Unfortunately I have already forgotten what categories I set aside for myself to review games by ear

Unfortunately I have already forgotten what categories I set aside for myself to review games by earlier in this blog. So I’m just going to tell you what I think and really, I just made up those categories to bash on FF12.

Shin Megami Tensei if you don’t know is a basically a franchise that is equivalent to demonic god killing pokemon. Typical aspects of the series is collecting/turning into demons (demons that can be anything from Beelzebub to Odin to Vishnu to Metatron), reshaping the world per your character’s choices, and beating up God and/or Lucifer. The series was pretty much born on the controversial side of life and typically has fantastic, thoroughly thought out writing. That said, not all the entries are particularly good.

Devil Survivor I love. Its not for everyone but it is a fantastic game. I have NEVER been this addicted to a handheld game. Oh sure I own plenty of them but most have weak stories with overly simple game mechanics.

The story for Devil Survivor is great, primarily because of all the well done characterization. The story, however, doesn’t really take off until the third day. The first 3 days are all setup and an introduction to an SMT universe. I’m also pretty the brainstorming for this project went something like, “I just saw Battle Royale, lets do that in an SMT universe!” The game is filled with a number of characters, most of whom you can have in your party. The trick is they all have different philosophies on how to solve the game’s crisis and will only help you so much as to attain their goals.

A quick summary of the game’s plot: The government in an attempt to trap a religious sect that summons demons known as the Shomonkai, places a quarantine over a section of Tokyo. The main character and his friends get caught up in the mess by finding demon summoning “COMPs” (which look suspiciously like Nintendo DS’s). Its up to you whether to stay or run.

Gameplay wise this is probably the easiest SMT game I’ve ever played. You fuse demons or buy them at a demon auction. You can only fuse demons up to whatever your main character’s level is. Skills/Magic can be learned by “Skill Cracking”, which translates to: this demon has the skill you want this character to have, so have that character kill it.

The fighting takes place only on a tactics RPG style field of squares. There are a variety of movement skills which make this aspect pretty interesting. Whenever you attack an enemy the fight transitions to a traditional style turn based RPG forum, with your character and their two demons versus three enemies. Getting criticals or hitting the enemies weakness earn characters an extra attack while missing or hitting an enemy with an element it is immune to can lose your character their extra attack. Four characters with their demons can be on the field at once.

The graphics is really where this game gets its bad marks. While all the images are stylized like in the Persona series, there are little to no animations. It was really quite a baffling thing when I realized this a week or two ago. But at the same time, it is a Nintendo DS game. And Nintendo hasn’t been known for their wonderful graphics since the Gamecube (the Gamecube being the technical best designed last gen system).

The music for the game is surprisingly enjoyable. I typically keep the volume knob down on my DS but on this game I find myself turning it up on occasion.

Overall, if you like turn based RPG’s, heavy philosophy and characterization, and own a DS, then go buy this game. If you don’t own a DS…. well there really aren’t that many great games for the DS this one just might make it worth owning one.

Microsoft’s statistical machine-translation technology designed for integration into third-party web

Microsoft’s statistical machine-translation technology designed for integration into third-party web properties has now reached its Beta stage. The latest development, announced at TechEd Europe is also synonymous with the Redmond company opening up access to the Microsoft Translator Widget and the Microsoft Translator AJAX API. Prior to TechEd Europe, both the Translator widget and the application programming interface were only available on an invitation-only basis.

This move follows the current push to offer more and more machine-translation integration, a trend followed by several language companies, like Pangeanic. Language Service Providers have been feeling the pressure on technology innovation for some time now. Sharing initiatives like TAUS‘ TDA have paved the way for an increase in the availability of data which in turn has accelerated several developments. In other occasions, TDA initiative has made possible the birth of new revenue streams for LSP’s.

With this new Beta, website owners who want to make use of Microsoft Translator technology into their online content can do so with no limitations as the Beta program is public. In a nutshell, the company is enabling all customers to generate either a snippet or application based on its own MT technology. Website owners only need to visit the widget and AJAX API adoption portals, and get the generated code from there.

