Today it snowed like crazy!! I took a picture of my feet and of how powdery the snow was. Here they are:

This was taken a while ago at Kingsway Garden Mall. That place is pretty cool!

So what ended up happening was great for EASIA has a fun time trying to review. It just shows that I gotta go over a few things and really really focus on chemistry.

On the way home I decided to stop by Superstore to get some Crispers as it was cold and I knew I needed some energy by the time I reached Millgate Transit station. So I went and Superstore had just recently finished renovating so I kinda got lost sorta. Here’s what the exterior looked like… I don’t think I was allowed to take photos inside so I didn’t.

Since it was snowing it doesn’t look so good. Maybe I should take one in the summer and then compare. Heh, that sounds like fun. Anyways, it was a difficult way to get home. The snow was about… 20 cm or 30 cm? But there was a lot of snow so when the bus stopped it had difficulty moving again. Due to that I had to take a 61 home so that I could get home on time. Horrible walking home. Basically people didn’t shovel the sidewalk so walking on the road was much cooler than on the sidewalk. Everytime a car came, oh time to go search for the pavement… and once it passed back on the road. While walking towards my house I was basically in the middle of the road. Fun times… I should have taken a photo. Darn missed my chance. But it was really cold when the wind picked up while I was going home. It like picks an opportuned time to harrass me. Sheesh, anyways home safe and sound even though I’m a little cold nothing but some hot chocolate can’t fix.

I can’t wait for the exams to be over. I really don’t like studying…

I’m slowly running out of lip balm so I’m thinking of getting SoftLips as my next product instead of going to Rocky Mountain Soap Company for my current lipbalm which is like $5. Yeah, might get it today with the gang depending if its in stock or not.

I was thinking when I head out to WEM with my brother the Princess and the Frog will be out so I wonder if I will be able to go and watch it…. I would really like to. Been a really long time since I’ve been to a theatre to watch a movie. I should ask Quyen about it. Anyways, I have to do laundry today so I’m off to do that and after studying. Hwaiting!!

I am sorry that update shave been less frequent lately. Stress from school has taken over. And now I am becoming more ill by the day. Today I stayed home from school, sadly I wasn’t able to sleep in but having Randy get off work early to take care of me was lovely. I work tonight five to ten. I am not excited, but I hate calling in. So if it is dead, I will be going home lol. The worst migraine of my life is taking over me at the moment and i am sick of it. i am just about to go upstairs and take some shots of the winter storm we are having today, I am so glad I didn’t have to go to school. I would hvae froze! I didn’t get any homework done today. Why? well, it is hard to get work done when you want to vomit and cry. That is the last thing on my mind as of yet.
I have also been thinking of starting a 365 experiment, if you wish to call it that. Cause I don’t know if i’d be able to do it. If you are unaware of what that is. It is kind of like a blog but with photos. Very popular on flickr, my favourite site! I need to work on my photography skills and portfolio and I believe this could help. The only problem is producing a photo for every day. I feel like I may only be able to do a few months before being unable to produce quality photos. And I will also have a lot of my photos taken in the winter, which started today. Yay! Thoughts? If so, when should I actually start it?

SNOW DAY!!! = )

This is why I actually have time to sit and type away my heart here. Grab a cup of cocoa, it might be a long post!

First, to those that keep looking for this, I am sorry! I want to tell you I haven’t had time . . . . .but we all have the same amount of time . . . . . the truth is this blog ceased being a priority as I felt like I wasn’t moving forward. These are the times I get frustrated and I just quit . . . . and quit I did! In more ways than writing.

Second, to those who have written and re-written about your weightloss journey, I am convinced I have no answers, but I KNOW who does. So I thought since I’m sitting here with a boatload of snow, the gift of a day off of work, I thought I would update you with where my heart is today . . . . . . .

I have this really cool purple leather journal (that matches my Oswald Chambers Utmost devotional in case you care) that I write in when I have something huge that I want to keep in a special place . . . . otherwise I am the Queen of spiral notebooks and if it’s less important it will go in one of those. Well, today the purple journal came out . . . . this is going to be serious!!! God and I have some time alone, and He was very clear first thing this morning that part of this snow day was a gift He was giving to Himself as well as me . . . . He wanted some extended time alone with me that has been long over-due so He threw some snow on the ground to get some time with me . . . . . and I am always eager to comply with this kind of offer.

