Anyone who watched last night’s installment of RESCUE ME witnessed Michael J. Fox’s Emmy reel — and perhaps the series’ bid for writing and best drama. It was that good — ironically, because it was so difficult to watch. It began with a horrifying dream sequence depicting suitcase bombs exacting a terrible toll on the city, then followed up with Sean receiving a diagnosis of kidney cancer, Colleen and blackSean ruining their relationship by having sex, and finished up with Sheila’s extended monologue about the uniquely personal horror of 9/11. By the time it was over, I didn’t know whether to stand and applaud or throw my TV out of the nearest window. Yep, that’s TV you can get behind. TV that draws you in, grabs you by the [CENSORED] and twists. That’s why the best dramas are on cable.

As ATROCIOUS IDOL ate into my precious FRINGE time, the phone-number recap revealed that Allison and Kris didn’t completely suck, like Danny, and Adam was only pretty bad instead of awful as usual.

Yep, that was AS THE WORLD TURNS’ former Jennifer, Jennifer Ferrin, playing Nancy Lewis and her barbecued twin, Susan Pratt, on FRINGE. Only this wasn’t a case of of spontaneous human combustion, it was pyrokinesis. Nancy and her sister were given the ability to start fires with their mind but, lacking training, had trouble directing the heat outward. Olivia makes a connection between the experimentation on Nancy and the Cortexiphan trials she herself underwent.

Remember that video of a young Olive cowering in a burned-out room? We can now assume the younger Liv was a firestarter, after all! Nancy put her power to good use when she torched the scuzzy Sanford Harris. (Were you as disappointed as I was that Sanford turned out to be part of the conspiracy? It was all too neat and convenient. I wanted him to just be a garden variety jerk with an axe to grind playing office politics.) Speaking of the Z.F.T., Walter revealed that the typewriter responsible for the Z.F.T. Manifesto belonged to “Belly” — William Bell. However, Walter maintained that the founder of Massive Dynamic would never do the bad things attributed to Z.F.T., and blamed others for twisting its ideals. This episode was a treasure trove of meta references (even more than usual):

•While investigating Susan’s death on the street, Walter was toting a Slusho drink — a recurring in-joke seen in many J.J. Abrams productions, from ALIAS to LOST to the movie Cloverfield, and even slipped into other shows, like HEROES. Slusho — “You can’t drink just six!”
•The entire interlude with Emmanuel Grayson was one big wink at STAR TREK fandom. “Grayson” is taken from “Amanda Grayson,” Spock’s human mother (hence his “I am the son of Sarek” line). The conspiracy by renegade Romulans from the future to alter the timeline is the plotline of the new Star Trek movie, written by FRINGE co-creators Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and directed by Abrams! And, of course, the actor playing Grayson, Clint Howard, appeared in several TV incarnations of the series. Oh, and look for Slusho in the movie! (Hint: It appears in a bar scene.)

Next week is FRINGE’s season finale, so we will find out if Ms. Sharp survived being shot, and (hopefully) exactly where the Observer is taking Walter. Also, be in the lookout for an cameo by Star Trek’s Leonard Nimoy as William Bell. And I am happy to note that FRINGE has been renewed for a second season, so we can look forward to a few more appearances by Nimoy.

Spazio, ultima frontiera. Diario del capitano: i fatti che sto per narrare hanno origine negli anni ‘80.

Circa 20 anni fa, infatti, su una rete che credo fosse locale davano le repliche della prima storica serie di Star Trek. Mi piaceva moltissimo, la sci-fi era il mio genere preferito (complici anche alcuni cartoni animati giapponesi che affiancavano la robot mania anni ‘80).
Qualcosa, crescendo, deve essere andato perso. Ho sviluppato odio e distanza sia per la letteratura che per la cinematografia di fantascienza: vedere Star Wars è stata quasi un’auto-costrizione che un piacere. Alla fin fine mi è piaciuto, soprattutto la trilogia originaria, ma non è bastato.

Ieri sera, però, è arrivato l’inatteso armistizio. E’ stato Star Trek. Il ritorno alle origini: origini dei miei gusti di spettatore, origini della storia un tempo partorita dalla mente di Roddenberry.
Il merito è di Abrams: J. J. mi ha regalato momenti fantastici con Fringe, in parte anche con Alias ma soprattutto con Lost.
Andare a vedere Star Trek nasceva anche da un atto d’amore verso Abrams: è come quando stai con qualcuno e vuoi vederlo sempre.
Dopo il trailer di Transformers 2, però, si è aperto un mondo, una cerniera tra la me bambina e la me adulta. Riecco Spock, Kirk e l’Enterprise. Ritorna l’amore per la fantascienza, così, improvvisamente com’era sparito.
Ed ero veramente emozionata: colpita dagli effetti speciali (cosa che di solito non mi impressiona troppo), colpita dagli attori (diciamocelo: Chris Pine è una bella visione), dalla sceneggiatura, dal montaggio, dalla storia soprattutto.
Gratificata nell’idolatria di Abrams da Nyota Uhura che chiede uno Slusho (uno Slusho! Uno Slusho! …e se non sapete di cosa sto parlando ripassetevi la storia del viral di Cloverfield e poi vergognatevi perché non siete degni di J. J. ), gratificata anche dalle musiche – immediatamente riconoscibili – di Michael Giacchino e da un altro inevitabile deja vu da Lost dato dai flash forward.
Il tutto oltre all’incontenibile emozione di (ri)vedere Leonard Nimoy nei panni di Spock.
Abrams, poi, sempre attento ai fan e all’ormai celebre copiosa produzione di slash fanfiction sui presunti intrecci amorosi tra Kirk e Spock, li “sessualizza” fortemente (soprattutto il secondo, come notano i sempre ottimi ragazzi di io9).
Il finale, poi, con una prevedibile ripresa dall’esterno dell’Enterprise e la voce fuoricampo: “Spazio, ultima frontiera…” è stato un tripudio. Ero incontenibilmente entusiasta.

