This girl is ready for battle, although no armor. The sketch came about while I was in between projects and then thinking about movies such as ‘The Hunger Games‘ and ‘Snow White and the Huntsmen‘. It reminds me too of the reading from Ephesians last week. The rest of the armor will be sketched in eventually!

‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ is the only Snow White themed film you need to see in 2012 by the looks of the new trailer.

In the trailer we get to further explore the battle worn fairy-tale world with all kinds of different creatures and the first appearance of the dwarfs in action.

The visuals are stunning thanks to the work of director Rupert Sanders and it looks like he has nailed the slight re-working of the fairy-tale material.

Kristen Stewart even looks tolerable in the film.

Hit the jump to check out the new trailer.

Synopsis:

“In the epic action-adventure Snow White and the Huntsman, Kristen Stewart plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen (Charlize Theron) who is out to destroy her. But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the young woman threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) who was dispatched to kill her. Sam Claflin joins the cast as the prince long enchanted by Snow White’s beauty and power. The breathtaking new vision of the legendary tale is from Joe Roth, the producer of Alice in Wonderland, producer Sam Mercer and acclaimed commercial director and state-of-the-art visualist Rupert Sanders.”

‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ is released 1 June 2012 in the US and 21 June 2012 in Australia.

When we first heard about ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ we were praying someone would give us a poison apple but it’s slowly winning us over.
A new trailer is set to drop next week but in the meantime three very good behind the scenes featurettes have been released.

‘Setting the stage’ looks at the work of director Rupert Sanders and how he’s planning to smash away the other Snow White competition “Mirror Mirror’.

Snow White and the Huntsman (June 1, 2012)

A morose Kristen Stewart picks up a steel sword and battles an evil queen while an odd posing huntsman attempts to woo her via strategic hunting techniques.

I don’t know much about this film but the cast intrigues me. Any movie that can gather Stewart, Hemsworth, Theron, Nick Frost, Ray Winstone, Toby Jones, Ian McShane and Eddie Marsan must have something going for it. We are at least guaranteed good acting in a bad movie.

This movie is the “huh?” film of 2012. Who pitched this? Who thought Stewart could be a believable action star? Why did Hemsworth trade a hammer for an axe? Will the apple be red or green?

Why you should see this: Strange casting and the wonderment of whether or not Stewart can pick up a steel sword is worth the watch. Also, Hemsworth and Theron make anything watchable. This is big budget film that will look great and potentially be a fun Medieval popcorn flick. An added bonus is that it will be dueling with the cheeky Snow White movie Mirror Mirror.

One of the most anticipated films of 2012 is ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ yet we left it off our most anticipated list due to the Kristen ‘mumbles’ Stewart factor.

Frankly, were more interested in seeing which of the Snow White themed films comes out on top with the horrible looking ‘Mirror Mirror’ also set for release this year.

Today ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ got serious cred with the release of a new photo featuring the huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) in the company of eight dwarfs.

The band of vertically challenged warriors includes Nick Frost, Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan, and Ian McShane. Very clever casting by director Rupert Sanders’, see if you can spot them in the photo below.

Best Films of 2011 (TV too)

- Barika Edwards

This year it seemed like we were perpetually watching a sequel, remake or even seeing the same movie twice with just a new cast (i.e Friends with Benefits Vs. No Strings Attached - dissing films about open relationships while dissing romcom and yet falling into its traps; Melancholia Vs. Another Earth - planetary collisions). Towards the end of the year, Hollywood seems to homage itself – The Artists, My Week with Marilyn and Hugo.

When I look at my lists there were some real daredevils in film in 2011 who took risks even if it meant rewinding history to acid-trippy dinosaurs and lava lamps, to daring dual performances that hopefully will not stay under the radar during the awards season.

10. The Artist

The Artist is a silent film that is not quite quiet. I almost missed this one because I was hesitant to watch a silent film, but I am glad I did. It is a special treat to watch the fall of silent movie star who does not want to conform to the new movement in film towards talkies. While one falls another rises, a dance girl becomes the face of talkie films. Go see The Artist it is a treasure.