These days are my favorite . . . . I have the house to myself . . . . . put on my coziest jammies, grabbed all my Bible study and devotional books, and headed off to the couch to watch it snow and enjoy the morning with my Daddy. My journal time started off with lots of thanks for this day. He gave me the best I can get . . . . . time!!! It is truly my most valuable commodity!! I will give my money away easier than I give my time. It is truly very very precious to me!! But giving a bunch of it to God this morning was my delight . . . . . what a sweet time . . . . . full of joy and thanks and fun . . . . . . . until the table turned!! Not sure what order these thoughts came, because they came so fast, so they may sound wild to you . . . they felt wild to me as they were coming down!!!

When it comes to my weight I am afraid of failing . . . .yet again!!! My fear of failure keeps me from even starting. I have a strong belief that if I can’t do this well for 365 days, why even start. Hmmmmmm . . . . . as I type this I’m hearing the agreement . . . . I have bought in to a lie of satan . . . . . that is not the truth. Here is what I have learned from a friend . . . . I take the lie ( I can’t do this well for 365 days so I’m not even gonna start) AND I turn it into a truth . . . . my truth: I don’t have to worry about tomorrow, or 365 days from now, I only have to let God guide me through today and listen for Him to guide and direct my food choices and my exercise choices.

I hear God talking to me about this fear of failing at weightloss in a new and different way . . . . . I think this is God’s personal invitation to me to enter into a huge faith journey with Him. Not sure what this means. . . . but it’s something about turning my fear into faith . . . . standing on faith, and not the fear of failure.

BELIEVE – believe what my eyes do not yet see
TRUST – that my God is able and willing to set me free in this area
OBEY – listen and follow . . . . . LISTEN and FOLLOW!!!!!!!!

Hmmmmmmm . . . . this is going to take time to learn, time to do, time to make it into a lifestyle . . . . . . time . . . . . . . .

I want to wake up tomorrow and weigh 110 pounds . . . . God said that He could do that for me, but at this point in my life I don’t know how to keep that body . . . . thus my journey of faith with my Daddy . . . . . relying on Him to teach me what I need to know.

Of course I would like to go and get all the books and sign up for the classes and make the charts and hop online . . . . . I want to grab the reigns and control this path . . . . . . for me it’s much harder to believe, trust Him and listen carefully to what He says and obey it. Day’s like today I do that very well . . . . today is an amazing eating / exercising day . . . . I have time to listen . . . . rather, I am making time to listen. I have got to make this a DAILY THING!!!!!!!!!!

FAITH . . . . . . TRUTH . . . . . . . .LISTEN . . . . . . . FOLLOW . . . . . .

This area, that holds a bucket of fear is really God’s invitation to FAITH . . . . . gotta take Him up on His offer. So I am going to reach out for His hand and trust His heart in places I haven’t yet and see where this is going to lead my, my heart and my weight . . . . . I’m on this journey, boots on, back on my feet . . . . . can’t give up . . . . too much is at stake!!!!

Alright . . . . if you have gotten to the end of this you have heard my heart for today . . . . I would love for you to pray for me today. Pray that I will believe, trust and obey!!!!!!

Thanks!!!

Today I watched two little kids
While their Mama went to work..
At first they both was quiet
With the T.V. and a book.
But,Soon they both cried out to me
“It’s such a cold and dreary day”
(Both claim to hate December
and wish they could go OUT and play.)
Well, me being their Grandma
The idea came to my mind
To make them “WANT” to be inside
And give them some quality time.
So I sat up the old card table and
Put salt into a mixing bowl..
I knew i was right on track
When i heard voices saying “Cool!”
Once i kneaded in the flour
(added some color too)
I got the cookie cutters and
Played a hour ( more like 2).
A little flour, salt and water
Can bless a childs creative side
Making cold and dreary winter days
Great days to play inside.
By the time their mom gets home
We’ll have ornaments for their tree
And when she smells the baking clay
She’ll turn to smile at me…
For she remembers oh too well
her time with bakers clay..
and smells will take her back in time
When she stayed inside to play..

from March 2, 2009

I didn’t sleep too well last night. As I am usually a terrible sleeper, this means that last night was an even more terrible sleeper. At 3am I was watching the Knife Collector’s Show on Ion TV.