Vikram Dendi, from the Microsoft Translator team, highlighted a few points of interest from TechEd Europe: “Microsoft Translator APIs and the webpage widget are now in beta. Generate a translator widget for your webpage here, or use the AJAX API to further customize the translation experience.”

The Saudi Arabian National Research and Development Organization announced yesterday a multi-year ag

The Saudi Arabian National Research and Development Organization announced yesterday a multi-year agreement to collaborate on, amongst other areas, the advancement of Machine-Translation technologies.

Under terms of the agreement, King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) will purchase an IBM Blue Gene supercomputer that will enable its researchers to perform complex simulations and computational modelling.

The software giant will provide training services to KACST researchers on the functionality and features of Statistical Machine Translation technology. IBM’s Research and Development team will be in charge of building the machine translation system with the initial basic system capabilities, which will be trained with several million words of data – the basis of the translation training process.

IBM will commit researchers, and business consultants and KACST scientists will work together to further enhance the IBM Machine Translation Engine into a powerful translation engine to translate Arabic to other languages. This project deals with natural language analysis and computational methods for language translation. Technologies used for machine translation, such as syntactic parsing and word sense disambiguation, are commonly used in other applications of natural language processing.

The agreement is one of several joint research projects undertaken between both organizations.

Help will also be provided on Intellectual Property Development management so that IBM’s expertise is used to help KACST tools and processes that turn its inventions into patents.

The agreement also includes collaboration to create the National Center for Women Engineers.

Full story has been reported in several sites: zawya.com, ameinfo.com, and the US-Saudia Arabian Business Council.

by Stephanie Meyer, KF9, Sierra Leone I eat at Kumba’s at least three times a week. I’ve always been

by Stephanie Meyer, KF9, Sierra Leone

I eat at Kumba’s at least three times a week. I’ve always been the type that likes to have my “regular spots” – my coffee shop, my bar, my newsstand. I like to think of Kumba’s as my lunch spot. It doesn’t hurt that everything is so homey. There are only three tables, so people tend to share and chat. By the time I had made three visits, I was granted to privilege of walking through the door to “Eh! Step-nie!” followed by enquiries after the folks I usually eat with and their whereabouts. The food is tasty and it’s fast, and on very rare occasions when she knows I’m coming, there’s onion stew (my favorite so far). About a week ago, I popped my head into my Kiva Coordinator’s office to let him know I was off for “apotho lunch” (me and my weak American stomach eat lunch about an hour before everyone else in the office). He asked where I was going, and I told him Kumba’s for Cassava Leaf. “Kumba?” he asked, “You know, she is a client”. (check out her current profile here)

I did NOT know that, and it excited me a great deal. I’ve been fortunate in my ability to have meetings with a large number of clients since my arrival in Makeni, but I often feel a bit rushed and impersonal. The need to communicate through a translator, though essential for my Krio- and Temne- speaking clients, can seem like a wall. Sometimes I suspect I’m getting the lip service answers of “to invest in my business” or “yes, microfinance has been wonderful for me” to my questions, because borrowers can be so startled and awed by my unannounced appearance in their place of business, snapping my camera and spouting my questionable Krio. I like to think, however, that Kumba and I have become pals in my time here. I look forward to seeing her in the afternoons. When I ask her “Eh ma, ow de day?” I’m really curious about how her day has been so far, and what she’s been up to. She seems to feel the same way. I mentioned to my coordinator that I would love to interview Kumba for a blog.

At the beginning, he was clearly a bit skeptical. Turns out Kumba has been interviewed before. Some while back (it can be very difficult to pin down exact dates and times here…) a reporter from Scotland visited Makeni to research a human-interest piece on microfinance, and he chose to focus on Kumba. From the sounds of things, she was promised everything but the kitchen sink: donor money would flow in, her restaurant would become famous, etc. etc. (bear in mind I get all this third-hand, but tsk tsk, reporter man). As is often the case in such scenarios, the man returned home, probably wrote a beautiful and moving story about a woman’s struggle against the odds, and Kumba never heard a word again. One can understand why she would be a bit reluctant to sign up for round two.

