I think Snow Patrol is one of those bands you’re not supposed to like. Or rather, you’re not supposed to admit it in serious muso company.

I like Snow Patrol.

I like especially their album Eyes Open and also the song Run from Final Straw. (Ranny if you’re reading this I’m sure you’ll second that.)

Last night they played for nearly three hours at the Albert Hall. I was there with my brother-in-law Dave. The band had clearly been planning it for weeks, maybe even years, and were made up to be realising a dream.

The first half was a quiet, slowed-down, semi-acoustic set; the second half loud, with the full band. A bit like Dylan’s circa 1966 gigs, without the booing. The only problem was, there’s not a lot going on in a Snow Patrol song and, if you slow it down too much, it almost sounds like it was grinding to a halt.

The setting was great. The band fantastic. They’d borrowed Elbow’s string section and did a very good cover of One Day Like This.

Gary Lightbody is a good frontman, funny and engaging. He talked a lot and had the audience in his pocket from the moment he started giving out free hugs.

One other thing. Apparently Snow Patrol is the last band ever to appear on Top of the Pops.

I have always intrigued by Gary Lightbody’s voice, gentle yet at his emotion’s height. This so called much loved songs compilation is released in conjunction of greatest hits albums flooding in the X’mas gift market. If two CDs of Snow Patrol’s signature love songs are not enough to get your girlfriend’s heart melt, grab the Deluxe package of this album which is including a DVD of ‘The Lightning Strike’ animated film and previously unseen live footage.

This greatest hits album is well documented with all their hits from the last 6 years since ‘Final Straw’ was a success in UK. Then following their breakthrough in U.S. with ‘Chasing Cars’ featured in Grey’s Anatomy.Check out their new single – Just Say Yes and two other new songs. At last, you probably should know that they have been around since 1994 with 5 studio albums. All these cover versions, rarities, album tracks and a handful of new songs are well worth your money and thoughts for giving yourself a X’mas gift or even to your love ones.

On stage, their glorious hard-wired gene pool of anthemic indie and stadium techno comes into its own, driving along like a perfectly pitched DJ set, and where other bands might pause to sip their riders between songs Delphic slip into hypnotic driving techno interludes, turning “gigs” on their heads and opening fans all-seeing rave-eyes to the benefits of the breakdown.

I love a band that knows how to put on a live performance, and that seems to be exactly what Delphic does (not to mention make killer music). Delphic sounds almost like Snow Patrol, with an electro beat, and much much better music. I’m not sure I can do just to the Delphic by my words, so you’re just going to have to listen. The trio’s debut album is scheduled to be out in January, and is proving to be nothing short of amazing.

Even if You can not hear my voice, I be right beside you, dear!

It seems that during the last couple of decades Hollywood and its writers have been focused on the e

It seems that during the last couple of decades Hollywood and its writers have been focused on the easy way out when it comes to creativity. There are few directors and writers who have not sold out to the remake. But the remakes are a sure thing, right? They make money! And people, especially Baby Boomers and Gen X, pay to see them. There are too many to list but here is a list of what has been done.

Remade Movie List: http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/series/Remake.php

I for one usually don’t rush out and see a remake. I want something original, creative, and thought-provoking. The trouble is, after reviewing some of the list above, it’s hard to know what’s an original story line and what’s a remake. I imagine that some of the mellennials think that “King Kong” and “The Day The Earth Stood Still” were original movies. I don’t fault them because I am sure I have and will make the same mistake.

Although, here is a help…It is a list of what will be released and what remake films are in production:

55 Movie Remakes Currently in the works by Den of Geek.

Film is not the only media that is struggling. Recently, a couple of my favorite bands launched “Best of” albums. The Foo Fighters and Snow Patrol. Yes, there are a couple of new songs on the albums but still, why get lazy after 5 or 6 albums previously released? Consequence of Sound by Alex Young covers Snow Patrol’s pieced together greatest hits album. Now I can understand a best of if you have produced at least 10 albums, sure. But let’s dig deep Gen X and let’s be creative!

And as I write this post on remakes I have to admit, I too am guilty of not digging deep and pulling something truly creative out of my heart. We, in fact are all guilty of this as artists to at least a minimal degree, for Michelangelo said it best…

“The true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection.”

