I HOPE YOU LIKE JAMMIN' ALSO

NBA Jam Tournament Edition is one of those games I’d definitely enjoy much more if I had any interest whatsoever in pretending to play basketball. I know it’s stupid and missing the point, but I prefer to do things in video games that I can’t do in real life. Granted, I can’t play basketball worth a damn (I assume), but if I wanted to, I could likely learn. Maybe I’ll go down to the local YMCA and try and hire a basketball coach (I won’t)!

In order to write this review I selected the “Head to Head” setting; it pits two men I’ve never heard of against two other men I’ve never heard of. Ok, that’s not entirely true: I do know who Dennis Rodman is due to his flamboyant antics and the fact that I dislike everyone associated with PETA. I’m totally cool with vegetarians and vegans so long as they don’t try to talk me out of tearing the neck out of a baby lamb, which is my traditional English breakfast. And they always do! Every. Single. Time. “It’s in pain! Can’t you hear it screaming?” “It’s bleating and it won’t be able to much longer anyway. Pass the butter.” Mmm. Baby lamb neck in butter.

This game looks and sounds decent enough; there are fairly clear pictures of each player, and the little announcer voice isn’t bad for a SNES game. Sadly, I like terrible video game voices. They make me laugh, which is like a little gift from the people who make the games. The gift of laughter. That I waste. On everything.

The gameplay was quick and furious, with an awful lot of running back and forth. It made me tired just watching! I had to stand up so I could sit down again. Even though I’d never played before and had no idea what I was doing, the controls were intuitive enough that I managed to tie my opponents. I did find myself grinning every time I slapped the ball away from my opponents, even though it made an odd barking sound effect every time I did so. Perhaps my spirit animal (a snickerdoodle) was giving me aid?

I bet this game is awesome to play with a bunch of drunk friends who hopefully aren’t racist. Stop being racist, you drunks!

Video Game Review Super Mario Kart Super Nintendo 1992 Developer: Nintendo EAD Publisher: Nintendo W

Video Game Review
Super Mario Kart
Super Nintendo
1992
Developer: Nintendo EAD
Publisher: Nintendo

When Nintendo made Super Mario Kart back in 1992, Mario had yet to be pimped out to every single concept imaginable. The concept of Super Mario Kart was simple and to a certain degree, insane. Insane is sometimes a good thing in gaming and this game is fantastic.

Super Mario Kart takes the racing concept and turns it on its head. Not only are you racing around the course but you also need to pick up coins scattered throughout the course. On top of the racing, weapons are waiting for you to be picked up for you to deliver punishment to your competition (or receive it if you’re unlucky enough).

There are several gameplay options; grand prix, time trials, match race (head to head) and the famous battle mode. The grand prix mode has you racing a set of races in where you need to place as high as possible. The better the standing, the more points you get for the race. Finishing a particular cup on top nets you a gold trophy. There are three speed classes available (only two are available at the start) and twenty courses (the last five only becoming available later in the game). Scoring all the gold trophies in the 100cc mode opens up more tracks. It is not a pushover mode and the hardest difficulty (150 cc) can provide some challenge. The time trial mode is pretty much what it sounds like; race around a track solo for the best time. The match race mode allows you to race head to head against another person. This mode does not have any computer opponents but the grand prix mode has a two player option if that’s what you’re looking for.

One of the greatest parts of the game is the battle mode. Two players are thrown into an arena and only one will survive. This isn’t a race as your goal is to take out your opponent with weapons. You and your opponent have three balloons floating above you. Three hits from the various weapons will pop all the balloons.

Gameplay is pretty simple. D-pad controls the steering. You have a button for gas and another for the brakes. The shoulder buttons are configured to do a mini-hop which allows you to drift into a turn. There is also a button dedicated to launching weapons.

There are obstacles littered all over the track like pipes and mud puddles. Coins are scattered throughout the course too. Collecting them improves your speed. Driving over a question block will give you a weapon or a power-up. There are tons of items up for grabs like mushrooms which give a speed burst, koopa shells which act as missiles, and a lightning bolt which shrinks all your competitors down to miniature size for a short period of time, among other items.

You have the choice of eight different characters from the Mario universe including the main man himself, his brother Luigi, Yoshi, and even the villainous Bowser. Each cart handles differently. For example, Yoshi handles adequately and accelerates well but lacks a good top speed. Bowser on the other hand doesn’t get pushed around on the course by other racers and has a great top speed but his acceleration is equivalent to that of a tortoise. There really isn’t a character better than all the others as all of them have pros and cons. It’s up to the player to determine which style they prefer.