9. My Week with Marilyn

Michelle Williams plays the doe-eyed Marilyn Monroe who is completely dedicated to the progress of her acting method. Monroe clashes with Laurence Olivier, played by Brittan’s modern Olivier like actor – Kenneth Branagh (who also directed Thor) but in the end Monroe influences Olivier to drop his artificial poise to perform the best role of his lifetime in John Osborne’s play The Entertainer. Wonderful breakout performance by Eddie Redmayne who plays Collin Clark, who narrates his book about his week working on a film in England and falling in love with Marilyn Monroe. If you love history and are an actor you will appreciate this film.

8. Contagion

Contagion came out in the fall of 2011 with a stunner cast of top notch celebrities. Matt Damon plays a Minnesotan father who loses his wife, the first patient to die and step-son. His wife after returning from China has transmitted the mysterious “swine flu-esque” like disease around the Midwest and anyone she came into contact with infecting others around the world. While the world tries to come to grips with this spreading epidemic, preventing mass chaos while still trying to get ahead of the disease scientifically. Laurence Fishbourne plays a CDC director who works with the scientists and investigators trying to get control of a spiralling epidemic but now one is spared indiscriminately by its path.
Steven Soderberg’s direction gives a more realistic end of the world possibility than Day After Tomorrow. The truth, world-wide bureaucracy and corruption with the timely release of public information stall advancements and prevent people from knowing the truth. It takes a challenging blogger, played by Jude Law, to spill much needed information to the masses.

7. Tree of Life

Terrance Malick’s visual masterpiece about life, love, and faith from the dawn of earth to the metaphysical afterlife. Tree of Life was a smart and daring film of the year 2011, if anything it ws the most inspired film of the year. Read my full review http://artsyfartsyblog.wordpress.com/2011/06/07/life-and-death-the-symphony-through-art/

6. Hugo

Martin Scorsese’s Hugo also homages to the decadency of film making and the magic creativity like The Artist and My Week with Marilyn. Hugo in 3D is actually worth seeing as many of the films this year are completely grumble worthy for their sad attempts to cash in at the box office. Hugo is about a little orphan boy who lives in a Parisian train station maintaining the clocks while trying to fix and solve the puzzle of his animatron, Hugo. Hugo also has a wonderful artistic message that is not far off from The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. I highly recommend this film for artists who loved the film history presented in The Artists and the artistic integrity told in My Week With Marilyn, Hugo has it all wrapped in one film.

5. Carnage

Carnage is was wonderful adaptation of Yasmina Reza’s play, God of Carnage, which is now a theatre classic performing in regional and international theatres today.. The direction was excellent which didn’t detract from the wonderful script and the sense of theatrical drama. A lot of play to screen film adaptations do not transition as well, and the intimacy of the stage is lost, but Polanski did it brilliantly. I loved the portrait of marriage, parenting and repressed honesty. Carnage is a humorous slow burn of hospitality and hostility.
4. 50/50

An actor to watch out for is Joseph Gordon-Levitt he brings layered characterization to his roles that surprise you with their complete mirror of the human condition. 50/50’s cast including Seth Rogan, Angelica Houston and Anna Kendrick, director, Jonathan Levine; and writer, Will Reiser do just that in a witty and endearing story about a young radio producer who finds out he has cancer. The film gives an interesting perspective on the highs and lows when dealing with mortality. Its one of the films this year that kept me thinking about the film long after the lights and the theatre rose.

50/50 – Best in Film 2011

3. The Help

Occupy Wall Street calls for better wages and employee dignity and promises of CHANGE since 2008. But After watching The Help I said to myself. “Wow, nothing really has changed.” The Help’s film adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s book The Help has a powerhouse female cast including break out performances by Octavia Spencer and a Lindsay Lohen looking/sounding actress, Emma Stone. Black Mississippi maids assist a new college graduate on her book by telling the truth about how they feel working a maids for white families.