Insomma, questo post voleva celebrare un ritorno (alla ragione evidentemente).
Era veramente da anni che, all’uscita di un film, non mi dicevo: “Lo voglio rivedere al cinema”. Ieri è successo.

…Springinskleefeld, um genau zu sein. So heisst er/es nämlich, der/das Film/Monster Cloverfield. Auch bekannt als Klöpfie, wie ihn seine Mutti nennt. (Ja, denn das Monster aus Cloverfield ist nämlich ein Babymonster, das durchdreht und new york zerstört weil es gerade geschlüpft ist und seine Mutti nicht da ist – und das ist kein Witz, das stammt von einem offiziellen Statement hehe)

Und für Alle die nicht verstehen worum’s geht: Es geht um Cloverfield – Der wackeldibackel Film produziert von J.J. Abrams, dem Schöpfer abgesetzter Serienhits (siehe Lost und Alias) – Auch bekannt als Blair Witch + Spezialeffekte.
Wer immernoch keinen Durchblick hat… Es gibt einen Trailer!

Ja, der ganze Film ist mit einer Laienkamera gefilmt. Viele Zuschauer verliessen bei den Premieren schnell den Saal aufgrund aufkeimender Überlkeit.
Worum geht’s???

Nun Klöpfie, das Monsterbaby, godzilliert die Stadt New York – zufälligerweise tut es das gerade während der Abschiedsparty von Rob. Rob der kleine heisse Stecher geht nämlich nach Japan, weil er dort Vizepräsident wird (wovon auch immer). Klöpfie klöpft aber, wie gesagt, dummerweise auch an die Partytür und schon bald sind fünf der Partystatisten befördert worden und rennen nun schreiend durch die Stadt. Natürlich immer mit der Kamera vor der Nase (Die Aussage, dass man immernoch aufnimmt, weil man den Menschen das zeigen muss ist fade [Man erinnere sich an blair-witch heather's Begründung, warum sie immernoch weiterfilmt - Die war genau so fahl] – man sollte bei solchen Filmen die Begründung weglassen, weil es keinen sinnvollen Grund gibt).
Der Film springt von Monsterszene zu Monsterszene, dazwischen gebrabbel und gewackel, das einen kaum interessiert (obwohl man da ab und an den heissen Rob sieht) – Gespielt von mittelmässigen Schauspielern, die noch nie ein Mensch zuvor gesehen hat (Womit wir einen weiteren Abrams Film angepriesen hätten).

Ok zusammengefasst: Fahle Story, fast schlechtes schauspielering, verbrauchtes Szenario, nur halbinnovative Filmtechnik…
… Warum sage ich dann:
Cloverfield (a.k.a. Klöpfie) ist mein neuer Lieblingsfilm!!

Warum sage ich das???
Die Stimmung, die Spannung… die halbinnovative Wir-tun-so-als-hätte-das-ein-Zivilist-aufgenommen-Filmtechnik gibt sich die perfekte Ehre. Noch nie hat mich die intensität eines Filmes so zerdrückt wie der realismus, welcher einem bei Klöpfie vermittelt wird. Auch wenn einige Spezialeffekte ganz einfach als solche zu erkennen sind, strahlt der Film trotzdem ein “ich-bin-echt”-Flair aus, welches schon fast beängstigend ist.

Ich liebe den Film, auch nachdem ich ihn Heute zum zweiten mal gesehen habe bin ich zutiefst beeindruckt – und verstört. Denn das schafft der Film wie kein anderer (ausser halt eben Blair witch) er verstört die Sinne – Ich wartete schon lange auf einen Film der sowas bei mir (wieder) schafft.

… Lustig war noch, dass ich offenbar der einzige Mensch im Kino war, der den Film mochte. “Superscheissfilm war das”, tönte es aus der einen Ecke. “Das war ja mal wieder Gehirnverschwendung”, aus der anderen. “Und dafür wird man bezahlt”, sagte man hinter uns. Und ich sass da und sagte: Verdammt, und wenn ich der einzige Mensch auf der Welt bin: Ich liebe diesen Film.

Mein Maindude, der mich netterweise ins kino begleitete (Gut, ich zwang ihn… trotzdem), fand den Film aber auch disturbing – nicht brilliant und cool wie ich, sondern disturbing… ein schlechter Film, meinte er, aber disturbing.

Slusho es una empresa de refrescos japonesa ficticia creada por J.J.Abrams.

Lo que más destaca de Slusho es que, según la historia que cuentan en su página web, el principal ingrediente que lleva se consigue en lo más fondo y helado del océano. Además, en la sección de distribución descubrimos que esta empresa es subsidiaria de Tagruato, lo que hace sospechar entre la relación de la extracción submariba de Tagruato y el ingrediente de Slusho.

Este ingrediente es nombrado varias veces, pero se aclara algo sobre este en una de las fotos de www.1-18-08.com, en la que se lee una receta en japonés en el reverso. El nombre del ingrediente es Kaitei No Mitsu, que se traduce, más o menos, como “nectar del fondo marino”.

Otra vez más se ve una relación entre todo esto, Tagruato, Slusho, el nectar, el monstruo…. todos tienen cosas en común, y podemos elaborar teorías que parecen evidentes, pero la verdadera relación aun no es conocida, es el misterio principal.

