Well, I’m doing some web work for some forums over on http://blitz-animetech.com/index.php tonight. Basically I need to go in and setup spoiler tags and get the user-level colors to work. Easy work. Shouldn’t take too long. Not much has happened yet today, I’ll do another post tonight to keep you all updated.

Today we activated the new FORUM for AccurateShooter.com. The new Forum includes all the info from the original Forum, including photos and attachments. Our new FORUM uses a new dedicated server for faster page display and quicker searches. In addition, the new software provides many new (and often-requested) features, such as direct feedback for members who buy and sell via our classifieds.

Same Names and Same Passwords Will Work
If you were already a member of our Shooters’ Forum, you can log-in with the SAME User Name and SAME password as before. However, the first time you log in to the new Forum, you may have to enter name and password two times in a row. (The first input installs and encrypts your password; when you enter name + password a second time, the server “sees” the password and logs in your account).

The new forum replicates ALL the threads and posts from the existing forum, so the new FORUM will have all the information accumulated in the last five years. This includes tons of valuable load data and reloading information. You can also see thousands of images in our new FORUM. And we even retained all the private messages, so you won’t lose any info found there.

Some Attachment Issues Remain
In moving from the old server to the new FORUM server, we had to parse and move over 3500 attachments. This was a very difficult task and there are some technical issues that remain to be resolved. When you access your personal profile on the new FORUM, you may see a file that you attached to an old post. Don’t wory about that… we’re working on a fix. Likewise, some members may see an old attachment at the top of the FORUM front page, but we think we’ve got that resolved.

When creating a new thread (topic), or replying to a post, you can still attach a digital image stored on a third-party hosting site such as PhotoBucket.com or ImageCave.com. And, while our attachment system is up and running, we request that you do not use the attachment feature yet to attach new files. Please upload your photos to a 3rd party host instead… for a few more days. This way if we have to re-format the attachments, your file(s) won’t be lost.

The Outlook connector for Outlook 2007. I suppose they say “click OK.”?

Outlook 2007. This is a pretty dumb question. First of all, you see this screen when you want to configure and E-mail account, so “yes” we want to do this. Why is there the “no” option. On the bottom we have already a “cancel” button. They could show me directly the second window after you pressed “Next >”, because this window is pretty useless.

Well, many people out there find it hard and struggle to get their forums going. This leads to fustration and the closing of the forum, eventhough knowbody had even heard of it. Or.. very little. The aim is to stick at it. I know it gets you down, but you really do have to keep at it. People that create a forum sometimes expect it to get highly populated within the first couple of weeks to a month. This is not the case. Some popular forums take years to get the amount of views they have. Some warez forums for example. These are great forums mind you and get many users anyway, just for what they are. But they have to stick at it to get there 200,000 to 500,000 visitors a day. I mean i get an average of around 20-30 people on my blog. I still keep going, as one day my blog could get bigger and bigger, money could be made and so on.

So, you are here for a small trick? Well, if you are a webmaster, and are trying to get a forum going here it is.

You will need:

- Hosting, of course. Free or paid. Many people do tend to prefer paid though.
- A forum software. VBulletin, myBB, PHPBB, IPB, SMF etc etc and so forth. There are more!
- Once installed, turn off acitivation by email. You will see why later on.

Now to get started. In some forum softwares, you can just keep adding users thought the admin panel. If you have this choice. Add around 10 new users. Have each username with the same password. But keep the usernames no way in related to eachother. This then makes them look legit. Either get your friends to help you, or you do it yourself. This is time consuming i must say, but once your done and started getting menbers rolling in you wont be complaining. On the other hand, those who do not have the option to add users through the admin panel, you will have to do it manually by registering each user. (Now you see why i told you to turn off activation by email.).

Once you have done this, create a few new topics with that username. Change username, and do the same.
If you create around 4 threads per topic per username. Thats 4 x 10 in one topic. Which is 40. Then x that by however many topics you have. It is ideal to start with only a few topics at the beginning. Else you will be here all day. Create main topics such as. (If its a warez forum).

- Music
- Videos
- Ebooks

Now, you have used each username to post around 4 new threads in each topic. Like i said before, 40 in each. 4 topics. 40×4=160. Thats 160 posts all together so far. From those 10(fake) users.