2. Attack the Block

One of the funniest yet provocative films of the year. Its like Goonies in the ghetto.
When aliens land around the housing estates in inner-city London, 6 boys who have experienced hard knocks of life but are still kids at heart. These boys have consequences to their delinquent behavior. As more aliens come down to attack their project apartment building - its the inner city vs the outer limits.

Attack the Block came out during the summer around the time Super 8 another aliens attacking kids film, yet its been done before. Attack the Block presents the issues of class and race and how assumptions and survival are made.

Attack the Block – Best in Film 2012

1. The Devil’s Double

Chilling, Sadistic, Insane. The Devil’s Double kept me on the edge of my seat and my head shaking with complete appall of the actions of Uday Hussein told from the perspective of his body double, Latif Yahia, both played seamlessly (although his British accent did come through at time) by Dominic Cooper.
The lives of these two men are fascinating. Latif is spotted by Uday who plucks him away from his life and forces him to become his body double. While the child-like to-have-been future dictator is awful, you can see a glimpse of reasoning behind his insanity and need for closeness to his father. Uday is someone you are completely on edge for the fear of his changing mood and your life. Cooper’s performance as both men is phenomenal and I hope it will garner some award nominations. If you liked Last King of Scottland, you must see this under-the-radar film.

The Devil’s Double – Transformation

Honorable Mentioned: Shame (would have liked to have seen it but unfortunately did not get any press invites. I have liked Steve McQueen’s films in the past and expect no less of raw and ugly side of human dignity). The Beginners, Thor, Harry Potter: The Deathly Hallows Part 2 and Melancholia.

Films to look foward to in 2012:

The Hobbit

With all the drama about union contracts and rights. Peter Jackson continues to film the two installations of J.R Toilken’s The Hobbit. The official trailer was released in mid-December 2011 but will not be released till Dec. 2012.

Snow White and the Huntsman

Again like 2011, two versions of the same concept or story are released. I am looking farward to see visual mastermind, Tarsem’s take on “Snow White”. The Artsy Fartsy Show sat down with one of the designers working with Tarsem on this film and Immortals. http://www.archive.org/details/RafaelKayananOnWorkingArtisticallyOnTheFilmImmortals

Best in TV

I have to give this to The Misfits on E4. This ingenious television show about juvenile delinquents who are struck by lightning during a strange storm and survive with powers. The five juvenile delinquents do not change their mentality even though they have powers which makes this smart show very funny and unlike any show on tv today. Honorable mention: Being Human on BBC which might have possibly reached its demise as actors Aidan Turner films the Hobbit and Russell Tovey leaves the program.

The Avengers

The Hunger Games

I love Jennifer Lawrence and I’m a fan of the books, so this is a go-see for me. Starring Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, and Josh Hutcherson.

John Carter

I LOVE Taylor Kitsch, and I was lucky enough to visit the set of this movie while it was in production a couple years ago, therefore I’m super psyched. Starring Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, and Mark Strong.

Prometheus

Basically a prequel to the Alien movies…still it looks like it’s worth a viewing. Starring, Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, and Guy Pearce.

Snow White & The Huntsmen

One of two Snow White movies coming out in 2012, however I prefer to see this grittier version starring Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, and Chris Hemsworth.

The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight was an instant favorite of mine, and this sequel includes two of my favorite characters, Bane and Catwoman. Starring Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Marion Cotillard, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Breaking Dawn: Part II

Skyfall

The upcoming Jamesd Bond film starring Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, and Berenice Marlohe (the new Bond girl).

The Bourne Legacy

I like Matt Damon more, but I’m still down with the whole amnesiac assassin thing. Starring Jeremy Renner.

Battleship

This movie actually doesn’t interest me at all and quit frankly looks pretty lame, and Rihanna acting? Come on. The only reason this movie made my list is because it starrs both Taylor Kitsch abd Alexander Skarsgard. So automatically, I’m down just for the eye candy. Also starring Liam Neeson and Brooklyn Decker.

Savages

Based on the book about drug dealers in Laguna Beach and their girlfriend getting kidnapped. Starring Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, and Emile Hirsch.

