Η πρώτη δουλειά του Smoove κυκλοφόρησε το 2005, με τίτλο “Dead Men’s Shirts”. Εξαιρετικό ντεμπούτο, με τα funky breaks να φτύνουν φωτιές και να καθιστούν τον Smoove σαν έναν από τους κορυφαίους του είδους. Tracks όπως τα “As If”, “Brownest Eyes” και “Coming Back” σε στέλνουν στο υπερπέραν και σε κάνουν να φαντάζεσαι πως θα ακουγόταν η Ella Fitzgerald αν ντοπαριζόταν… 4/5!

It’s been a while since the last Under The Radar post. The reason is not lack of music, but rather lack of time to get the posts written …. here goes.

Dojo Cuts – Dojo Cuts feat. Roxie Ray (2009)

Dojo Cuts are the latest in a growing line-up of Australian soul/funk groups to combine crisp, tight, funky instrumentals with some killer vocals thrown in for good measure. Similar to existing bands, such as Cookin’ On 3 Burners and The Bamboos, Dojo Cuts take their inspiration from classic 60s/70s funk and combine it with modern funk elements to create timeless, classic, feel-good music.

Unlike the other groups I mentioned, Dojo Cuts have a full-time vocalist on board in the shape of Roxie Ray. Roxie posesses a ‘classic’ soulful voice, equal parts power and grit, that perfectly complements each of the 9 cuts on the album, especially their cover of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Uptight’.

So do Dojo Cuts have anything to offer that we havn’t already heard from aforementioned artists? Well, no. However what does make them stand apart in an ever-growing soul/funk scene is they do what they do extremely well!

Smoove & Turrell – Antique Soul (2009)

This album was recommended to me my fellow soul/funk afficionado Keyknow from Sounds Of Soul Radio. I had never before heard of the UK duo but as soon as I pressed play on lead single ‘I Can’t Give You Up’ I knew I had found a contender for my best of ‘09 list.

Smoove is an established producer/beat-maker and already has an album under his belt, however it wasn’t until he combined his talents with those of vocalist John Turrell that everything really came together. The duo combine elements of northern soul, funk and even a little hip-hop to create a 13 track album that truly does grab you from start to finish.

Highlights include the ‘I Can’t Give You Up’, ‘Difference’ and the perfect party soundtrack for these hard economic times, ‘Beggarman’.

Flevans – 27 Devils (2009)

Flevans is the latest in a long line of artists I have discovered via the Tru-Thoughts label. The multi-instrumentalist has a number of single/EP releases under his belt and an LP entitled Make New Friends, however it was his lates work, 27 Devils, that caught my attention.

Instrumental tracks usually fail to hold my interest for long, and 9 times out of 10 it is the vocal that initially attracts me to any given song, however after hearing the great ‘27 Devils’ I decided to give the album a go. I’m very pleased I did, not only because all the instrumental tracks are fantastic, but also because there are 5 tracks on the album which include 2 very talented young ladies, Sarah Scott and Shona Foster.

After hearin 27 Devils in it’s entirity I decided to track down the rest of his work and I can honestly say I was not disappointed. Now i’m looking forward to the release of 28 Devils (27 Devils remixes) at the end of this year.

I don’t have many words to express how real this young “brotha” is….6′9, athletic and if he wants he will dunk on you. Ira Spencer is the real deal. He comes from San Diego, CA with a mentality that has never been heard of. He is on a mission to take his game to another level. Catch him with an “8″ on his back coming through the lane in Europe. Piesa a fost trasa in calitate de experiment personal, la URBANTAPE RECords ft. INFLAMABIL Records si masterizata de Inestetic Production, Romania.
Lansarea in premiera a acestei piese a fost pe data de 22.05.2009 la concertul cu dubla lansare: Latinii si NotaBene in club-ul Equator din Chisinau, unde publicul a primit-o cu bratele deschise!

Prima piesa, PROMO, de pe album cu aceeasi denumire – “Inspiratii”, in colaborare cu Smoova, a fost deja data la “share” pe internet (download).

Όταν μιλάμε για funky breaks αναφερόμαστε μάλλον σε κάτι τέτοιο. Ο κύριος Smoove, αναγνωρισμένος πλέον DJ και παραγωγός, με την καινούρια του δουλειά που ονομάζεται Gravy, μας παραθέτει μια σειρά από ακυκλοφόρητα τραγούδια αλλά και remixes σε άλλους καλλιτέχνες και μας μυεί λίγο περισσότερο στον θαυμαστό κόσμο του revival funk. Ότι πρέπει για μια πρώτη επαφή με το συγκεκριμένο είδος μουσικής. Του βάζω 3,5/5.

sons of tito jackson who are probably around 30 now. apparently in 1996 their record sales in the UK were second only to the spice girls. who knew? tried to make a comeback but in boyband terms are a bit long in the tooth now although that hasn’t stopped take that…

911 – in a magazine

no not the geordie shortarses who had a way with the ladies. this was a teddy riley project fronted by basic black singer dezo adams. folded with their label after releasing this and ‘cutie’.

az yet – last night

az yet are still going, in two incarnations. disuptes over who owned the name led to two simultaneous groups and to be honest…i’m not going to unravel it all cos all you really need to know is that they had this hit and did a couple of chicago covers. sorted.

basic black – special kind of fool

the precursor to the above mentioned 911, with more of a new jack swing flavour. had a big hit with ’she’s mine’.

f.s effect – i wanna be your lover

could win the coveted crap 90s album title award for ’so deep it’s bottomless’. no other info.

kreuz – do you right

uk group who actually got signed to motown but something went wrong. not sure what exactly but, it did all sound a bit too good to be true didn’t it?

h-town – part time lover

better known for their collaboration with jodeci on ‘knockin’ the boots’, which must have made for a confusing recording session as to my mind, they are exactly the same group.

men of vizion – do thangz

had two hits that i can remember, this and ‘break me off’. little bit cheesy in a montell jordan kind of way.

motif and positive k – you told me

positive k at least, had that crazy video ‘i got a man’ that was always on the box music channel back in the day. this lot fell under the radar, big time.

p.o.v – anutha luv

probably best known for their collaboration with girl group jade ‘ all thru the nite’. wore dkny baseball shirts and bounced up and down a lot.

portrait – honey dip

perhaps the only group on this list to release three consecutive 90s albums. you could call them a poor man’s hi-five but that would be cruel…

another comedy 90s album title ’smoove with a ruffness’ which perhaps is directly attributable to its lack of sales as in those pre-amazon days the man at the record counter would look at what you were buying and smirk..