Now you just need log in to a username, and comment on random ones. Don’t comment on a thread that was made by the same username of course. So if a topic was in appz, called mIRC cracked download by Jim. Go to one say, called, Milner and comment something simple, like Thankyou for this download. Been looking for it!
Do this once again with each 10 users (so make a conversation between those 10 fake users). This then makes the new comers, who then register think, wow this forum is popular (or active) and register. They then join in, tell their friends. More people also come from google etc.
If you get 5 new comers. They tell 5 of their friends each. Then you get 25 new comers. Those 25 people tell 5 friends each. Yeah.. you get the idea .

That is pretty much the basic way of (making) people think you forum is active. Making them want to join in.

Okay, one more simple say and them im out of here. My fingers ake .

This one is easier, say you have or are trying to make a programming forum. The best thing to do is offer new programs. A program that would normally cost. Or something. Say.. even something like a universal keygen for as many apps as you can do it for. Or maybe get an irc channel and start doing lectures. Ram pack your forums with brand new articles, source code etc and people will just not resist temptation to join and read more. Give them something to look forward too .

The past week hasn’t been the best- and that’s an understatement.  The pressure of wanting to finish our project near the end of the week was hard on me and the collegues in the Web Department, and the customer kept on making requests for changes on the go.  On top of that, I lost four hours because the idiots behind Small Machines Forums at some point decided it was a good idea to “point toward an absolute path” on a server in their configuration file.  While other technologies like Joomla, PHPBB, Drupal, Magento… you name it only need the relative path to the folder they’re installed in; or the URL path.

I didn’t only develop a strong dislike towards the SMF technology, I also developed two headaches.  One on “racket ball” day so I had to pass.  Leading to my mates being down to only 4 players.  And me feeling guilty and stressed about that afterwards.

I’d lie if I said that today was much better.  I got up, and spent nearly 3 hours on a 10-minute speech i’m holding on wednesday.  I’m not a “natural” so I need to work everything out in detail, to give the impression that I am not just reading everything from a paper.  Afterwards I went shopping, and for some reason that depressed me.  Don’t know why, there was no real reason as I found everything I needed.  I guess I just hate Autumn ?

After that, I spent some more time on that speak.  I finished it, though, and feel pretty good about it.  After that, it’s all a blur.  I should have written some reviews for my gaming blog, but couldn’t find the motivation.  Better luck next time, I guess.

Cu posturi stam prost deoarece tocmai ce am redechis comunitatea despre IT.

Nagios Core

First of all, the current version of Nagios Core (ie. 3.2.0) has to be fetched and unpacked. We’ll also need to apply a patch to fix the issues shown in the Icinga Installation Troubles post.

Dunno how Justin got nagios-plugins to compile with these flags; I suppose it’s because he used an older version of nagios-plugins. Anyway, he writes, that he HAD to use these flags, otherwise, make would error out on him in check_procs. For me, it’s the opposite – don’t use --with-ps-XYZ flags, and it compiles fine. Use those --with-ps-XYZ flags, and make fails.

Start

Nagios

Now, after having installed BOTH Nagios Core and Nagios Plugins, it should be possible to start application/nagios:

Main fault: “Stopping because process dumped core.“. Interestingly, when trying to start nagios manually (by running /opt/local/nagios-3.2.0/etc/init.d/nagios start), Nagios starts up just fine – please also see the blogpost Core Dumps when run in SMF, fine otherwise‽.

Haven’t found a reason for the core dump (and also have NOT found the core core dump file itself by running find / -type f -name core, for that matter…). Because of that, switching to the OpenCSW Nagios “Core” and Nagios Plugins packages.

I discovered, that my self compiled version of Nagios 3.2.0 core dumps, when I run it using the Solaris SMF facility. But when I run it manually, everything’s fine. Strange…

After VERY shortly “trying out” Icinga, I changed by mind, and decided to go the more stable road and installed Nagios. As there’s only an “ancient” version of 3.0.6 available at OpenCSW in their “Current Tree” at the time of this writing, I went ahead and downloaded the now up-to-date version 3.2.0 from Nagios and installed it. This also involved installing libjpeg, libpng, FreeType and finally gd.

Nagios suffers from the same compilation troubles, that Icinga has. And thus they are solved in exactly the same way But how to compile Nagios shouldn’t beis not the topic of this post. The topic is, that Nagios core dumps, when I have Solaris 10 start it using the SMF thingie. What very much confuses me, is that it works just fine, when I run it manually, even after having set the environment exactly the same way it is set, when SMF has control. Strange!

To be able to use SMF to control the “application/nagios” service, a manifest XML file needs to exist. And also a method file (“init script”) has to be there. The method file I use, is based on the original Nagios supplied one with some minor tweaks. If you checkout those files, you’ll see that this is pretty darn basic stuff.