American Reunion

Loved the original trilogy, and super down for the final movie starring the original cast. Starring Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Alyson Hannigan, and the rest of the gang.

The Great Gatsby

I loved the book and I love the cast, which I believe was perfectly chosen. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Carey Mulligan.

Seeing as we now know the release date for JJ Abrams’ Star Trek 2 is May 17, 2013 that’s too far in

Seeing as we now know the release date for JJ Abrams’ Star Trek 2 is May 17, 2013 that’s too far in the future for any real box office speculation as many movies are going to be juggling release dates till the last moment. However, I’ll do a quick box office analysis in a later post but for something a bit closer let’s take a gander at the summer 2012 blockbuster season (all USA/Canada release dates) which has a lot of tentpole franchises but only one real title that has a shot at obliterating the rest of the field.

For those who know me they’ll know that I previously did a ton of these box office analysis way back starting in high school and though I have personally done them ever since I haven’t really had the time to put pen to paper, or in this case, type out a blog entry until now. I don’t claim to be a box office guru as I readily admit that I don’t always get it right. In fact one of the biggest blunders I ever made was predicting that The Rocketeer would be the number two biggest summer movie way back in 1991 and ended up with egg on my face as it finished the year at a dismal #27. However, I just do these for fun and come September 2012 I’ll come back to this post to see how well I fared.

May 4: The Avengers

The summer movie season once again kicks off with a superhero movie and it is again telling that there are exactly zero major movies scheduled to open against it as to do so would be a gigantic strategic mistake.

No, this is not the title that I am alluding to when I say “obliterating the rest of the field” although many comic book fans will disagree with me. To argue that it won’t be a hit is just plain silly as this is THE Marvel film comic book fanboys have been waiting for with baited breath. Throw in the fact that it is being directed by perhaps the biggest fanboy-loved director in history, Buffy creator Joss Whedon, and there’s no doubt this film is going to be huge. How huge? Well, maybe not as huge as people think.

This is essentially Iron Man 3 for the moment as it has the exact same opening weekend as both previous films so looking at history we’re looking at around a $100-130 million opening with upwards to $300-320 million domestic gross as the ballpark range. This is because Thor, Captain America and The Incredible Hulk all on their own don’t come close to Iron Man’s box office take and those fans who are expecting the impossible by hoping that The Avengers pulls in a combined gross from all those franchises are dreaming in la-la land as the core audience is essentially the same for all those Marvel franchises. If the movie gets a rottentomatoes rating like the first Iron Man then all signs point to a higher final gross around the mid to high-300s. A blockbuster for sure but it’s going to settle for number 2 by the end of the summer.

Watch the Avengers movie trailer here.

May 11: Dark Shadows, The Dictator, What to Expect When You’re Expecting

Those comic book fans that are expecting The Avengers to once again take number one this weekend might be in for a shock as the norm for superhero movies is around a 50%+ drop in the second week. Assuming The Avengers does $100 million in the first weekend the deceleration puts it squarely against the biggest box office actor at the moment who is teamed with his most important collaborator as Johnny Depp joins Tim Burton in Dark Shadows. Not all Depp movies open big but to bet against him and Tim Burton in a summer movie is not so wise. If this performs like the last Depp/Burton movie, Alice in Wonderland, we’d expect an opening weekend of over $100 million which would mean there is no chance that The Avengers comes close to first spot.

The other two pretenders this weekend include Sacha Baron Cohen’s newest movie The Dictator and finally some counter-programming towards the female demographic with the release of What to Expect When You’re Expecting staring Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Lopez. With males flocking to The Avengers and Dark Shadows expect the casualty this weekend to be The Dictator as Cohen’s film gears much more towards the male demographic.

May 18: Battleship

Now here’s the first example where I will predict a turkey as Hollywood decides to release Battleship, a movie based on the Battleship board game we all played as a kid. Throw in aliens and I’m sure we’ll get some gnarly special effects but this looks like a giant mess although I could always be proven wrong considering the director is Peter Berg who has previously impressed with The Kingdom and Friday Night Lights. However, he also stunk up the room with the risible Hancock. Throw in Rihanna’s feature film debut and comedian Tom Arnold and this will be the first bomb of the summer. The question is can it still come first this weekend? If Dark Shadows gets good reviews the week before the answer is no.

