Mun ei yleensä tuu kateltuu telkkaria ku iltasin, mut tos joku aika sit (kesk = kauan ennen sikakaranteenia) satuin sit röhnöttää sohvalla jo päiväsaikaan, olisko ollu joku arkikrapula tai vastaava… anyway, nelonen päällä ja ruudusa So you think you can dance (Tanssi jos osaat) -niminen jenkkisarja ja jotenki jäin koukkuun – instant bondaus!

Kysees on siis vähä niinku Idols tai Talent, mut pelkästään tanssijoille: riittää, että osaa tanssia – lajilla ei väliä, tosin sit joutuu kyl adaptoituun itelle vieraisiinkin tyyleihin. Aluks on noloja karsintoja, sit tiukkaakin tiukempi vegasviikko. Ja sieltä sitten karsitaan top 20 varsinaiseen “ohjelmaan” 10 miestä ja 10 naista.

Ite ohjelmassa tanssiparit arvotaan ja joka viikko sit arvotaan parille myös tanssilaji. Siellä on esim moni b-boy ollu paskat housussa ku arpa on osunu vaikka quickstepin kohalle. Siinä on kyl yks perkele tanssilajiks, huhhuh. Hiki kirpoo otsalle pelkästä kattelusta. Ei ne tuomarit sitä turhaan kutsu termillä “kiss of death”

Jumalainen juontaja, Cat Deeley <3

No juu, mut joka viikko kolme vähiten ääniä saanutta paria joutuu tanssiin vielä soolot ja ekana viitenä viikkona tuomaristo päättää ketkä mies ja nainen tippuu pelistä pois. Sit top 10:n kohalla kaikki valta on katsojilla aka jenkkiäänestäjillä, joiden äänet määrää ketkä tipahtaa.

Täs sarjas on oikeesti lahjakkaita ihmisiä (+ hotteja pimuja, useempi selkeesti päivän_pimu_matskua), ihan parhaat tuomarit, loistavat koreografit ja kakkoskaudesta eteenpäin hoteista hotein juontaja Cat Deeley.

Lacey & Pasha (hip hop) Hauska.

Jeanine & Brandon (paso doble) Jeanine <3

Ashleigh & Jacob (hip hop) Tää on ny viimesimmästä jaksosta mitä oon katellu ja tosi hyvää settii vaikka toi tyttö on ballroom ja jätkä contemporary!

… josko riittäis tältä erää, lisäilen kommentteihin si kiinnostuksen mukaa lisää suosikkeja. Oho, tulipa tästä pitkä… vähemmän kaljaa, enemmän unta. Ny unta palloon ja kuolaa petariin. Öitä tyypeille!

We’ve been a bit quiet here at @fatroll, and personally that’s because I’ve had a fork or spoon in my hand since early last week shoveling food into my mouth preventing me from posting.

Yeah, there are way too many fails to document over the past seven days. GUILTY. Totally guilty of falling off the bandwagon and deciding to crawl behind it instead of jumping right back on.

It has been the typical too much food in one sitting syndrome, and I can honestly admit to feeling so disgusted with myself that I’m up at an ungodly hour blogging instead of shopping.

That ladies and gentlemen is the post-Thanksgiving guilt rearing its ugly head. Shopping for clothes would probably just make me cry at this point.

On the bright side, I think I’ve actually hit my climax for the holiday season on food comas. The realization came after watching a clip of Shakira on YouTube. She is one hot chick, and I’m pretty sure I covet her body more than anyone else (well maybe except for my friend Arlette). With that said, the new goal is to achieve THAT (please refer to picture below).

It’s time to get up and shed what I’ve gained over the past week. In fact, I’m meeting up a friend in a couple of hours at a local gym for a punishment workout.

Soon we’ll all begin to see the ads for gym discounts and starting the new year off by prioritizing our health. I say, why wait? I’m going to look smokin hot for New Year’s..period.

Good luck to everyone emerging from their food comas!

It’s been a while since I’ve checked in on So You Think You Can Dance, and a lot has hap

It’s been a while since I’ve checked in on So You Think You Can Dance, and a lot has happened since then. We’ve had injured dancers (RIP Billy Bell), eliminations on performance nights thanks to the World Series, and some semi-interesting dances. No dancer has really reached out and grabbed my attention like previous seasons, but the top 10 will definitely show who the true front runners are, and who will be heading home soon.

Before I get to my thoughts on the top 10 dancers, I need to take a moment to address the atrocity that is Victor Smalley’s elimination last night. His solo was so much stronger than Nathan’s last night, and I’m perplexed as to how Victor went home while the judges’ personal punching bag will live on to annoy for another week. Victor was never a standout to me, but I felt the grounds of his elimination were unfair, and for once, I actually agreed with Nigel Lythgoe. Scary. Also, I’ve been in love with Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” since the first time I heard it on the radio, and I knew it was just a matter of time before it would make an appearance on SYTYCD. Imagine my disgust when terror queen Laurieann Gibson choreographed a clunky, forgettable routine for sparkle twins Mollee and Nathan. So disappointing. I wish we could put the song back into the rotation for, say, a Nap/Tab routine for Jakob and Kathryn. Someone make this happen, please!

On to the top 10…

I expressed my dislike of Ashleigh at the start of the top 20, and while I was able to quash my annoyance so far, I feel like her gig is up soon after leaving her partnership with Jakob. Her obnoxious facial expressions have been kept to a minimum, but after each routine, I couldn’t help but notice she never did much dancing. A lot of hair whipping and posing, sure, but nothing incredibly substantial. The judges have fallen over themselves to praise her, constantly raving over how much she’s grown. I have to challenge them on that…I think people who have been voting for Jakob and Ashleigh are only voting for one half of the partnership. Also, expect Ashleigh to “randomly” draw her husband as a partner in the upcoming weeks.

Male ballroom dancers usually light up the stage on SYTYCD (see: Dmitry, Pasha, Artem and Ivan), but Ryan has left me unimpressed so far. He’s a good dancer, but he’s really nothing special. I think his overt masculinity was nicely balanced out by Ellenore’s quirky grace. He has no discernible personality outside of working out, doing extreme sports, and obsessively waxing his eyebrows. He’ll go pretty far in the top 10, but I don’t think he’ll crack the top four.