Last week, the British annual charity event BBC Children in Need kicked off with an all-star line-up of rock and pop’s finest, to take part in Children in Need Rocks at the Royal Albert Hall, organized by none other than Gary Barlow of Take That.

I was so lucky I got to hear all about this fab concert from friends’ emails, Facebook status updates and Twitter feeds. Ch’invite peeps!

Anyway, thanks to You Tube, I was able to see. . . not all, but a lot . . . of it.

One of the performances I loved was the Snow Patrol/Cheryl Cole duet.

Goosebumps!

Have a listen. It’s fab.

I find the map and draw a straight line
Over rivers, farms, and state lines
The distance from ‘A’ to where you’d be
It’s only finger-lengths that I see
I touch the place where I’d find your face
My finger in creases of distant dark places

I hang my coat up in the first bar
There is no peace that I’ve found so far
The laughter penetrates my silence
As drunken men find flaws in science

Their words mostly noises
Ghosts with just voices
Your words in my memory
Are like music to me

I’m miles from where you are,
I lay down on the cold ground
I, I pray that something picks me up
And sets me down in your warm arms

After I have travelled so far
We’d set the fire to the third bar
We’d share each other like an island
Until exhausted, close our eyelids
And dreaming, pick up from
The last place we left off
Your soft skin is weeping
A joy you can’t keep in

I’m miles from where you are,
I lay down on the cold ground
And I, I pray that something picks me up
and sets me down in your warm arms

I’m miles from where you are,
I lay down on the cold ground
and I, I pray that something picks me up
and sets me down in your warm arms

Joy in the Week of November 16

(Still can’t get back to the weekly post… will keep trying though!)

1. December magazines – I subscribe to lots of magazines, and I love getting the fat, juicy December issues. They are packed with inspiration for presents, entertaining, and food. Some of the best so far La Cucina Italiana, Canadian Living, Canadian House & Home, and LouLou.

2. Battle Studies by John Mayer – The latest from Mayer returns to some of his older form – less blues, more melodic songwriting. A good CD for relaxing or having on at work.

Battle Studies - new CD from John Mayer

3. Waking Up by One Republic – For the most part, this is a good CD with dreamy Coldplay-esque songs. I think they’ve realized that the public likes this type of song from them versus the hard driving stuff.

4. The Venus Fixers by Illaria Dagnini Brey – After reading its review in The Toronto Star, I picked up this novel about Allied officers who were responsible for sensitizing the troops to the cultural monuments in Italy. These men were responsible for identifying these monuments for bombing avoidance, training advancing ground troops to respect the monuments and artifacts, and rallying communities to repair any damage. Fascinating read! A good companion documentary is “The Rape of Europa”, which was aired again on TVO this week (trailer is on YouTube) – the missing artwork, the monuments devastation caused by the war across Europe is brought vividly to life in this documentary.

5. Try Sleeping with A Broken Heart by Alicia Keys – After her dreadful first single release, this new one is much much better. There was a less than enthusiastic performance of it on “Dancing With The Stars” this past week (I was flipping channels only and chanced upon it – really!), but the actual download is good.

6. Starbucks’ Christmas Blend – Hurray, it’s back! For the last 3 years, I’ve been hooked on this coffee blend. I stock up on the Decaf variety, which takes me to about March.

7. Top Chef Las Vegas on the Food Network – This Vegas version is the 5th or 6th in the Top Chef series – think of it as the American Idol of food. I look forward to seeing how these chefs will approach the various tests, and the judges’ comments. I get an education when I watch and now think of “balanced flavours” whenever I taste my own food or eat out.

8. Joseph Gordon-Levitt recreating “Make ‘Em Laugh” on SNL – The infamous Donald O’Connor number from “Singing in the Rain” was redone by Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the opening monologe of “Saturday Night Live” on the 22nd. Why he thought to do this? Maybe his party trick is flipping off walls? A really strong effort and very funny! Kudos to you! You can see if for a limited time likely here. The whole show was pretty funny and there are extra sketches showing at the link – check out the “Say Anything” spoof.

9. H1N1 Clinic Staff – I headed to my local regional centre for the H1N1 innoculation, and I was very impressed with the organization. It reminded me of the usual efficient organization of an election. But every person I encountered, from the police directing car traffic to the staff inside directing human traffic to the nurse who stuck me was smiling, helpful and personable. Well done!