May 25: Men in Black 3

The easy answer here is that Men in Black 3 will rule Memorial Day weekend and I’m sure it will. However, it’s been ten full years between this film and part two and usually such a long layoff either translates into high pent-up demand or massive franchise erosion as a new generation just doesn’t care as much. Another factor here is that though the initial Men in Black in 1997 was well liked the sequel was not and if this movie were coming out only a few years later I have full confidence it would have underperformed. However, ten years is a long time and perhaps many still flock to see the first film on DVD/Blu-Ray but I’m expecting a final gross of $175-250 million unless I see that the trailers bring back the magic and are truly funny.

June 1: Rock of Ages, Safe Haven, Snow White and the Huntsmen

Here’s the first generally intriguing weekend as we have Tom Cruise/Alec Baldwin/Russell Brand in Rock of Ages facing off against Twilight star Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron in the modernized reboot of Snow White. If this were ten years ago the call would be easy to say Cruise trumps emo melodrama but this is modern Cruise who really needs Mission Impossible 4 this winter to be a huge hit to remain on the A-list. At the same time Kristen Stewart movies outside of Twilight have bombed hard and so far the vibe from Snow White and The Huntsmen feels very much like Red Riding Hood, albeit with a much expanded budget. I’m going to go with Rock of Ages for now to beat Snow White but this is the second week of Men in Black 3 so I’m going to say it barely remains number one. Of course if Snow White somehow manages to review well then perhaps the top three films are going to be really close to one another.

June 8: Madagascar 3, Prometheus

Family movie sequel versus the “original guy” is back. Both Madagascar movies made virtually identical grosses with the original movie clocking in at $193,595,521 and the sequel at $180,010,950. That’s enough of a decrease taking into account the rise of inflation for me to call Madagascar 3’s gross to be lower around $140-$160 million. However, being a sequel, business is going to be front-loaded and the second movie opened just north of $63 million. Why is this significant? Because we can expect part three to open around $50 million which makes it tough for the original guy.

I am of course talking about director Ridley Scott who returns after more than three decades away from the franchise with Prometheus. What is that franchise? It’s a little sci-fi horror movie called Alien. Yes, Ridley Scott returns to his seminal film so you know fans will be chomping at the bit to see the master return. The question is does the public know that Prometheus is the prequel to Alien? Long story short I’m reminded of The Abyss which tanked and one of the unfortunate reasons was that moviegoers did not know what the word “Abyss” meant. Do you think that same demographic will know what/who Prometheus means? 20th Century fox better get the marketing right. If it does Prometheus wins this week. If not it’s going to struggle.

June 15: I Hate You Dad, Jack the Giant Killer

I hate You Dad is the annual Adam Sandler comedy which means it will do reasonably well with a cap of around $90-$100 million. His movies open in the range of $22-$35 million which probably won’t be enough for a number one debut. The more intriguing movie is Jack the Giant Killer directed by Bryan Singer that revolves around one man’s fight against giants in a fantasy world setting. I seriously haven’t seen or read much about it so either it breaks out and makes a ton of money or it flops hard. I usually like Bryan Singer but he’s coming off Valkyrie and Superman Returns both of which didn’t exactly set the world on fire.

June 22: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Brave

Just for laughs one would love to say a movie with an absurd title like Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunters wins this week but it won’t. Brave will stomp all over it. Why? Simple – never bet against Pixar. Brave is the newest Pixar movie. It wins. End of story.

Watch the Brave movie trailer here.