Bueno, como veo que los artículos de Cloverfield son los que, con mucha diferencia, tienen más éxito del blog (tanto que he hasta he creado una nueva catergoría solo para estos), vamos a empezar una serie con pistas, respuestas, aclaraciones e información relevante que vayamos encontrando. Parte III/III: Las claves de Cloverfield

En esta última parte de una serie de tres artículos sobre Cloverfield vamos a analizar las pistas (o al menos de las que me he dado cuenta o leido) que se nos dejan en la película, asi que cuidado porque este artículo contiene spoilers.

Comencemos por repasar los personajes que nos importan en el análisis, Rob es el protagonista, a quién le montan la fiesta de despedida, Beth es su novia, Jason su hermano y Hud quién graba todo. Además conviene saber que J.J.Abrams es el productor y uno de los principales cabezas pensantes de todo este puzzle Cloverfield.

Slusho: En principio Slusho es una marca de refrescos japonesa, nada más. El problema es que Slusho ya ha aparecido en Alias (serie producida por Abrams) y en Heroes (con la que la conexión no está tan clara), y ya es sabido que es una empresa virtual creada por Arabams.
Si entramos en la web de Slusho descubrimos algunas cosas interesantes. En la sección que habla sobre la historia del refresco, encontramos datos interesantes; en resumen se nos cuenta que en japón había una chica a la que le encantaba mezclar sabores para crear nuevos, pero que sabía que le faltaba algo asi como el “sabor definivito”, y que un día se fue a buscarlo y nunca volvió. Su hijo dejó la empresa a su primo, por el dolor que le causaba el recuerdo, pero un día soñó donde estaba ese sabor definitivo que su madre buscaba, y aqui viene lo curioso, fue “en lo más hondo y helado del océano”. Fue a buscarlo y asi creó Slusho.
Recordemos que en Cloverfiled, la teoría más probable es que el monsturo venga del fondo del océano. Habiendo relacionado ya a Abrams con Slusho, y al refresco con el monstruo, ¿no es demasiada casualidad?
Pues bien, aqui una evidencia dentro de la película:

Resulta que Jason lleva puesta una camiseta de Slusho (la cuál se puede comprar en la web del refresco, sin ánimo publicitario) que se deja ver bastantes veces a lo largo de la película (perdón por la calidad, pero el hecho de que solo esté disponible en el cine complica conseguir material bueno).

Lo que cae al agua: Durante toda la película se van viendo cortes de lo que estaba grabado previamente en la cinta (o tarjeta…), imagenes de Rob y Beth, pero la que más a dado que hablar es la final, cuando acaba la grabación de la destrucción de Manhattan, dónde aparecen los dos en una noria. Lo primero que aparece es un plano general de la feria en la playa, con el mar al fondo, y resulta que se ve algo caer. Quizás no se perciba en un primer visionado, pero si es cierto que algo cae del cielo al mar. La calidad de los videos que hay por la web de este momento es tan mala que no se distingue nada, la gente lo marca con circulitos pero parece que nos intentan engañar, pero es debido a la mala calidad de las grabaciones tomadas de la pantalla del cine.
Lo primero que se supuso sobre este objeto es lo que parece evidente, el monsturo es un extraterrestre que cae del cielo para días después arrasar con Nueva York. Pero debido a la gran cantidad de marketing viral que ha aparecido y a las diversas informaciones y soplos, se rumorea que lo que cae al mar es un satélite humano, concretamente de una empresa llamada TAGRUATO.

TAGRUATO: ¿Es nuevo este nombre? ¿Aparece por primera vez cuando nos hablan del satélite? Para algunos quizás si, pero lo cierto es que en web de Slusho, en el apartado de distribución, encontramos que la empresa encargada de tal fin es, nada más y nada menos que, TAGRUATO. En la web de TAGRUATO tambien encontramos links hacia la de Slusho (por cierto, en español no carga). Además aparece mucha información curiosa en su web, pero lo que sobretodo destaca es lo interesados que están en “investigar el fondo oceánico” con sus “taladros especializados” para estos lugares.
Si sois seguidores de Perdidos (serie producida por J.J.Abrams) sabreis que Dharma es una empresa iniciativa que el productor creó (como con Slusho o Tagruato) para esta serie. El parecido no es asombroso, pero si vemos ciertos rasgos similares en los logos de Tagruato y Dharma:

Sigue grabando: Cuando comienzan los créditos la cámara sigue grabando. Se oye un ruido de fondo, un ruido de que no hay nada. Y al rato comienza la música, pero al final del todo, cuando ya casi van a acabar los créditos vuelve la grabación (solo sonora) y oimos a Rob decir “Help us”. Es increible, sigue vivo y pide socorro… ¿o no? Resulta que si le damos la vuelta al audio se oye todavía más claro “Is’s still alive”, o “Sigue vivo”. Parece ser que el ataque no ha acabado con nuestro amigo, ¿que será de él?

¿Qué soporte usas?: Al principio de la película se nos informa de que vamos a ver un video que se encontró en Central Park y ha sido extraido de una tarjeta SD (las tarjetas de memoria de las cámaras). Sin embargo, a lo largo de la película se nombra varias veces “cinta”, dando por hecho que se estaba grabando en ese tipo de soporte. Además, los cortes son más bien típicos de una cinta, no de una tarjeta. ¿Fallo del guión o pieza del puzzle?

Las preguntas: ¿Tendrá alguna relación la busqueda de ese ingrediente para Slusho con el monsturo? ¿O tal vez dormía en el fondo oceánico y quién ha provocado que se despierte es Tagruato? ¿Significa algo el satélite que cae al oceáno al final de la película? ¿Es casualidad que Rob se vaya a ir a trabajar de videpresidente a una empresa de JAPON? ¿Será Slusho? ¿Será Tagruato?

La verdad es que esta pelicula ha dado mucho de que hablar desde meses antes de su estreno, pero ahora ya estrenada y todo sigue apareciendo misterios, de hecho aca vez que una busca mas encuentra mas y mas.

