Muchos de nosotros tuvimos nuestro primer encuentro con Guy Ritchie en 2000 con Snatch; yo por ejemplo me acuerdo perfectamente que fue de mis últimas pelis en los cinemas del centro, en la 24 con Séptima y en aquella ocasión me quedé con la rara sensasión de haber visto algo realmente diferente y pudo haber sido Brad Pitt como nunca lo había visto o ese mundo británico suburbano completamente nuevo para mi. Pero, al final, creo que fue esa forma de contar la historia tan peculiar y condimentada como sólo Ritchie lo sabe hacer.

Durante mucho tiempo viví fascinado con Snatch hasta que me topé con Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels y algo se rompió allá dentro de mí. Sentí que Snatch no era tan original como aparentaba y, por el contrario, era la re-interpretación de una muy buena peli (incluso en el Reino Unido la conocían como Lock, Stock and Six Stolen Diamonds).

En efecto, Snatch es muy buena peli pero Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels lo es mejor por ser la primera y clara inspiración de la segunda.

Sin embargo, la sinergia de las dos pelis en mi opinión es lo que ha hecho a Ritchie un contador de historias únicas, entretenidas y fascinantes. Tal vez, lo único diferente que ha hecho es Swept Away en 2002 cuando recien casado con Madonna le declara su amor con una historia, a su estilo, pero romántica (la carta es devuelta cuando Madonna le pide, dirija su video What It Feels Like for a Girl y se logra entrever lo retorcido de la mente y el estilo de Ritchie).

En esta peli en particular, el acento londinense del bajo mundo es encantador, tiene un empalague que gusta la primera vez que se escucha, hemos estado demasiado acostumbrados a Hollywood y su inglés del Bronx, Queens o Harlem cuando se habla de situaciones marginales. Ahora bien, si se siente la necesidad de sobrevivir, la pobreza y la marginalidad pero de alguna forma también se siente que esta vida de frenesí, vértigo y acción tienen un tono de picardía y hasta felicidad en sus personajes: La vida es una mierda pero el que no se la goce está jodido (pareciera ser entrelíneas la gran moraleja). Puede ser por eso que uno se encariña tan fácilmente con los anti-héroes de sus pelis o se tensiona cuando las situaciones se tornan en contra de ellos. Y es que es tan claro como los apodos o alias; primero que todo, todo el mundo tiene un apodo, es decir, todo el mundo es un malandro o tiene cosas malhabidas – nadie es inocente; segundo que todo, son descripciones de crueldad y de perversidad (Barry “el bautista” y una escena del man ahogando a un fulano, Rory “el quebrador” Breaker, Harry “el hacha”, etc…) y uno como espectador los asume como chistes, como ocurrencias, en un sentido completamente anecdotario.

Con las pelis de Ritchie sucede que las texturas de las escenas y el tono con que son llevadas pareciera que van muy bien aglutinadas por un conector invisible como lo es su banda sonora. Uno está embebido en una persecución y se escucha Zorba el Griego y uno simplemente lo asiente, no encuentra más que una sonrisa al entender el chiste en su literalidad. Para mi, lo importante de Ritchie es que escribe y dirige sus pelis como si fuera un rocker y al final se repite y se repite pero es eso. Un compositor de rock and roll en medio de situaciones londinenses coloridas y particulares.

Muchos se encasillan en un modelo de éxito y es fácil no salirse de ahí por la comodidad que genera el mismo éxito, la misma frase de su peli parece ser su perdición: Lock, Stock and Barrel se usa para denotar estancamiento y ruina. Pareciera que Ritchie con RocknRolla llegó a su tope y necesita un puente para salirse de ahí. Ojalá las superproducciones le den un vuelco a su creatividad y empecemos a observar lo que puede ser el amanecer de un nuevo momento en su vida. Mientras tanto, uno puede quedarse en casa repitiéndose una y otra vez este par de joyas.

Buy.com has a Mob Box Set of movies just in time for Christmas.  ‘Snatch’ is included in the set of four gangster movies.  One of the other movies is ‘Donnie Brasco’ with Johnny Depp, People’s Sexiest Man Alive this year.  I actually liked that movie as well.  Maybe Johnny’s title will help boost sales and more people will get to see Jason at his finest in ‘Snatch’.