Summer Sausage at St. Jacobs Market; photo by Stephanie Fysh on Flickr

10. Smoked summer sausage from St. Jacobs – I haven’t indulged in this homemade specialty of the Mennonite community in some time. But got some this weekend at the so-much-fun St. Jacobs Farmers Market ( Thursdays & Saturdays), and oh my…

11. Just Say Yes , Snow Patrol’s latest single – You can count on this group for intensely romantic songs. Hear it here.

...Or Not!

1. Raptors losing on the road all the time… and at home. And games with no defense!

2. Unfortunately Sting’s Christmas offering, If On A Winter’s Night, is not good. Each song has received the same medieval-throwback-style of accompaniment, that turns from interesting novelty to boredom really quickly. And I really love Sting! A big disappointment!

Internetowa maszyna ruszyła, a ledwie rozpoznawalny poza Wyspami Brytyjskimi zespół skończył z nominacją do Grammy Awards.

Snow Patrol Up to Now Fiction/Interscope 2009 Let’s get it out of the way – Snow Patrol

Snow Patrol
Up to Now
Fiction/Interscope
2009

Let’s get it out of the way – Snow Patrol says Up to Now isn’t a greatest hits album, but it is.

This means it should probably include 10 songs and then the normal one or two unreleased songs to make fans and the record company happy, bringing the total to 12.

Instead, Snow Patrol gives us 30 tracks. By the time you get to the second disc, I’d be surprised if you weren’t on the verge of falling asleep. And that just doesn’t seem right, because Snow Patrol is a very good band. There’s a good chance “Chocolate,” “Chasing Cars,” “Set the Fire to the Third Bar,” “You’re All I Have,” or “Run” has been struck in your head at some point or another. So why add filler to a greatest hits collection?

The fifth song here, “Crazy in Love” (yes, a Beyonce cover), isn’t just bad, it’s completely out of place. Just like the traffic person on your local TV station’s morning show (the weather guy can’t handle that, really?). Previously unreleased and first single “Just Say Yes,” on the other hand, fits in well with the rest of the band’s 15-year career. Which is to say it’s basically a much more boring Coldplay X&Y-era song. You guessed it, a floating in outer space atmosphere with melodramatic lyrics.

Two songs by “Scottish indie rock supergroup” (led by Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody) are included. By the way, not my description. Yawn. So are a couple more new songs. Yawn. “Signal Fire,” from the awful Spider-Man 3, is here, too. And then two live recordings of “Run” and “Chasing Cars” show up to close each disc, even though the two studio versions of the songs are already on the compilation. Ugh. “Post Punk Progression,” a b-side… well, you get the idea. It’s in there somewhere.

This is the most overstuffed greatest hits collection in recent memory. Overall, 20 of the 30 songs are taken from Snow Patrol’s five studio albums. At least five of those could have been left out, leaving 15 tracks, plus maybe some bonus stuff for fans if they buy Up to Now on iTunes. In a perfect world, right?

I recommend 2003’s Final Straw or 2006’s Eyes Open (skip 2008’s A Hundred Million Suns). Actually, besides a few songs, it’s a better idea to listen to Coldplay. Or even Travis.

4/10

Try to figure out how many of the bigger alt-rock bands that emerged this past decade will one day crank out a half-decent greatest-hits album. It’s a short list.

Fortunately, Irish super-Indie Snow Patrol makes that list, at least according to my biased opinion.

Snow Patrol found a wide audience as a kind of Coldplay minus the world-conquering aspiration. The Irish lite rockers’ glistening atmospherics and genteel grandiosity made sweeping melancholy feel fragile and private. This two-CD best-of draws mostly from the three albums they’ve made since 2004, when singer-guitarist Gary Lightbody jettisoned his low-fi Belle and Sebastian side on the austerely gushing Final Straw.

Some will say that a 30-song “best of” CD might be a little bit too much.

Perhaps yes, perhaps no. Perhaps the band shouldn’t have called it a greatest hits complilation, because certainly, the band threw every thing at the wall: singles, sure, but also B-sides and unreleased tracks and covers and side-project joints and live tracks.

I ain’t complaining. It’s food on the plate.

