the day:
If you could take 6 people to Mars with you (a year on the shuttle and a year on the planet), who would you want to take with you?
And, if you were given the option someday, would you live on the moon? I hear they found water on the moon a few weeks ago. LOTS of water. Google even changed their logo for the day for it and everything.

Life can be tough sometimes, but I’ll make it through. It’s all worth it.

today i went to the beach with my love… and i was thinking of the craziness that love is… and how it’s the strangest things that we appreciate about the people we love… like today, dre used his hands to create a sun-dial to see what time it was… (i believe this came from his boy scout days)… i love that! it was the most amazing thing i’ve ever seen him do.  and in the car on the way home we were listening to Salt-n-Pepa’s “Push It” and he was like “listen…listen to the cow bell… that’s what makes the song sexy.” lol!!!!! those are the things that years from now i’ll look back on and smile. or the other day when i had all my jewelry out on the counter that i had worn the night before and he turned the pieces artistically into a smiley face… or the times when i’m sad and he’ll slow dance with me to no music. nothing is perfect. no one is perfect. but love is perfect.. even within the imperfection of us as human beings… our love is perfect.

This poem was written by a terminally ill young girl in a New York Hospital with cancer. It was sent by a medical doctor in an email.

When I received this email, it said she had six months to live, that was back in July of 2006.  As her dying wish, she wanted to send a letter telling everyone to live their life to the fullest, since she never will.  She’ll never make it to prom, graduate from high school, or get married and have a family of her own.  She wanted to see how many people would receive her poem.  She is probably gone now, but hopefully with the emails that were sent, her memory and the continued work of finding a cure for cancer will continue on.

I just received an email containg a wonderful poem. Beautifully written and touching… however, as beautiful as it is, the integrity of the poem was compromised.

I don’t mind passing along a bit of uplifting writing, but as a writer and artist myself, I prefer to give proper credit to the correct author.

So I did a little research:

“The American Cancer Society will Donate to a Dying Girl if enough emails are circulated-Fiction!”

Summary of eRumor
An email says there is a little girl who has six months to live. People are asked to forward the email about her to as many people as possible because the American Cancer Society will give 3 cents per email to support her treatment. It stars with a poem titled SLOW DANCE. The email is signed with the name of a professor at Yeshiva University in New York.

The Truth:
According to the American Cancer Society, the email is a hoax.

The girl in the story is never identified, the American Cancer Society has not made any such commitment, there is no way for forwarded emails to be accounted for even if someone wanted to make a donation for each one, and the professor named at Yeshiva University, Dr. Dennis Shields, says he never had anything to do with any such story. If you dial his number, you get a recording saying the story is not true.

There are several versions of this email making the rounds of the Net. Some simply say this is a poem written by a dying girl. Others say the little girl gave it to a medical student. Others say the poem is being circulated by a doctor.

The poem is actually from the pen of psychologist and writer David L. Weatherford (www.davidlweatherford.com).

This song still touches my soul even though I’ve heard it a thousand times. John Mayer is a wonderfully, fantastically, beautiful writer. At some point you may find yourself in a relationship that you know eventually will have to end, but you hold it so dear, you will slow dance until it diminishes. You keep hoping it’s the storm before the calm, but there isn’t a calm coming. You hope you still have millions of breaths left, but it’s the deep and dying breath. It was two of our friends’ civil partnership on Saturday just gone, and in addition to having a marvellous night celebrating this fabulous occasion with them and other friends at The Hospital Club in Covent Garden, I also had my first ever slow dance!

It seems very Bridget Jones to be saying that at the age of 24, but I come from a very small family, so weddings are fairly infrequent occurances for me!

Jonny and Richard chose a marvellous first song to kick off their married life, P!nk’s ‘Glitter In The Air’ – though from a ’selfish’ point of view,  slow dancing with Greg around everyone else on the dance floor was one of the ’snuggliest’/sweetest moments of my life thus far I reckon!

Not that I’m trying to steal the moment as my own from the happy couple (who looked magnificent), of course heh!

the last time i bought something from k records it was beat happening’s dreamy.  it was a rather worrying fourteen years ago.  i found them mostly an aural delight but their indie flimsy whimsy personas occasionally grating.  it was a world i infrequently dipped my toe into over the following two decades.   i still enjoy wearing cardigans and holding girls hands.  i still get irritated by flouncy haired indie types in too-skinny jeans with deliberately awkward mannerisms.  i am not amused by folks writing on themselves with magik markers.

so i guess what comes from these mutterings is i haven’t really moved on at all since i was sixteen…

which brings me eventually to jeremy jay.  i heard the surf guitar joy division genius of breaking the ice from his slow dance album a few months ago.  i flung some bucks down for it mere minutes later.  it’s an odd mix of eighties john hughes teen dramatics, acousticky romanticism and modern lovers style pop chug.  there’s something distinctly sixties paris about jay.  he has that gallic insouciance of early jacque dutronc.  and there’s something of jonathan richmans wry dryness and calvin johnsons precocious fifties fantasies to him.  fucking horses and moonlight everywhere…

the records offer up some slightly aloof, detached vibes.  live, this crumbles a touch.  his slightly strange simple minimalist songs are beefed up (as much as a bunch of skinny angular young men can be) and given a kindof fuzzy reverby garagey stomp and post-punk swagger.  managing to be naif sexy and artschool cold and romantically ambigious all at the same time.

i liked.  a lot.  nice to be listening to something that’s not filled with grim existential horror or smothered in tape hiss or available in limited run of forty six copies.  it’s pop music for sure.  and there’s now wrong with that is there?