Russell was an early favorite of mine, but there hasn’t been much to keep him on my favorites list since the top 20 started. So far, it’s been a lackluster foxtrot, an awkward hip-hop, a pretty good Afro-jazz, another lackluster foxtrot, a clunky samba and an overpraised contemporary piece. That track record doesn’t exactly scream top four to me. I do love Russell’s personality, and when he performs in his own style, I remember why I loved him so much in the Vegas round. He really needs to step it up and be more consistent if he wants to make it far.

Mollee, Mollee, Mollee. SYTYCD’s resident Cindy Brady (thank you to Entertainment Weekly for making that comparison) annoys me more and more each week, a feat I didn’t think possible. Despite having been in the bottom a few times and delivering solos that were nothing but glorified gymnastics routines, Mollee is still in the competition. She is a pretty decent dancer, but we haven’t really seen her in a genre that she’s completely owned. She can’t do sexy, she can’t do hip-hop, and everything else has been just so-so. I’m waiting for her to blossom into the woman the judges repeatedly claim her to be, because right now, she really does look like a graduate of “Dolly Dinkle’s regional hip-hop class 101.” (Help…I’m agreeing with Grandpa Nigel again!)

Jakob has been the shining star of season six thus far. His technical ability seems to be endless, and he comes across as very personable in his interview packages (not to mention he’s BFFs with season five winner Jeanine…can they please do a duet on the finale episode? How awesome would that be?) I think Jakob will excel even more once he’s ditched his cheese ball, coattail riding partner. I beg you to show me a genre this guy can’t do, therefore making him a lock for the top four.

I’m pretty lukewarm about Noelle, considering she’s had the same middling lineup of dances as Russell. She’s definitely got great lines and technique, as shown in her contemporary piece this week, but her attempt at sexiness in the samba was kind of hard to watch. I think my biggest problem with Noelle is that she reeks of dance school competitions. The cheesy grins and some of her posturing are so reminiscent of my own dance school experience, and I don’t think that kind of dancing will get her very far into the top 10.

There is nothing I love more than a relative unknown at the start of the top 20 turning into an absolute dynamo by the top 10. This is how Jeanine evolved last season, and I think Kathryn is following the same trajectory. She’s gone from unknown crying girl to talented tamer of emotional b-boys. From a cave woman in a Dave Scott hip hop to a fiery vixen in a Tony Meredith paso doble, Kathryn has handled whatever she’s been given with her extensive talent. I absolutely adored her partnership with Legacy, and while I’m sad to see them break up, I’m anxious to see how she’ll grow with other partners.

I was unnecessarily harsh on Legacy before the top 20, thinking him irritating and overhyped. I am definitely eating my words now. What I used to think was insincere is now an emotional dancer learning a lot on a once in a lifetime journey. His lack of technique is sometimes very evident, but the fact that he was able to pull of a haunting contemporary piece, an attention-grabbing paso doble and an emotional Viennese waltz speaks to his ability to learn quickly. Kathryn has definitely taught him a lot, and I fear that Legacy may falter without her helpful partnership, but his sincerity and eagerness will hopefully carry him far.

I can’t really recall why I thought Ellenore was annoying during the Vegas round. Sure, she’s quirky and definitely unique, but I’ve enjoyed watching her dance. She is so versatile and so good at what she does. I don’t think I even watched Ryan during their Broadway piece this week because Ellenore was just so phenomenal. The idea of a potential partnership between her and Jakob has me anxious for Tuesday nights.

Oh, Nathan. How quickly you’ve gone from young upstart to judges’ punching bag. As soon as I found out he was paired with Susie Sunshine, I knew things couldn’t be good for him. I knew Nathan had talent, but there was something about his partnership that brought out the irritating brat in him. The judges latched on to this, with both Nigel and Adam Shankman taking turns handing him slices of humble pie. I think he would have been so much better off with someone else as a partner, because he’s now been so strongly associated with giggles, skipping and annoyance. It will be interesting to see how Nathan internalizes Adam’s advice to watch what he says, as well as how he fares with a less obnoxious partner.

I’m thankful for being able to pause live TV. I can start an American Idol results show 2/3 of the way through, skip past all of the filler and still catch the ending right along with the rest of the world.

It’s been nice to see the Seinfeld cast again too, but Larry’s the true star of the show.

I’m not sure who gave the programming controls to the Metalheads out there, but I’d like to buy them a shot of Jagermeister. VH1’s That Metal Show and Fuse’s Talking Metal are standouts of the resurgence. Rawk!

Via Netflix, I’m catching up on Dexter. I totally missed it the first time around due to my lack of Showtime. This show is dark and dirty, and did I mention the main character has very few redeeming qualities? I can see why the networks were so afraid of this show. Dig it.

HER: That we only have one TV in our house and I am frequently reminded of the depths of my husband’s love. Case in point – last night, he watched Donnie Osmond take home the Glitter Ball trophy on Dancing With the Stars, even though the Mav’s were playing. I’ll return the favor, of course, when I watch seven football games with him on Sunday. But that’s why God created DVR. Which I’m also thankful for.

I’m thankful for my wife, who let’s me watch as much TV as I want. I’m thankful for my newborn son whom I look forward to imparting my love of TV on, but I promise to make sure he goes outside and plays as well.

I’m thankful for HBO and their wonderful shows True Blood, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Big Love, Bored To Death, The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, and of course the upcoming mini-series The Pacific.

I’m thankful that Kurt Sutter created the world of Sons of Anarchy, and took us along for the ride. As season two comes to an end I can honestly say that I believe it is currently the best hour of TV on.

I’m thankful for the great people who write for this blog. You make my life easier, and I really appreciate it.

I’m thankful for this blog and all its readers. When I started this thing about a year and a half ago I never imagined that anyone aside from a few of my friends and family would read it. This month we’ve had over 30,000 visitors, and that blows my mind. We have some big changes coming up, and I hope that everyone keeps coming back. As long as you are reading we will be watching.

Case in point: http://twitter.com/blakemcgrath.