#89: Snow Patrol/Final Straw (2004) — I’ve never seen Snow Patrol live, but if there was

#89: Snow Patrol/Final Straw (2004) — I’ve never seen Snow Patrol live, but if there was ever an album that seemed fit for both clubs and arenas in would be Final Straw. This isn’t even a ‘happy,’ record either. But the examination of self and relationships through the lyricism is phenomenal against it’s companion soundtrack. Check out: ‘How to Be Dead,’ ‘Chocolate,’ and ‘Run.’

#88: Local H/Whatever Happened to PJ Soles? (2004) — Local H are like a gust from the Windy City. No two-man rocks as hard as this duo – unless you count anything Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin did between 2001-2007. This album is probably the nadir of their career, deftly spinning their brand of straight up guitar rock with a rare pop sensibility. Check out choice cuts ‘California Songs,’ ‘Heaven on the Way Down,’ and ‘Halycon Days.’

#87: Wednesday 13/Transylvania 90210 (2005) — Two things that go together like peanut butter and jelly are punk music and horror (see The Misfits, The Horrors, The Cramps). I discovered these guys through Slipknot –> Murderdolls –> Wednesday 13. This started out being my fun, guilty pleasu…re record of ‘05. But four years later and I’m still giggling. Check out ‘I Walked With A Zombie,’ the title track and ‘Buried by Christmas.’ — featuring the great lyric: ‘All I want for Christmas is a custom-fit casket, with black velvet interior…oh yeah, and a bucket of chicken…’

#86: Placebo/Battle for the Sun (2009) — this is, hands down, my favorite band of the decade. Entering at #86, this year’s album sees the departure of drummer Steve Hewitt. Continuing in the polished vein of 2006’s MEDS album, it would seem the band has found it’s niche in alterna-rock culture. More songs for boys like me with hearts on their sleeves. Check out: ‘Bright Lights,’ ‘Happy You’re Gone,’ and ‘Kings of Medicine.’

#85: Sponge/The Man (2005) — These guys have been rockin’ hard for over a decade and a half. Their post-grunge, Detroit sound can be simplifed — it’s just damn good rock n roll. 05’s The Man was/is their hardest rocking album to date, takes no prisoners, and makes you wanna bang your head with an uncanny sensibility for hooks. Check out: ‘The Man,’ ‘Feels Like Love,’ and ‘Shittier Day Than Me.’

#84: Longwave/Secrets are Sinister (2008) — I remember seeing these guys at Valentine’s (1st Floor) with about 10-15 other people back in support of their 2003 debut and thinking, ‘these guys are gonna be big!’ Well, the band has taken the road less travelled and have kind of missed the mainstream success I initially expected. Has stopped them from putting out albums, though. I think this is the best, most cohesive album of the three in five years. Perhaps it was usage of producer Peter Katis (Interpol) or just stronger songwriting. Imagine Radiohead met the Strokes and you get the picture without the squonks. Check out: ‘No Direction,’ ‘Satellites,’ and ‘I Don’t Dare.’

#83: Ryan Adams/RocknRoll (2003) — the second entry for Ryan on my countdown. Yes he’s prolific, and yes one could fairly compare him to Neil Young. This album was exactly what it embodied – Rock N Roll. I remember this ablum from a number of road trips and it’s a great driving record. Perfect…parts throwback, perfect parts garage rock. Check out (though buying the album is well worth it): ‘So Alive,’ ‘Note to Self: Don’t Die,’ and ‘1974.’

#82: Alice in Chains/Black Gives Way to Blue (2009): sure, there have been bands who have been more prolific in the past 10 years, but who freakin’ cares? No disrespect to Staley, but as a cohesive, fantastic sounding album from track-to-track, this AIC release takes the cake! Some of Cantrell’s best writing. Check out: (one of the best tracks this year) ‘Check My Brain,’ ‘Your Decision,’ and ‘Private Hell.’

#81: Queens of the Stone Age/Era Vulgaris (2007) — After a disappointing 2005 release, I’d wondered if the loss of Nick Oliveri would do the Queens in. But Josh Homme was in one of the greatest stoner bands of all time! This is a trippy album that took me time to get into and it came at the end of 2007 when I realized how damn good (and diverse) the album was. Check out: ‘Misfit Love,’ ‘Sick, Sick, Sick’ and ‘Make It Witchu.’

