James.

Η ταινία τελειώνει με ρηχό πιστολίδι και υπόσχεση για σίκουελ, αλλά εν τω μεταξύ έχει θίξει τα πιο καυτά προβλήματα της παγκοσμιοποιημένης ανθρωπότητας σήμερα: φτώχια, ανισότητα, αποξένωση, μετακινήσεις πληθυσμών, επιτήρηση, αποδοχή αυταρχισμού, ξενοφοβία, διάσπαρτη δομική βία. Συν τον φόβο για το τι άνθρωποι είμαστε, βιολογικά και πνευματικά: πόσο πιο άνθρωποι από το εξωγήινο άλιεν;

I’m writing this post from the rooftop of the Calcutta Swim Club. Around me loom several 19th

I’m writing this post from the rooftop of the Calcutta Swim Club. Around me loom several 19th century buildings, their colonial brick walls propped up by bamboo scaffolding. Farther on, the lights wink off, one by one, from the floor-high window panes of modern office buildings. After a sweltering day, the air has cooled. My toes stretch out, into a small puddle caused by the recent rain. It’s 2 in the morning in Bengal, and the city is sleeping.

I’m thinking about Dharavi, the infamous Bombay slum which we visited earlier this week. It is reportedly the largest slum in all of Asia, with over a million inhabitants, and it sits squarely in the middle of Bombay. This, ironically, means that the land which houses this slum is some of the most valuable in the world. Dharavi is also a center of thriving mini-industry, where inhabitants make a living selling home crafts and running small recycling or manufacturing factories out of shacks as large as a walk-in closet. This economic model has brought in business leaders from around the world to visit Dharavi, to see what principles can be applied to their own endeavors. I can’t help but think of this cynically; powerful men in three-piece suits travel to visit the ‘least of these’, but only to figure out how to further their own fortunes.

It would be easy to paint you a compelling picture of the abject poverty that we found in Dharavi. I only would have to describe the naked children running near industrial machinery, or the garment workers sewing t-shirts in a poorly ventilated single room for perhaps 40 rupees an hour (a relatively good job, in Dharavi), or the piles of human refuse mixed with discarded trash that surrounded one of the few working toilets in the area.

It would also be easy for me to leave you with a sense of hope and affection for Dharavi’s people and its future. I could mention the piles of papadum that women would leave to bake in the sun, perched ten at a time on woven baskets. Or the crowds of smiling children who would breathlessly use their entire English vocabulary on us as we passed by. Or the female teachers, hired by the non-profit we were touring with, playing tug-of-war with their children in the newly built kindergarden toward the edge of the slum.

I myself reflected on something different as I traveled through the cramped alleyways of Dharavi, however. I asked myself, “Why, exactly, am I even here?”

I had felt compelled to see Dharavi ever since I began planning the trip. I spoke to several friends of my desire to tour the slum. Their response to my proposal was mixed, unconsciously echoing my own mixed feelings. On the one hand, I felt that it would be an unpardonable offense if Elliot and I treated ourselves only to a sugar-coated version of India, immersing ourselves fully in its exotic flavor while keeping at arm’s length the parts of India’s society that wouldn’t fit well on a postcard. And in India, despite the widespread presence and high visibility of poverty, it is uncomfortably easy to do this. Elliot and I learned quickly to ignore the small children who tapped on the window of our taxi, the crippled men who brought their hands to their mouths in a pantomime of hunger, the young women with babies in their arms who called out to us in Hindi. In many ways, our response to Indian beggars is simply a response to American beggars: look away, continue walking. No one is proud of it, but we all do it.

In India, I felt, the sheer magnitude of the poverty present on the streets contributed to our ability to ignore it. It became the omnipresent background, part of the scenery. Something we passed through as we went on to our destination. I am tempted to conclude, based on my own observation, that this may affect the Indian mindset, as well. If so, such pronounced social stratification means that two Indians can live in the same society while occupying completely separate social spaces. There is a Delhi for the rich, a Delhi for the destitute. There is a Bombay divide that goes beyond North/South. Calcutta has its Victoria Monuments, and it has its Mother Teresas. Dharavi is literally in the middle of Mumbai, but for all intents and purposes, it is its own city.