June 29: GI Joe Retaliation

Star Trek fans will know that this was originally the launch date for JJ Abram’s sequel but because of many issues it has now been pushed back to May 17, 2013. In a rush to replace Star Trek Paramount Pictures rammed GI Joe Retaliation into this slot. I don’t have a good feeling about this one at all. The original was hardly well received and though it had a decent $54,713,046 opening weekend its final gross was merely $150,201,498. The best Paramount can hope for is that this sequel equals the first film but it could just as easily implode and come in lower. Its only hope for a number one debut is that I’m wrong and that many people actually liked the first film enough to run out to see the sequel but more importantly Paramount has got to wish hard that Pixar’s Brave performs more like the disappointing Cars 2 rather than Up or Wall-E. Up’s second weekend gross was $44,138,266 while Wall-E came in at $32,509,203. If Brave mirrors those traditional Pixar grosses it has a good shot at number one especially if audiences sour on GI Joe.

July 3: The Amazing Spider-Man

Looking at the summer movie schedule there are only two films that at this stage can possibly give The Dark Knight Rises a run for its money based on past performance. One is The Avengers especially if it mirrors Iron Man instead of Thor and end up slightly north of $300 million. The other is this film, The Amazing Spider-Man, yet of all the movies on this list this could be perhaps the toughest to call. If this were the supposed-to-be Spiderman 4 with director Sam Raimi and star Tobey Maguire I could call it for an easy $280-$320 million based on the three previous films but this is not that film. Instead this is Columbia picture’s reboot of the franchise after Raimi and Maguire backed out due to creative differences leaving the studio with no choice but to start over from scratch.

Thus the question is how to treat this film. On one hand it is essentially Spiderman 4 with a new cast and the studio will try its hardest to market the movie as being the spiritual successor to the enormously popular trilogy. On the other hand the trailer and everything seen so far from the movie makes the film look like nothing more than a retread of the original film just with a bunch of new faces. Do audiences really want to see the Spiderman origin story again? Can the filmmakers present something wholly original that will hook audiences into ignoring the previous trilogy?

If audiences don’t see any reason for this reboot to even be made the franchise is going to dive hard and the film might even perform much closer to something like Thor and Captain America which would be a disaster as it would only make around $180 million. If it however performs like Sam Raimi’s films its ceiling is considerably higher around $300 million. That’s a massive range from $180-$300 making the movie hard to call. However, I still think the franchise has enough gas to make this one end up in the low $200s.

Watch The Amazing Spider-Man movie trailer here.

July 13: Ice Age: Continental Drift, Ted

The previous two Ice Age films made virtually identical grosses of around $195 million each while the original clocked in at $176 million. While many might think nothing of these numbers they would be completely missing the point with this franchise as its global box office is nothing short of spectacular as Ice Age: The Meltdown made $460,057,537 overseas but Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs did an even better $690,113,112. No you are not reading that wrong. Ice Age is a beast of a franchise around the world. Still these are North American grosses we are evaluating so I’ll call this for around $170 million with around $50 million opening weekend. Can it beat Spiderman? It all depends if Spiderman opens closer to Sam Raimi’s franchise or if it performs like Green Lantern. Green Lantern opened to $53 million but then plummeted to an embarrassing $18 million second week. In comparison Spider Man 3 opened huge to $151,116,516 and pulled an additional $58,166,256 second week.

As for Ted, this one has some potential as it is the first live-action movie directed by none other than Seth MacFarlane, creator of Family Guy and American Dad from his own screenplay. Starring Mila Kunis and Mark Wahlberg it’s a story about a man’s teddy bear which miraculously comes to life. It sounds so weird but seeing as it is MacFarlane I shouldn’t be surprised yet it could be so bizarre that it either is a huge hit or a disaster.

July 20: The Dark Knight Rises

THE film to beat this summer and the only one which has the chance to obliterate the rest of the field. Obviously, there will always be a few sleeper hits during this season but as for hype there’s nothing that will match the supposedly final Batman movie from Chris Nolan. That said I don’t think it reaches the same gross as The Dark Knight’s $533,345,358. However, as of late I wouldn’t bet against Chris Nolan either who is on a hot streak with The Dark Knight and Inception. Even if the movie is not as good as the last and we throw in franchise fatigue it is still virtually guaranteed over $400 million anyways and looking at the other contenders this summer I just don’t see anything catching it. What about opening weekend numbers? The previous film pulled in an astounding $158,411,483 in its first weekend so that is the benchmark to beat. Although it is highly unlikely that the film scores in the same range as The Dark Knight with critics if it does then well, maybe it does get very close to the previous film’s gross.