#80: Pearl Jam/Backspacer (2009) — fourth studio album of the decade, but first in 13 years with Brendan O’Brien. This is the PJ I know and love. The band with a mission on it’s record to rock fast with abandon while at the same time writing songs with a sensibility to them. The other three albums over the past 10 years lacked a consistent theme. To some that was considered cool. Sometimes I like straight lines in my album rock. Check out: ‘The Fixer,’ ‘Unthought Known,’ and ‘Just Breathe.’

Listening to Snow Patrol’s greatest hits collection ‘Up To Now’ makes me question

Listening to Snow Patrol’s greatest hits collection ‘Up To Now’ makes me question the purpose of this compilation. We all have access to itunes, so we can all compile our own Snow Patrol greatest hits at the touch of a button by downloading the songs we like. Of course there is an appeal of having a single cd that contains a band’s finest moments but this certainly isn’t it.

‘Up To Now’ does exactly what a greatest hits should not do; its is a sprawling mess of an album, containing 30 tracks, terribly sequenced in no logical order and containing not only Snow Patrol’s hits but also b’sides, cover versions, new tracks and even side projects – ‘Run’ and ‘Chasing Cars’ are even on here twice! Greatest hits should serve up the very best the band has to offer, which means what you leave off is just as important as what you have on and Snow Patrol could obviously not decide because there is way too much to digest here.

The quality varies greatly over 30 tracks but in fairness we do get a very comprehensive view of the band’s output to date. ‘Run’ is still as great as it ever was, one of the best anthems of the decade but ‘Chasing Cars’ was never as good and I wouldn’t mind if I never heard it again. Their earliest material was promising and showed the direction in which the band would go but it was with Final Straw they found their wings and the singles from that album are the best things on here.

‘Eyes Open’ was a mixture of dire sing alongs and some pretty, understated ballads; we get a taste of both here. ‘All I Have’ sounds great, ‘Hands Open’ not so great. Their most recent album had no such highs or lows and is probably better best forgotten. The new songs may suggest the band will be heading down new roads for their next album which would be very welcome as there is very little diversity on this greatest hits – most of the songs are slow or slower, dull or duller.

Snow Patrol’s albums have always been patchy at best and I would like to say that this is a decent collection of their finest moments. But it isn’t. For every classic there is one rotten apple and a long-lost b side or new song you really couldn’t care less about. As such this is not really for the longterm fan or the new arrival, in fact I’m not really sure who it is aimed at. A missed opportunity.

right, today, have been a hard and emotional day for me on several occasions. which im not going to go in to on here, as it is private to myself, and i moan endlessly about others posting about there lives on the internet, some things, you have to keep private i guess.

anyway, apart from my rubbish day, that consisted of lessons of photography, which i usually enjoy. the fact that im listening to snow patrol is probably not helping my emotion. so il put something abit heavier on i guess.

first of all, i have set up a new twitter, which is: www.twitter.com/MasonMcEnery or @MasonMcEnery

which ever way you prefer it, please follow me on there.

i started reading in to orwells, 1984. which i was also watching ‘im a celeb’, whilst reading it. and honestly, they seemed to highly contrast there selves to each other, and i was drawn in to watching TV in the end. distraction is a down point of me.

i have no plans for the weekend, which doesn’t involve coursework or homework, as i said in an earlier post. so my weekend will be full of joy and excitement.

thats me off the internet for the night, guitar or xbox? its a tough choice, but as everyone else in my house is asleep, i am afraid i am drawn upon the latter. thanks for reading this, laters xxx

Cheryl Cole teamed up with snow patrol yesterday for (bbc children in needs charity show) and absolutely rocked it! When i first heard about this collaboration i had my doubts obviously because Cheryl Cole and snow patrol are so different as artists, i wasn’t sure if that would work. Well i was wrong, the collaboration was amazing and i loved the song. It’s official that Cheryl is the new British queen of Pop since she’s been in the spotlight everyday for the past couple of years, Posh is yesterdays news as Cheryl has been talking to the “Man” Jay z for her big break in the US. The fact that she followed her own side projects apart from her band ” Girls Aloud” made her into a superstar (also the fact that she married Ashley Cole…not bad . Below Cheryl is pictured with Sir Paul, and Snow patrol. What a nice picture!!!ahh….snif