Yeah, it was about as bad as it sounds.

This guy was trying to sell, home-shopping style, a set of 13 knives. The first ten were some sort of variations of a Bowie knife. One of them was called “the Galactic Warrior” and was about a foot and a half long, with serrated edges, spikes, all kinds of unnecessary ancillary blades sprouting out from it, and looked like something a Klingon would either take into battle or shave with. The rest were all variously designed with superfluous steel, genuine wood handles from “special knife-handle species of tree” and bad balance. No matter how many times the guy tried to thrust them into the thick slabs of wood serving as displays they always fell over. Once, in a domino effect, six of them cascaded down and the guy’s first impulse was to reach out and grab them. Good thing he missed or he’d be missing a few fingers right now.

The other three knives in the set weren’t “knives” at all. One was a katana, one was a samurai sword, and one was “THE DRAGONSLAYER.” (I’m putting that in caps because he said it in caps.) THE DRAGONSLAYER was a sword with a blade about a foot thick and four feet long. The handle had some kind of mystic runes etched in it. The blade had weird kind of Harry Potter looking inscriptions. The pommel was a dragon’s head. The guard, the thing that goes above the handle and protects your hands, ended in two mini-swords that made the whole thing look like something that you’d only be proud to display in your home if you were a total and complete asshole. And if you happen to be a total and complete asshole, it comes with a display.

How much would you pay for that set? Well, if you are anything like me, and God help you if you are, you’d pay nothing for the set but you’d pay a whole lot for someone to demonstrate the Galactic Warrior on the host’s head. They guy had no idea what he was talking about. While he was waving the heavy cutlery around, he was constantly asking the producer “which blade is this?, “what are we charging for it?”, “is it on the website?”, “are we still in this knife? Or are we selling the next one?” Faintly, but clearly audible, you could hear the producer’s very tried answers. The disgust was palpable.

For anyone interested, the retail price of that set was $1,500.95, but they were letting go for the “wow!” price of $164. Even better, they’d stretch it out to two payments of only $82 apiece. The host was taken aback, stunned really, because the Galactic Warrior alone was over $500 and he hadn’t even seen a price for THE DRAGONSLAYER but it had to be well over, he really said this, $10,000. Just out of curiosity, I checked the TiVo and it said that this show was from 2005. A repeat. Of a show selling products from four years ago. And I was up past 3am watching it.

I’m sure the prices have gone up since then.

By 6am I had been in and out of bed a dozen times, mostly just walking from one room to the other, sometimes looking out the window at the snow. Pretty snow. Fluffy snow. Nice, serene, late night snow covering my car so thick it’ll take me forever to dig out, and God knows I’ll never find a spot after I pull out and so help me I’ll kill a sanitation worker if he plows me in.

But the snow looked pretty.

I was sure, positive, I’d have to start digging and go to work. I work in a school on a hill in a residential area made up of winding side streets near the ferry, so a parking spot in the snow would be harder to find than Amy Winehouse in an AA meeting.

I put on NY1 and waited to see if schools would be open. There was no big SCHOOL CLOSED graphic, no video of happy kids throwing snowballs, just a crawl that said that every single school, nursery school, romper room, college, barn, and hayloft in New Jersey was closed, as usual. I flipped to Good Day New York, which used to have the smoking hot Jodi Applegate but now has some dude and there was no big graphic there either. It did say that mass transit was running and right then and there I started to put on my socks.

But as I pulled on my socks, the crawl on the bottom of the screen started flashing.
*****ALERT*****ALERT*****NEW YORK CITY

Yes, yes!

*****PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Yes, yes!

*****ARE

What? Are what?

*****ARE

Tell me!

*****ARE

Open or closed! What are they? Open or closed?????

*****WAIT FOR IT, HEH HEH HEH

Damn you channel 5!

********************************************************

*******closed.

I pulled off my socks.

This was the first snow day in five years, they said. I remember my first snow day almost ten years ago. I had only been teaching a few weeks in a crappy intermediate school in Bay Ridge and they were forecasting the storm of the century, something like 15 inches of snow, and that was just in the first hour. I woke up that day and it looked like crap. The sky was black, not dark, black. The wind was howling. Little rain squalls were kicking up here and there. Schools just had to be closed. But the Mayor waited and waited, dickered (I like that word- sounds nasty) and dickered until 7am and closed the schools. Immediately I got a phone call from Christine, another new teacher and someone whom I was just in the process of getting close to (and that process would end soon after when, being invited to a party on her friend’s boat via email, I emailed back something along the lines of “ARGH! Shiver me timbers! It’ll be me pleasure to make you walk the plank, ye scurvy wench“) and we were so giddy over the snow day that I totally failed to make a lunch date with her. Long story short, the storm never came and the day turned out to be kind of nice and breezy.

