Una de mis técnicas de video favoritas es slow-motion. Combinar esta técnica con la música adecuada puede tener resultados espectaculares. Es el caso de este video en el que podemos escuchar “Black Bones”, a cargo de Teenagersintokyo mientras observamos una interesante (mini) historia.

Algunos detalles que el director proporciona sobre el video:

• Utiliza una cámara Phantom.
• La mayoría de las tomas son a 510 fps.
• La primera escena fue ralentizada un 50% más en postproducción.
• A los que dudan, asegura que el fuego es real.

Este viernes me acerco para transmitir e intentar contagiar la gran sensación que tuve al ver un video musical hace unos días. Muy pocas veces nos adentramos en los detalles relevantes de una creación audiovisual, es casi nulo el interés que algunos tienen por la cantidad de símbolos y significados que puede mostrar cualquier obra. Yo soy de los que creen que las generaciones actuales son completamente superficiales, la enajenación y la falta de profundidad en la mayoría de los contenidos visuales que hemos recibido en los últimos años, nos ha acostumbrado a mantener esa distancia y a privarnos de muchas cosas que valen la pena. RHETT DASHWOOD es un buen representante como director creativo de proyectos, realmente le gusta hacer de todo: cine, video, foto, arte digital, imprenta, marcas, animación interactiva, etc. Cuando yo me encontré con el videoclip Black Bones de Teenagersintokyo, dirigido y producido por Rhett, recibí inmediatamente el mensaje, llevarla con más calma y relajarme casi que a la fuerza con los planos en cámara lenta, corriendo a miles de cuadros por segundo. Estoy seguro que muy pocas veces nos llegan videos como este, en los que tenemos una experiencia narrativa en la que podemos ver las cosas con más claridad y darle más importancia a los significados contenidos. A mi sí me late tomármela con más calma en estas cosas, échenle un ojo, o dos.

‘ The extension of time in moving image reveals a microcosm of/for immersion ‘

A brief explanation: It has to do with the term of Immersion in relation with the technique of Slow motion (overcranking). The stretch of time in the field of moving image gives us the opportunity to see a different world, a microcosm ( derives from the Greek word mikro-kosmos ). Slow motion can make the image shows us ‘the moment’ and depict other actions that take part in this microcosm. How the viewer inside an installation can be immersed by this depiction of inner (digital) microcosm.

Today, I woke up in the afternoon by accident, missing my class. I felt so ashamed I did absolutely nothing until I had to meet with my group… for that same exact class.

At 4 we met in the library, talking about our project. Surprisingly, I was the most prepared of the group. We tried to set up our presentation, and then settled how we would divide the project. Then, after only 20 minutes, we left. Our group functions better as collaborating individuals than working together.

I finally ate. It was a good feeling. But I didn’t feel too well, so I didn’t stay long.

And then I came back, turned the fan on, and had a nice, relaxing evening, with no interruptions. In other words, I played gory video games. That’s about it.

Is this what it meant to be myself?  There are arrows that exist at some points and occasionally others—there are swings of swords and finishing strikes with a vaguely Eastern flourish (not to say that the Greeks are not capable of flourish, they certainly are the sons and daughters of Helen), there are reasons to fight these mythical creatures, these Persians with their long hair and their golden hooks and beliefs that they are gods of all of these places, that our god is worth more than theirs.  Not once have I lost blood in slow motion and I am not certain if the loss of it requires all of this detail—time already stops when there is blood on my football jersey and I have to rub whatever spattered flourish into itself (we wear whites when we are away) to turn everything pink, and certainly there is no pink in Sparta:  there is nothing but men here—we fuck (yes! fuck!) our women who could best any man not from here, we laugh at anyone who is not a soldier, and so there is no room for a culture that means anything but what shield we used.  The boy washing his blood away to get back into battle would’ve loved this—he would’ve screamed ‘This is Sparta!’ despite this not being Sparta or Spartan—he would’ve used more exclamation points—he would’ve marveled at how the body separates from itself when metal is introduced to skin—he would’ve thought he learned something about history, about what it is like to write a Letter in November, about courage and Laconophilia, and he would’ve listened to something industrial, something with the sounds of labor, and he would’ve run back onto the field of battle knocked out on his feet.

Before I really cared about ISO, DOF, and sensor size I looked for style, size and mega pixels. At that time Casio was the right pick for all the wrong reasons.

A few years ago I lived in Tokyo. There, Casio also makes cellphones. And for a cellphone w/ a 5 megapixel camera it was AMAZING. So naturally when I looked at point and shoots, Casio was my favorite choice. They were slim, sexy, and had a ton of mega pixels.

However, when I actually looked at picture quality I was a bit baffled. I finally came to the conclusion that I could compromise quality for convenience when it was attached to my cellphone, but as an actual camera it was not the best choice.

After looking at their new line up the EX-FH25 and EX-FH20 I still stick with that belief.

They do however have something that you cannot find elsewhere within this price point- slow motion video. Both cameras should be able to shoot 210 fps, 420 fps,  and 1000 fps. Don’t be too impressed by the 1000 fps though because it will probably be limited to 224×56 pixels just like previous models (which more than anything is just gimmicky). Reviews are not yeah available but you can find them on sale on November 27th in Japan. A little more than $500 for the FH25 and just under $500 for the FH20.