Determined to at least try, I stopped by the restaurant for lunch yesterday, and started talking to her about SMT and my work at Kiva. I mentioned that I would love to write a story about her for lenders to read. Her smile didn’t waver, so I pushed forward. Not wanting to repeat the mistakes of my predecessor, I tried almost too hard to be honest with Kumba: this will not mean any extra money for you or any extra funding. Most of the people who read this will probably never visit Sierra Leone, so there will not be any additional business. It won’t affect your ability to get new SMT or Kiva loans in the future positively or negatively. After I painted this rosy picture of my post, Kumba waited for a moment, then just grinned, nodded and said “s’okay. Now?”. I felt a little flutter knowing that, even though it meant nothing for her personally, Kumba would still do me this favor. We ARE friends!

Turns out Kumba has taken out three loans through SMT so far (she is currently paying back her third). Before opening the restaurant, she worked at two different hotel/restaurants in town, but was unhappy in her inability to manage her own work and hours, and a bit disappointed in her, ahem, erratic paycheck schedule. She opened the restaurant 1 year and 8 months ago (the exact date and the quickness with which she was able to give it to me are testaments to how much this date meant to her). With her first loan, she purchased general supplies: food, drinks, cooking gear. The second went to upgrading her kitchen and getting more pots, pans, and utensils, in order to service new customers. It is the most recent loan, however, about which Kumba seems most proud. In addition to even more general supplies such as food and cooking gear, she purchased new tables and chairs so her customers could sit comfortably. She surrounded the wood-frame building in mosquito netting to keep the majority of bugs out of everyone’s food. She even got some tablecloths and posters for the wall (which, I have to say, really do make the ambiance). She’s even considering a music system to keep people entertained while they eat. Now, rather than working for unreliable managers, who demand too much, don’t allow sick time (missing a day of work due to illness is cause for dismissal at most jobs in Sierra Leone), and rarely pay wages, Kumba is her own boss, and even has a small staff to manage herself. She is clearly proud of her restaurant and her accomplishments, and I like to think of her as an “empowered woman” (though this is a super-American term, I think) who has some control over her life and her future.

I know sometimes it can be easy to see the down-side to microfinance, and the burden it places on people. Sometimes we all wish there was another way, or a better way, to make sustainable change for the working poor in developing nations. I agree that dialogue needs to be kept open: it’s the only way more ideas will be generated. I also recognize that for many, microfinance is not all peaches-and-cream, and that it can even make life worse. When I start to get down on it though, it’s nice to go to Kumba’s, grab some onion stew, and bask in the proud glow of a woman who used a small loan to seize control, and create a new future for herself.

Twitter has launched its Spanish-speaking version, a successful, fully crowdsourced project. The rel

Twitter has launched its Spanish-speaking version, a successful, fully crowdsourced project. The release comes from CNET http://news.cnet.com/8301-13577_3-10390027-36.html

Twitter’s foreign language release follows Facebook’s initiative, which has been an example of “community-based” localization, but that has also been plagued by errors in translation, misinterpretations with some unfavourable comments from some Facebook communities (Italian in particular).

Well, Twitter’s Spanish interface begins with a typo on the front page, right up the little bird where “esta pasando” (is happening) has the accent missing over the está….. just click on the above CNET link to check (or change you language setting to Spanish in Twitter). Another one appears when accessing the application from a 3rd-party site with Twithis.

Still, not bad for the cost of it. This brings up the question again about the usefulness of crowdsourcing or community-based translation for brands and how to best apply it. It also brings up the question about how much “bad” translation users can put up with for the purpose of usefulness.

There are companies which are undertaking a very professional approach to crowdsourcing (see Adobe’s efforts, providing even a structure for the Adobe user community). Many are seeing the hype as an opportunity to get localization for free.

Our position at Pangeanic is that whilst crowdsourcing is very good, particularly for under-funded open source projects, it is only complementary to professional efforts when it comes to trusting brand image in a foreign language. Crowdsourcing may be a way of obtaining documentation translated that would otherwise not be translated, and translated by enthusiasts in the field as long as the translated content is not urgent and has a team leader looking after terminology coherence and all the typical issues an experienced project manager might look after.