Graphically it was one of the best looking games on the SNES taking full advantage of the system’s capability of producing Mode 7 graphics. Sadly, Mode 7 looks almost as bad as some of the blocky stuff that came out of the Saturn-Nintendo 64-PS1 early years. However, the game still looks good enough that the graphics don’t hurt the experience; they just don’t enhance it either.

The game handles well although it does take a while to get used to the handling. Most will drive around the course like a drunk their first time playing. This is especially true if you’re used to using an analog stick in driving games. It does feel like you’re going backwards if you’ve played nothing but analog racing games. After a few races though, the controls feel like second nature.

The game design is incredible. The courses are extremely fun to navigate as there are shortcuts scattered throughout some courses. The courses are hectic enough to never be boring but also forgiving enough to never leave you frustrated (except maybe for the sadistic Rainbow Road which is amazingly fun because it is so sadistic). The battle mode is a lot of fun although it would have been nicer to have more tracks. Taking out a friend with a red shell is one of the most satisfying things that can be done in a video game.

Nintendo’s Super Mario Kart is a fantastic racing game on the SNES. Despite the graphics, it still is a blast to play today. Definitely worth playing even if you’re used to other more sophisticated iterations of the series.

Infelizmente, nunca tive o SNES. Ah, queridos amiguinhos nerds, aquilo adoçou minhas tardes.

Cresci jogando Prince of Persia, Super Mario World e Alladin.

Although Nintendo has lost a gamer following with the Wii, they have managed to pump out a few interesting games. The new Super Mario Bros. game being one them. Nintendo finally gets us with this one, platform style! The way Mario has been played for years. Now you have a culmination of all the classic Mario games in one. Not only are there new levels, items and foes, but now you can play simultaneously with a friend. Although Nintendo has let me down in the recent years, I believe the old school fans of Nintendo can appreciate this one.

Seriously, science and genetics have failed me yet again. If there isn’t part gorilla DNA in there, I’ll eat my hat. That is, assuming “Python” here doesn’t eat it first.

Alright, you couple of charm-school rejects are on my team. No, don’t try to thank me, I don’t need you to get yourselves all exhausted before the match from attempting to form the right brain waves in order to mimic human speech. Just put on your tights and matching knee pads, drag your knuckles into the ring, and beat each other repeatedly with folding chairs until one team suffers enough blunt-force trauma to the head that they can no longer recall how to properly SNAP INTO A SLIM JIM!!

And no lobbing of feces this time. That’s why they won’t let you back into the Georgia Dome.

To the victor, a giant belt of leather and precious metal, one that will be displayed prominently to win the adoration of the advertisers, action-figure manufacturers, and females of the species. The burly, bearded females of the species…

And where do I stand? Behind the losers, my hands fumbling about the gamepad, trying but failing to properly make heads or tails as to how to keep from getting repeatedly thrown against the ropes and clotheslined. The internet tells me this is actually a great game, though on the condition that you take the time to read the instructions to know the various moves and controls.

For over three years, Nintendo has been offering some of their best games from days gone by over the Wii’s Virtual Console. It’s also taken them the same amount of time to release one of their all time SNES classics; Super Mario Kart. The delay was a deliberate effort to make Mario Kart Wii more desirable despite the fact it’s been more than capable of selling on it’s own merits. From Monday in the US – coming to Europe shortly after – we’ll be able to download SMK for 800 Wii Points (£4) and play the first and best version of the kart racer. It’s a shame that no enhancements have been added such as online multiplayer but that’s more of a pipe dream than an realistic possibility.

Not stopping at that classical offering, Nintendo will also be releasing the SNES descender Pilotwings allowing a pixelated but technically brilliant take on skydiving. Then when the year is almost up, Super Smash Bros for N64 will join SMK and Pilotwings rounding off an awesome holiday of retro titles. Once again, Super Smash Bros has it’s successor on the Wii already but it’s nice to have the opportunity to experience the originator of the franchise. Many fans (like me) may still have their SNES and N64 copies of these games as a treasured possession but laziness is a powerful thing and soon we’ll be able to play them without having to get up and change the game cartridge or indeed console. Genius.

