It is Thursday and that means it’s time for another Palm Press. Palm (s palm) Press is our weekly look at the world of Palm. Some Pre owners have discovered the hard way that a bug in Palm’s profile backup service leaves them short some data. It seems that Palm’s Profile service can corrupt backup data, and users report the loss of contact and calendar data which must be recreated. Palm has acknowledged that a problem is affecting a “small number” of users.

Pre owners in the U.S. got webOS version 1.3.1 a while back, but those outside the U.S. had been left high and dry. That’s over now, with the latest version getting pushed out to phones that have not received the update prior. Version 1.3.1 was largely a maintenance release, with a new version of the Facebook app included.

Techmeme is a great way to keep up with the latest and greatest news in the tech world and they recently released a new mobile version of the site. The new version presents the content in a better format for phones, and is automatically invoked when it detects a supported mobile browser. The new format supports the Pre and Pixi browsers, offering a nicely formatted web page when surfing with those phones.

2 – Procure utilizar conectores soldados. Quanto maior o cabo, maior a perda.

A resposta é sim.

Me neither, but if I had, this unique clear cover for the iPhone (s aapl) screen might have fit the bill. The 4iThumbs is basically a clear plastic cover for the screen of the iPhone that has indentations where the keys are situated when the onscreen keyboard is in use.

That’s it. Of course, the landscape keyboard is vastly different than the portrait model so you’ll have to get the right 4iThumbs to fit the way you work. I guess you could just get one of each but at $19.95 for the pair you may just want to go with one. That will only save you $3 or $4, though.

So, as my friends know, I’m pretty much unhealthily obsessed with having whatever BlackBerry is new on the market.

Over this past week, the 9700 finally became available, and I took advantage of my premier status on AT&T to get one.

Judging from the press on the device, this is supposed to be the greatest thing since sliced bread and peanut butter. What I’m finding so far?

The trackpad really IS the greatest thing since sliced bread, but outside of that, for my purposes-99% email and listening to music in the nail salon, its no faster than my Tour. I guess the super fast processor is for some other features I’ll never use, but it’s nice to know they’re there.

I love the keyboard. While it’s smaller than the original Bold and the Tour, it has a very similar form factor, and I was typing error free within the first five minutes of using it.

It’s SMALL. Unlike it’s fat auntie, the original Bold, or it’s chunky cousin, the Tour. However, it still feels sturdy, and has a good grip in the hand. See the size comparison for the Tour and Bold 2 below:

If you had the old Bold-you will definitely love the camera. It’s the same one that came on the 8900 and the Tour, and it is marvelous. No more blurry shots of Mo Rivera in the Airport, or seeing Michael Kay as a spec in the broadcast booth. No friends, this camera takes REAL photos.

It also runs on OS 5.0.0.296, which is pretty similar to my Tour’s .230-except almost everything works.

The battery life is ridiculous. Wow. After it took me two days to run the battery down to zero, I am just going to put it on the charger tonight for the second time. It is so much better than the Bold, the Tour, or the 8900.

I got rid of most of my themes and have been using mostly 5.0 themes and themes built specifically for the 9700. So far so good. What do I like most about this device? Well, because I’m crazy, the white letters and numbers on the keys make me happier than the red from my Tour and T-Mobile 8900 keys. I can use pink wallpapers and not feel nauseous.

I’m hoping I don’t drop it before all the good cases come out. This is probably the most aesthetically pleasing Berry released to date.

I’ve ordered a Coveroo and will be using the holster that came in the box. Here’s hoping the good cases I’ve come to love will soon be made to fit the Bold.

If you’re in the market for a new BlackBerry and you use AT&T or T-Mobile, do yourself a favor, and get your hands on the Bold. You won’t regret it.

The Emblaze First Else (rotten name) uses a single thumb to manipulate all aspects of the interface which fans down the right side of the phone display. Lefties are left out in the cold as it definitely looks to only be manipulated with the right hand.

While the interface is new and refreshing, it looks like it would take some time to get used to. Actions are performed by swiping both down the screen with the thumb and left across the screen. It seems utilitarian in appearance, and a bit laggy at times.

Interestingly, the First Else is based on the Access Linux Platform (ALP), a mobile OS that seemed to have died a while back. That’s the platform started by Palm (s palm) way back when and then sold to Access in Japan.

Take a look at the videos that Engadget shot of the First Else, it’s totally new.

It’s Tuesday and that can only mean it’s time for our weekly feature, BlackBerry Buzz. The Buzz is where you’ll find out what’s been going on in the BlackBerry brambles. You’ll hear about everything that’s worth knowing in the awesome world of the BlackBerry. Research In Motion (s rimm) released version 3 of the BlackBerry Media Sync today that adds two-way photo syncing, better memory management and alerts when new photos are available for import. There are other things added into the mix, so if you are a user of media syncing, you’d better pick up the new version.

The BlackBerry Curve was the top-selling smartphone in the U.S. in the third quarter, according to NPD Group. The Curve topped the iPhone 3GS and 3G, due to high consumer demand for the BlackBerry. Lower prices going into the holidays coupled with the BOGO (buy one get one free) promotion at Verizon (s vz) accounted for the high sales numbers. My wife just got her own Curve, and she is very happy with the purchase as it is a very good smartphone. It is easy to see why RIM is selling so many Curves this season.

Sprint (s s) is now offering the YouMail visual voicemail service to BlackBerry owners for free thanks to the carrier’s change in conditional forwarding — there is no longer a charge for this service. YouMail works like visual voicemail on the iPhone:

You can scroll through incoming voicemail messages to see caller information including caller name, time of call, and length of message

Play voicemails by simply clicking on them

Share and forward voicemails as an email or post to a blog

Delete, archive or save voicemails, forever

You must download the YouMail app to your BlackBerry, which can be found in the App World.

