HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!!
Last day for early mornings, at least for now! I of course went back to sleep, but I felt like this morning I could have stayed up and gone thru my day fine. Ah well haha! This morning, I didn’t do much. Just chilled on my computer and watched some tv!
Once at work, I heated up some lunch (a burrito, for those wondering) and then went on with my shift. It was super slow, almost too slow. I can’t really complain about today’s shift!
I have honestly nothing else to report on today. What a boring day in the life of Natasha. Tomorrow should be better!

The UKs recovery from recession has been slow, in fact the economic recovery since the crash of 2008

The UKs recovery from recession has been slow, in fact the economic recovery since the crash of 2008 is the slowest since 1921, as reported in the Guardian. It’s no wonder things seem so hard looking at the below chart.

The ONS blamed the weather for a low rate of growth: “The strongest evidence was that it reduced retail output in January and March 2013 but boosted demand for electricity and gas in February and March, which increased output in the energy supply industries.”GDP was 0.4% higher in Q1 2013 than in Q3 2011 and therefore has been broadly flat over the last 18 months.”

I think there’s more than the weather at work.

A recession is defined as two or more consecutive quarters of economic decline, the UK has just missed its third recession in four years. Is austerity really working? No it’s not, the UK government needs a different approach and quick but it has nothing to offer.

If this is the worst recovery since 1930 then that should be reflected in the stock market performance and you guessed correctly. It doesn’t.

The stock market has appreciated over 85% since its lows of 2009 but if the economy has just missed its third recession in four years, how is this possible? Quantative Easing is looking like a likely culprit, excess fiat is being pumped into the banks and inflating the stock market to give the appearance of a healthy economy. I’ve discussed that the financial markets are fixed here and here but rather than dwell on fixed markets, have a QE giggle with Mr John Clarke.

so maybe just think a bit. with my fingers. that’s something I can do of course. I’ve been doing it

so maybe just think a bit.
with my fingers.
that’s something I can do of course.
I’ve been doing it for years.
still the emptiness.
still the inability.
still the sterility.

so I should be trying to get in contact with authors.
living authors. publishers.
basically be out there.
maybe.
is it my own stupidity that prevents me from doing it?
is it cowardice again?
funny it does not feel like it.
it feels like there is something wrong in it.

wrong because you need to act on love, from love.
not from indifference or hate.
that would be being in hell.
and I am in hell now.
coward and in hell.

even now writing is just indifference.
not absolute hell.
something closer to purgatory.
where there’s only the grey.
beckett talked of this.

he seemed to be miserable in a similar fashion.

strange now so I improvise.
just like for voice machine.
so many texts piled and piled.
then suddenly an idea, usually vague.
suddenly something like a movement of the mind.
some days it goes as deep as the heart.
only the crust of the heart.
the heart of the heart that will be for another age.
in the best case.

so, what could I do.
I can write the grey.
I can write without quality.
with repetitions, with no guts, no energy in it.
no will to do a great text.
no impulsion.
this grey thing, half-dead.
boring.

that I could do.
and of course everyone can do this, or so it seems to me.
everyone.
except maybe not so many people would want to be so bored.
and that’s true.
not so many people would want to sacrifice almost everything.
as I did.
even if not enough of course.
never enough.

let’s leave this topic.

the grey I was saying.
I can do the grey.
I can do an seemingly endless amount of it.
until tendinitis in fact.
then I stop and start over the next day.

the idea of automatism, so very hackneyed.
I don’t believe in myself.
I don’t believe in this.
without the drive, without the supreme purity of desire,
nothing good emerges.

I condensed this in my ‘into’ text.
this is raw mud.
motionless grey (brown) mud.
(the idea of grey mud is nice.)
(maybe that could be a distinction:
grey mud, that is clay, is already a stage higher.
brown normal mud is nonpoetry par excellence.)

I don’t believe in this.
this writing goes nowhere.
this writing is nowhere.
there is no quality (it was dissolved).
(quality would be all hard material,
metal, rock, jewels in classic best cases.)

no quality, meaning this is vain.
this is vain, this is still-born.
another image.
there is no life in it.
from the start.

which also means of course that I would not even want to ‘work’ on it.

this relatively disgusting but efficient image:
the text as baby, or shoot if you want to go vegetable.
this living thing that you can take care of.
by correcting, by rethinking, by perfecting, etc.

no.
at this stage at best I’m a frog, a fish, or a mullusk.
laying zillions of eggs.
only one in a million stands a chance.
or less.
(or like throwing a million-sided dice
hoping for just one number
the winning number
the life number.)

this can only fail it seems to me.
this can only fail.
there is no hope.
(etc.)

except that of course I feel a strange ‘health’ in doing this.
as if there was indeed something in the mud.
as if the mud had a life somehow.
a life of its own.

as if this stirring, even if very weak, very slow,
gave some impulsion to lifeless matter.
as if herewith there was this chance,
this one-in-a-zillion chance
of emergence.

A: For starters it’s the medium that I fell in love with many years ago. I recently read this article online, “What is Pastel?” by Mike Mahon, and will quote it because it neatly sums up what I love about working with pastel.

Pastel is the most permanent of all media when applied to conservation ground and properly framed. Pastel has no liquid binder that may cause it to oxidize with the passage of time as oftentimes happens with other media.

In this instance, Pastel does not refer to pale colors, as the word is commonly used in cosmetic and fashion terminology. The pure, powdered pigment is ground into a paste with a minimum amount of gum binder, rolled into sticks and dried. The infinite variety of colors in the Pastel palette range from soft and subtle to hard and brilliant.