Better than the snow day was the transit strike a few years ago. Schools were open but the kids couldn’t get there so I sat in the hallway with Michelle and played catch with other teachers. A school is a great place to work when there are no students.

As I write this it is 10am and I have spent the first hours of the snow day not sleeping. What is wrong with me?

You can probably tell from my blogs.

My older sister, Betsy, is a highly successful journalist, writer, editor and publisher. When I started my blog, I asked her for advice, and she said, “Be easy on yourself. Sometimes go for the cheap stuff, the easy stuff, the simple things that people just want to know. Not every post can be great but they can all be interesting.”

[That's probably not at all what she said, but that's what I heard!]

Good advice. People magazine sells; War and Peace sits on my top shelf collecting dust. So a simple post … Snow Day, Part II.

It started snowing about 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday night. As I walked to the podium to do my Calvin quiz at Presbytery, someone whispered into my ear, “It’s starting to snow. Hurry it up.” Of course, no one from Denver was worried about driving home in the snow, but, as I indicated, we had a lot of foreign guests. The folks from Zimbabwe were mystified AND unprepared!

And it snowed through Thursday night. Denver “officially” got about 15 inches, but our official records are taken at the airport, which is almost in Kansas – okay, that’s a slight exaggeration: its about 10 miles to our east. Most people in the suburbs of Denver measured about 3 feet; most in Denver proper saw about 2 feet; Margaret and I measured about 20 inches on a table top – before the snow actually quit but just as the wind kicked up redistributing the snow against the house and fence.

Almost everything in Denver was closed on Wednesday; non-essential things were closed for 2 days; most schools and non-profits were closed Wednesday-Friday. The airport had a good day on Wednesday – only a few flights were canceled, but Thursday was a complete mess.

“Is Denver not prepared for snow,” you ask? Yes, we can! … I mean, Yes, we are! But Colorado snow is not like YOUR snow. Our snow comes down fast and hard, and it is very light. You don’t see a lot of snow men or women in Denver! And, unfortunately, snow ball fights are futile.

Our problem is not so much the amount of snow, as it is the speed of the snow and the wind … oh, the wind! The wind is what really grounded the planes at DIA – not the amount of snow. The snow-wind combination is treacherous. You can be driving down a normal, snowy, icy street just fine and then – bam! – all of the sudden you cannot see past your windshield! I was driving to Breckenridge one day on the interstate. I was going about 60 mph on a bad road when the wind kicked up. I could not see a thing – not a thing! I thought if I slam on the brakes, I will be rear-ended, but if I keep driving I might plow into the car in front of me. It was 20 seconds of complete chaos. (I slowed and made it.) In this snow, Margaret and I shoveled our walk 4 times – thinking the snow was over, but – bam! – it came roaring back.

But the beautiful thing about Colorado? Is that the sun came out today, the streets melted, and I could have jogged in shorts today. I think it is supposed to be 60 on Saturday. I only wish I was in the car-wash biz!

Yesterday was a fun day. We received almost 2 feet of snow in and arond the Denver area, which led to pretty much everywhere declaring the day a snow day. This meant that I got to spend a good long day working in the shop instead of going to work!

During a break, the shop mascot (our English Bulldog, Bartleby) needed to take a quick trek outside. Here’s a picture of the adventure:

Today’s our second snow day. Does anyone know how to turn this snow off? If so, please report to the Denver area so the kiddos can go to school tomorrow for their Halloween parties and go trick or treating on Saturday. Thank you.

It snowed last night, six maybe eight inches up in Hill City; a dusting in Rapid. Lauren has been going to kindergarten in Hill City since August 29th, 2009. Hill City has a 5 day a week, full- time schedule so she is able to ride with me on the way to and from work. Today we show up on time for school, but it wasn’t ready for us. The report from Karen was that it was starting two hours late. So off we head for work; I noted a nonfunctional traffic light on my way out of town.

