Few names are as hallowed among skiers and snowboarders as Warren Miller, the godfather of extreme skiing cinematography. Bay Area fans can watch his latest movie, Dynasty, on the big screen in high definition as part of an 82-city tour when it comes to San Francisco and Palo Alto later this week. I saw it at a high school auditorium in San Mateo last Sunday.

At age 81, Miller has retired from his wild ice and snow capades. But the movie’s director, Max Bervy, has interspersed new footage with grainy video shot by Miller during the past 60 years. The old shots lend character to the movie, while the new footage is spectacular with all of its visual effects.

Narrated by Olympic skier Jonny Moseley, Dynasty starts at Lake Tahoe–where the skiing is “crazy, good or crazy-good” as Moseley says–and then heads to British Columbia, Washington, Colorado, Norway, Alaska, Michigan (yes, Michigan!), Idaho and China for shots of extreme skiing on rugged terrain.

The 98-minute film also features a 9-year-old snowboarding phenom named Snow White (after another famous snowboarder with the last name “White”), adaptive athletes recklessly racing down the mountain in sit skis in skiercross at the X Games and Chinese villagers plunging down a hill on long skis roughly hewn from trees.

Showings will be at the Castro Theatre, 429 Castro St., San Francisco on Thursday, Nov. 19 at 8 p.m. and the Spangenberg Theatre, 780 Arastradero Road, Palo Alto on Friday, Nov. 20 at 8 p.m. In addition to the movie, there will be prize giveaways. Tocmai am vazut episodul din TopGear cu Romania in prim plan (varianta integrala). Episodul e foarte bun, asa cum m-as fi asteptat de la oamenii astia, pe care ii admir sincer.

Nu cu foarte mult timp in urma am vazut si “From Romania With Love”, un film despre snowboard-ul din Romania. Care si asta mi-a placut foarte mult.

Cele doua filme au cate ceva in comun, am observat. Intr-o ordine aleatoare… Ambele vad Romania ca pe o tara exotica, ambele sunt facute de niste straini care par sa intelega mai bine ce se intampla aici decat noi, ambele sunt printre cele mai bune filme de promovare a imaginii Romaniei worldwide.

Ma opresc aici cu asemanarile, iar diferentele sunt asa evidente incat nu o sa va pierd timpul.

Mai e inca ceva ce au in comun: reactiile oamenilor. Romanii par sa fie foarte jigniti cand afla ca in Romania sunt caini vagabonzi, tigani, carute, saracie si tot asa. Mai mult, nu pot trece peste aceste jigniri, pe care le iau foarte personal. Nu pot vedea, de exemplu, emotiile sau senzatiile pe care tara asta le transmite celor care ajung aici. Lucruri precum culoare locala (puteam sa folosesc “specific local”), autenticitate, naturalete par mai putin relevante. “Astia ne-au facut tigani” e tot ce conteaza.

Mai surprinzator, pentru mine cel putin, a fost sa aud comentarii de genul asta la filmul cu snowboard-ul.

O sa fie tare greu cu brandul asta de tara, pe bune…

Winter is arriving and my priorities are changing. This summer has been all about road cycling and mountain biking. I’m still going to continue to get out there on my bikes as much as possible, but it’s snowboarding season. To start the season off right, I bought a snowboard. It’s the last piece of the puzzle in my winter equipment line up. I hadn’t purchased a new snowboard since 2002, and that was my first. This board is much lighter and smaller, so I foresee more tricks in my riding career. With much of my summer money gone to bicycle maintenance and the allotment of my winter funds to lift tickets, there isn’t much left for the cars. I use the plural because it’s not just the project car Subaru that’s a money suck, my daily driver needs care too.

In order to ride mountain bikes or snowboard, I have to load up the gear, fill the car with gas and drive to the mountains. At first this seemed like an acceptable sacrifice for me. In fact, it’s still viable based on how much fun I have once I get there. But little did I realize how much of my project car money would be spent on the Focus. The most recent example is the set of snow tires I’m getting for the upcoming season. My summer tires have little grip in the wet, plus I’m planning several trips to Denver. I don’t want to spend the money on new tires, but it’s a must if I want to go snowboarding. Tires aren’t the only expense. I’ve also been changing the synthetic oil every 5,000 miles or so. The car has 113,000 miles on it, so larger items are prone to give out. So far I’ve replaced the timing belt, water pump, clutch, plugs, wires, shocks, brakes– all of the major wear items. The most obvious expense is the gas each trip requires. A less obvious expense is the wear over time, like the interior damage that snowboards and bikes incur when shoved into the hatch.

This past summer I solved the problem of where to put gear without damaging my interior while providing more passenger room: I bought a roof rack! I also bought the mounts for 4 snowboards and 2 bikes. Now I can just throw the muddy bikes and the wet snowboards right on the top of the car. It was $550 for the rack and all the mounts. Unfortunately, that’s $550 taken away from rebuilding my 2009 IHI VF48 Subaru STi turbocharger.