An artwork is created by stroking the stick of dry pigment across an abrasive ground, embedding the color in the “tooth” of the ground. If the ground is completely covered with Pastel, the work is considered a Pastel painting; whereas, leaving much of the ground exposed produces a Pastel sketch. Techniques vary with individual artists. The Pastel medium is favored by many artists because it allows a spontaneous approach. There is no drying time, therefore, no change in color occurs after drying as it does in other media.

Did you know that a particle of Pastel pigment seen under a microscope looks like a diamond with many facets? It does! Therefore, Pastel paintings reflect light like a prism. No other medium has the same power of color or stability.

Historically, Pastel can be traced back to the 16th century. Its invention is attributed to the German painter, Johann Thiele. A Venetian woman, Rosalba Camera, was the first to make consistent use of Pastel. Chardin did portraits with an open stroke, while La Tour preferred the blended finish. Thereafter, a galaxy of famous artists—Watteau, Copley, Delacroix, Millet, Manet, Renoir, Toulouse Lautrec, Vuillard, Bonnard, Glackens, Whistler, Hassam, William Merritt Chase—used Pastel for a finished work rather than for preliminary sketches.

Pastels from the 16th century exist today, as fresh as the day they were painted. Edgar Degas was the most prolific user of Pastel and its champion. His protégé, Mary Cassat, introduced Pastel to her friends in Philadelphia and Washington, and thus to the United States. In the Spring of 1983, Sotheby Parke Bernet sold at auction, two Degas Pastels for more than $3,000,000 each! Both Pastels were painted about 1880.

Note: Do not confuse Pastel with “colored chalk.” Chalk is a porous, limestone substance impregnated with dyes, whereas, Pastel is pure pigment—the same as is used in other permanent painting media.

Today, Pastel paintings have the stature of oil and watercolor as a major fine art medium. Many of our most renowned, living artists have distinguished themselves in Pastel and have enriched the art world with this beautiful medium.

So knowing all this, I often wonder, why don’t more artists use pastel? Is it because framing is a big issue? Works on paper need to be framed and pastel paintings have unique problems (see my April 27, 2013 blog post). Second only to the cost of maintaining a studio in New York City, frames are my single largest business expense. Sometimes I am grateful that pastel is a very slow medium. I typically finish 4 or 5 paintings in a year, which means I only have to pay for 4 or 5 frames!

The day started at 6am. Danny had to open today because the usual lady who opens had taken the day off. I know I said in yesterday’s blog that I was opening, but I was too darn tired, and good thing Danny and I work at the same place; it’s easy to switch shifts like that. Once he left for work, I went back to sleep for a few hours. After I awoke from my ‘nap’, I started to edit photos from my trip to Drumheller. Hopefully I get done editing so I can blog the photos on Sunday (watch for it!)! All I did while editing was watch tv. Usually I listen to music while I edit; not today I guess! While editing, I tend to loose track of time and sometimes I’m almost late for work! Today it seemed like I was looking at the clock/time every 10 minutes; at least I knew I wasn’t going to be late for work!
With looking at the clock every 10 minutes, I knew I could get ready for work with enough time so I didn’t have to rush! I was pre-warned by Danny that is had been a slow day, and he was right! Some day’s I don’t like slow days, but today I didn’t mind it. Less people=less grumpy customers. All is good though.
Late night shopping is a common thing for Danny and I (as well as late night dining). Tonight, we hit up Sobey’s (that is where we usually shop for groceries). Just grabbed a few snacks and some lunches/suppers for the weekend and the week coming up!
Not a whole lot more to report. Days like today, there isn’t much to say. If there is anything you want me to blog about, feel free to comment your suggestion, or use the contact me tab.

So we are in spring entering summer in the next month and apparently that means absolutely no one wants to have dinner or lunch in a nice classy restaurant. Understandable but annoying. As a server my pay depends on people actually coming in to eat. My hourly pay sucks. (this is why college is necessary can’t wait till August!) I don’t know maybe cuz I just moved from Puerto Rico after living there for 6 years but I really don’t get it! This kind of weather motivates me to go out to a nice place to eat and have a good time. Although I also work at an italian restaurant and that means fattening food and everyone is trying to get that bikini body before summer but it still sucks -mope- I am a server with no business you can guess how bored I am when I have time to write a blog while on the job

Last night Danny and I were so tired. We crashed around 11pm and were up at 7:30am. My mom worked at 8am so at least she got to see us before she went to work. We planned on leaving around 9am so we could stop in Red Deer for some lunch; we were gone by 8:55 and we are never on time for anything that is related to driving or getting on the road to be somewhere. The hardest good-bye for me was saying bye to my dog. Weird? Once we got to Red Deer, we went shopping at Target. Target just reciently expanded to Canada and we did some price comparing and they have decent prices on things. Once done, we went for lunch at Moxies. Boy was that ever good! On our way back to Leduc from Red Deer, our gas light came on; first time since owning the van had it come on for us. Luckily there was a town close enough where we could stop for fuel. When we arrived home, we had to rush to half unload the van so we could get me off to work. Once Danny got back home, he finished unpacking the van.
Work was the same old thing. It seems like I usually get the grumpy/cranky customers, but today was a really good day! It was pretty slow for a Thursday so that helped me on my first day back from extra day’s off. I was still full from lunch throughout my shift, but by the time I was done work, I was getting pretty hungry. I was too lazy to cook so we got a quick bite to eat from McDonald’s.
Now its off to bed, I have to be up at 6am to be at work for 6:30am!

Day 39

So I ran my first 10k in a dog’s age two nights ago. So far in my run training I have done speed and hill drills but haven’t worked on my distance until now. I felt a little slow and I lost some of my pacing due to traffic in my neighborhood which is always frustrating. I want to run loops in Prospect Park this weekend to compare my time. In any case, I am progressing steadily by building up my running endurance.