I felt the need to see this side of India. On the other hand, touring the Dharavi slum seemed profoundly exploitative. Elliot and I were quite literally touring poverty. I worried that that, despite the assurances of the tour guide that we had the peoples’ permission to be there, the Dharavi citizens would feel like they were on display. A South Indian television station interviewed me as we were leaving the slum; I believe that they wanted me to cry out in horror at what I had seen, so that they could have a shot of the Westerner reacting in amazement to conditions in Dharavi. Little did they know that they were interviewing a lifelong b.s.er; I gave a ten minute interview without saying anything of substance. But my own concern stays with me, even now. Can we feel anything but embarrassment for temporarily acquainting ourselves with poverty, and then simply passing through?

I understate the altruism of the touring program when I say this; Reality Tours is an excellent program, and an NGO that has several projects designed to better conditions for Dharavi citizens, for which our tour money is earmarked. I would recommend them to anyone else. My criticism lies not with the experience, but with my own motivation. What was I looking for? And what exactly did I expect to do once I found it?

Maja is a Swedish woman sharing her time between Sweden and doing good deeds in Kenya. She lives in a house with a nice garden in the outskirts of Nakuru.

Åsa and I was invited to her home and since she recently came from Sweden we were treated with Kassler and Swedish mustard. ”Kassler” is a smoked cutlet made of pig meat and I think it´s very Swedish or Scandinavian. Whatever the origin it was truly a delicious lunch..

Maja is running an NGO on a strictly private basis and not without private sacrifices although she has some donors. She told us about her work, some of the difficulties and in some cases the cultural clashes between the African way and the very organized and efficient Swedish way.

On a regular schedule, the train runs through the community of mostly Nicaraguan families in San José's exclusive Pavas district.

Colleagues from the UN University for Peace, made a visit to Pavas, the exclusive San José district where you’ll find the US Embassy and the President’s compound. You might be surprised by what they saw and who they went to visit.

Nestled in the lap of luxury is a small city slum. With about 147 families, mostly Nicaraguans, this community is located on a small parcel of land that the community somehow managed to purchase. This is key — last week over 250 anti-riot police evicted a series of squatter settlements in Pavas. However, because this community owns the land, they’re still there.

My friend Cristobal has been volunteering in the community school and my colleague Victor accompanied him on an eye-opening journey.

As expected, the environmental conditions are infuriating — there’s no form of solid waste removal and open sewage goes down a creek. A nearby “factory” is also dumping waste into the stream that flows through the community. In yesterday’s Dispatch we mentioned Costa Rica’s sewage challenges and how the entire central valley’s waste heads downstream and into the Pacific ocean.

Three times a day train piles through the slum dumping a heavy, black smoke in its wake. This is no environment for the 25 kids who are attending Cristobal’s school on a regular basis.

In spite of the disregard for the well being of the people in the community by local authorities, the people “hace la lucha”…putting up a fight to stay and make their community work. Coming from Nicaragua which is the 2nd poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, they’re looking to build a better life and contribute to their new host country. Let’s hope that their host country will someday soon respond in kind.

Kjøpe litt for mye sjokolade.
Nam!
-	Skrive postkort i skyggen.
Snakke amharisk. Få en ny venn.

Do you know how they treat poor people in Cambodia? They give them a bottle of soy sauce and tak

Do you know how they treat poor people in Cambodia? They give them a bottle of soy sauce and take their picture. I am not sure who is supposed to be the one feeling blessed, the photographer or the impoverished villager. Let me tell you how the communists get votes in Cambodia. They drive in a multi-car convoy into an area. Body guards, military and local leaders have already prepared the people. They all sit orderly in rows, on the ground, in direct sunlight. If they are lucky, it is an overcast day and only 90 degrees outside. Normally it is piercing hot and 105 degrees. The big shots sit on cushioned chairs in the only shade there is. After a lengthy speech on whatever they are selling (politics or propaganda), the people bow as they each receive a little rice, some noodles and a bottle of soy sauce.