Other alternatives, such as (statistical) machine-translation with human post-editing can also be considered when time is essential, as long as a proper development within a particular field (or preferably a client-specific development) is in place.

Next time you think languages, think Pangeanic

My brother comes home from his job and we have this conversation:

Bro: When I was in Arizona, I bought a PSP and guess what they had.
Me: What?
Bro: *takes out Relevations: Persona* This! I saw it and knew youd like it.
Me: Oh, wow! Awesome! Thanks! (exchange of hugs)

This was because he remembers me and my nightmare/daydream obsession in P3 about getting to the right level for Helel, then I ended up just played a 2nd cycle for it instead, then again when I complained how hard it was to get a “specific” persona in 4. Then again when I was so happy in Devil Summoner 2 I was running around in circles like I was high on squee-omfgness. Needless to say, he knows by now what a big fan I am of the series…

Actually, I wasn’t that intersted in buying it because I thought everyone looked like rejected circus freaks and it was physically painful to look at them. So, now Im like “Okay, time to give it a try…” Then it reminds of me several games where I hated it at first but then it grew on me toward the end, but then I never end up playing it a second time. Haha.

Okay, well this is kind of a problem to. Now Im going to fail hard or Resist with my… awesome power of resisting! Arrrgh… Maybe I should pretend hes not in the game? It comes just as I was building up a good resistment. (I’ll crush your wall of resist! As I know you can never resist my charm (evil laugh) )

All I have to say is: *Groan and Sigh*

At the annual SEG meeting in Houston, SMT announced the release of KINGDOM 8.5, which includes the introduction of KINGDOM GeoModeling, the first modular extension of SMT’s KINGDOM Advanced product line announced earlier this year. KINGDOM GeoModeling allows organizations to conduct integrated interpretation and 3D geocellular modeling in a single product. Integrating these two workflows enables interpreters and modelers to share the same workspace during prospect evaluation. This process improvement increases productivity and reduces the time needed to generate and evaluate prospects in more detail and with greater accuracy.

Commenting on the announcement, Stan Abele, VP of Product Management at SMT, said: “KINGDOM GeoModeling is another example of SMT’s ongoing focus to bring advanced workflows to every desktop. With SMT’s new GeoModeling, generalist interpreters can now do what was previously the domain of only specialists – interpreters can create sealed earth models, conduct volumetric analyses and estimate reserves.”

KINGDOM GeoModeling incorporates patented 3D gridding technology from JewelSuite, a powerful, easy to use, Windows-based reservoir modeling software package. Unlike older gridding technologies, the second-generation JewelSuite 3D gridding capability allows complex structural environments to be modeled without compromising the integrity and accuracy of the original structural interpretation. With the incorporation of JewelSuite gridding technology into KINGDOM GeoModeling, SMT now offers best of breed in both interpretation and 3D geocellular modeling in a single, fully integrated product.

“Using the JewelSuite software, our consulting teams – including Gaffney, Cline & Associates, RDS, Epic Consulting and GMI – will be better able to provide the most effective integrated solutions for the most complex reservoirs and development options,” said Nathan Meehan, VP Reservoir Technology, Baker Hughes.

            KINGDOM 8.5 has numerous enhancements:

KINGDOM Data Management 8.5 – Replaces the current OpenKINGDOM Domain product. Maintains the historical features of OpenKINGDOM while providing a platform for new functionality.

Ability to transfer data between KINGDOM projects – Users can easily select data and create project subsets, combine data from multiple projects, and run QC scripts against KINGDOM projects to check for erroneous results and correct them directly in the interface.

Ability to save and restore maps and create and apply display templates for all vertical sections.

Improvements in the auto tracker and usability enhancements that make the interface more workflow oriented.

KINGDOM 8.5 is expected to be available in December 2009. Customers who have purchased OpenKINGDOM Domain will receive KINGDOM Data Management as part of their standard maintenance.

October 21, 2009

Yesterday 30 people had been reporting to the authorities in Sweden that they experienced such severe side effects that they felt the need to contact a hospital. Today the number is 140. The swedish newspaper Expressen is the only one in Sweden reporting on these cases and as usual this is most likely only the tip of a rather large iceberg. UPDATE: According to Dagens Nyheter, the number of reported side effects are now a few hours later 190. 1 person dies after the injection but “no direct relation with the injection has been established”. The biggest medical scandal in the history of Sweden has just started.