I went on a flying visit to Guildford today to stare open-mouthed at the new Mario Game in real shop

I went on a flying visit to Guildford today to stare open-mouthed at the new Mario Game in real shops. It’s a big thing, releasing a new Mario title, but made even more important by its 2D homage to my personal favourite all time Nintendo classic; Mario World. I think the story goes something like this…

Somewhere in the South West, a young and longhaired gamer was buckling up in his friend Matt’s borrowed car to head for the dizzy heights of London to the long gone COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT SHOW. 2 hours of motorway and some terrible metal tapes later, and we are paying our £8 to get in to what was then, the pinnacle of every gamers life; a big room full of stuff you can’t buy in shops. My target: A SNES with Mario World and F-Zero. Oh yes, I had saved up for some time for this bundle of wonderment. I was so committed to my purchase that I had rung ahead to book said package. I craned my neck as I fought through the crowds to the corner of the hall where I could see the name of the shop in important black and white text. I waited anxiously, recounting my huge wad of cash (thanks Mum) before finally catching the eye of the lady manning the stall. “You have a SNES pack for David Millard?” I ask her nervously. Then, she produces the items, gloriously untouched and still in their packaging. This was a fundamental moment in my gaming history. But there is a point to this story. This story is about obsession and passion for something. Do you remember the last time you yearned for something with the moral abandon of a child waiting quietly in their bed on Christmas Eve, building that Lego Technic set in your head over and over until you lose conciousness?

These days, I look back on that SNES moment with huge fondness. The agonising search for Pilot wings and Final Fight. The overly long drive home. The painful journey to my bedroom, followed by the hugely exciting unboxing and cable fiddling. Then… Joy of joy… that Mario World intro screen. Bliss. Unmatched bliss.

So, I know when I am getting Mario Wii now and I have decided to try my best to dream about it, obsess over it and then hopefully, when I am given it, enjoy the intro screen with the same tummy rumbling joy I got from my first Mario purchase.

I wonder how many levels there are?…

A.K.A. Final Fantasy II circa 1991. MOST. AWESOME. GAME. Ever …. Anyone who has ever played

A.K.A. Final Fantasy II circa 1991.

MOST. AWESOME. GAME. Ever ….

Anyone who has ever played this game…. SNES, perhaps?… will know what I’m saying. Better than Myst. Better than Nethack (I just keep dying). Better than Sims. Arguments can commence now, but in my experience… FFIV is the most enjoyable game I’ve ever played.

So much so that I’m searching a working SNES console and the original cartridge for FFII. on eBay of course. A few years ago, you could find a SNES for $20. Now, I think it’s going for over $50. A hefty sum for an outdated system.

Anyway, Final Fantasy II or IV (as released on the Nintendo DS with updated graphics) has an amazing storyline with the most memorable characters ever. Remember when Cecil becomes a Paladin? Remember Palom and Parom? Kain? Tellah? Rosa? Rydia? I wanted to name my future child Rydia when I was 7 years old. And of course… the Chocobos.

Oh, yeah… and the music is absolutely phenomenal.

I can’t get into the story because there is too much and to talk about it wouldn’t do it justice. Playing the game, however, would. Just watch this video:

I’d say at least three times a week I browse through nearly everything offered instantly from

I’d say at least three times a week I browse through nearly everything offered instantly from Netflix. Typically there’s a heavy glass of red wine sitting next to me on my floor – that needs to be vacuumed with something of industrial strength – that I’ll get to once I put my X-Box controller down. My intention is to see what is new on “instant watch” and then start buffering up a movie that hopefully doesn’t suck. A good lot of the time I browse for too long then flash through my queue and can’t decide on any one thing. Why? Too many options. I’ll even work together with my roommate Jordan to widdle down the choices, but usually I give up and head to my room for a comic or two before bed.

Sometimes too much is just too much.

I was born in ‘84 and I’ve seen the Super Nintendo (de)evolve into the Dreamcast then grow wings and become the 360. Without having to read and recite a book about science, I’m saying that I’ve witnessed technology grow exponentially. Today I have the option to watch hundreds of movies with the flick of joystick and a little pressure applied to a brightly colored button. Oh, Band McMusic just re-released their live EP from the secret show they played in Hungary – circa ‘98 – during that accidental aerial bombardment from NATO Y-Wing. ”Type type type” then “click click click” and I have that album sitting on my desktop. It’s obvious that we’re spoiled when it comes to the entertainment that’s a hyperlink away and I’m not sure how I feel about it.

X-Box Live just added Last FM as an application for it’s fancy Gold Members – who pay 40 some dollars a year – and are given many more reasons to never bask in natural light. Not that this invention is anything new to the interwebs, but I can pick an artist, make a station via that artist, and listen to music within the same vein of said artist. I know, this sounds like the radio if you were able to put it under the microscope and manipulate what you wanted from it. It is, but sometimes it’s just too much.

When I was a kid I had the radio, a small book of CDs, and the local Video Barn for entertainment. I was content too. As the years have passed and I now put onions on nearly every sandwich I make, it’s obvious my likes and dislikes have expanded. My Mom would slice onions in our kitchen back home and just the scent was enough to keep me away from our downstairs for hours. What used to sate or deter me as a child isn’t the case anymore. Now I need three new movies in the mail twice a week to keep me from clawing at the walls. There has to be a refresher from some new band I’ve never heard – or given any time to – at least a couple times a month, otherwise I start biting my nails down to the cuticle. I’m American, I drink beer out of the can, and I need to be fucking entertained 24 hours out of the God damn day. Yeah, it’s true.