Oh Blake, you tattooed, dancing sonofabitch. Turns out that 4,830 people want to see what this So You Think You Can Dance US/Canada dancer/choreographer/judge has to say, and what he has to say usually includes a whole of God-talk, surprisingly.

Besides shout outs to Janet Jackson (he turned down dancing on her tour because of SYTYCDC … really!?!), Paula Abdul and SYTYCD folk like Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and Lacey Schwimmer, Blake also tweets night-time prayers and blessings.

Sample religious tweet:

The Lord knows ur struggles! Confess to him and live guilt free. Best feeling in the world. He loves you more than u know!

He also tweets about a supposed music career that I don’t care to check out. Don’t worry, it’s not all God talk and business-speak. We also can check out gems like this:

Mr sun mr golden sun please shine down on meeeeeeeee

testing captions Ladies and gentlemen, your top 10 dancers! And… not too shabby. If you had to

testing captions

Ladies and gentlemen, your top 10 dancers! And… not too shabby. If you had told me a few weeks ago that Mollee, Ashleigh and Legacy would still be in the competition on “So You Think you Can Dance,” I wouldn’t have believed you.

On this Thanksgiving, I’m thankful that Legacy, Kathryn, Ashleigh, Jakob, Noelle and Russell were safe on Wednesday night’s result show. I was definitely less surprised than the judges that Mollee and Nathan ended up in the bottom three — it seems like their “fan favorite” status isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. It will be very interesting to see how they do with new partners next week. Another disagreement with the judges: I enjoyed Nathan’s solo better than Mollee’s. I’ve been betting against Mollee for a while now, and I don’t think she’ll make it far in the top 10.

Karen and Victor going into the bottom three was pretty obvious from last night, but Ryan and Ellenore in danger was a real shocker. For the life of me, I can’t figure that one out (other than to say that Russell seems to be a true “fan favorite”). I enjoyed the couple’s solos, though the judges were not too pleased with Ryan’s.

After a Shakira performance that reminded me a bit of “Rhythm Nation,” judge Nigel Lythgoe didn’t seem to have any more of a clue than I did on why Ellenore isn’t getting votes. Needless to say, though, she was safe, and Karen’s ouster was as certain as a food-coma on Thanksgiving.

Then, tricky Nigel threw us a curveball, making it seem like Victor was safe after announcing that the guys’ results were not unanimous. When he criticized Ryan’s solo, I worried that we’d be two ballroom dancers short in the top 10, but then he told Nathan that he would have preferred to see him go, which gave the game away. And so, Victor was sent home, without leaving much of an impression.

Are you thankful for this top 10, and looking forward to having your say next week? Are you as confused as I am as to why Ryan and Ellenore aren’t getting votes? Share your thoughts on video, or in the comments below, and in the meantime, have a happy Thanksgiving!

I’m staying at a friend’s house and watched SYTYCD on his huge iMac. I may be turned into a Mac-User after all: It’s a neat machine. So I enjoyed this week’s performances on a big screen. Fabulous: Both the screen and the performances. Even my friend – whom I have tried to teach ballroom for five years at university and is now enjoying it under rather more professional training – after saying he wasn’t interested couldn’t take his eyes off the screen after Ryan’s and Ellenore’s Lindy Hop. It was the greatest show of the season, no doubt. Let’s take a look at the individual couples:

Ryan and Ellenore: Great performance in the Lindy-Hop, though it felt a bit, well, distanced for me. It was great no doubt, but I didn’t get all excited. Maybe it’s the Lindy-Hop, I’m a Jive-Man, so maybe it just felt weird to me. Their Broadway routine – on the other hand – was outstanding. Since I started watching SYTYCD in season five, I have not seen a Broadway routine danced to such perfection. They combined quirkiness and darkness perfectly, greatly performing along every change in the music. Outstanding!!!

Legacy and Kathryn: Both of their performances were very well suited for them, they both depicted their story in very different ways. Sonya’s Jazz routine, was just WOW, in both choreography and execution! Their Waltz first of all, well wasn’t a Waltz. They never were in closed position, I found it hard to hear the 6/8 beat in the music, and yes, Legacy’s technique was bordering on non-existent. But their performance was great. There was one moment where Kathryn looked at Legacy with such an encouraging smile – which alone told the story. And Kathryn’s metamorphosis from sexy in the Jazz routine to elegant in the Waltz was remarkable and showing her versatility.

Victor and Karen: Yes, their Tango was fabulous. Again, it played to her strength in sensuality and Victor lead it exquisitely – that said, I would add to Nigel’s critique on his swayback that he also should have been a bit lower in his knees. Their hip-hop showed once more that Karen so far survived on sensuality alone. Even taking into account that it was their first show together they were terribly out of sync. They themselves set expectations high with their comments before the performance – and failed to meet them.

Nathan and Mollee: As the judges said, Mollee wasn’t 100% committed in their Hip-Hop and that kind of spoiled it a bit. Plus, I did not really like the combination of modern music and the “history lesson” story it felt mismatched. It was great to see Nathan have genuine fun! Their CanCan was a goof-ball festival, well danced and thoroughly entertaining. I don’t quite see that it once was, as Tyce said, a couple’s dance, because they hardly touched each other. But certainly one of the best performances of the evening.

Russell’s and Noelle’s Samba felt awkward. Excuse me: Russell should not be made wearing these Ballroom-outfits. It was certainly good in technique, much better than could be expected, but it felt misplaced. They more than made up for that in their contemporary routine. I love Tyce’s contemporary pieces, and they were breathtaking and moving in their performance. It was the most memorable piece this season and fabulously executed. They are both growing superbly and this routine showed it to the max.

I just have one word for Jakob and Ashleigh’s Lyrical Jazz number: WOW!!! It played to their strengths, both were beautiful to see. It left me breathless. Their Cha-Cha didn’t, but I was stunned. I so enjoyed seeing their roles inversed with Jakob now having to live up to Ashleigh and he did. She took it home – and remember that that should not be taken for granted. They are certainly the best dancing couple in this competition.

