Violet’s nose fell off.

And my friend laughed.

Now the first line could be the start to many kinds of stories: crooked plastic surgeons, science fiction with disposable noses or nasty fairy tales with monsters. But add the second line – and the weather, of course – and those of you quick on the uptake will realise we’re talking about a snowlady.

Being a writer, my writerly friends would of course name their snowperson. (Though “Violet”? I know snow can look blueish in the chilly light …)

I have no snowperson in my garden. But I have been out and cleared a path from the door to the car, round to the bins, and at the back I’ve cleared a path so I can continue to feed the birds. Each path is as straight and short as I can make it. Winding, zig-zagging paths have no attraction in snow. The postman’s path is as direct as possible.

Paths and roads turn up quite a lot in the Bible. The recommended kind is straight and smooth and narrow. Winding ones tend to be going the wrong way.

So what to do when you realise you can’t see the way ahead? Stop a while.

“In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.” Isaiah 30:15

Not exactly in tune with 21st century get up and go! We tend to rush around, telling friends whose hasty paths bisect ours for a moment “Let’s lunch! Have coffee some time!” but we never get around to it. Not enough time.

It seems to me that these snow days here in the UK have given us a wonderful opportunity for stopping the rush. For returning and finding rest in quietness. For dropping the hustle and bustle and giving trust a chance. For resting in God and letting Him look after everything.

And as He soothes your soul, you might just decide this is how you want to live more of the time. And it doesn’t require snow!

Our snowlady lost her head. We expected her to lose her carrot and raisins, but not her head! During a walk around the block, my sister and I noticed that some other snowmen were headless as well. Odd, we thought. Stolen maybe?

It feels like every day it’s different outside. One day there is a blanket of snow covering everything, the next day it looks like there has never been any snow. The weather is so unpredictable. So when you feel like playing in the snow, building a snowman or go sledding do it in the moment and don’t postpone it to the next day. Because that’s what I did. I wanted to go outside and play in the snow and told myself I would do this the next day. Unfortunately … the next day the snow was gone ! Just gone. Well better this way than roads covered by slush. But I was kind of sad anyways.

Sledding … Doesn’t it look like a lot of fun?

Here’s a” little” guide to building a perfect snowman (http://www.ehow.com/how_9769_build-snowman.html)

1. Test to see if you have ‘packing snow,’ which clumps together easily and isn’t too wet. The snow must pack to make a snowman.

2. Shape a handful of snow into a ball. Continue adding more snow and packing the ball until it’s too large to hold.

3. Place the ball on the snow in front of you and slowly roll it away from you. As more snow accumulates on the outside of your ball, pack the snow by pressing on it with your gloved hands.

4. Roll and pack the ball over and over until it is the size you want for the bottom of the snowman’s body.

5. Repeat for the midsection and head. The bottom should be the biggest ball, and the top should be the smallest.

6. Pack some extra snow between the layers to make them stick together. Place sticks down the center where the sections meet if your snowman is having trouble standing erect.

7. Give the snowman a face. Use coal, rocks, buttons or anything dark and round for the eyes. A horizontal stick or twig will make a good mouth, and a carrot is fine for the pointy nose. If you don’t have a carrot, a banana or a candy cane will do the job.

8. Cover the top of his head with an old plant for hair, or give him a knit hat to wear. Top hats will blow away unless secured.

9. Add arms, legs and other accessories. Push sticks into the sides of the middle section and hang old mittens on the ends, then place boots at the bottom for legs. Also consider adding items such as a shirt, a scarf or sunglasses.

Give it try, because winter is still young and there will be enough opportunities to build your personalized snowman (hopefully), or maybe snowlady? For those of you to lazy to go outside, or maybe can’t enjoy snow this time of the year, here one virtual snowman builder on the internet, which I find quite cute. There are a lot more, but this one is the best I would say.

http://www.abcya.com/snowman.htm

Whatever you do in the snow, I hope you’re enjoying it. And when you feel annoyed because of all the snow and the slush, always keep in mind that it’s only for a short period of time and you should be happy about it ! Because there are people in the world who can’t enjoy the snow and wish for it every year. I LOVE snow, and I hope it will be snowing a lot for my birthday on december 24., that would be a great gift. Until then I guess snow will come and go, as it did for the last few weeks.

Enjoy the weather.

With the temperatures getting to 3 degrees and some lingering drizzle it has meant that the snow has all but turned to slush and melted away. This of course also meant the demise of my half finished snowlady who was now missing her upper torso by the time I got home from work. Thankfully Papi managed to take a photo in the morning before she melted, she was a work in progress but rather fun to create…

I woke up with a sore throat this morning so I’ve been stocking up on the vitamins and lemon water, I really don’t want to come down with anything so I’m trying to be as stubborn as possible. For tonight’s training session I have opted to stay home for a kettlebell workout where I’m paying particular attention to my inner core & ab area… I’m still waiting on those abs to ‘pop’!

Oh dear Internet, things in this side of the coast have been chaotic to say the least. With my schoo

Oh dear Internet, things in this side of the coast have been chaotic to say the least. With my school, Joshua going to school (another post on its own…), relatives visiting, parties being planned and the whole mother/wife thing, it just seemed that 24 hours were not enough. But we are now slowly going back to our regular routine.

I was asked to plan a baby shower for a sweet mommy-to-be expecting her first baby – a baby girl. The grandma’s to be were the ones hosting the shower and they wanted the party to have a wintery feel to it.

A few months back I came accross a post from Hostess with the Mostess where Jennifer created this adorable Yarn Pom Snowpeople and I knew right away that I wanted to create that for this baby shower too. It was just too YARN cute!!