How do four, five or even six vertical rows of icons grab you? You’ll need a sizable screen resolution if you plan to cram a half-dozen rows on your handset, but it can be done, courtesy of XDA developers. Pocketnow says this should work on WVGA devices as well as VGA units, but you’ll want to try different CAB files to see how many rows hits the sweet spot for you.

Now if we could just get a better way to organize all of those shortcuts, we’d be in business. I was a little disappointed to see “Move to top” as the only real option by default for natively customizing the icon order in Windows Mobile 6.5. But overlooking that little nit, WinMo is better than Android (s goog) in some ways, depending on who you ask, no?

If anyone is looking for an amazing mobile phone on the cheap. Wireless Wave is now selling the Palm Pre for only $49.95. That’s on a 3 year contract, even though it doesn’t say in the ad its on a 3 year contract. Bell is selling the same phone for $99.95. This is a great device with a few design flaws. The keyboard is a little to small, hard to hit the right letter if you have big thumbs. Also, the ridge at the end of the keypad is a little sharp (Palm’s addressed this on the newer phones). Some videos on Youtube show it cutting cheese. It’s a little over the top as I’ve seen the phone and it’s not that bad.

With WiFi, 3.0 Mega Pixel camera and the addition of a great Application store. The Palm’s WebOS is poised to take on any phone. It doesn’t have the 10,000 apps of the iPhone or the 1,000’s of apps and growing of Android. It will most likely have what you need.

This isn’t the newest of phones but I thought I’d better review it since they just slashed the price. Usually a price cut such as this indicates a new phone is coming and sure enough the Palm Pixi is just around the corner. I’ve never been a huge fan of the Palm devices but the new price point makes it much more attractive.

It’s difficult for me to imagine, but I’ve been using Skype for five years now. It’s a must-have tool for me and it became extremely valuable when it moved beyond simple voice calls and gained video capability. It’s about to get even better for many users thanks to fring. The latest version of fring for Symbian devices now integrates video calling over Skype using the integrated camera on your handset. Supported devices include the Nokia X6, N97 mini, N97, 5800, N95, N95 8G and N82 devices.

The folks at fring tell me that this is just the first round of supported devices and that many others will be added — even the iPhone (s appl). That one stumps me a bit due to the lack of a front-facing camera. On an iPhone, you’ll be able to see your caller just fine, but he or she will be looking away from you, if that makes any sense. I expect that it would really be a one-way video channel in that case.

Here’s a demo to give you an idea of what it looks like with two-way video.

LexisNexis has released its first iPhone App. It is called “Get Cases and Shepardize,’” and allows users to get cases from Lexis.com and Shepardize them to make sure what they have found is still good law.

Users must have a current account with Lexis.com and a valid password to use the application. The app itself is free at the iTunes App Store.

Will Westlaw be far behind?

Other iPhone apps that would be useful to law students:

BARBRI Mobile Bar Review – free

Barron’s Law Dictionary – $14.99

MBE timer – $19.99

Blacks Law Dictionary -$50

Hey, Apple: Why Not Trust Your Most Trustworthy iPhone Developers?

Apple has the opportunity to fast track submissions from its iPhone App store development partners.

Apple has the opportunity to fast track submissions from its iPhone App store development partners. Partners that follow best practices should be given the benefit of the doubt to accelerate the screening process.

Earlier today, my colleague Harry McCracken wrote about a BusinessWeek interview with Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice-president for worldwide product marketing concerning its App Store vetting process.

The gist of it is that Apple views itself as a retailer stocking its shelves with quality goods. It still needs to work on its vendor relations.

Schiller said that there are now over 100,000 applications in the App Store, and Apple is receiving over 10,000 submissions a week. Roughly 90% of the submissions that it rejects are simply buggy; the remaining 10% are “inappropriate” — containing malware, objectionable content, or are intended to help users break the law.

Apple believes that developers are happy about its “safety net,” and that may be true, but there have been very vocal exceptions. Facebook developer Joe Hewitt famously protested against the control Apple is exerting over its hardware, and argued that Apple is setting a “horrible precedent.”

However, the end result is that people trust the applications that they purchase in the App Store. That is an important part of the iPhone user experience. But Apple should give trusted developers more leeway — they make the App Store what it is. Apple needs their products.

I am reminded of the old Saturday Night Live sketch with Dan Aykroyd touting dangerous children’s toys such as “Johnny Switchblade,” “Bag O’ Glass,” and the “Chainsaw Bear.” It was hyperbole to the max. By Apple’s own omission, the vast majority (>90%) of developers are good partners that wouldn’t make disreputable apps, and they shouldn’t be treated as such.

My family owns a manufacturing business, and sells products that have International Organization for Standardization (ISO) approvals. ISO sets manufacturing standards, and audits the plants to guarantee that those standards are being met. Apple could do the same by outlining the best practices and tests that its developers should follow when they make software.

More transparency and partnership would go a long way. It is a huge disincentive to invest in the development of an app only to see it be rejected. Apple can be a better partner, and still protect the sanctity of its “shelves.”

Windows Mobile (s msft), iPhone (s aapl), Android (s goog), Symbian, BlackBerry (s rimm) and webOS (s palm) are all covered, so there’s something for everyone. I actually don’t backup my phones because all of my data is generally in the cloud and can be restored with an over-the-air sync. The only exception is the iTunes backup for my iPhone during the rare USB sync. Mail, documents, contacts, music, photos and just about everything else is on the web for me. Apps are the obvious exception to this rule, but my text message history is out there and searchable thanks to Google Voice. Although it generally doesn’t apply to my workstyle, the article ought to help the majority of smartphone users out there.

Got any other phone backup tips or services that should have made the cut?