I bought a few new pieces and didn’t know what to pair it with.  So I went through my inventory and found some items that were collecting virtual dust-so I put it all together to come up with this look.  The newest collection to my expanding inventory is the Anya skin from Ugly Dorothy.  I fell in love with it-and my favorite part about this skin is the lips; love the glossy lip, so beautiful!     British crime Films are some of my favorites in the action genre. Films like Snatch, Get Carter (the original, not the aborted Stallone version) and the Limey are some of my favorite examples from this genre.  The Crew is not as exemplary as those films but it is constructed very well with a lively cast of characters that you become roped into as you are drawn into the story.  It tries to be misleading like The Usual Suspects, but it is not in that films caliber.  The pace is very brisk and you are always intrigued by what is happening on screen and you wonder if all the characters will remain in one piece when it is over.  It can be very violent at times, as well as immersing itself deeply into sexual depravity.  Definitely a film that does not pull any punches and for that I applaud it.

    The plot basics are this, a crew of hardened criminals are looking for that one last big heist that will pay them huge dividends and allow them to retire from their shady practices.  Ged (Williams) and Ratter (Doughty) are brothers who have big plans for the crew.  They have opposite viewpoints though, Ged wants out while Ratter wants to branch out into the drug trade.  Ratter needs Ged to complete this final heist, but he works angles behind his back as they grow closer to the date of the crime.  Things begin to spiral out of control and it will take all of Ged’s savvy to survive intact at the end of the day.

    This is a gripping and exciting film.  The direction by Vitoria is frenetic and paced very well.  The way he films some of the scenes are really amazing.  I especially liked the one where it switches back and forth between Moby having sex with a prostitute while Ratter and a cohort beat the crap out of some drug addicts.  It is jarring and mesmerizing at the same time.  The action sequences are handled ably well too.  The script is very good too.  It has many twists and turns, and the only complaint I would make is that I saw them all coming too easily.  The motivations and what all the characters did was not surprising in the least.  The cast is very strong.  Williams as Ged always has the main viewpoint, so you side with him for most of the film and you want him to succeed.  Doughty as Ratter, plays him as a unrepentant, opportunistic douchebag and that plays out well.  I also loved McCann as Moby.  He stole every scene he was in, as Ratter’s enforcer who is more obsessed with online porn and sex, he is a delight to watch.  The SFX and the action sequences were great.  The film gets really bloody at times and really wallows in it.  While, the gun fights and chase scenes are pulled off very well and I hope to see more by Vitoria in the action genre.  If you dig seedy British crime films that really tap into the underbelly of this genre, seek this one out.

Confesso que eu nunca assisti um único filme de Guy Ritchie, mas <Silvio Santos> tenho amigos que já assistiram filmes dele, como Jogos, Trapaças e Dois Canos Fumegantes (1998) e Snatch, Porcos e Diamantes (2000) e dizem que o cara manda muito bem </Silvio Santos>. A única coisa que eu sei é que ele é ex da Madonna, e que sua carreira cinematográfica inexistia quando estavam juntos. Assim que se separaram, Ritchie lançou o bem recebido Rock n’Rolla, que também não assisti e não faço idéia de qual é o tema do filme. Então por quê raios estou falando de uma pessoa que não conheço? Pra te mostrar o trailer de Sherlock Holmes:

Na minha cabeça Sherlock Holmes era um tiozão chato que jamais sairia dos livros, e olha só o que esse diretor me faz! Coloca Robert Downey Jr no papel do detetive mais esperto da Literatura! Um Sherlock em uma época mais jovial, inexperiente e sexy vai ser muito bacana.

Me sinto obrigado a passar na locadora e pegar alguns filmes do Guy Ritchie para ver nesse final de semana.