Watch The Dark Knight Rises movie trailer here.

July 27: Step Up 4, Neighborhood Watch

Two new releases that are nothing more than cannon fodder as they go up against the second weekend of The Dark Knight Rises which should easily repeat as number one. For the sake of analysis just in case anybody doubts me let’s look a bit closer shall we? Step Up 4 is the third sequel to the dance franchise which is steadily losing steam. Step Up 3’s opening weekend was $15.8 million which was down from Step Up 2’s $19 million showing franchise erosion. No way it contends for number one. As for Neighborhood Watch it reunites Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn both actors who can either hit it big or fall on their face. If it performs like their movie Dodgeball it will open to around $30 million which sounds about right as Stiller’s last two movies in Little Fockers premiered at $30.8 million and Tower Heist at $24 when he was paired with Eddie Murphy. Again, little chance it comes close to the second weekend of The Dark Knight Rises which should be pulling in anywhere from $60-80 million.

August 3: The Bourne Legacy, Total Recall

An interesting weekend for two reasons – 1) Both movies are reboots with Jeremy Renner taking over the Bourne franchise from Matt Damon who backed out and Colin Ferrell taking on the role made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger. We’re still about a year away from this release date and I have a feeling one of these pictures might blink and move its release date as having both reboots coming out on the same weekend that are targeted to the same male demographic is not exactly the best strategy. 2) The second reason is more related to how we expect The Dark Knight Rises to perform. Even if it mimics The Dark Knight exactly it means its third weekend will be in the low $40 million range which is still very good and might even be good enough to pull it ahead of both reboots which either will perform well or flame out.

August 10: Dog Fight, Warm Bodies

Dog Fight is Will Ferrell’s new movie, which means it can bomb as low as the $33 million total gross for Semi-Pro or reach as high as The Other Guys at $119,219,978. I haven’t seen a single thing about this film although I know it is a political comedy which is usually a kiss of death genre. However, this is Will Ferrell so expect tons of low-brow hijinks. Can it come first? It has a shot if it perform more like The Other Guys which pulled a $35 million opening weekend. Fourth weekend for The Dark Knight was $26 million. It all depends on the two reboots that premiered the week before and if either one has legs. As for Warm Bodies it looks like a comedy-romance zombie movie and I would write it off completely if it weren’t for the fact that it is directed by Jonathan Levine who is coming off some major good press for his film 50/50 which gave the usually interminable Seth Rogen some of the best reviews of his career.

August 15: The Odd Life of Timothy Green

Time for the release of another movie that targets women and this is it headed by Jennifer Garner. By this time in the summer one would think women would be dying for some movies geared towards them but August is usually a rather blah month for movies anyways. However, this is the week after The Help opened this year so the time is right for something more serious/heart-warming than watching things blow up in action movies. Additionally, the plot sounds rather intriguing with a tinge of science-fiction/fantasy thrown in so I wouldn’t be surprised if it has sleeper hit written all over it.

Watch The Odd Life of Timothy Green movie trailer here.

August 17: Expendables 2

Just as we start to get more serious adult-oriented films like The Odd Life of Timothy Green along comes Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzennger to blow things up once again. With so much testosterone here there’s no doubt it will open bigger than the first film. As for total gross well it all depends if the film is any good. If it mimics the first film expect a final gross around $100-$120 million.

Watch The Expendables 2 movie trailer here.

August 24: Premium Rush, Sinister

See weekend below.

August 31: 7500, The Possession

Some might be wondering why I’ve decided to lump both these weeks together and that’s because these are the last two weeks of the summer movie season normally reserved for a ton of horror movies which might do reasonably well but have little chance of breaking out. I don’t see anything that shows me otherwise from these movies so far so don’t expect much more than a few teens going out on dates to scare themselves silly.