Work was fun, power was very dicey and it killed a couple of UPS’s in a very unhappy way. I got the servers up and running again just in time for Lauren and I to get a snack before we headed back to school. There is a sugar bomb of a kids drink called Tumme-Yumme (or something close) I have never allowed Lauren to have one….until today. I let her pick one out as well as a nice big freshly baked chocolate chip cookie. My thought process was that:

Today was special and I wanted her to be especially happy

She was going to school and would be able to burn off all that sugar!

So she starts buzzing as I get her coat on, we head down the stairs and are met by a coworker that lives in Hill City, she says that things look pretty dead by the school and she didn’t think they were open…we then meet another coworker that says “Hi” to Lauren and then says “oh I bet you are here because the Hill City schools are closed!”. Oh boy. So I get back to my office and check the “closed list” on the local news station web-site. Sure enough, closed. About this time, I suddenly remember the two pop tarts that Lauren had for breakfast…I am a bad Dad and I am going to pay the price by trying to keep a sugared up five year old from destroying my office ,which coincidently is also the server room! Well a long story short, she is an awesome kid. I set her up with a coloring/story book and some crayons and she went to town. The book was about Native Americans and Crazy Horse and it really spawned some great questions and conversations. Like:

Are there still Indians today? Do they sleep on beds?

Did the Indians in the old days have houses? What is a tipi?

How do you pronounce Sioux & sacred?

Do only Indian Mommy’s have Indian babies?

As the last question she asked might have led to a discussion I am not ready to have with her, I side-stepped it by offering to take her out and show her a real tipi that we have set up in the museum. On the way we passed one of my friends that happens to be a vendor there, he gave her a beautiful turtle necklace. ( I then promptly bought a second one from him because I knew little sis was going to be beyond jealous if I didn’t!) We got to the tipi and discussed the items it contained and their purpose and significance. The buffalo hide bed, the poles and the structure of the tipi…most of all though she was interested in the doll that the child mannequin was playing with.

There were many more questions and activities, how can a five year old be so smart? She is reading at the 5th grade level according to her teacher, and I believe it. But I also believe that the reading is just the tip of the iceberg…she “gets” complicated thoughts. Her questions show a depth of intellect that is profound. I am concerned that I will not have what it takes to develop it to its full potential. Most of all she is simply awesome. She laughs so much and finds humor everywhere, even when I am being a grumpy, stick in the mud she will find a way to make me smile. Exhausted, I finally put her in front of my laptop with headphones and streamed a movie through Netflix. This freed up the time I needed to answer the important emails and make some progress on projects that needed my undivided attention.

With Lauren already with me, I took the opportunity to take the long way home through Custer State Park. Oh the deep wet snow was beautiful, but the trees paid the price. The mighty oak seemed to take the brunt of damage. We saw several that had lost branches or were wholly toppled. We also came upon the picturesque scene of a whitetail buck standing and drinking within a stream. Bright white snow, in sharp contrast to the red and yellow leaves. framed the shimmering water and the pure life energy that the buck seemed to channel. I wish I could have somehow captured the moment, the emotion, with a camera, though even under perfect conditions it would be impossible. I was happy to be able to share the viewing with Lauren, though to her it was just another deer.

After that it was on to Hermosa and then up to Rapid to pick up her sister. Kendra was absolutely delighted with her necklace…she is a girl that loves jewelery.

Thus ended my first snow day with Lauren.

Fun Unleashed is awesome. As I write this, the kids are playing and I’m getting time alone – a perfect combination. For $5 kids can play all day and as usual there is no admission for adults. Food and drinks aren’t too badly priced either.

A couple of Fun Unleashed Updates:

After school care is avaliable with transportation from school. It’s limited to 18 kids too which is nice.

They now provide all day care on SCASD In Service days. 24 hour advance notice is required and the cost is $30 a day. Drop off time is anytime after 8:30am. Pick Up time any time before 5:30pm . Contact them for info at 814-238-8780.

Care is also provided for snow days! No advance reservations needed. AWESOME offering for working parents at the mercy of the school district!!!!!!!

They also provide parents night off every Friday and Saturday where you can drop your darlings off for $20.

I’ve never witnessed any of these events, but I heard on the grapevine that the owner is a certified teacher. I don’t have any info on the safety in place, but I’ve called and will update when I know.