Demorei o máximo que pude para ver esse filme. Para falar a verdade, eu nem queria ver esse filme. A razão? Medo. Meu maior medo era o hype imenso que esse filme carregava em cima dele. A fita nem tinha começado sua vida nos cinemas e todos já diziam que seria “o melhor filme de todos”. Confesso que sou um pouco (pouco é muito e muito é pouco) chato. Principalmente quando gosto de algo. E sempre gostei dos filmes do Tarantino. Não, eu não acho o cara um gênio. Acho um ótimo e divertido diretor. O maior triunfo do Tarantino é saber lidar bem com o clichê. Algo que todos tentam e a maioria fede ao fazer tentar fazer isso. Tarantino trabalhava numa locadora. Ou seja, estava rodeado pelo clichê o dia inteiro. Afinal, os filmes que costumam passar nas televisões das locadoras são, em sua maioria, algo que se tornou clichê com o tempo. Junte se a isso o seu talento e ironia referente à violência e você têm um ótimo diretor. Seu primeiro roteiro foi “Assassinos por Natureza”/ “Natural Born Killers” (com Juliette Lewis, Robert Downey Jr. e Tommy Lee Jones no elenco) o qual Oliver Stone dirigiu. Talvez seu maior roteiro, mesmo sendo bastante revisado pelo próprio Stone.

O primeiro roteiro de Tarantino já mostra o quanto ele é light.

Também não vi Burn After Reading/Queime Depois de Ler pelo mesmo motivo. Muito é falado antes de o filme ser lançado. E também é de um dos meus cineastas favoritos. O fato dos irmãos Cohen terem entrado no mainstream me assusta até hoje.

Quem já acompanha as peripécias deste blog sabe que costumo mais descer o pau do que elogiar: tirando Y: The Last Man, Ren & Stimpy e Billy & Mandy eu fui só reclamações e maldições. Mas de qualquer forma, não fiz tantas resenhas assim…

Então já deve ter alguém pensando: lá vai esse chato descer o pau no filme. Mas…

…o filme é muito bom! É melhor que Pulp Fiction? Não! É melhor que Kill Bill? É igual e diferente do mesmo modo. Ver um filme do Tarantino tem sempre uma sensação parecida, mais ou menos como ver Kubrick pós-Lolita. A sensação é parecida e os filmes não. Tarantino já conseguiu deixar sua marca no seu modo de fazer filmes. Não sei como explicar, mas quem conhece o trabalho dele já sacou o que eu quis dizer. Assim como Kubrick tinha aquele modo de sempre valorizar aqueles sorrisos aterrorizantes, cenas no banheiro e outras coisas. Não me entendam mal. Não estou comparando um com o outro. Kubrick era um gênio. Um dos maiores da história do cinema. Tarantino ainda não o é. É ótimo e divertido. Mas não sei. Ainda falta algo e tive a impressão de que com Bastardos Inglórios ele deu mostras de que está à procura desse algo mais.

Bastardos Inglórios é o chamado Historical Fiction (ficção histórica). A fita se passa na Segunda Guerra Mundial (entendam que esse era mais um dos meus medos: Nazistas de novo?!). Mas Tarantino não esgotou ainda mais o assunto. O nazismo e a guerra podem passar apenas como coisas secundárias.

