The Arbroath Smokie originally came from the small fishing village of Auchmithie, 3 miles North-East of Arbroath. Local legend has it that a store caught fire one night, destroying barrels of haddock preserved in salt. The following morning, the people of Auchmithie came to clean up the ruin and found some of the barrels had caught fire, cooking the haddock inside. Further inspections revealed the haddock was edible and quite tasty.

In reality, it’s much more likely that the villagers at Auchmithie are of Scandinavian descent as the ‘Smokie making’ process is similar to methods of smoking which are still carried out today in areas of Scandinavia.

Towards the end of the 19th century, the fishing industry in Arbroath was in terminal decline, this prompted Arbroath Town Council to offer the fisherfolk from Auchmithie land in an area of the town known as the fit o’ the toon, they also offered the fisherfolk use of the modern harbour, this together with the better prospects on offer in Arbroath saw much of the Auchmithie population relocate to Arbroath, bringing the recipe for the Arbroath Smokie with them. Today, there are around 15 businesses producing Arbroath Smokies in the town, making them widely available through major supermarkets in the UK, and worldwide via the internet.

In 2004 the European Commission registered the designation “Arbroath Smokies” as a Protected Geographical Indication under the EU’s Protected Food Name Scheme, acknowledging its unique status.

Looking forward to seeing who actually wins! Maybe the industry can take notes from the AMAs by giving awards based on sales and not politics since sales mean PEOPLE chose the winners! *Pardon me Grammys* but the voters are not necessarily in tune with the music…I’ll get on their case in another blog coming soon!

Originally called The Yen, then The Sphynx and later Essence, the band was formed in 1965 at St. Bede’s Grammar School in Heaton, Bradford. It was composed of Chris Norman, Terry Uttley, Alan Silson and Ron Kelly. As Essence, they toured small clubs in Bradford and the surrounding communities. The band became The Black Cats in 1966 and in Nov 1967 the band changed their name to The Four Corners.

We never seem to learn from our mistakes….

The modern world doesn’t seem to like the concept of sin, but it doesn’t seem to mind so much the concept of forgiveness. If we had to carry with us all our sins and failures, we would never make any progress at all. We would be like a car stuck in mud or sand: engine revving, wheels spinning, getting deeper, going nowhere. So we need someone to tow us out.

The main, sole, purpose of Jesus’s incarnation was just that: forgiveness of our sins and our redemption. Only when we are released from the bondage of sin, can we be in the correct relationship with God our Father. Many people see repentance as a huge burden imposed by a judging God; but the purpose of repentance is forgiveness, a benefit of God’s mercy. One repents and says “sorry” to one’s wife because one acknowledges that the relationship is precious. Jesus’s death by crucifixion is the means of our forgiveness and restoration. We are unable to save ourselves.

The next time we see a car stuck in mud or sand, trying to “redeem” itself, let’s remind ourselves that God did something to get us out: Jesus.

I decided it was time to bring the Kat Tails saga back to the new Tinkerbell’s Momma Kat. Several of my readers told me they really enjoyed these stories before. Hope everyone can get the picture of this saga and laugh. I sure wish I would have had a video camera to record this saga.

Last night Smokie, the feral kitty, smelled the wonderful chicken Phillip had brought me for dinner. As Phillip entered the house, in runs Smokie to boot.

Try as hard as he might, Phillip just could not get Smokie to run to the backdoor and go outside again. Next thing I knew, there was Phillip with the fly swatter chasing Smokie around from room to room. I stopped eating and moved into the family room with my wheelchair to try and help, but all was in vain.

Then Smokie made the ultimate mistake. She decided to go into Momma Kat’s bedroom. It did not take but a few seconds for Tinkerbell to realize this, and next thing you know here comes Smokie flying to the backdoor after Tinkerbell chased her out of our turf. You never saw those pussy boots run so fast! Smokie could hardly wait for Phillip to open the backdoor for her.

Was Smokie hurt? Absolutely not. Tinkerbell is not vicious — just persistant. But Tinkerbell got her point across and Smokie has not been running into the house today. That’s my Tinkerbell. Should I have had any doubt she could take care of Miss Pussy Boots for us? Absolutely not, that was the Jack Russell in her. Watch this video and you can see them in real action.

Oh, and yes Jack Russells do get close to the ground with their two front paws while the two back paws and their little target butts stay up in the air. This happens to be the reason Tinkerbell the Stinkerbell is also called “target butt” by her Mommy. She even stretches like this with her tail straight up in the air. No modesty unlike little lady Sophie Rose. What a gal!

Wow, I almost lost my McDonald’s Quarter Pounder hamburger yesterday. Phillip was sweet enough to bring me a Quarter Pounder hamburger from McDonald’s. He comes by around 11:00 am and 8:00 pm each day to check on me while I am recuperating, and helps me with things such as feeding my animals and the feral kitties as well.

As Phillip opened the door of his truck to get the McDonald’s bag out, Smokie the feral cat immediately jumped into the truck after it. Thank goodness Phillip was quick on the draw and beat her to it.

I guess Smokie really likes McDonald’s hamburgers too. Maybe Phillip will buy her one next time. We will see.

A baby brother for my DSLR. Also known as the Canon SD960. Or one sexy little point in shoot

It’s true – I bought myself a birthday present a wee bit early. What can I say, they dropped the price on the camera by $50, so how could I not? Not only did I get the camera, but it came with one of those wicked flexible tripods – you can latch those onto anything!