I went with an apple green and fuchsia color and the first thing I created was the invitation. From there I started to work on the SnowLadies ( so easy to make and came out so adorable!!) and the rest was history

I created a dessert table using a vintage iron Corsican crib. Once again may favorite cake stands came to play and oh did they play… I just love how versatile they are…a change of ribbon and voila…PERFECT!!

We had baby vanilla cupcakes, baby jars with coconut custard, pink and green M&Ms, Coconut bonbons and Hazelnut bonbons. Delicious!!!!

S’mores wrapped in cellophane and tied with ribbons were placed on each table set with a little poem chosen by the family.

I also did a diaper cake ( my second one, YAY) and I love how it came out!And I also made table runners for this party ( NO SEWING REQUIRED) using just fabric, ribbon and a hot glue gun

I had a so much fun creating the special things for this shower and I hope you enjoy how it turned out.

I have nice neighbours. At 7.10 this morning I heard CJ shouting “what’s that noise?”. There was a scraping noise coming from outside, so we headed to the window to investigate. My investigative skills would have been enhanced by putting my glasses on, it’s true, and I did spend a few moments wondering why Mr Parklover was clearing the couple opposite’s drive whilst leaving his car running in the middle of the street. Then I realised it was the guy from opposite, with a new car a bit like Mr Parklover’s, clearing a path to his heavily pregnant wife’s car for her, before he headed off to work.

Very thoughtful, I’m sure you’ll agree, so I didn’t mind that it resulted in my being asked to go and build a snowman at regular intervals from 7.15 onwards. I persuaded CJ that we should wait until it was light/we were dressed, then made our petite snowlady. This is as big as we can get before a little voice whimpers “My toesies are cold” and we have to head back indoors.

We ventured out later for a sledging session, the first time I’ve been since I was a child. We both loved flying down the hills at Heaton Park, and CJ loved being pulled back up the hill to the carpark, when the toesies had frozen again. Me, not so much, but at least it was easier than carrying her.

I’ve thrown the term ‘cultural ownership’ around a fair bit recently, and I guess

I’ve thrown the term ‘cultural ownership’ around a fair bit recently, and I guess what I mean by that are the things in life with someone’s stamp all over them. In context? Well, what I’m really talking about these days is stuff that are now, forever, “Alice’s”. And I’m writing this because Alice owns the snow.

The UK, as with everywhere else, continues down this freaky route of forgoing seasons in favour of constantly fluctuating weather. Tonight, the heavy rain flicked over to snow in about the space it took me to walk from the Opera House to Covent Garden tube. By the time I left at Finsbury Park a thin white film wrapped the cars and quieter sidestreets. About 20mins later at the top of Muswell Hill my footprints were being covered by the falling snow.

I love this kind of shit, but tonight I’m just sad.

When Alice broke up with me I switched on records and films that pre-dated our relationship, finding solace in memories and sensations dredged up by familiar rhythms and thrums. I realised, pretty fucking quickly, that there’s stuff like Gulag Orkestar and High Fidelity that will always be something I associate with Alice. In fact, given the memories I have, Beirut are probably untouchable for the time being, and the worst thing I could do at the moment is put on ‘To Build A Home’ by The Cinematic Orchestra. There’s just too much history…

But the problem with using the phrase ‘cultural ownership’ is that it suggests its just the detritus of media that’s affected. There are spaces (The Phoenix Gardens, Hastings, Edinburgh, Brockley, Nunhead Cemetery), people, sensations and sights that are hers as well, and though I know it all gets easier (or, more accurately, I’ll think about it all less and less often) it isn’t particularly easy right now.

Because Alice owns the snow.

This could have been a Polaroid Press piece, but I didn’t want even the thinnest of fictional veneers on it.

Early on in our relationship I awoke on a chilly morning in Crouch End to see the town covered in snow. It was beautiful. I immediately text everyone in the city and demanded we have a snowball fight on Green Park: Alice was the only one who said yes (although Hero Mark would later join us). Initially I failed in my task to look impressive and a social butterfly before my new – and mostly, at this point, secret – lady. She was not yet The Lady, and we were cute but by no means a Sure Thing. The sight of me, skinny jeans skittering beneath a head covered in too long hair, tumbling about in the snow and the voice of her, wrapped up and full of smiles and laughter, started clicking together an awful lot that afternoon. By the end of our evening shift a lot more people knew we were together. Snow made us a couple.

A beautiful year passes. Alice starts at Uni and, gently, becomes The Lady, the love of my life, the cliched better half, better by far. I’m long settled in the “Ian-Curtis-by-way-of-David-Tennant’s-Doctor” version of me, the version of me that’s twee as fuck and writes The Polaroid Press. It’s a short while after I’ve had to abandon my beloved North London and I wake up beside Ali still not quite sure about how I feel now I live with her. I wake, and outside of the curtains I figure it must be early bright daylight because all I see is white light. One or both of us double take – snow! It’s a quiet thirty seconds as we lie still, each drifting towards the alertness that results in us launching out of bed, hauling on all the jumpers we can and tramping off to Nunhead, where we built a snow lady, laughed a lot and walked among an eerily quiet cemetery. We were thoroughly loved up at that point, and it suddenly felt like moving in was the most natural thing in the world.

And I’m thinking about all of this while I head home tonight, on the day I got a card from Ali’s parents replying to the letter I’d written them, thinking about how final and far away and fucked the whole thing seems, because Alice owns the snow.

But I’m really really happy I gave it to her.

Matt, chilly and tired, 2008
