I have recently shifted to a small town a.k.a, a big village. This town is the prototype of any other small town of India. Apart from the landscape dotted with unplanned urban monstrosities or the usually crowded roads with cars and other animals! There are a few other trends that have been noticed which with my experience of many a small town is most likely to be true to all.

Gym Maaro Gym!

There is a growing stress on beefed-up bodies and men’s Tee shirts now give ‘tight’ competition to women’s tank tops, in the gallis of cloney’s of small towns. If the butchered carcasses on display in the market weren’t palatable, now you also have the “Axe’cessorised” youth, whose body of work is their body! They are quite usually in their twenties and most certainly school dropouts who are looking for a talent scout looking for them. Being fit is one thing but being beefy is a trend that requires deliberation second only to the issue of ‘the shirtless Salman’.

Confused Desis: Now what was that about American Born Confused Desis’? There is an indigenous variety, right here in the town heartland! Here the youth are first generation learners and have the tough choice between English and Hindi abuses. Needless to say, they pick both! There exists a constant clash between their “sound” middle backgrounds and their ‘unsound’ present Compromise or… stay with the LOSER tag, a Scarlett letter!

Open or close? The male gaze is much wider than anywhere else. In cities women have the ‘couldn’t care less’ attitude and in villages there is hardly anybody left. Internet kiosks have become the modern- day Banyan tree meeting joints. But the real dirty picture is that the there is also a growth and a closed-openness for adult entertainment. Though there is an easy accessibility at the click of a button yet this hasn’t resulted in decreasing number of roadside Romeos. Age of course is not a factor in this dynamic, they come in all shapes and sizes the only saving grace is that they are fortunately not interested in cows, still! It makes one wonder with the mass media becoming open about a certain kind of content and its broadcast why have the minds of the men become closed? Courtesy them, even the salwar kameez clad girl on the street walks in guilt of being a woman!

Disaster management-a disaster: A word about the time-bombs small towns are. The small town is sitting on an unofficial time bomb, which threatens to explode anytime. Be it the environmental hazard the ploythene masses or the illegal construction precariously hanging on an earthquake prone mountain. Go anywhere and the safety is thrown to the winds, after all, we are living so close to the God’s in the mountains! The ‘chalta hai’ attitude of the Great Indian is exemplified the best in mountain towns. It must be the air or perhaps the omnipresent ganja! If driving, mind the bus driver in front as it will halt anywhere except at the bus stop. Not to be left behind is the market place which is dotted with a criss-cross of wires giving the necessary illegal electricity. The less said about the parking conditions the better. Parking their behinds and their cars in the middle of the road is the birth right of every small towner! You dare open your mouth spouting out abuses like ‘civility’ and ‘courtesy of parking’! You’ll be easy meat at the hands of devout vegetarian butchers!

You may call it progress, but if it is at the cost of losing one’s identity by faking then it is better to stay stagnant! Identity crisis has taken a new meaning in the context of small towns. It is oscillating between the vernacular and the Hinglish, between a city and a village, between Brand and getting branded!

DISCLAIMER: This is not a diatribe against small towners. It is a concern and commentary on the collective consciousness of a small town of India and its physical manifestation.

Honda is pinning on the hope of countering the likes of Maruti Swift, Ford Figo and Hyundai i20 by r

Honda is pinning on the hope of countering the likes of Maruti Swift, Ford Figo and Hyundai i20 by retaining its status in the Indian car market. Similar to Tata Motors which offers financial assistance through its efforts, Honda is aiming to tap the regional and government owned banking sectors to secure financial aid for the customers. Even the co-operative banks too have been approached in this regard to cater to the needs of customers, said the VP. The move indicates that Honda is on the verge of rectifying the flaws occurred with its Jazz, which incurred a fall in sale by 40%with the sale of 3731 units during April-December 2010 period which was 6247 units in the same period of 2009.

Brio is the outcome of Honda’s 5-year stint in R&D to meet the exact demands and to suit the specific needs of the Indian customers and roads. As a 5-seater it cannot still meet the small car segment to face 10% tax despite 22% tax levied on larger sized vehicles. As per the specifications, cars having the measurement of less than 4 meters under 1200cc and 1500cc are to be deemed as small cars. The VP said that Brio will meet the demands in all ways to pose the challenge to Maruti Swift, i20, Figo andPolo and still lesser in price than its own Jazz premium hatch. Once the price is set to counter the likes of other players, he added, Honda will enter into those regions of dearth.