Even so, Annika Linde, director of The Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control (SMI) manages to spin this into something positive by stating “The vaccine has more side effects than the normal flu vaccine. It is a sign that proves that it gives an effective protection.”

Thousands of Swedes have been vaccinated so far and the reports of side effects are “flooding in” to The Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control (SMI). Annika Linde: “It is obviously so that the vaccine against the swine flu results in more side effects than the normal flu vaccines. That is because the swine flu vaccine contains adjuvants, shark liver oil (squalene), which triggers the immune defense to respond. That also results in that the protection against the virus becomes better.”

Several severe cases of allergic reactions are reported to the unit for medicinal safety. “So far the reported side effects are not unexpected”, says Gunilla Sjölin Forsberg. This unit has now asked some of the many units that vaccinate to report side effects to better get a grip on the situation. This statement alone is shocking since according to normal practice, all side effects should automatically be reported – right?

A nurse who took the shot on wednesday last week is still feeling sick. She got high fever and shivers from the swine flu shot. “-I was shaking in my whole body. It was so sever that I could not even hold a glass of water in my hand.”, Lotta Lindström says.

“- I am now thinking about what it is I have been injected with. I really was affected. It feels really unpleasant.”

Maria Strindlund (27) is not so sure she made the right choice to tae the shot. She also got a severe fever and shivering reaction. “- Since I work as a nurse, I decided it was the best thing to do.”, she says. At first she felt nothing from the vaccinaton, but a few hours later the side effects kicked in. “- I got a extreme pain in my arm. I could no longer lift it.” The came the fever and the shivering. ” _ I was lying in bed shivering and was feeling very cold and stood in a hot shower to get warm.” She says many colleguse who also took the vaccine have had similar reactons. She has been taking many vaccines in the past without any reactions whatsoever.

Rebecka Andersson (39) was the first person to get the shot in Sweden. She became feverish and felt sick to her stomach from the shot. ” – I lost all energy”, she says. “-I am normally never sick so I understood it must be the vaccine.” Her class mates was vaccinated at the same time and she states that five out of nineteen also got sick from the swine flu vaccine.

Lotta Lindström (49), a nurse, states that she got the shot a week ago and still is not well. “- It feels very worrying”, she says. “- I did not sleep anything the night after the shot since the pain in my arm was so severe.” The day after, at work, the fever came. She later had headaches. She still today, a week after the shot feels sick.

Another nurse, Jennely (26), could hardly walk five meters after she got sick from the “swine flu” vaccination. She was completely healthy when she got the shot but the day after she had 39 degrees centigrade fever (102.2 F). “- I could hardly walk the five meters I had to the bathroom”, she says. The fever lasted for three days. sevreal of her colugueges at work had similar experiences. “- I know of at least ten that got fever , we are about 80 people at my workplace.”

“The vaccine acquired by Finland causes aches and swelling at the point of injection for many”, says Ilkka Julkunen, a research professor at the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL). In addition, the vaccine can also cause a light fever.

The reason for the side effects is in the effective ingredient, which is stronger than in ordinary flu vaccines. It’s purpose is to boost the body’s resistance to flu viruses.

“No serious harm has been described”, Julkunen emphasises. “About 20,000 doses of the vaccine acquired by Finland have been administered in tests.”

The testing took place in order to get permission to sell the product, and the side effects were known when the licence was granted. Julkunen says that the shot is worth taking in spite of the possible side effects, which are milder than the actual disease.

In the north of Sweden, health care personnel began receiving swine flu vaccines this week. The Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE) reported that most of those who got the shot experienced mild symptoms. Sweden is using the same vaccine, which is being delivered to Finland.

Elisabet Eero, executive director of the health centre of Övertorneå on the Swedish side told YLE that 80 per cent of those vaccinated suffered symptoms typical of the swine flu, such as fever, headache, muscle pains, and a sore throat.

The symptoms emerged about five hours from receiving the injection. With some people the symptoms were so severe that they stayed at home.