En ella encontraremos algunas imagenes algo reveladoras, vienen imagenes de la fiesta de despedida, y algunas escenas de la pelicula sin embargo aparece  lo que parece una cazeria de algun monstruo marino y una imagen de un chef japones sirviendo ¿algo?.

Bueno aqui viene lo bueno, existe una empresa japonesa llamada Tagruato.

Tagruato es una empresa la cual une en un colectivo a ingenieros, cientificos y hombres de negocios. Y la cual se encarga de hacer perforacciones en busca de petroleopara investigaciones en el campo de le energia, medicina, etc.

En la pagina sale un mapa interactivo en el cual se puede ver que perforaban muy cerca de New York. (Lugar donde el Monstruo ataco)

Sin embargo algunos dias hubo problemas en una de sus plataformas petroleras la cual fue destruida por completa, la noticia salio en varios idiomas aqui pueden ver el video en español.

En el video se aprecia la destrucción, e incluso se oyen algunos ruidos extraños.

Otra cosa que cabe mencionar  es que en varios periodicos de estados unidos se menciona la visita del presidente de Tagruato Ganu Yoshida a New York, donde entre sus planes esta ver la localizacion de una nueva planta de Slusho en Estados Unidos..

Pero que es Slusho?

Slusho es la principla empresa que apoya en sus perforaciones a tagruato.

Es una empresa japonesa dedicada a la realizacion de bebidas exoticas  de vegetales mezclados que segun dice la pagina su creador Noriko Yoshida paso su vida buscando el ingrediente definitivosin embargo desaparecio sin dejar rastro. Su hijo siguio con la busqueda y encontro el ingrediente en las profundidades del mar.

La bebida se ha hecho muy popular, un amigo de Rob en Cloverfield trae una playera con el slogan de Slusho y hasta los heroes no pueden dejar de tomarla

Lo curioso es que en las precauciones dice que Slusho es tan fantastico que hara a tu estomago explotar..(Marlene?)

Claramente es una bebida inventada utilizada en series como Heroes, Lost y Alias el problema es saber si todo esta relacionado con cloverfield o hay algo mas.

Sigamos con algunas otras cuestiones..

El famoso Myspace! pues si cada personaje de la pelicula tiene uno con varias fotos, descripciones y comentarios a simple vista parecen bastante reales, lo curioso de ellos es que su ultimo inicio de sesión fue el 18-01-08, el dia del ataque.

Aqui esta el de Rob al cual le gusta Muse! y  el cual en sus amigos principales estan los demas personajes.

Después de navegar un rato por las webs de publicidad viral de Cloverfield y otras webs informativas, he llegado a la siguiente conclusión:

Slusho es la bebida N° 1 de Japón y en su web se encuentra la historia de cómo se obtiene el ingrediente secreto de la bebida.

Noriko Yoshida dedicó su vida a la preparación de bebidas y mezclas de sabores fascinantes, de pequeña le decían la Pequeña Ballena por la cantidad de bebidas que era capaz de consumir, tanta era su fascinación con las bebidas, que se convirtió en una gran empresaria dedicada solo a la creación de refrescos.

Cada año intentaba superarse así misma buscando nuevos ingredientes alrededor del mundo, pero un día, en un viaje al océano perdió la vida y nunca se supo más de ella.

Su único hijo, Ganu, siguió los pasos de su madre, experimentando con nuevas mezclas, pero centrándose más en el campo de la ciencia y dejando la empresa a manos de su primo.

Ganu se convirtió en un investigador marino muy famoso, con un equipo de investigadores elite llamado el Grupo Tagruato, encargado perforaciones submarinas para la búsqueda de nuevos recursos.

Uno de los satélites de la compañía Tagruato cayó cerca de New York ( esto lo podemos ver en el vídeo final grabado por el protagonista ).
Durante la búsqueda del satélite en el mar, Ganu descubrió una sustancia en las profundidades del océano, una sustancia única y sin igual, el ingrediente que su madre siempre había buscado y por el cual murió.

Es aquí donde Ganu regresa con su primo y juntos crean SLUSHO, la bebida más fascinante jamás elaborada.

Durante las perforaciones de Tagruato se presento un accidente en una de las instalaciones, Tagruato se refiere a ese hecho como “Incidente de la Estación Chuai”.

Aquí es cuando se supone que despertaron al monstruo que ataca la ciudad, un bicho marino que ha crecido muchísimo gracias al ingrediente secreto que Ganu usa para su bebida.

El grupo T.I.D.O. Wave ( grupo de activistas y ecologistas que buscan destruir a Tagruato Corp ) viaja al lugar para descubrir que fue lo que paso, pero no encuentran nada, solo océano donde se supone debería de existir una gran y avanzada estación de perforaciones, no es sino hasta mucho después que salen al aire unos videos del hecho.

Rob, el protagonista de la película iba a viajar a Japón para trabajar como Vicepresidente en Tagruato, de ahí que varias personas en la fiesta llevaran camisetas de la famosa bebida.

Y por ahora eso es todo lo que he descubierto navegando por la red… Vosotr@s qué pensais?

A mi, por una parte me encanta esto de que la historia de las películas no se queden solamente en los cines y podamos seguir explorando en internet, cómics y demás. Pero por otra parte, creo que muchas de estas cosas deberían ser explicadas en la película, porque mucha gente no lo entenderá y no se dedicará a buscar información.