Well, why is it so, that the nagios binary core dumps, when I run it under SMF control and behaves just fine, when I run it manually?

Eis que nesse momento de profundo tédio e sonolência que venho expôr minha teoria do SMF, ou Síndrome do mais Fudido. Peço que perdooem o linguajar, pois não há palavra que melhor descreva esta síndrome e acredito que se os leitores não concordarem ao menos vão entendê-la.

Minha teoria é baseada em observações de amigos, familiares, conhecidos e desconhecidos. Fragmentos de conversas e desabafos.

A SMF consiste impreterivelmente de uma péssima mania, que acredito esteja arraigada um pouco à cultura brasileira (ou não), de competir para ver que está mais ferrado na vida. Os sujeitos com esta síndrome possuem compulsão por argumentar e defender que sua vida é pior que a do outro  e nem por isso eles está deprimido ou abatido por isso. Às vezes o indivíduo até admite sua trsiteza e depressão. Em ambos os casos dão a entender que a vida do outro é de certo modo invejável.

Exemplificando:

Aconteceu algo ruim. Pode ser muito ruim ou pouco ruim não importa. Você está triste, abatido com isso e decide desabar com alguém. Esse alguém por acaso tem SMF. Você começa a falar dos seus problemas e a pessoa lhe interrompe diz que já passou por algo pior ou semelhante. Conta-lhe o caso. Você ouve. Depois retoma o seu desabafo, continua sua tragédia pessoal que novamente é interrompida para ser comparada à  outra tragédia semelhante (pelo menos assim o julga o SMF) e em escala desproporcionalmente maior. Assim a conversa flui… ou não.

Em resumo você se sente ainda mais frustrado, pois além de não ter aliviado o peso dos seus próprios problemas, vocês ainda se sente o pior dos seres por encarar tais problemas com tanta dificuldade. Afinal sempre há alguém pior.

Outro exemplo é quando você pede que o Alguém com SMF para fazer algo e este sempre encontra empecilhos, que foram colocados lá pela vida e o destino e não pela própria pessoa. A conversa seguiria assim:

- Sr. Alguém? Poderia entregar estas pastas no prédio da Adminitração?

- Xii, não posso meu carro está no conserto.

- Sem problemas, acredito que pedindo a nota fiscal a empresa paga um táxi para o senhor.

- Ah mas eu não sou assim que nem você amigo do chefe.

- Ora, não é nenhum favor da empresa ou do chefe. Você continuará de serviço ao entregar estas pastas.

- Pois é, vou fazer e nem vou receber por isso… Ultimamente tenho chegado um pouco tarde em casa, estudar e trabalhar não e fácil. Além da Esposa sentir falta, passo pouco tempo com ela…            vou chamar o táxi.

E nosso amigo acabou de ser fisgado na conversa do SMF. O SMF geralmente é mais pobre, mais ocupado, mais injustiçado, mais fu… E por isso mesmo aconselho a todos que estiverem lendo, por favor, ao perseber alguém com SMF, não precisa fugir apenas não se recrimine porque a pessoa tem mais dificuldades que você. Deixe que essa pessoa ostente seu título de Mais Ferrado do Mundo de peito aberto, enquanto os outros seres humanos lidam com seus problemas cada um a sua maneira. Sem competir quem tem mais dificuldades ou que já passou por coisa pior.

E se você form uma pessoa com SMF, espero que tenha se identificado e passe a ser uma pessoa mais legal, divertida e menos sem noção. Pois cada é um é um e nossos dramas pessoais não são melhores ou piores do que os outros. È só a forma de encará-los, o contexto que define o nosso estado de epírito para enfrenté-los.

Sinceramente e pessoalmente, acho uma tremenda bobagem a ostentação do Mais Fudido.

Nota aleatórias: não é nada particular, só estava refletindo como não gosto quando alguém começa a dizer que a vida dela é uma porcaria e que o seu problema é nada. Ahco que quando estamos com o problema ele é bem menor do que pensamos, mas é bem maior do que os outros pensam que é. Estou com sono, mas eu realmente gosto dessa teoria. Por isso postei.

Obs²: Sim, eu sei que existem problemas bem maiores no mundo do que no particular. Mas creio que o sofrimento de alguém pode vir de algo realmente simples até coisas realmente sérias. E pode afetar as pessoas na mesma intensidade. Os níveis aqui só são dividos em urgência nas questões de necessidade e sobrevivênvia em modos dignos.