Dozens of people in Finnish Lapland have come down with swine flu in the past couple of weeks. Only a few of the cases are serious, and one patient remains in intensive care in Rovaniemi.

“There are so many confirmed cases that we can now talk about an epidemic”, says Markku Broas, head physician of the unit of infectious diseases at the Lapland Central Hospital in Rovaniemi.

Syntax-based SMT

Tree-to-String SMT

Fugro Data Solutions Ltd., the global E&P data management experts, and SMT, provider of Windows-based geoscientific interpretation software, announced the completion of a major global effort to help a government license oil and gas blocks. Fugro won the contract to assist with promotion of the licensing round with more than 50 blocks were on offer, including organizing global road shows and hosting five data rooms. In the data rooms, the software used to showcase these blocks was SMT KINGDOM. Over 600 people attended presentations and nearly 40 attended the data rooms.

Fugro Data Solutions has been a major user of SMT KINGDOM for over 10 years. They utilize the product for ongoing geophysical data management and data remediation work. Recently this usage has also expanded into collaboration in data rooms for national oil and gas exploration leases and aiding asset sales.

“We used KINGDOM software exclusively for our data rooms in these licensing rounds because it is easy to use, modular and offers high performance. This means we were assured that the bidders would have rapid and easy access to the data they needed to analyze before their purchase,” said Kerry Blinston, head of Technology & National Initiatives at Fugro Data Solutions. “After our success in the recent rounds, we look forward to more future collaboration with SMT.”

“At SMT, we are happy to partner with an elite organization like Fugro Data Solutions. Fugro helps governments all over the world improve their energy sustainability by helping them find new sources of hydrocarbons. They have always been known for their cutting-edge technology, so we are proud to be chosen as Fugro Data Solutions’ exclusive partner for geoscientific interpretation in these data rooms,” said Ken Gardiner, VP of Sales for Europe Africa and Russia at SMT.

Moving forward, Fugro Data Solutions and SMT plan to continue and enhance their good working relationships and review how they can utilize both companies’ global office distribution to better leverage similar opportunities and to enhance clients’ data room experience.

by Stephanie Meyer, KF9

So after three hectic days, 30 hours of flying, a water taxi, a car ride, and a lot of help from friends, I have arrived at my MFI post in Makeni, Sierra Leone, with Salone Microfinance Trust (hereafter, SMT). (Never heard of Makeni? Check it out HERE) Having traveled long-term in Africa before, I was quite proud of the knowledge that I had, and fairly confident in my ability to get around the ins and outs of life in Sierra Leone once I arrived. What I found, however, is that I have a lot to re-learn…

Re-Learning Patience

I find that every country I have ever visited, and even many regions within those countries, have their own rhythm. Here in Sierra Leone, as in many countries in Africa, there is an energetic hum to life, but at times, things seem to move slowly. To my “go, go, GO!” American senses, this can at times be a little frustrating. Take, for example, my water taxi ride from Lungi Airport (located on an island off the coast of Sierra Leone) to Freetown proper. About 500 yards away from the coast of Lungi, we broke down. The battery was dead, and despite attempts by friendly passers-by to jump it, there was no choice but to wait for a replacement battery to arrive from the taxi company. I had to re-learn that frustration, anger, and complaint get you nowhere in these situations (a fact my fellow passengers could also stand to learn…). The best thing to do is just to sit-tight, wait for assistance (which often seems to move at a snail’s pace), and enjoy the scenery. Everything turned out alright, the battery arrived, and we made it to the dock only an hour late. I like to think that in the process I’ve remembered a bit of my patience.

Re-Learning the Art of the Bucket Bath

It sounds like it should be so basic, right? Wrong! For most of my previous stay in Africa (in Uganda, to be specific) I used a bucket bath. By the time I left, I was a pro. So when I arrived at my home last night, and was handed a gallon-pail of water, and directed to the “bathroom”, I thought to myself “psh, piece of cake. I’ve done this a million times”. In what seemed like no time at all, I glanced down to notice myself still covered head-to-toe in suds, and my bucket almost completely empty. When you’ve gotten used to the never-ending stream of water available in a shower, you tend to go a bit overboard on the suds, and be a bit too liberal with limited water supplies. The bucket bath takes finesse, it takes conservation, and it takes focus. It will probably require a bit of practice, but I’m hoping I will have it down again by the time I leave Makeni.