Rob und Beth hatten Sex miteinander. Das ist eine ziemliche Sensation, denn schließlich kennen sich die beiden schon seit der High School. Kein Wunder also, dass die Geschichte schnell die Runde macht und Robs Überraschungsparty zu verderben droht. Überhaupt lag die Sache mit Beth irgendwie schon den ganzen Abend in der Luft, man hätte nur genauer hinsehen müssen. Doch Rob hat Glück, denn bevor die Situation völlig aus dem Ruder läuft, wird die Stadt von einem Erdbeben erschüttert, das es in sich hat. Kurz darauf gibt es in der Ferne Explosionen zu sehen, und schließlich landet der Kopf der Freiheitsstatue mitten auf der Straße. Die Sache mit Beth ist also erst mal vergessen. Am Ende liegt New York in Schutt und Asche, und nur den Videoaufzeichnungen von Hud ist es zu verdanken, dass die Nachwelt hautnah miterleben kann, was sich in den wenigen Stunden dazwischen ereignet hat. Eigentlich war das Ganze ja als Abschieds- und Erinnerungs-Tape für Rob gedacht, den ein schickes Jobangebot nach Japan zieht (der Heimat der metropolenfeindlichen Seemonster). Jetzt aber sorgt dann doch etwas ganz anderes für bleibende Eindrücke (auch physisch), und das ist ziemlich groß, laut und nicht besonders gut auf New York, die New Yorker und die US Army zu sprechen.

Nach 1953 hatte sich die Stadt eigentlich ganz gut erholt und auch späteren Zerstörungsaktionen seitens schlecht gelaunter Seemonster exzellente städtebauliche Maßnahmen folgen lassen. Umso mehr wundert es, welche Schwierigkeiten der vergleichsweise geringfügige Schaden von Ground Zero da mit sich brachte – aber Schwamm drüber. Zum Glück gibt es von all diesen Ereignissen ja exzellentes Filmmaterial, und an diese Tradition schließt „Cloverfield“ erfreulicherweise an, wenn auch mit ziemlich stark verwackelten Camcorder-Aufnahmen – aber in so einem Fall ist man für jede Dokumentation dankbar. Hätte man nur auf die Warnungen des Wissenschaftlers Tom Nesbitt gehört (der immer ein bisschen aussah wie Paul Hubschmid), dessen frühzeitige Warnung vor dem Riesenmonster aus der Arktis vielleicht Schlimmeres hätte verhindern können. Vermutlich hatten Atomtests die urzeitliche Spezies (einen Rhedosaurus) wieder zum Leben erweckt, aufgetaut oder schlicht neu erschaffen – wer weiß das schon? Folge war jedenfalls die erste monstermäßige Zerstörung Manhattans, der die Army nur knapp beikommen konnte. Unter dem etwas pathetischen Titel „The Beast from 20.000 Fathoms“ hat Eugène Lourié diese Geschichte dankenswerter Weise überliefert und damit eine eigene Tradition der Berichterstattung in Gang gesetzt. Ein Jahr später schon ereignete sich Ähnliches dann zum ersten Mal in Tokio, und man muss sagen, die Japaner hatten es weniger leicht, denn so einfach ließ sich das Problem dort nicht bekämpfen – das Monster kam (einem allgemeinen Konsens gemäß vermutlich gestärkt durch eine gesunde Ladung Restradioaktivität von Hiroshima und Nagasaki) einfach immer wieder, und zwar so lange, bis es 1998 schließlich die Nase voll hatte von den Japanern, es seinem Vorgänger gleich tat und sich auf den Weg nach Manhattan machte. Aber auch diesmal leistete die Army ganze Arbeit und konnte in letzter Minute das Schlimmste verhindern. Jetzt also, zehn Jahre später, müssen die Jungs noch einmal ran, denn schon wieder hat es ein naher Verwandter aus dem Meer auf die heimliche Welthauptstadt abgesehen.

Irgendwie ist zwar nicht ersichtlich, was die wenig friedfertigen Amphibien aus der Urzeit gegen Großstadtarchitektur haben, aber vermutlich ist es der Druck einer diffusen Zivilisationsangst, der sie immer wieder um sich schlagen lässt. Und vielleicht liegt darin ja auch eine heimliche Gemeinsamkeit, die der Zuschauer mit dem Monster teilt, denn irgendwie bewundert er es auch für seinen rücksichtslosen Umgang mit denjenigen kulturellen Errungenschaften, die aus dörflichen Siedlungen echte Metropolen gemacht haben. Wie sehr etwa die Japaner ihren Heimsucher verehren, konnte J.J. Abrams anlässlich einer PR-Tour in dem Land feststellen, dass seinen Monstergeschichten mit dem „Kaiju Eiga“ sogar ein eigenes Genre gewidmet hat. Die Unmengen an Spielzeug seien es gewesen, die ihm die Rolle des Monsters für das kollektive Bewusstsein der Japaner zum ersten Mal vor Augen geführt und ganz nebenbei klargemacht hätten, dass da in der amerikanischen Kultur eine deutliche Lücke klafft. Glaubt man der Geschichte, so kann man vielleicht auch hören, wie das Radwerk in Abrams Hinterkopf zwar leise, da gut geölt, aber dennoch merklich in Bewegung kam. Der Mann nämlich, der zum damaligen Zeitpunkt mit „Mission Impossible 3“ seine erste, kassentechnisch eher verhalten zündende Regiearbeit für die große Leinwand promotete, hat ein ganz gutes Gespür für den wirksamen Umgang mit popkulturellen Mythen und die Art und Weise, wie man sie zu Gelddruckmaschinen umfunktioniert. Denn Abrams, seines Zeichens Lichtgestalt des US-Fernsehens und derzeit heißeste Zukunftshoffnung des kommerziellen Erzählkinos auf amerikanischem Boden, leidet als Produzent (wenn auch noch nicht als Regisseur) seit einer Weile am Midas-Syndrom. Dieses zeichnet sich bekanntermaßen dadurch aus, dass alles, was man anfasst, unmittelbar zu Gold wird. Und so muss es wohl auch mit dem Godzilla-Spielzeug gelaufen sein, das ihm eine echte Inititalzündung verpasst hatte, denn die Einspielergebnisse von „Cloverfield“ übertrafen am US-Startwochenende sogar noch die Erwartungen der Analysten.