Well, where does that leave us? I haven’t seen the results yet, so I’ll attempt a guess. And it’s going to be just tat, a guess, because I have no idea who could be in the bottom three, except for maybe one couple. I think Karen and Victor will be there again, for one because they deserve it after this show, and they are certainly no strangers to the bottom three. Nathan and Mollee showed last week that their following is not as big as expected, and could find themselves there again. After tonight’s first round I thought Russell and Noelle were in danger, but they picked up, while Legacy and Kathryn failed to impress with their Waltz. My guess is that the bottom three will come from these four couples.

No idea as to whom the judges pick. For the boys it probably will be Victor, for the girl, I hope it’s Karen. She’s lost when she can’t be sensual, so she least deserves to be in a show where variety of talents is the key.

This will be a warp speed reaction to the results show, because I fast forwarded through everything

This will be a warp speed reaction to the results show, because I fast forwarded through everything but the opening group number (it was so weird that I was sure Wade Robson choroegraphed it, and was surprised to discover it was actually a Tabitha and Napoleon creation), the solos, about 15 seconds of Shakira’s horrific performance, and the final results.

The Bottom Three Couples

Nathan and Mollee

Ryan and Ellenore

Karen and Victor

I continued my streak of getting 2 out of 3 predictions correct. I am really shocked that Russell and Noelle weren’t in this group. I guess voters like any contemporary routine, even if it’s choreographed by Tyce Diorio and involves body painting. I am relieved that Ryan and Ellenore survived the night, as well as Nathan. As for the solos, I completely disagree with Nigel – he claimed that Mollee’s solo represented the first time this season that someone really fought for their place in the competition. If that was fighting, then he has a different definition than I do. I thought it looked more like a gymnastics routine than a dance solo. Ryan’s solo was pretty standard ballroom stuff, but he had lots of personality. I enjoyed Ellenore’s quirky solo, yawned through Karen’s (how many times could she twirl around in a circle before she moved on to something else?), and was too disturbed by Victor’s costume to notice much about the dancing. That leaves Nathan, who – in my opinion – gave the most heartfelt and technically excellent solo of the night (with Ellenore being a close second). I enjoy watching Nathan dance so much more when he doesn’t have Mollee at his side. I look forward to seeing who he and everyone else will be paired with next week!

Who the Judges Sent Home

Karen

Victor

I have no complaints about these results. I’ve been waiting for Karen’s departure for a few weeks now, and I never connected too much with Victor. I wish them well, but am excited about the top ten dancers who have survived to this point! It will be interesting to see if my favorites change after seeing them dance with different partners next week. I’ll wait another week before I rank the contestants from my most to least favorite. For now, I’m sticking with Jakob and Ashleigh.

Once again the viewing audience voted and the bottom six dancers were chosen from the results. The bottom six dancers “danced for their life” and the judges cut one guy and one girl. This established the Top 10 dancers. Starting next week only the voting audience will decide the fate of the dancers. The judges will only be on the show for giving their opinions, which we consider valuable in making a decision to vote.

Tonight the bottom three Guys were Ryan, Victor, and Nathan and the bottom 3 Gals were Karen, Ellenore, and Mollee.

The judges were unanimous on their decision tonight on the girls. The judges were NOT unanimous with the guy choice. The gal cut tonight was Karen and the guy was Victor. Nigel commented that if he had his way, Nathan would be the one going home tonight because he has not grown since the beginning of the season. (We agree with Nigel)

Too Karen and Victor we at AAN send our congratulations for making the Top 12 and even though the both of you are leaving tonight, “Let nothing stand in your way as you continue your journey to complete your dream.”

AAN Final comment:

After watching SYTYCD for the five previous seasons we think this Top 10 is by far and away the best ten dancers to reach this level of the competition. Each in themselves has something special to offer in their dancing, whether it’s technique or the simple fact that they are so far out of their specialty and conquering each weeks challenge. This is going to be one tough season to decide who to vote for and with that in mind, the dancers need to connect with the viewing audience through their dance. With the format change of the dancers partnering by random from next week on, the dancers will lose their comfort level of having the same partner each week. In our opinion this will be a deciding factor in deciding “America’s Favorite Dancer.”

Starting next week the viewers will vote out the bottom guy & girl without say from the panel. I dislike this because then the solos are meaningless (no more dancing for your life) plus the judges have a better idea of what is good dancing. This means the contestants and choreographers will be challenged for chemistry but the top ten will know they are going on tour so cool for them.

The first two couples are Karen and Victor and Ashleigh and Jakob. The first couple in danger tonight is…Karen and Victor. As expected (and desired). Ashleigh made it into the top ten! After she almost wasn’t in the top 20! Mary says they’ve been growing so they have a chance to fight to stay in.

(Random thought- who else thinks “oh how the mighty have fallen” when they see Karen from Will & Grace in the I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter commercial?)

The next two couples are Mollee and Nathan and Kathryn and Legacy. This is a tough one as Mollee and Nathan had a bit of a tough first number but I feel like Legacy is doing better than expected which isn’t the same as doing as well as the others. The second couple in danger is…Mollee and Nathan. Sad but hopefully they’ll have an awesome set of solos. Adam thinks the couples didn’t connect with the audience but if they get through they’ll have the chance to dance with new partners. Maybe as a couple, they are too young together. Adam points out that the clips before the performances are important too because it affects how the audience views you.

Noelle and Russell and Ellenore and Ryan. I kind of hope to keep Noelle and Ryan…I like Russell but I’m not in awe of him and I think I like Nathan and Victor better. (Once again they show the order of Noelle and Russell’s performances in the wrong order.) And I’d like to see Mollee and Noelle return. (I wonder if Noelle and Mollee are still as close as they were during tryouts. In the bottom is…Ellenore and Ryan. Nigel says he’s frustrated but then again the people who made it through were great too. He says Ryan is one of the best partners and Ellenore is one of the best girls. (Wouldn’t it be fun to see Ashleigh and Ryan partner but not for ballroom?)

Meanwhile, a dancer from the American Ballet Theater. Cool for her though I wish they’d gotten more than one dancer. Also, I’m not a fan of slow ballet. I much prefer it to be reinterpreted into a more modern style. But ouch for her toes…

Karen up first doing what is once again a relatively lame and repetitive solo.

Next is Victor with something cool and slightly odd.

Now Mollee. And she comes out kicking, again with a unique and exciting solo.