I also picked up a camera case, 8GB memory card, and spare battery to totally trick out my new camera. We won’t talk about how much damage it did to the Visa though. I already know it’s totally worth it.

But can we talk a minute about how ridiculous the packaging for digital cameras is? Seriously – check out the size of the camera vs the size of the box it comes in.

Excessive, no? I realize they want to protect it from damage while shipping, but come on. It seems a bit like overkill. I will give them props for not using any Styrofoam in their packaging though. Oh well, at least I have another box I can pack things in to move.

Let’s back track though. Before my trip down to see Dave, my sales guy, at Future Shop, I made a quick dinner. One that involved heat via the stove. Drop the temperature a few degrees, and this girl can’t help but heat the place up again by using the damn stove.

I really wanted garlic roasted potatoes – no substitute would do.

I grilled up a Mclean Organic Foods “Cheeza” Smokie, served up with mustard.

Ya know, there is no good way to photograph a whole sausage without it looking phallic. I’m just saying.

I also steamed some broccoli & cauliflower, and topped it with some sharp white cheddar. I may love cheese.

I think those were some of the best roasted potatoes I’ve made. Perfectly crispy on the outside, while the inside was almost melt in your mouth good. Mmmm.

As much as I would have loved to play with my new camera all evening, I had to do some cleaning, as my sister is coming to visit for the weekend. I vacuumed and cleaned the bathroom, as well as got some laundry done. Then it was snack time.

Looks like chocolate ice cream, no? I guess it sort of is. I kicked up the blog famous banana soft serve with some cocoa powder, and a swirl of peanut butter. I highly recommend trying this combination – chocolate, peanut butter, banana. Perfection. I only wish I’d made a big batch!

I did manage a few photos with the new toy, just for fun. In fact, the above photo was taken with it I also tested it out on my favourite subject – Sienna.

Dinner tonight was a wonderful plate full of tastes and colours. It all started with this package:

When I was at the store last weekend, I saw that these smokies from McLean Organic Foods were reduced to clear because the expiry date was the day I bought them. I threw them in the freezer when I got home, so I can use them as desired. I had seen the McLean Organic products in the store for a little while now, but had never gotten around to trying any of them. I’ll be honest – the “Cheeza Smokie” probably wouldn’t have been by first choice, but for $3 off, it made the decision easy.

McLean Organic Foods are a Canadian company, offering a line of premium fresh & cooked deli meats, all made without chemical food additives. Their products are also gluten, dairy, and soy free – great for those with allergies. This particular product is made with 100% organic pork, and 98% organic ingredients.

I defrosted and grilled up one of the smokies on the Foreman, and served it with a little mustard for dipping.

Can you see that “cheeze” hiding there under the skin? Mmmm, cheeze.

And check that out – no filler, not big fatty pieces. My kind of sausage.

To go along with my smokie, I roasted up some sweet potato chips.

And since I had the oven going, I figured I’d roast my broccoli instead of the usual steaming.

Playing with your food is fun.

I was a big fan of these smokies. They are very lean (3g fat per smokie), and I didn’t think they were as salty as many of the sausages you’ll find. The flavour was very clean tasting, and the “cheeze” tasted as good as a regular cheese filled sausage. I’d definitely buy them again. I want to try out some of their turkey products as well.

So even though my hamstrings, hips, and glutes were still sore from all the work we did last night at boot camp, I had to hit up the gym. I find exercise to be a great reliever of…other crampy pain, if you know what I’m saying. I stuck to the elliptical and upper body strength work, so as not to be too mean to my body.

And, per usual, I came home and made my snack/dessert. I’m never sure what to call it – sometimes it’s seems like dessert, sometimes it’s more of a snack. I guess it doesn’t really matter.

Tonight’s snack was inspired by Lori at Fake Food Free and her Banana & Avocado Vitamin.

I knew I had all the ingredients on hand, and threw the banana in the freezer last night just so I could try this out today. My mix included:

• 1 small banana, frozen
• 1/2 small avocado
• ~1/2 cup skim milk
• squirt of agave (my banana wasn’t super ripe)

Whiz it all up with your choice of whizzer (I used the immersion blender), and you get this light, creamy, delicious creation.

This is a definite keeper. You could taste the avocado ever so slightly, in a good way. I just love the texture the whole thing took on. I may need to stock up on bananas and avocados.

I also grabbed one of those addictive “Nicer” Krispy Squares, because well, they are that good.

So, I’m sure you are all wondering what the title of this post is referring to, seeing as nothing I ate was really that salty. Well, there was a piece on the news about the salt content in various foods in Canada. A British group did a study looking at the salt content in popular foods/brands, like Subway, McDonalds, Kellogg, etc across different countries, and it turns out that those products sold in Canada have some of the highest salt contents of all the countries & foods looked at. I must say, I was a little shocked by this. I appreciate that you would alter your formula to suite the palates of the customers in various countries, but I didn’t realize that us Canucks like our foods extra salty. I’m really surprised, and not impressed, with both the food companies in question, or our government for not acting on this health issue. I would have thought that the salt content in foods would be equivalent between Canada and the US, but that’s not even the case. You can read more on the study here: Saltier Foods Sold In Canada.

Si pe acelea a fost destul de greu sa le ordonez, dar m-am concentrat mai mult pe primele 60 si 30, in mod special. Toate merita ascultate.