Eine bloße Wiederauflage der klassischen Monster-vs-Metropole-Kontroverse hätte jedoch nicht ausreichen können, um ein breites Publikum bis an den Rand der Hysterie zu mobilisieren – jedenfalls nicht ohne das vielfach bewährte Abrams-Prinzip. Und das funktioniert so: Erstens, verspreche Unfassbares, aber zeige nichts Konkretes. Zweitens, wiederhole Erstens. Drittens, wenn die Nachfrage für Konkretes zu groß wird, lenke ab mit weiteren Versprechungen. Klingt einfach, ist es aber nicht, denn damit Erstens bis Drittens möglichst lange funktionieren, ist ein hohes Maß an absurdem Einfallsreichtum und Fabulierlust notwendig, damit das ganze Gebäude nicht wie ein Kartenhaus (denn das ist es nun einmal) in sich zusammenfällt. Wer sich hier an David Lynchs schulemachenden Mystery-Irrsinn „Twin Peaks“ erinnert fühlt, ist bereits auf der richtigen Spur. Denn von dort ist es nur ein kleiner Schritt zu den Rambaldi-Artefakten, Dharma-Initiativen und sonstigen sinnfreien MacGuffins, für die Abrams zu Recht eine Menge Lorbeeren einheimst, und deren Erklärungslinien sich erst im Unendlichen treffen. Sich gegenseitig mal potenzierende, mal neutralisierende oder gar auch gänzlich ausschließende Erzählstränge, wie sie Abrams´ Erfolgsprodukte „Alias“ (solange er noch Interesse an der Show hatte) und „Lost“ in ihren besten Phasen praktisch unaufhaltsam vorantrieben und -treiben, haben nicht wenig zu demjenigen Ruf beigetragen, den Amerikas derzeit cleverster Showrunner in jedes neue Projekt vorauseilend mit hineinträgt.

Der Unterschied zwischen Kinofilm und TV-Show ist allerdings in etwa der von Diesseits und Jenseits. Erstere sind ihrer Natur nach nämlich endlich, und im Vergleich dazu kommt das Medium Fernsehen mit seinen Unsterblichkeits-Formaten dem Abrams-Prinzip eindeutig entgegen. Für das endliche Medium Film also bedarf es deshalb einer möglichst breiten zeitlichen Ausdehnung von Versprechen und Erwartung, und die kann entweder nur in der Vorab-Installation von Sequels liegen oder aber in der Befeuerung von Antizipationen. „Cloverfield“ entschied sich für die letztere Variante und brannte sich Mitte 2007 in die Köpfe seines Zielpublikums mithilfe eines vorab fertig gestellten Teasers ein, der das Abrams-Prinzip bis auf die Knochen verinnerlicht hatte. Camcorder-Aufnahmen der Party vom Beginn des Films, das vermeintliche Erdbeben, Panik und der Kopf der Freiheitsstatue auf dem Asphalt (auch ganz ohne Kurt Russel). Kein Titel, keine Credits, sondern lediglich eine kryptische Internetadresse. Unter dieser dann eine Reihe von Fotografien, die man stundenlang anklicken und verschieben konnte, ohne dass sich wirklich etwas ergab, was Klarheit verschaffte. Der Virus aber war auf den Weg gebracht und setzte die einschlägigen Foren und sozialen Netzwerke heftig unter Strom.

Virales Marketing nennt sich bekanntermaßen diese Variante der kalkulierten Hysterisierung, und im Fall von „Cloverfield“ funktionierte sie so gut, dass sich das Abrams-Prinzip mithilfe spärlich gestreuter Infos und spurverwischender Spielereien (etwa um das fiktive Getränk „Slusho“, das einen direkten Bezug zu „Alias“ implizierte) ziemlich erfolgreich auf das Zielpublikum und dessen Spekulationswillen übertragen ließ. Der Plan ging auf, und der Film aus der (beauftragten) Feder von Drew Goddard und unter der versierten Regie von Matt Reeves, beides langjährige Weggefährten des Produzenten, landete unter dem mittlerweile liebgewonnenen Tarntitel, der nichts, aber auch rein gar nichts mit der Geschichte zu tun hat, mühelos auf Platz 1 der US-Kinocharts. Dass eine ausgedehnte „klassische“ Kampagne hier allerdings zusätzlich ihr Übriges tat (inklusive etwa einer enervierenden Vollausbuchung von MySpace), darf man dabei nicht übersehen.

Die etwas ernüchternde Tatsache nun, dass der Film seiner ins Unermessliche hochgeschraubten Erwartungshaltung unmöglich gerecht werden kann, liegt in der Natur der Sache begründet und erklärt auch den raschen Abfall des Zuschauerinteresses bereits in der zweiten Woche. Wo Abrams´ TV-Shows nie gezwungen sind, Kompromisse im Sinn von Erklärungen einzugehen, muss der Film irgendwann nun einmal auf der Leinwand erscheinen, und da kann er nicht anders als hinter den Erwartungen zurück bleiben. Das ist die unvermeidliche Kehrseite der viralen Medaille und im Grunde dem Produkt selber gegenüber eigentlich nicht fair. Was sich nämlich ein halbes Jahr lang zunehmend als Monsterfilm verkauft hatte, erweist sich schließlich eher als klug gemachter Thriller aus der Sicht einiger weniger Charaktere, die der Katastrophe zu entkommen versuchen, ohne dabei allerdings einen der ihren auf der Strecke lassen zu wollen. Die CGIs sind dabei vor allem deshalb so beeindruckend, weil sie nicht selbstgefällig in den Vordergrund rücken, sondern sich stattdessen wie selbstverständlich einfügen und durch die permanent verwackelten, verkanteten, ein- und auszoomenden Handkamera-Aufnahmen (wir befinden uns ja in einer fiktiven Camcorder-Dokumentation) einen besonders realistischen Effekt mit sich bringen – vermutlich kein einfacher Job für die Matchmaker, die hier mit der digitalen Simulation beschäftigt waren.