Nathan fourth. Also goo though I think last time was a little better. He had some good moments and some mediocre ones.

Fifth comes Ellenore. Her is interesting, not as great as Mollee but still good. I think a big choreographed routine by her would be interesting.

Ryan is last. His solo is sadly reminiscent of Karen’s (we get it, those steps are advanced but give us something more!).

Now we get Shakira. It’s pretty awful The only thing cool about the dancing was that it was a lot of people in sync. Shakira can’t really song, she did a move that looked like something most people only do behind closed doors and I hate when songs refer to the singers (for example the line “Shakira shakes her hips like nobody can”). Some of the dance moves looked particularly awkward when done only halfway by Shakira.

Girls: Nigel says that Mollee fought for her place in the top ten more so than any other. Ellenore gets a good reaction with the audience and the judges don’t know how she can improve. Karen meanwhile is a fantastic performer and it is difficult for ballroom to do a solo but it felt like she’d given up tonight. And therefore, Karen will be going home. (There’s something sad about the song being “Don’t Let Me Go” as they’re being let go.)

Guys: This decision is not unanimous. Victor has grown as a person and his solo was terrific. Ryan has been delightful but his solos are tough. His partner work is tremendous though. (Does this mean Nathan is leaving?) Nathan hasn’t really grown yet on the show. Nigel would have sent Nathan home but the choice was for Victor to go. Sad but I guess I didn’t want any of the bottom guys to go.

It’s one thing that they do all the annoying couple things that we hate to see – finish each others sentences, eat off of each others plates without asking, have couple inside jokes, and show more unnecessary and disgusting pda than the Hot Tub Lovers from Saturday Night Live.

However, they have been together so long that it’s arguable that they’ve gotten a little too comfortable in their relationship. The mystery is gone and the curtain has lifted:

- They’ve started to watch the same tv shows. Here’s their TiVo show list: Glee, MANswers, American Idol, Secret Girlfriend, So You Think You Can Dance, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Project Runway. Surprisingly, the last one is his choice because he thinks Tim Gunn has a “snappy sense of style” and is a “great mentor figure for the designers.”

- They’ve started to dress alike. Guess which one is wearing Lane Bryant stretch pants and who’s wearing sweat pants, they’ll never tell. And who can forget Kangol – thank goodness for their matching his and hers tracks suits that come with complementary newsie hats.

- Hygiene has been thrown out the door. Let’s just leave it at that.

- They’ve adopted the same mannerism. She watches tv with one hand down her pants and he tries on multiple outfits before heading out to get “just the right look.”

- They’ve imparted useless knowledge upon each other. He finally knows where the Oyster Fork is located on a formal place setting and she can identify his favorite football team’s “Strong Right Motion 84 Pass-Pitch” play by how the players line up from the huddle.

- Last and not least, they’ve begun to use the bathroom with the door open. There’s no secrets between them after this. When visiting them, make sure to never show up unannounced or let your curiosity get the best of you and go into the bathroom with your eyes open. There are no winners in that game.

I really don’t have any time to write this (I’m stealing time from cleaning), but I was so angry about something last night I had to write.

For weeks Ashleigh has been floating along on the fumes of Jakob’s firey performances and last night was just the last straw for me. I think she was fine in the cha-cha, but here’s their first dance:

She LITERALLY walked and rolled around the stage while Jakob was incredible. Then he picked her up some. Then the judges completely praise HER over and over and over while the rest of the girls are killing themselves actually dancing, getting small fractions of the love they lavishly present to Ashleigh.

But I have no doubt she’ll get into the top 10. She’s like the Comfort of this season for me (seriously). I’m excited to see how she does with a new partner (mostly because I think she’ll be exposed for the talent moocher she is.)

Onto what I liked: Kathryn and Legacy’s Waltz, Ellenore and Ryan’s Broadway (the only B’way I’ve ever liked on this show.), and Karen and Victor’s Tango, even though he creeps me out.

Even though it was fantastic, I think this couple is a shoe-in for bottom 3 because of the disasterous hip hop and they have (sadly in Karen’s case) consistently been in the bottom.

Also in the bottom: Noelle and Russell, then who? I think it should be Mollee and Nathan. But we’ll see. Every week I’ve done predictions I’m 2/3, I feel like tonight will be the same way. That last couple could be almost anyone.

Finalmente!

‘The Jay Leno Show’ fechou a noite da emissora com 4.9 milhões e 1.9 ponto.

‘So You Think You Can Dance’ da Fox fechou com 5.4 milhões e 2.1 ponto, queda de 13%.

A CW só exibiu reprise de suas séries.

I was overwhelmed last night when I found out it was already time for each couple to perform two dan

I was overwhelmed last night when I found out it was already time for each couple to perform two dances! More than that, I was disappointed that this is the last week that the couples as we know them will be together. This season is going by fast! I am going to miss Ashleigh/Jakob and Legacy/Kathryn most of all. But I think it’s safe to say that all four of them will make it into the top ten.

First Round

Ellenore & Ryan - Lindy Hop (Carla Heiney) – They looked like they were having fun, and so I had fun. But on some level, I still associate the lindy hop with weirdness. A few seasons ago wasn’t there a Lindy Hop contestant who got cut in Vegas who had an uncontrollable wink? This style is beaming with so many smiles and looks of surprise that it’s all a bit much.

Kathryn & Legacy – Jazz (Sonya Tayeh) – Oh my! We had to do a double take when Legacy crawled across the stage on his hands!!! He is crazy strong and coordinated. And this performance was all about him. Kathryn had some cute moments, but the choreography didn’t give her much more to do than give Legacy someone to play off of. He really shone in this one.

Karen & Victor - Argentine Tango (Tony Meredith & Melanie LaPatin) - They had better chemistry than I expected, but something about this dance was almost comical to me. It was just too serious. I have been sold on intense, serious tangos in past seasons, but it was like Victor and Karen were trying so hard to not crack a smile that they were about to bust! I was reminded of an old SNL parody of Calvin Klein’s Obsession ad, in which Jan Hooks is the spokesperson for Calvin Kleen disinfectant. What’s the connection? Well, everyone in the ad is uber-serious and dressed in high society clothes (as far as I can remember, anyway). So, you may have guessed that I am still not a fan of Karen or Victor.