As we are still in December 2011 there is still plenty of time for some of these films to release better trailers or for buzz to really take off…or fall down. Additionally, there’s also a chance that studios will juggle release dates here and there which will obviously have a major impact on this analysis. I don’t usually do such an analysis more than five months away from the start of the summer movie season but this time I felt that I had enough info to give it a go. Let’s see how close I got with this preview when September 2012 rolls around and the final box office numbers are in. Until then, send in some comments as to my analysis or just general insights into which movies you are currently looking forward to.

I’m actually kinda looking forward to this one! Snow White and The Huntsmen. It sounds and looks like an interesting “re-mix” on the Snow White fairy tale and is obviously an adult version in that it’s a lot darker in tone. I got a good laugh when I read in one of the comments: “so Hancock’s wife hires Thor to hunt down and kill Bella”.

Here is an update on that post I made way back when about those two awesome Snow White revamps coming out this year. A trailer has just been released for the one with Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron, Snow White and the Huntsman, directed by Rupert Sanders. Check it out here…

And a bunch of photos from the previously untitled film by Tarsem Singh, now under the title “Mirror, Mirror”, have appeared on the web. I’m especially excited for this one- not only is Julia Roberts playing the evil stepmother (she’s probably the best actress ever), but the costumes and sets look incredible!

I have a confession to make: I’m not a huge fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean series. I know, it’s shocking, right? Swashbuckling pirates, sharp swords, deadly curses, and a few good-looking men; by all means, it’s right up my alley. But, for whatever reason, I just can’t get incredibly into it. I loved the first one when it came out. I thought the second one was okay, although I only saw it once or twice and a half. And I haven’t even seen the third one yet. Just because I haven’t been motivated enough to. So, when I heard they were making a fourth one, I rolled my eyes, shrugged my shoulders, and hoped it would be “decent”.

Fortunately, I can say Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was not just decent, but pretty good. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Perhaps not as novel as the original. And I kept expecting Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom to heroically fight their way into a scene (no such luck). But, on the whole, it was entertaining and fun to watch. Plus, I always love how the producers/writers incorporate lore into the films, and try to stick to the “look” of the time period. Makes for some really great sets and costumes.

I really feel awful for this review. I know it’s not great, and I shouldn’t be allowed to really say anything, because I still haven’t seen the 3rd. I think that will be one of my future projects- to watch all 4 and give my opinion. What did you true fans of Pirates think of the film? On a scale of 1 to Jack Sparrow?

I have to say, thought, that the best part of the series is the casting. It’s always spot-on, and this one was no exception. With returning actors like Geoffrey Rush (best actor ever), Kevin McNally, and- of course- Johnny Depp, it’s easy to remember that it’s still a Pirates film (despite having left out Will and Elizabeth). But the new talent was what pleased me the most- Penelope Cruz, Astrid Berges-Frisby, Ian McShane, and my personal new favorite, Sam Claflin.

Claflin has been a bit of a walk-on star. Especially considering his break-in role was as Richard in The Pillars of the Earth… last year. Literally, that was his first on-screen role ever, television or theater. And I’m sure the offers are now rolling in. In fact, a few have been announced already. Like Rupert Sander’s Snow White and the Huntsmen, set for June 2012 and starring Kristen Stewart as Snow White, Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsmen, Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen, and Claflin in the role of Prince Charming (all with a twist). The pictures revealed at Comi-Con don’t explain much, except that there seems to be battle, considering Stewart is in armor. Other than that, I guess we will have to wait and see!

This isn’t the only Snow White Revival, however. As I’ve previously mentioned, an untitled Snow White film directed by Tarsem Singh is slated for March of 2012, and despite the earlier release date, we have even less information on this one. All I can gather so far from IMdb is a girl-ier Snow White (in a dress versus full-on armor). However, an article at We Got This Covered sheds a bit more light on the basic plot details:

“The seven are a 19th century-set disparate band of international warriors belonging to a centuries-old order who have lost their way. Their meeting with an Englishwoman being chased by an ancient evil is the catalyst for their redemption.”

Sounds interesting. Not to mention Julia Roberts will be appearing as the Evil Queen, and I think she’s awesome.