Do you know how much a bottle of soy sauce costs in Cambodia? 700 riel or $0.30. They always give them the cheapest food money can buy. Rice that is normally fed to animals, noodles made in China or Vietnam [the delicious ones come from Thailand] and the most pathetic soy sauce they can buy. The total donation, per person, is less than $5.00. Fuel for the multiple Lexus SUV’s, $600. Lunch for the officials, $450. The people usually have to stand in the sun for 3-4 hours to wait for the donation. Everyone is photographed and their pitiful faces put on national television that night with the full text of the speech. They clap on cue but never ever smile. Why? They are only getting a bottle of soy sauce and some other stuff. In a week it will long be forgotten, and totally consumed. Everyone knows this is political persuasion. No one present could tell you what the politicians said twenty minutes later.

So why are they there? Simple. They are poor. A bottle of soy sauce is better than no soy sauce at all. If they were not poor, they would not be there.

What disturbs me most is that Christians play these games with Cambodian’s and other poor countries. Why would Christians play political games with the lives of poor people? Most just want to look good or feel good. They want to promote their own ministries and raise more money for themselves. They desire to get elected to national Church positions. I am hopeful that most do it out of completely ignorance and simply they are doing what has been modeled to them. Certainly this practice needs to be re-evaluated in the church.

Donation Lineup

What does the Bible say about giving to the poor?

Do you know that Jesus specifically told us how to give to needy people. It is so clear, it does not need anyone with a theological background to interpret it. Jesus said:

“1 Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets [microphones], as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” (Matthew 6:1-4)

   Why take pictures?

Cameras are everywhere nowadays. Why take pictures? The excuses are too many to list:

“The donors need to know that I have faithfully given what they sent to us.”

“We want to make the most of the opportunity to share the gospel to a captive audience.”

“Their weathered faces help remind me to pray for the poor.”

“The people like to have their picture taken.”

Do you feel sick to your stomach? I do. When you see politicians doing such despicable things we just get angry, but when Christian do such things it really makes me sick to my stomach. What has happened to the Church that we stoop to the level of corrupt politicians? Why, in light of very clear teaching directly from Jesus Christ [the red letter stuff] do Christians still engage in such humiliating practices. My guess is it has much more do to with self-righteousness, pride, and feeling superior than it does with the needs of the poor.

Please, enough soy sauce. It is not even healthy and causes high blood pressure! If you are helping the poor don’t do it for your own agenda. Don’t take pictures. Don’t make people sit in rows in the sun. If you want to help the poor, make a lasting difference in their life: Provide education them and their kids. Take them into your home. Help them start a viable business. Feed them from your own table. Build a relationship with love. Truly invest in their lives and create opportunities for them.

Give them a bottle of soy sauce and keep them dependent to the poverty that continues to entangle them.

I think that this kid’s parents didnt teach him anything or either he was taught but he didnt listen. Maybe this kid is from a slum and he is illiterate and didnt go to school because of the lack of money. This does connect to Bibi’s lucky quote in Boy Overboard

For one session only at Chain Reaction, Global Hand will offer a look into the pressures faced by those in poverty, through a hands-on, experiential activity.

Participants try to earn enough to survive by making paper bags out of newspaper and home made glue. They must earn enough to pay for rent, food, sanitation, medical needs and, if they are fortunate, education. Those that cannot make it end up in the hands of a loan shark. This game throws participants into the hopelessness and intricacy of the poverty web.

Ben Solanky, who will be leading this workshop at the event says;

“While only a reflection of a harsher reality, this simulation will offer fresh insights for those who have not lived beneath the complex web of poverty, and provides a unique platform for the solution-based discussion that will follow”

This session is not to be missed, and takes place in the Blue Space at 11:15 on Thursday 12 November. For more information on the Basti Life Simulation please contact Global Hand at ukoffice@globalhand.org

I have always been around the blogosphere since I arrived, two days ago, here in Cabanatuan City for a permanent stay, but wasn’t able to update because I was quite overwhelmed by so many things that I didn’t know from where to start or what really was I to talk about.