Mollee & Nathan – Hip-Hop (Jamal Sims) - I was completely disinterested in this routine. Much of the blame for that falls on Jamal Sims. What was the purpose of bringing Alexander Graham Bell into hip hop? That was really a stretch.

Noelle & Russell – Samba (Tony Meredith & Melanie LaPatin) – I agree with Adam that these two were too nice during this performance. Too many smiles, not enough sexy. And why in the world did they make Russell wear that ridiculous v-top?! Noelle looked great, but I’m still just not picking up good vibes from her. Every week she lacks a connection with the audience.

Ashleigh & Jakob - Lyrical Jazz (Sonya Tayeh) – Oh, I just love them! I was amazed by their control and strength in the moments where they would hold a leg straight up in the air for what felt like forever, or where Jakob held Ashleigh and slowly lowered her from a hand stand position to the floor, while she meanwhile made it look easy to keep her legs in a diagonal position. I was also thrilled to see something different from Sonya. While I normally enjoy her herky jerky, spastic, weird routines, sometimes it feels like she’s relying on the same old tricks. So to see this light, flowing, beautiful dance was very refreshing. It was my favorite of the night.

Second Round

Ellenore & Ryan - Broadway (Spencer Liff) – Ryan’s role as the temptation of fame came across as a poor man’s version of Kupono’s evil addiction persona from last season. Other than looking devious and rolling his arms and hands around, he didn’t have much to do but give Ellenore someone to play off of. But then, I hardly noticed him because she was so good! She was perfect as a stiff, doll-like character, controlled by puppet master Ryan. She has an unusual style that has shone through in the past few weeks. I hope that she can hang around past this week, because I’m afraid these two performances won’t be memorable to the voting audience to keep them out of the bottom three.

Kathryn & Legacy - Viennese Waltz (Jean Marc and France Généreux) - This performance was very pretty. While Legacy stood out in their first performance, this one was all about Kathryn (well, except for Legacy being shirtless – couldn’t help but notice that). But it was clear that Legacy was fully invested in the performance, since he brought tears to his own eyes when it was over. I like the passion and dedication he has to dance and to the show.

Karen & Victor - Hip-Hop (Laurie Ann Gibson) - I really don’t remember much about this dance. My glimpses of recollection include the thought that Karen’s hot pink and black outfit didn’t fit the routine, and that this performance in no way, shape, or form moved any mountains! It didn’t even move an ant hill! In fact, it may have done just the opposite and pushed Karen and Victor further down into the valley of elimination. (Cue ominous music now…) Laurie Ann Gibson needs to step up her game and quite overhyping her routines, or the audience will roll their eyes every time she appears in the choreographer rotation.

Mollee & Nathan - Can Can (Tyce Diorio) - And so the show welcomed another new dance. I couldn’t help but think of Moulin Rouge, although this cheery, bubbly can can couldn’t have been further from the manic, sensual can can of that movie. That being said, I actually liked it. I’m still not a fan of Mollee, and her performance was just as “little girl playing dress up” as ever, but I thought Nathan finally came out of the shell he’s been hiding in for weeks. He actually looked like he was throwing caution to the wind and giving his all to this rather girly dance. It was a bonus that Tyce threw in Nathan’s trademark pirouetting. So yes, this was better than last season’s awkward Russian folkdance, by a long shot.

Noelle & Russell – Contemporary (Tyce Diorio) – I really wanted to like this one. It started off so beautifully, everything from the music to the movements. But then Tyce had to go and throw in actual paint. How distracting was that. It would have worked better if they had literally painted each other from the beginning, but since they only reached for the paint and smeared it on each other once, it felt too gimmicky. The weird paint thing took away some of my enjoyment from the performance, but I still liked it, and thought it was better than their first dance of the night.

Ashleigh & Jakob - Cha-Cha (Jean Marc and France Généreux) – This wasn’t the best cha cha I’d ever seen on the show, but it was certainly fun to watch Ashleigh in her element. This was the first time that Jacob looked a little out of place, but that’s probably more because he was basking in the light of Ashleigh’s ballroom glory. One thing’s for sure: this couple will be safe this week. As usual, they had the best performances of the top 12.

My Favorite Performances

Ashleigh and Jakob’s Lyrical Jazz

Ellenore and Ryan’s Broadway

Predicting the Bottom Three – In previous weeks, my predictions have usually been 2 out of 3 correct. I wonder if I’ll finally be 3 for 3 this time.

Karen and Victor

Mollee and Nathan

Russell and Noelle

Who Will Go Home? – Keeping in mind that the judges want to keep the most popular dancers around another week so they will be part of the top ten tour, the contestants who have drawn less attention are likely in the most danger tonight. If it were up to me, I’d send Mollee or Karen home over Noelle, but I think the judges are too in love with Mollee’s personality and Karen’s hips to send them home just yet. As for the guys, I’m a little nervous for Russell, but feel like it’s Victor’s time to go. Even if Ellenore and Ryan are in the bottom three, I think Ryan would be safe because the judges don’t want to break up the top ten draw of a married ballroom couple that are super cute.

Noelle

Victor

testing captions After the loss of star choreographer Mia Michaels, how lucky is “So You Think

testing captions

After the loss of star choreographer Mia Michaels, how lucky is “So You Think You Can Dance” to have Sonya Tayeh? Both of her routines ranked among the best of this season. But those weren’t the only highlights, and despite some really rough patches, this top 12 performance show really delivered.

The combination of Kathryn and Legacy, who have yet to make a wrong step all season, with Sonya’s best piece since “The Garden” made for an explosive performance. This really highlighted what my favorite couple does best, together and separately (that backwards crab walk!). I had to watch it again right away. They followed up with a Viennese waltz which more than made up for what it lacked in technique with a beautiful performance. It will be a real shame to see them go their separate ways next week, and I hope Nigel is wrong in saying that they might be in danger.