Was beginnt wie eine studentische Stilübung, wird so nach den ersten, quälend langweiligen rund 20 Minuten zu einem gut durchdachten Blockbuster-Experiment, das sich durch seinen (leicht forcierten) formalen Realismus merklich von seinen inhaltlichen Vorbildern abhebt, ohne sie jedoch verleugnen zu wollen – ganz im Gegenteil (nicht umsonst etwa treibt es Beth und Rob ausgerechnet nach Coney Island). Allerdings: um die Beklemmung mit voller Wirkungskraft spürbar zu machen, die hinter dem durchaus reizvollen Ansatz steht (und der so manchen Kinobetreiber in den USA aus Angst vor möglichen Schadensersatzklagen dazu antrieb, im Foyer auf die Übelkeit verursachende Handkameratechnik aufmerksam zu machen), bedarf es auch des zugehörigen medialen Umfeldes. So entfaltet der Trailer auf dem PC-Monitor etwa ein weitaus größeres Unbehagen als der gesamte Film auf der eher entfesselnden Großleinwand. Das hat mit dem Medium selber und seinen zugehörigen Sehgewohnheiten zu tun, und so ziemlich jeder, der hier eilig etwas von einer allgemeinen „Youtubisierung“ faselt, auf welche die Filmemacher rekurrieren (oder welchen theoretischen Bezug man hier auch immer herstellen mag), übersieht bei allem Eifer, dass die Bedrohung des fiktiven Realismus, den sich der Film zunutze macht, notwendigerweise auch seiner angestammten Plattform bedarf, um vollständig zu funktionieren. Und das ist vielleicht der klügste Schachzug des Projektes, denn mit der DVD-Veröffentlichung und TV-Auswertung wird sich das Potential dieses cleveren Films erst gänzlich entfalten – und dann über Jahre hinweg funktionieren. Abrams ist eben immer noch Fernseh-Macher.

It’s all about finding ways to make an old penny shiny again.

For every horror or sci-fi hit movie, there are usually a zillion imitators waiting in the wings to drain the fun out of the experience — like letting drunken Uncle Arnold jump into your brand new wading pool with his golf shoes on. See, I had the pleasure of seeing “The Blair Witch Project” before the haters got on board and wet themselves trying to be the first to say how bad they thought it was. But, I loved it. Now, before the haters start guzzling gallons of Gatorade for “Cloverfield,” I want to go on record saying I loved this too.

So there.

Yes, it’s hard to make a tired genre seem new again, but this one did it. And it did it in a very clever way by taking something that obviously had bloated special effect potential but squeezing it through something wholly unexpected. I know, that sounds ridiculously vague, but, trust me, there’s a reason.

First of all, the title means nothing. It’s like the government didn’t think up “The Manhattan Project” as a way of announcing to the world “Hey, we’re making an atomic bomb over here!” It’s deliberately mysterious because from the movie’s first frame the titles alone pose something ominous. Basically, it means this is a top secret video somebody found in the rubble of what was once New York City and we’re seeing it from the perspective of a strange and probably bleak future in which the stuff we see is like viewing long lost home movies of the Big Apple skyline punctuated by those two gleaming towers.

As the movie opens, we are introduced to a group of friends who are throwing a going away party for a guy named Rob (Michael Stahl-David), who has just landed a great job in Japan. Rob can’t wait for a young woman named Beth (Odette Yustman) to show up. In clips on the tape we see that Beth and Rob had the beginnings of a sweet romance, but something happened between them. Suddenly, Beth does arrive, but she’s with some other dude, which, of course, creates all sorts of melodrama.

We witness this through the lens of a video camera that was originally handed to a kind of dufus named Hud (T.J. Miller) as a way of recording testimonials wishing good luck to Rob from all his buddies.

Then just as events at the party start looking like a cross between “The O.C.” and “Big Brother,” all hell breaks loose and what was once a fun party becomes a fight for survival. Something huge and scary is ripping apart buildings and has even flung Lady Liberty’s head down the street looking like somebody played Whack-A-Mole with Uncle Arnold’s noggin.

In much the same way Steven Spielberg brought “The War of the Worlds” down to earth, this move reduces an epic “Gojira”-sized catastrophe to human terms. At first, Rob, his brother Jason (Mike Vogel), Jason’s girlfriend Lily (Jessica Lucas), a party guest named Marlena (Lizzy Caplan) and Hud try to evacuate from the city amid a disquieting scene that recalls the real life horror of Sept. 11. Then, Rob gets a garbled cell phone call from Beth, who sounds injured and trapped somewhere back the way they came. Choices have to be made and the most unbelievable experience in their lives is captured by Hud’s camera.

My only quibble is that I wished Hud would’ve taken his role as documentarian a little more seriously, because a few steady shots might’ve helped make the struggle for survival a bit less dizzying. Still, for fluff and a few good sized jolts, this isn’t bad. Not bad at all.

Giant monster!  Scared people running away!  The military with their tanks and their bombs and their bombs and their guns having no effect!  General chaos!