Agora, para não falar só de Tarantino, o elenco foi muito bem escolhido. Começando com Christoph Waltz (“Ordinary Decent Criminal” / “Um Criminoso Decente” – vejam esse filme também!) no papel de Hans Landa. Waltz é o melhor no filme. Sua atuação é bárbara e mereceu o Cannes de melhor ator. Michael Fassbender (“Bando of Brothers” e “300”) como Lt. Archie Hicox (o inglês que troca tiros na virilha no pub) muito bem também. Eli Roth (demorei a lembrar quem era esse doidão. Ele faz parte do grupo Splat Pack, que é um grupo de cineastas de filmes de terror que decidiram voltar a fazer filmes de terror mesmo – pesados, “Saw”/ “Jogos Mortais” é de um diretor desse grupo. Eli Roth é o diretor de “O Albergue” que, confesso, não sou fã) é Donny Donowitz / O Urso Judeu, impecável sua ultima aparição na qual ele atira em Hitler até o rosto dele virar pedaços de carne moída no liquidificador. Diane Kruger (a Helena em “Troy” / “Tróia” e Abigail Chase em “A Lenda do Tesouro Perdido”) interpreta Bridget von Hammersmark. Diane Kruger já foi uma modelo de sucesso na década de 90, se não estou enganado. Que bom que deixou de ser modelo, parece que sob a correta direção e em um filme bom (diferente dos citados na qual ele atuou) ela tem talento. Daniel Brühl (“Adeus Lênin” e “The Edukators”) é Fredrick Zoller, ou o herói de guerra alemão. O cara é realmente bom. É só ver os filmes que o cara fez. Til Schweiger (“Tomb Raider” e “Rei Arthur”) é  o alemão que muda de lado. O cara no filme é hilário. Não sabia que o cara era bom (afinal olha os filmes que eu citei que ele fez), mas ele o é. Mélanie Laurent faz Shoshana. Essa eu não conhecia, mas também é muito boa. Omar Doom é Omar Ulmer. Gedeon Burkhard é o tradutor dos Bastardos. B.J. Novak (“The Office”) é o Little Man (não lembro bem como ficou em português, se foi Pequenino ou algo do tipo). Mike Myers (o Austin Powers) é o general inglês que comanda a idéia do assassinato de Hitler. Rod Taylor (“A Máquina do Tempo” de 1960, baseado no livro de H.G. Wells) faz o Wiston Churchil. Denis Menochet (“Hannibal Rising”) faz o fazendeiro francês do inicio do filme. Christian Berkel (“Operação Valquíria”) é o barman do pub onde rola aqueles tiros na virilha. Jacky Ido (esse eu não conheço) faz Marcel. August Diehl (“The Counterfeiters” e “The Ninth Day”, ambos alemães) é o oficial da Gestapo, especialista em sotaques, que troca tiros na virilha. Alexander Fehling (“And Along Come Tourists”, também alemão) é o cara que está comemorando o nascimento do filho onde dão tiros na virilha. Sylvester Groth é Josef Goebbels, ministro da propaganda de Hitler. Groth também interpretou Goebbels na comédia My Leader – The Truly Truest Truth about Adolf Hitler (também alemã). Quem também interpretou Goebbels foi Martin Wuttke – que é Hitler no filme de Tarantino – no filme Rosenstrasse (alemão também, mas se tiverem tempo – e paciência para achar – vejam). Julie Dreyfus (Sofie Fatale em “Kill Bill”) é a interprete francesa de Goebbels. O curioso é que parte do elenco desse filme são também diretores. Um exemplo disso é Enzo G. Castellari que no filme é um general nazista. Castellari é um diretor italiano, conhecido pelos seus Spaghetti Western como Any Gun Can Play, Kill Them All and Come Back Alone, Seven Wichesters For a Massacre e,…, The Inglorious Bastards – Quel maledetto treno blindato. Os bastardos de Castellari e de Tarantino são parecidos. Com certeza o filme de Castellari inspirou Tarantino. Os Bastardos no filme de Castellari são soldados americanos que estão sendo levados para uma prisão militar quando um ataque aéreo alemão acaba os “soltando” ao matar todos os guardas. Os soldados decidem fugir e acabam fazendo parte de um plano que consiste em roubar o giroscópio de um foguete V-2 nazista que se encontra em um trem extremamente protegido por nazistas.

The Ingloriou Bastards de Castellari.

Ué, e o Brad Pitt? Bom, Brad Pitt é um grande ator. Quando ele não faz papéis de heróis entediados ou de galã supersexy (como Aquiles em “Tróia” ou Sr. e Sra. Smith) ele manda muito. É só ver filmes como Thelma & Louise, Across the Tracks, Kalifornia (acho que foi aí onde ele aprendeu esse sotaque que ele tem em Bastardos Inglórios), Interview with the Vampire, Lendas da Paixão, Seven (Sete Pecados Capitais), Os Doze Macacos, Fight Club (Clube da Luta), Snatch (mais uma vez ele faz um sotaque genial), Babel, …, deu para entender, né? Ou seja, quando o papel e o filme é bom, ele arrebenta. Por isso não vou ficar falando o quanto ele foi bem nos Bastardos. Tentei falar mais dos outros que, para a grande maioria, são desconhecidos.

Como não poderia deixar de ser…

…em filme de tarantino nunca falta sangue e nem Samuel L. Jackson. Ele não atua, mas é o narrador. Poucas vezes narra, é verdade, mas ele está lá.

Minha conclusão é: se não viu, veja por você mesmo. Se já viu, sabe do que estou falando.