Re-Learning Celebrity Status

One of the facts of life that an ex-patriot in most African countries must deal with is that we tend to stand out. It is rather difficult to “fade into a crowd” and “assimilate with locals”. When I’m in a car, people stare. When I walk down the street, children yell “Hey! Potho!” (roughly translated, “Hey whitey!”). Makeni is not a particularly large town, and SMT has already had two Kiva Fellows. This means that everywhere I go, people say “ah, Kiva!” then exclaim with pride “you know, I knew Adam” or “I knew Nick” (if either of you are reading this, you pretty much rival David Beckham here in town…). As a bit of an introvert, it can be disconcerting to have someone waiting for you all the time, wanting to strike up a conversation. In a whirlwind of names and faces, it can feel very rude when everyone remembers me in the street, and I have to constantly ask people “what is your name again?”. After a long period of blissful American anonymity, it may take me a bit of time to get used to being famous.

Re-Learning to Love the Little Things

Ok, I admit it: this one is easy! It does take some focus and attention, however. There is so much to love and to experience in a new place, and if you aren’t careful to be watching for it every minute of every day, you may miss out on some of the best stuff! A short list of some “favorites” so far from Sierra Leone:

Favorite Fun Fact: Schools in Sierra Leone offer pupils their choice of morning and afternoon shifts, so that even those children who must work are able to receive an education.

Favorite Road Sign: “Love thy neighbor, except when driving. BE WARNED!” (and they weren’t kidding…)

Favorite Taxi Slogan: “Life is Ridiculous” (in so many wonderful ways…)

Favorite Reminder of Home: At night, when the air cools off, frogs collect on the paved roads to soak in the heat they have absorbed all day.

I promise to write more about SMT, loans, borrowers, and microfinance in general in my next post, but for the moment, I am just too engrossed by the wonder that is Sierra Leone to focus on anything else!

You know when you’re watching the morning show and the hosts interview an author, actor, or spokesperson who isn’t in the studio? Chances are that person is on a satellite media tour (SMT). An SMT is a way for a person to pimp themselves or a product across the country in a relatively short amount of time without the costs of travel. In a 7 or 8 hour period their “message” is generally pitched from a small studio to 20 – 25 key morning news and radio shows coast-to-coast in 2 to 5 minute spots. SMTs are a great gig… except for the hours. The usual call time for an SMT is 2:00 in the morning so that everything is set and ready for the east coast shows. The upshot is that by 10 a.m. you’ve put in a full day! FYI – They’re much easier to do from the east coast.

I spent the better part of last night and early morning in a small studio with a lifestyle spokesperson. She was promoting her healthy fall tips. Why does that require a food stylist, you ask? Well, someone has to make the featured entrée look pretty! What layperson could make that healthy steamed broccoli look so fantastically tantalizing? Exactly, that person is me and now I’m going to bed.

Let’s face it friends, everything is moving toward surface mount components. We’ve seen quite a few features here that cover using stencils to populate boards and using ovens to reflow. [Oleg] has put together a tutorial on the process he uses to populate and reflow his own boards.

[Oleg] is the creator of the USB Isolator and therefore has a need to frequently populate the same board. He’s using an acrylic frame that fits the PCB perfectly to hold it in place so that paste and be applied right up to the edges of the board. He ordered a laser cut Kapton stencil for applying the solder. The paste is squeegeed into the stencil holes, the stencil is removed, and parts are placed with tweezers and a steady hand. For the final step, the boards go into an old toaster oven for reflow.

[Oleg] uses temperature marker on his boards to monitor the progress of the reflow. This marker is basically a crayon that begins to melt at a specific temperature. When the board has cooled, the melted mark can be scraped away or removed with alcohol.

Of course this is only really useful if you have a bunch of high-quality boards to populate. But with the relatively low cost of getting professionally made boards we think the need for this type of assembly process is on the rise.