As for Sonya’s second routine, was there any doubt that Jakob would nail it? His partner Ashleigh once again surprised once again by keeping up with him every step of the way. I have a feeling we’ll be seeing this one again on the finale. For this couple’s second dance, Ashleigh was right at home turning in her best performance to date, while Jakob showed he could cha-cha with the best of them. I breathed a sigh of relief seeing this, after the sub-par samba from Russell and Noelle, and Mollee and Nathan’s monstrosity from two weeks ago.

Not to be outdone, Ryan and Ellenore brought the Lindy hop back in style after three long seasons, and despite some amazing “coffee grinders” (thanks for the terminology, Adam Shankman), it was nothing compared to their “Chicago”-inspired Broadway routine. The pair were perfectly in character and in sync, and Ellenore especially was a “rock star,” as Adam described her.

After having a tough time with that samba, Noelle and Russell ended the night on a better note thanks to a Tyce Diorio contemporary routine, which was a literal work of art (with paint and everything). Will this save them from the bottom three? All signs point to no.

Despite so many high points, the night certainly had its share of lows. Two more couples who aren’t strangers to the bottom three will likely return there: Karen and Victor, whose tango and hip-hop routines lacked chemistry, and Mollee and Nathan — though admittedly, their can-can was a lot of fun. On the other hand, a hip-hop routine based on Alexander Graham Bell? Seriously?

Do you agree with me on the bottom three? Are you jumping on board the Sonya train (not to be confused with the hot tamale train)? Which of these couples will you miss the most next week? Share your thoughts on video or in the comments below.

What a great night of performances! This is why I love this show–beautiful and artistic dances

What a great night of performances! This is why I love this show–beautiful and artistic dances that show you something you’d otherwise never see. We’re down to just six couples which means that 50% of them will be in the Bottom Three tonight. It also means that at this point they’re all such talented contestants that ‘likeability’ begins to outweigh performance when it comes to voting.

It’s a tough week to predict, but I’ll try. This week I’m going solely on whether or not I liked the performance, since technicalities are negligible. Here’s a scorecard for last night–1 point = liked the performance, 1/2 point = kind of liked it, 0 point = didn’t like it.

Ryan and Ellenore: 1 + .5 = 1.5

Legacy and Katheryn: 1 + 1 = 2

Victor and Karen: 1+ 0 = 1

Nathan and Mollee: .5 + 0 = .5

Noelle and Russell: .5 + 1 = 1.5

Ashleigh and Jakob: 1 + .5 = 1.5

Which puts Nathan and Mollee at the bottom (I am so bummed! after last week I was finally and completely in their corner, and this week I just didn’t like their stuff); Also Victor and Karen (I love this couple together though! I was so looking forward to seeing them dance together this week and their first number was wonderful); And a tie between 3 other couples in 3rd place. Hmmm…. See what I mean about this week being up for grabs?? I have no idea who will be ‘dancing for their life’ tonight and who will be here next week.

PS–Congratulations to Donny Osmond and Kym Johnson over at Dancing with the Stars, who won last night. I wasn’t watching this season but I did see the finale performances from Monday night and I was really impressed with Donny and Kym… and I am NOT a Donny Osmond fan. But I have to give credit where credit is due and he was highly entertaining and made you wanna get up and dance! I also have to praise Kym for her excellent choreography over all the seasons–I’ve always been a big Kym fan because she does such an excellent job of injecting personality into routines and creating themed routines that really work for her partner. She’s also great at making her partner look good, even if they’re not capable of doing as showy stuff as other contestants. She doesn’t do a bunch of fancy footwork around them, she creates a routine to make them shine, and she deserves this trophy! (also Donny

Apparently I am not the ONLY ONE WHO HATES MORON MOLLEE. From E!Online’s Watch with Kristen: F

Apparently I am not the ONLY ONE WHO HATES MORON MOLLEE. From E!Online’s Watch with Kristen:

Francesca in New York City: Is it just me or is the so-called “golden couple” Nathan and Mollee the most irritating twosome in the history of SYTYCD? The judges protected them unfairly last week, and I just don’t see the attraction!
I, myself, have absolutely no opinion on Nathan and Mollee, but you’re right that the judges do seem to favor them. We talked to exec producer Nigel Lythgoe last week and he told us, “We didn’t know why Mollee and Nathan were in the bottom three. I think there was a little backlash from last week and maybe Nathan’s [video] package where he made himself out to be the kid who always got whatever he wanted. They need to be very careful how they portray themselves.” What do you guys think? Are the judges deluded about Nathan and Mollee’s appeal? Was last week just a temporary “backlash” or do you not like those two in general?

See? No one likes being manipulated, and frankly, 1980s British Hair, you’ve been goading us into liking Moron Mollee Gray since LAST season. Tonight, we’re going to be forced to watch TWO dances per couple because they are incapable of just say, reducing the show’s running length. It’s also the last time they will perform as part of their original couplings, but I just hope Crazy Mary gets her drink on.

Ryan Di Lello & Ellenore Scott
Lindy Hop — Carla Heiney
I’ve Got to be a Rug Cutter — Boilermaker Jazz Band

The ever-so-adorable Ryan and Ellenore are going back to the days of post-war swing with their sweet-as-pie lindy hop. Both of them have the personalities to pull this off without it seeming forced or cheesy. Ellenore’s smile and Ryan’s overwhelming excitement to be doing something similar to his original style are both infectious. Bonus points for Ryan giving 110% with a hurt back.

YESSSSS! Sitting next to choreographer Carla Heiney is…SONYA FRAKING TAYEH!!! This may make up for Crazy Mary’s recent bout with slooooow boozing. 1980s British Hair freaks them out by saying he hated that…that they haven’t had the lindy hop on the show in three seasons. Ba-bum-bah.

I like Ryan and Ellenore. The kids are alright.

Legacy Perez & Kathryn McCormick
Jazz — SONYA FRAKING TAYEH!!!!!
So Deep — Hot Chip

Of course it’s going to be good. It’s SONYA FRAKING TAYEH!!! Oh how I adore this woman. I would bite any hand for you, Sonya Tayeh.

Sonya’s dances are always fantastic–sexy, great music, you name it. I also think she is acutely aware of the dancers’ strengths and plays up to them, for instance, letting Legacy show off his B-Boy-ness in a jazz routine. Kathryn is looking less and less like a child each week and for one instant, she almost looks like Katy Perry. Their chemistry is obvious. It doesn’t seem like work with these two. Excellent work, kiddos!