I usually review new films on this blog, but I passed on a chance to see “Pirate Radio” this weekend, and with good reason: “Almost Famous” was barely tolerable, so the idea of “Almost Famous on a Boat” seemed a bit too precious. Whether or not it was that is irrelevant; even moviegoers in its native England stayed away in droves. If a film on such a small budget with such a big cast and such good music can’t make a profit, beware. Besides, I find rock movies in general a bit too hard to swallow as legitimate entertainment.

Anyway, I decided to lay out my first impression of the 2007 American cut of Guy Ritchie’s post-Snatch film “Revolver.” To be delicate, I’ll borrow a phrase from Richard Hammond: “Ambitious but Rubbish.” To be not-so-delicate: It made our heads hurt, and after what seemed like four hours we had to turn it off before they repeated the “formula” for the umpteenth time.

To paraphrase Ian Malcolm, Guy Ritchie seems bent on wielding the concepts and ideas of Kabbalah like a kid who’s found his dad’s gun. It’s fine to borrow religious concepts; Pi did a fine job of it; in only 84 minutes it was able to at least appear profound and mystique-y and dredge up questions. Revolver has no such success, because it doesn’t care if the audience is confused, and seems to relish their confusion Also, the film itself seems to be as confused as we are, so shows us Turkish going through a windshield backwards really slowly. I also don’t see why Guy Ritchie had to make a third film about professional criminals, especially one that was far worse than the other two.

And why did Jason Statham have to narrate this film as well? The whole time it sounded like Snatch with all the good bits removed and replaced with seemingly infinite number of scenes featuring Ray Liotta in various states of undress trying too hard to express his anger and frustration to his unflappable lieutenant, followed by a seemingly infinite number of scenes of Andre 3000 (dressed as…Andre 3000) apparently reading cue cards in monotone, punctuated by variations of “Shut the Fuck up” from Vincent Pastore. Again and again, Turkish tries to get an explanation out of these guys, and hits a wall. So do we. Interest is rapidly lost.

Yeah, there’s a white masculine pillar, feminine black pillar, and the Turkish green pillar in the middle, and chess has 32 pieces, ooooooooooo, so mystical. Too bad it all feels cheap and irrelevant and futile amongst all the horrible acting, longwinded musical interludes, and lack of direction. It feels, empty; hollow; a bunch of overly-styled nothing.

Maybe i just need to give it another watch, as is typical of Ritchie films, but to be frank, I and everyone watching wished we had stopped it a bit sooner, since there was still a half-hour of the stuff left to watch and we were already turned off of it. A rewatch sound like and even bigger waste of time.

I have no doubt Sherlock Holmes will be better (if for no other reason than Downey Jr.,) But after two very good and very watchable crime capers and one absolute stinker, my confidence in Guy Ritchie was definitely shaken. And he was with Madonna, who just looks wierd nowadays. Not so easy on the eyes anymore.

So yeah, I played Russian Roulette with “Revolver” and lost, badly. We had to watch “La Jetee” afterwards just to get the bad taste out of our mouths. Now that’s a movie…and only 28 minutes long.

First, thank you J for introducing me to this amazing movie.

Now, why is Snatch so awesome??? Well….

#1. Truly iconic characters — namely Brick Top, Turkish, Boris the Blade, Mickey, Bullet Tooth Tony, and of course, Tyrone.

#2. Brad Pitt. I’m not one of those girls who thinks Brad is the “be all, end all” but I happen to think he and his pikey accent are incredibly sexy in this movie.

#3. Some of the best movie quotes of all time, such as this one as said by Brick Top: “You’re on thin f*cking ice my pedigree chums, and I shall be under it when it breaks.”

#4. Awesome music.

#5. The cutest dog ever. Even with that squeaky toy.

#6. A hilarious story. “Unscrupulous boxing promoters, violent bookmakers, a Russian gangster, incompetent amateur robbers, and supposedly Jewish jewelers fight to track down a priceless stolen diamond?” Only in Snatch.

#7. Really cool camera angles and scenes — like in the final fight, when the guy knocks Mickey out (almost!) and he goes flying through the air in slow-motion, for a moment he’s totally horizontal, and lands in the water.

I  could probably go on, but why don’t you just watch it yourself. You’ll thank me later! (Of course, if you don’t like it, oh well.)