The intake manifolds with no soul and no purpose lay on the concrete bed that is the garage floor. A whole turbo farm, made up of TD04s with blown seals, sits dormant in its cardboard cage. Several injectors, all of them too small and all of them of questionable working order, sit on shelves. I open the garage all the time and see these sad forgotten car parts. Then I take a bike out and shut the door, forgetting all about the neglected Subaru museum.

Mein erster Testbericht:

Seit ein paar Tagen habe ich diesen Helm im Programm und muss sagen das ich hell auf begeistert bin. Hier haben die Jungs von Scott sich Mühe gegeben und einen klasse Helm entwickelt. Der erste Eindruck ist super, alles gut verarbeitet.  Die Ohrenschützer sind optional abnehmbar und je nach dem wie man es mag fährt man also mit oder ohne.

Ich empfehle diesen Helm auf jeden Fall weiter und wer sich das gute Stück mal anschauen will ist herzlich eingeladen in meinem Laden vorbei zu schauen.

La Plagne bénéficie de toutes les orientations, de toutes les altitudes et  a la réputation d’être une station plate et peu difficile mais c’est mal connaître son immense potentiel. C’est un des plus grands domaines skiables du Monde, un des plus beaux aussi pour la qualité de son “hors pistes” très sauvage. En effet elle possède l’un des domaines hors-pistes les plus intéressants des Alpes.

Du ski de hors pistes et des itinéraires prestigieux et variés  de la Face Nord du glacier de Bellcôte ou Friolin jusqu’aux forets d’arolles et de mélèzes de Montchavin et  Montalbert , en passant par le mont saint jacques , il y a toujours un endroit où la neige est encore vierge et poudreuse et je saurais la  trouver pour vous.

En initiation hors pistes ou Freeride engagé, en ski ou snowboard, sans négliser la sécurité ( équipement et formation ARVA pelle sonde) laissez moi vous guider dans les pentes poudreuses de la plagne….

Well, I can’t believe it but I actually started and finished a project today!

My dad and I started this morning around 11 am or noon-ish and I was out in the garage working away until 11 pm.

We had to use the band saw to chop up the metal we used for the feet of the rail as well as the top thin layer (to cover the holes).

Dad did most of the welding, but it was because he liked doing it, even though he would give me the gears about him doing all of the work haha.

Anyway it turned out quite well, and I can’t wait for the first REAL snowfall that should happen any day now!

Maybe I’ll add some pictures tomorrow.

It’s a cold Saturday night at home.  The snow has been falling all afternoon, but its very welcomed.  Val and I are ready to snowboard, and we need snow!!   This week begins the move into my new home with Val.  I forgot how big a task moving is.  I’m ready for it to be over and it’s just starting!!

For those of you that know about my web project, I went ahead and secured the domain and have begun moving the website over while I continue to develop.  Feel free to check it out at www.nocoastcolorado.com and let me know what you think.  Constructive criticism is always welcome.  It will be some time still before I advertise the site, but I’ve got a good start going and a few good minds helping me out.  I’m pretty excited.

Qu’est-ce qui est plus cool!?! Le ski ou le snowboard?!

L’industrie des sports de glisse a longtemps laissé entendre aux jeunes que le snowboard était beaucoup plus cool que le ski. En effet, les compagnies ont mis le paquet pour aller chercher les jeunes. Mais mis à part le fait que les compagnies de snowboard font, depuis des années, des articles de snowboard aux allures éclatées, les compagnies de ski commencent à réagir et font des skis et des accessoires qui ont la côte!!!

Mais les skis ont aussi changés de look…! Quand on pense aux skis de compétition, il est vrai que l’allure nous laisse un peu indifférent..!  Mais pour ce qui est des Twin-Tips, les compagnies comme Line, Nordica, Salomon, Armada, etc. utilisent des images qui ne peuvent laisser indifférents même les plus fervents de snowboards!

Et quand on regarde Simon Dumont nous montrer tous ces talents dans le quarterpipe en réussissant le record mondial, je crois que les skieurs ont droit au même respect que tous les snowboarders!!!

Un mélange entre freeskieurs et snowboarders a eu lieu lors du SMF de Ste-Dorothée en cette soirée d’Halloween (on ne sait jamais ce qu’une soirée d’Halloween peut nous réserver! ). 45 minutes de ski, 45 minutes de snowboard… et même si on me fait remarquer que le ski (en rail) était plate à regarder.. autant le snow (en rail) est plate à regarder…!!! En tant que skieuse, j’aime bien voir des skieurs sur un rail… en tant que snowboarders, vous aimez autant regarder du snowboard sur un rail…!! Ni l’un ni l’autre est tant différent… Il s’agit juste de passion..!!!