HA HA HA. What did Adam Shankman just say? He made the same observation. See? Me is smart. All the judges are agreeing with me tonight. Wow. Should I be scared?

Victor Smalley & Karen Hauer
Tango — Tony Meredith & Melanie Lapatin
Montserrat — Orquesta del Plata

Karen should have the chops to pull off a sexy tango. I’m not sure if Victor can hold a candle to her, as he is an excellent dancer, I’m just not buying the love story. Maybe its because he seems so young compared to her, or so gay? AND NO, I do not mean that in a bad way. Okay. So I guess the judges don’t agree with me anymore, but I know NOTHING about the tango, although I do know he has poise and stature. I wasn’t sensing the hot chemistry, though. Crazy Mary keeps drinking slow, but I suspect she agrees with me about Victor. Nigel believes Karen “has it” like Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, whom he just saw perform at the AMAs. Probably because she is oh, Latina. But I doubt Karen will ever fall on her ass.

Nathan Trasoras & Mollee Gray
Hip Hop — Jamal Sims
Ring-a-Ling — Black Eyed Peas

Nathan will miss Mollee’s laugh. Oh come on. Shoot me now. Jamal’s hip hop routine is all about the invention of the telephone. I also hate the Black Eyed Peas and nothing will make me believe Moron Mollee could invent anything but a new way to annoy the frak out of SYTYCD viewers everywhere. She also dances like she’s on a pom squad and its halftime at a high school basketball game. And then Nathan tried answering her butt.

Everytime this girl smiles, I want to slap her. I don’t care if she can do flips and shit. Nathan is less annoying than Mollee, and since he can dance hip hop, he’s obviously the stronger partner. He also split his pants. Pants splitting happens a lot on SYTYCD.

The judges are pretty much unimpressed, but they still lay it on thick. 1980s thinks they need more mature partners if they move on to next week. Hey, that may just highlight their obvious flaws even more so…but I really don’t want them in the Top 10. Why do these people want us to love these kids so much? WHY WHY WHY?

Noelle Marsh & Russell Ferguson
Samba — Tony Meredith & Melanie Lapatin
Hips Don’t Lie — Shakira

Of course Noelle will miss Russell, I am sensing a total CONNECTION with these two, aren’t you?

I love this song. I love Shakira. I’m starting to love Noelle and Russell. And look how much fun they’re having out there! It’s ADORABLE! Sure, it’s sexy, I suppose, but its just adorable watching the two of them. They’re so cute. Move them on to the Top 10!

Shankman picks up on what I was feeling…he just articulates it better, as he is Adam Shankman. Yes. Their samba was too sweet. But I think it was because they were having so much fun together. Maybe they’ll get dirty together after the show? Tomorrow night, Shakira will be on the show! 1980s British Hair needs Noelle to be more sexy like Shakira.

Ashleigh Di Lello & Jakob Karr
Lyrical Jazz — SONYA TAYEH!!!!
Time Flies — Lykke Li

Awwwwww. I’m gonna miss Ashleigh and Jakob as a couple, too! Perhaps my pain will be dulled by yet a second appearance of the Original Queen of Awesome, Sonya Tayeh. Oh, how I just love her. And I don’t really see how Jakob & Ashleigh could do bad–they’re both incredible dancers–and combined with a Sonya number means PERFECTION. Phenomenal. She’s really one of the few people who can do lyrical jazz without causing me to roll my eyes at least once.

The only bad thing Shankman can say is about Jakob’s pants. Yeah…poor guy. Those are pretty damn wretched. 1980s British Hair takes a moment to profess his love for Sonya Tayeh. Sonya gets all misty eyed and I almost do, too.

(Why is Luke Wilson doing commercials for Verizon? Why are they already playing commercials for nooooooo AMERICAN IDOL??)

ETA: I fell asleep last night after no longer having the energy to carry on with this two-hour show. So now I’m catching the rest before I watch tonight’s results show–which I’m sure will piss me off.

Ryan Di Lello & Ellenore Scott
Broadway — Spencer Liff
Razzle Dazzle — Chicago (Original Broadway Cast)

You guys are awesome. This routine was great. It was soooooo Broadway, more so than most “Broadway” I’ve seen on the show. I love that these two are getting props. Once again, Adam Shankman steals my line, but come on, Shankman, Ryan was pretty awesome, too. Crazy Mary calls Ellenore an “It Girl”.

Legacy Perez & Kathryn McCormick
Viennese Waltz — Tony Meredith & Melanie Lapatin
Your Guardian Angel — The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus

I’m starting to really like these two. Their chemistry is so sweet and Kathryn looks gorgeous. Sometimes I think as if B-Boy Legacy tries too hard, but hey, at least’s he’s trying. Legacy finishes the dance in tears…of hope. This will probably get him a few votes.

Victor Smalley & Karen Hauer
Hip Hop — Laurieann Gibson
Moving Mountains — Usher

The judges clearly sent Victor (and possibly Karen) to the guillotine. Could it have been more obvious.

OH MY FUCKING HELL. WHAT ARE THOSE OUTFITS???

Nathan Trasoras & Mollee Gray
The Can Can — Tyce Diorio

Some things should not be done, like the can can on SYTYCD and allowing Moron Mollee to talk. This girl is dumb as rocks. I’m sure they will be hailed as DARING and SUPERB and all sorts of other nonsense. No one likes Moron Mollee. And few care for Nathan anymore, mainly because she probably brings him down.

Noelle Marsh & Russell Ferguson
Contemporary — Tyce Diorio
A Case of You — Diana Krall

These two are great. Noelle, I want to believe you no longer hang out with Moron Mollee because I’m really starting to like you, and if you drop that dopey dense digbat, I will like you so much more. I love these two. I think they could have, as my mother would say, a love connection.

Ashleigh Di Lello & Jakob Karr
Cha Cha — Jean-Marc Généreux and France
Cha Cha Heels — Rosabel featuring Jeanine Tracy

Can these two DO any wrong? They’re fraking sick. Seriously sick. I love these two. Ashleigh pretty much gave Shakira a run for her money.