I think it’s great to finally have a giant monster movie that actually lives up to the hype surrounding it.   As a kid growing up, I used to watch all the Godzilla movies during Shock Theatre with Dr. Creep and all of the Sunday afternoon matinees.  Yeah, those movies were super-cheesy and they weren’t even in English, but I ate them up and always wanted more.  It was cool to see King Kong fight Godzilla, and it was cool to see Mechagodzilla and the Smog monster and Mothra and all the others stomping Japan (always Japan) flat every weekend.  Never mind that they were all essentially the same movie.  It was still cool.  Given the situation, one wonders how Japan was able to rebuild so quickly every time Godzilla decided to make an appearance.  Still, these movies established the basic premise for monster movies, and Cloverfield is no real exception.  It just does it better.  It justifies the hype.

Like everyone else, I first heard about Cloverfield during the teaser trailer before Transformers this past summer.  I thought it was intriguing.  It had been a long time since we had a giant monster movie, and I didn’t feel like there had ever been a good one.  This one was supposedly shot from the POV of the people living it, and to me that meant realism previously unseen.

The basic plot revolves around a small group of twenty-somethings throwing a party that looks like an Abercrombie & Fitch commercial for a guy named Rob, who just received a vice-president position at the Slusho! corporation in Japan and is soon to be going away.  There’s also a back story about how he slept with his BFF Beth about a month prior, and their coming to terms with the effect that had on their friendship.  All of this becomes second priority however when a Giant Monster from the Deep attacks New York city and everyone starts running for their lives.  Rob gets a frantic phone call from Beth, and despite being seemingly intelligent, decides to try and rescue her by traversing the monster-infested island and dragging his brother’s girlfriend, his best friend Hud, and some chick that was at the party along with him. 

I won’t spoil the rest of the movie, but suffice it to say there’s lots of running and screaming and exploding (hehe… remember the chick from the party) and destruction.  The entire incident is viewed from the video camera that Hud refuses to drop, so everything is kinda shaky and realistic.  There are lots of scenes that are dark and confusing, but all in all it simply adds to the realism that makes this monster movie unique.  You literally see New York being destroyed, with falling building and flying cars, and you even see the occasional glimpse of the monster as he stomps his way through the city.

This is NOT the Cloverfield monster.  I don’t want to give you the wrong impression, but I was originally informed that the monster would be based on a mutated whale.  This picture made its rounds on the Internet in the months preceding the film, and it made sense.  Any film that was semi-based in reality should have a creature that was semi-based in reality.  Made it all more likely, I think.  I was all excited at this prospect, and I even convinced my friend that I believed this interpretation would be correct, and she got excited too.  Unfortunately, I was wrong.

The picture also contains what the artist called the “monster louse”.  This idea was based on a real world fact that whales have forms of sea lice that live on them, and I’m happy to say, this little plot device is in the movie.  There’s a scene where the monster is rubbing his back on a building, and all of these creepy, spidery-like man-sized creatures fall off and begin attacking everyone in sight.  These make for an interesting villain in the movie aside from the monster, and there are several scenes that deal with these things in creepy and unexpected ways.

This is a much better realization of the actual monster in the film.  It’s still not 100% correct, but it’s pretty close.  You do get to see a few good shots of Clovey, although most of the time he’s behind buildings or the camera is shaking and stuff.  There is one exceptional shot, from a very interesting perspective, but I won’t give it away here.

So will there be a sequel?  Lots of people have speculated that there will be, and some have taken to pointing out certain aspects of the film that would lead to sequels, like the fact that in the flashback scene at the amusement park with the happy couple, you see a silvery pod of some sort crash into the ocean behind them  (This is actually been confirmed as being a corporate satellite from the Slusho! corporation, and NOT an alien spaceship).  There’s also a garbled transmission at the end of the film, after the credits, that says “It’s still alive” amidst a burst of static, and the even more frightening aspect of Clovey only being a juvenile member of his species.  The producers have stated that in today’s digital age, lots of people have camcorders and digital phones and that there were lots of eyewitnesses to the event, so coupled with the fact that the movie made $41 million over the opening weekend, you can bet there will be a Cloverfield 2 at some point.  Could you imagine watching an entire movie shot from the perspective of an iPhone?  Me either.

I personally think that a sequel would ruin the spirit of this film.  It’s unique as it is.  Another film set at the same time with a different group of people using a different camera would just be a re-hash.  Unnecessary, in my opinion.

Let Cloverfield stand alone.  It is the monster movie we’ve all been waiting for since we were kids.  It was exceptional in my eyes, and I think it is a brilliant piece of filmmaking.

In my list of most anticipated movies of 2007, Cloverfield made that list.  The baby of producer J.J Abrams who wanted to create the American version of a monster to rival the Godzilla and King Kongs of yesteryear.  To the ones who went to this movie and are now complaining of how the movie was shot, shut up.  J.J Abrams (LOST CREATOR), producer, and Matt Reeves, director, didn’t want another run-of-the-mill monster movie where the movie starts out with the explanation of what the monstrosity is. What is the fun in that?  If that is your cup of tea there are like 40 of those at the movie store, go rent it and choke on your tea.  This is a new-look, new-age, rendition of the monster movie that ends with you having more questions than answers, masterfully done.  Cloverfield is to monster movie as the Blair Witch Project was to the ghost story.  Either you loved or hated The Blair Witch Project (The first one of course), and I do feel audiences will either love or hate Cloverfield. (Does America need anymore division? Hah)  Cloverfield provides an intuitive assault that leaves you, whether you do love or hate it, yearning for further information about the movie.  Cloverfield puts you in the middle of something that, in that moment, you believe could really happen.  I compare it to holding your breath for 90 minutes, because I can’t actually remember breathing while watching it.  The illusion of the movie that sucks you in is that all that is happening is happening as we see it.  All the while supplying superb special-effects that are jaw dropping to say the very least.  A YouTube panic attack synopsizes it the best, however if you are looking for a “steady-camera-shot” movie this won’t be for you, if you are looking for something new, something different, that leaves you excited for what is to come then this movie is yours.