I think I kinda lost my train of thought at some point in this rant, so I’ll get to some kind of point.

We used to worship idols made of stone and wood then men who said they were actual gods filled in that spot. After that we started to hear these stories from wise elders about these powerful beings that have always been and will always be, so it was the smart choice to praise them. Now we have the internet. The internet knows all, tells all, and does all. What else do we need? If this laptop I’m typing on had a vagina built into it, could pour alcohol out one of it’s many ports, and ejected the makings for a sandwich from the CD drive… yup, wouldn’t leave the house.

I could go on with this, but I’d probably end up running my words and thoughts into solid wall of nonsense, which would most likely drive me to making dick and fart jokes. Let me save you from that and tell you about some music you should be listening to.

1. Bang Maiden, they’re from San Francisco (make some unjustified generalizations from that fact alone because that’s what I’d do). On Halloween last month they played their first show at The Parkside in the Misson and they definitely fit the bill if you wanna drink, dance, and bang your head. They just uploaded a three song demo EP for download and I’m a fan. Hardcore - and whatever sub-genre within the same realm you babble about – is one of those sounds that’s in a bit of a slump as of late. Don’t get me wrong, there are many greats acts currently putting out original and good tunes, but the majority is nothing more than the same old riffs that started in the ’80s, got reworked in the ’90s, and has continued the same cycle into the 2000’s. What do these guys have that sets them apart from the fodder? They don’t have drums, they got beats. Patrick is the programming wizard in the three-piece that mixes the backbone of sound , which gives the group an artificial rhythm that is danceable… like boner-jams danceable. It’s not too often you can listen to something that cuts a rug all Samurai Shodown 2 (I suck at that game), yet urges your veins to replace some of that red with drunk and maybe punch some random, all in good fun of course. It’s dirty and fun, so give it a listen, go get tested afterwards, and pay me the ten bucks you owe.

2. Now these guys just got dredged out of the dungeon – I call it my iPod – and put a real dumb smile on my face. Since the mammoth performance I witnessed a while back at the West Seattle Legion Hall, Giant became Brave Young, but the sound hasn’t changed a bit. I’ve been allowing my music to grow a little more grand these days (drugs are bad), so the music I’m seeking needs to consume me and wall me up inside of it. Brave Young is an undertaking that weighs on your ear drums with its heavy guitars and bass. The sound becomes one looming entity that is lumbering with each bang of the drums and it’s one voice roars just far enough from the instruments before it melds back into the mass of noise. This is one of those bands that I may never see live again, but from that one show – whatever summer it was ago – I feel lucky.

3. Oh yeah, I’m doing it. Oingo Boingo has been the musical “first ice cold beer of the day” for me lately. It’s fun, it’s upbeat, it can get a little spooky, and it’s one of those aspects of the ’80s that I don’t hate. I’m not saying the 80’s were horrible, I mean come on, Earth Girls Are Easy? You don’t have to say anything, just try not to get lost in Jeff Goldblum’s eyes, even though he does have mind powers. There really isn’t any reason for me to explain any further. Fire this shit up and let Danny Elfman do the rest. Watch this too:

What’s not to love about Mr. Do!?

It’s a handful of my favourite arcade games thrown into a blender – Dig Dug, Pac-Man and Burger Time, to my mind – and the result is pure game.

The Can-Can blares triumphantly as Mr. Do cheekily evades his pursuers, digging cherries from the earth and dropping apples on those unfortunate enough to straggle behind.

Mr. Do can be successfully controlled with one hand, leaving the other hand free for sipping gingerbread lattes, as I have done for this review.

There’s so much to do in each bite-sized level! And while I don’t pretend to understand much of what is going on here, it’s all so goddamn glorious.

Mix aus Beat em Up Subgenres

Wakka wakka wakka wakka wakka wakka.

A classic noise that everyone even remotely familiar with video games will instantly recognize. Is it even possible to live in this era without having heard the passing of a Mr. or Ms. Pac-Man?

Wakka wakka wakka wakka wakka wakka.

In Somalia, a small child huddles for safety in the cabin of a boat beset by pirates, and yet somehow he hears this noise.

Wakka wakka wakka wakka wakka wakka.

Deep in the Amazon Rainforest, an animal you’ve never even fuckin’ heard of is bopping its tiny misshapen head to the beat of Pac.

Wakka wakka wakka wakka wakka wakka.

I don’t need to review Ms. Pac-Man, because we’ve all reviewed it already. It’s inside all of us.