There have been so many changes, some good, some are bad bad, but altogether surprising. I wasn’t really able to explore this place, our hometown, for I was still young those times and I had not a chance to roam and explore this city. That’s why I was so exhilarated when I had the freedom to make “gala,” actually the first thing I did upon getting home & eating lunch with my family. I didn’t spend much though; I just bought a shirt, a book & a cheap mp3 player. I was thinking of buying a new phone for I have none–all the recent ones, either stolen 0r just lost, but I resisted the temptation.

However, all the excitement vanished when I got back to our house. No, I wasn’t saddened or anything. Only it had been difficult for me to accept the fact that I’m really home now, in our house, surrounded by shabby houses, bare footed children, foul mouthed neighbors & filthy surroundings. You guessed it right, we are living near–or to be frank–in a slum, though the land we’re living is our own.

It was quite depressing that despite the continuous progress of Cabanatuan as a city, our area has remained the same, same old faces, same old problems. And it really pains my heart to see the condition, let alone accept the truth that we are one with them. The only thing that gives our family dignity and set us apart from the other inhabitants is our ability to live modestly in spite of poverty. We wear clean clothing, eat thrice a day, we don’t spit & curse. Our Mom & Dad are both educated people and I thank them for bringing us up properly. Otherwise, I and my two younger brothers will be just the same as the kids we see in the streets.

On the other hand, there are still some little things that brought me happiness like the recently re-installed water-line & electricity which my parents had dedicatedly toiled for. It is also good to be at home that when the hunger strikes, I can grab anything inside the fridge & eat, unlike when I was still living with my Granny where I didn’t feel at ease eating much.

Frolicking with Daniel & Benjamin was also one of the things I missed. They are currently into playing Pokemon–and I, an instant walking Pokemon Glossary-Encyclopedia for them as I used to be a Pokemon addict when I was younger. Mom is also funny, giving me a hard time making ice candies. Papcee also approved of me coming home for good, though he doesn’t think it’s wise for me to take up another course and study at the same time, so I decided to work until next year. I think it’s just about time that I set my personal plans aside and help my family. Besides, I don’t think that the money I’ve saved from my previous job will suffice for me to make it through this coming semester. I don’t want to give my parents a hard time so I have no other choice (and that choice I am really willing & excited to make) but to work. I will be job-hunting on Tuesday, so good luck for me.. ^_^

P.S

Anyone of you who have some tips on how to make it on a call center job interview?

La Perla Slum In Puerto Rico

A friend of mine’s had asked me about La Perla in Puerto Rico recently and wanted me to confirm what he heard about it. This seaside slum is notorious for its rampant drug users/dealers, which is all so often associated with violence and crime. Yes it is true La Perla has this, and that you’d have to be careful when entering upon its three entrances.

Graffiti Laced Walls

Tourists are discouraged from entering as well as carrying valuables. But there is another side most don’t associate this slum with = beauty. In my personal opinion, La Perla is the most beautiful slum in the world. Most would associate a community by the seaside to be extravagant and expensive, and La Perla is just the opposite.

Purposedly built between the city walls and the rest of San Juan, La Perla is filled with multi-colored shacks, with colors that give Crayola a run for their money.

Animal Print Rooftops

Aside from the colors, you have culture and art. Covering the walls are displays of the many graffiti artist’s talents, and a skatepark built alongside for the youth. To top it off, one of the best basketball courts around, which is great for those hot summer days to just hang out and play ball. I highly suggest playing in the early morning between 9-12pm.

One Of The Best Basketball Courts Around

Having gone into La Perla a couple of times with mis amigos, there is so much to take in and soak up. This place is a photographer’s heaven on earth as well for anyone who LOVES art and culture. So don’t be discouraged from entering La Perla, as long as you have local company, are not threatening, not a tourist or the policia, then you should be fine. It is then you’ll see why they call Puerto Rico the “Isla Del Encanto.”

buscavam refugio).

Aí, nasceu a favela!

Genre: Action – Laufzeit: 112 Minuten – Land: USA / Neuseeland

Was soll man also letztendlich von “District 9” halten… ? Reine Unterhaltung eben !