The more I use OpenSolaris, the more I experience mixed feelings whether I like it or not.

Stuff I like: ZFS, root pool mirroring, live upgrades/booting environments, DTrace, NFS, CIFS, extended POSIX compliance, good documentation and VirtualBox (it suffers from some occasional hangs and performance issues but I expect them to be fixed – they were fixed).
Stuff I didn’t try yet, but I hope I will like: zones, SMF, xen.
Stuff I don’t like: hype, elitism/irony, denial and rationalisation, “blame the user and/or hardware” attitude, overly complexity/convolution of the system (they will call it sophistication), too verbose documentation, dispersion of the project, pretence of openness.

But, honestly, don’t trust me neither on the positive nor the negative comments. Just go ahead, try it and make up your own mind.

Projelerden biri için iki adet Solaris 10 (u7) sunucu üzerine medya ile birlikte gelen Apache’nin kurulması gerekiyordu. Kurduk Ama daha sonra yazılımcılar en az V2 ile çalışmak istediklerini belirtip V1.3′ten vazgeçtiler.

Herhangi bir yazılımcının istek ve karar değişiklikleri asla bitmeyeceği için bir süre sonra bunu da yeterli görmeyip V2.2 ile çalışmak istediklerini belirttiler.

Solaris medyası ile V2 geldiği için V2.2.12′ yi ancak www.sunfreeware.com’dan bulabildim.

Apache’nin bu sürümü beraberinde bir çok ek paketin de yüklenmesini istiyor. Özellikle prod sunucularına GCC kurmak istemeyenler için libgcc.3-4-6 tavsiye edilmiş.

Kurulumlar tamamlandığında elimizde çalışır halde Apache v2 sunucuları vardı ve yazılımcıların tüm isteklerini karşılıyordu ama bu sefer de yönetim sorunları ortaya çıktı.

Yüklemede kullandığım stream data package anladığım kadarıyla Apache için SMF servisi oluşturmamıştı. Bu durumda ancak ilgili klasörün içinden apachectl’yi elle çalıştırarak hizmeti başlatabiliyorduk.

Aslında bu durum işime de gelmedi değil. Ne kadar zamandır SMF hakkında pratik yapmayı planlıyordum ve bu sayede el alışkanlığımı da geliştirmiş oldum.

Apache V2 için SMF servisi oluşturmanın yolu çok basit.

Este post faz parte de uma série de 3, dedicado a explicar como os sistemas operacionais mais utilizados no mercado iniciam serviços automaticamente. Vou explicar como sempre foi, e como está atualmente.

Serviços são programas que são iniciados e rodam no sistema operacional, dividindo o tempo do processador com outras tarefas. Estes geralmente são iniciados em tempo de boot, e podem assumir diversos papéis, como um proxy de internet, um servidor de aplicações, ou um serviço de login remoto, como o ssh.

O Solaris, a partir da sua versão 10, vem equipado com um framework de serviços chamado de Solaris Service Management Facilities (SMF). Antes dessa versão, a manutenção de serviços era feita pelo modelo Unix BSD, discutido no post anterior. Com o SMF, tudo ficou mais simples, elegante, funcional, e escalável.

Eu, particularmente, achei a solução da Sun a mais interessante, dentre as outras discutidas anteriormente. Acredito na potencialidade desse framework, e me serviu da maneira que eu esperava, quando precisei iniciar serviços automaticamente no Solaris. Vale lembrar que a versão gratuíta, open-source, e mantida pela comunidade, OpenSolaris, também vem equipada com esse recurso, e vale a pena experimentar.

O SMF funciona basicamente como um repositório de XMLs, e fornece alguns executáveis como middleware para manutenção desse banco de dados de serviços. Cada XML é um descritor de um serviço, e o controle de execução e configurações do serviço, é totalmente feito pelos aplicativos que o Solaris fornece para tal (svcadm, svcs, svccfg).

Vistos os posts acima, basicamente o funcionamento é o seguinte.

Define-se um arquivo XML, onde se determina um nome para o serviço, se ele é instância única ou não, e em seguida, define-se propriedades do serviço, bem como as dependências que esse serviço pode ter.

Com essas informações, define-se então, as instâncias, e as propriedades de cada instância, e finalmente define-se o que acontecerá com o serviço, em caso de inicio, pausa, parada, ou recuperação. Cada ação  desempenha uma linha de comando, com a ação e propriedades definidas no XML passada por argumento e variáveis de ambiente, permitindo uma total flexibilidade da aplicação e da construção do serviço.
