1.5 oz Beeswax

1.5 oz Cocoa Butter

1.5 oz Coconut Oil

30 drops of your favorite essential oil

Soap Molds (your local craft store)

Don’t use beeswax in a block unless you like to grate. I’ve found the blocks to very hard and difficult to grate. Look for beeswax pellets. You can substitute your oil to an oil of your liking. I used peppermint essential oil.

Heat water for the double boiler. Once the water is boiling add beeswax, cocoa butter and coconut oil to melt on top of double boiler. Remove from heat and stir for 5 minutes. Add your essential oil and mix again. Pour into your soap molds and let it sit for 2 hours. Remove from molds and wrap in wax paper or plastic wrap. Use product on your knees and elbows or wherever you like. It may feel hard but the warmth of your skin gives it a nice glide.

*I don’t like having something I use out in the open so I would suggest purchasing lotion bar tubes to save your product from multiple handling and contamination.

This recipe made barely 3 bars and you can double the recipe. I used this recipe first because I wanted to see how it would turn out first.

Let me tell y’all a little story about my most recent project, but I have to back up to get wh

Let me tell y’all a little story about my most recent project, but I have to back up to get where I’m going, so stick with me. After having hair longer than my toddler is tall for the last twenty years or so, I decided enough was enough and got it cut. And when I mean cut, I mean cut. Like Samson and Delilah cut. Like enough for a new Cousin It wig. Like I cut off so much God would’ve accepted it as a substitute for Abraham’s circumcision. Okay, well, maybe that’s pushing it a bit far, but you get the picture. It’s a precious little pixie cut now, if I don’t say so myself.

Apparently, this new boy cut has brought about the desire to do other boy-things, as well, like play with power tools and wood. Now, that’s not to say women aren’t perfectly capable of using power tools with the best of them, but this woman isn’t. I’ve used power tools for exactly one project in my life, which was a chicken coop I built last summer for my tiny backyard flock, and let me tell you…that is one sad looking chicken coop. But it gets the job done. After only five pounds of wood screws, half a tube of Liquid Nails, and a gallon of caulk, those chickens are warm and cozy in this frigid south Louisiana winter. But I digress.

Over the holidays, I sold my first handmade soap. It was a pretty big deal, and a pretty big turning point for me. I’ve always been a wee bit crunchy, and I’ve always been a wee bit crafty. I used cloth diapers, made my own baby food, mixed my own household cleaners. I spend days making the kids’ birthday cakes – little fondant pigs and ducklings and chicks and sheep last year, pink caterpillars, purple toadstools, baby blue butterflies this year. But never before had someone expressed a desire to buy something I’d made. (Well, there was that one time when this freaky guy at WalMart wanted to buy my…ahem…services, but I don’t think that counts.) And yet, here was someone offering me money for soap I’d had a grand old time making at home. It wasn’t particularly special soap. I spent a fair amount of time on the project, simply because I was making so many of the little suckers, but I didn’t kill myself. It was melt and pour glycerin soap in simple molds. It was, however, vegan, entirely cruelty-free (unless you count me forcing Thing 1 to help or Thing 2 to watch Diego while I worked as cruelty), and inspired by my lovely husband. As a long-time vegan, he suffered with store-bought (decidedly not vegan) soap for years. As a vegetarian, I’d been suffering with it myself because a) there are bunnies in that soap (okay, maybe not bunnies, but definitely some big brown-eyed cows, maybe even ponies), b) because, come on…like I can find vegan soap in a town where I can’t buy Boca burgers or fresh asparagus, and c) despite the big bucks us teachers/grad students make, we can’t seem to afford LUSH bars at $8 a pop plus shipping. And then one day, it suddenly dawned on me: Make The Man Some Vegan Soap. And so I did.

During the holidays, I had another epiphany as I was trolling the stores for inexpensive but thoughtful gifts for Thing 1′s homeroom-art-dance-P.E.-science-computer-library-basket weaving-fly fishing teachers: Give Vegan Soap To The Teachers. (Okay, Thing 1 doesn’t take basket weaving or fly fishing, but she has a lot of freaking teachers.) What was I thinking wasting my money and time and patience and sanity fighting the crowds at Tar-jay for candles and orange-scented antibacterial hand cleanser? (Hey. Take it from a teacher. We love the antibacterial hand cleansers. Your kids are great, but they’re germy little suckers.) And so I did.

Fast forward a bit and one of those teachers is asking me to make some soap for her and…get this…offering to pay me for it. Pay me? You mean…you’re going to pay me to do something I love? Pay me to spend a few hours fiddling with essential oils and infusions? Dude. I am on it like chickens on a cricket. Fast forward a bit more and she’s telling me a local shopkeeper wants to chat with me about starting a local line of soaps for the spring. And so I did. Or am. Or something.

Which brings us back to the original point (sheesh…I promise, not all the entries will be this long): I can make soap. Cute, yummy-smelling, good-for-you, better-for-the-bunnies, cruelty-free soap, but I can not wield a power tool to save my life. My first attempt to make my own wooden soap mold with a built-in miter option – one that results in those nice, normally-shaped 4 oz. bars – was not a success. It looks so pathetic, I won’t even post a picture of it, especially since I broke the darned thing before I could finish it. (Probably because I was using two barstools as saw horses – don’t tell my husband.) Yes. I broke the mold.

Yesterday, though, I revisited the project with a new and improved plan. The main improvement lies in the fact that I actually bought new wood instead of using scrap lumber we had lying around the house. Who knew sitting in a stack outside near the carport for six months would make wood so uncooperative? (I’m told everyone but me knows this, actually.) Regardless, after two and a half hours, a few choice words, two splinters, and my husband’s infinite patience (it takes a lot of willpower to bite one’s tongue and hang out with the baby when one knows one could do it better in half the time), I built a wood soap mold with hinged sides for easy removal of a two-pound loaf of cold process soap. It looks like crap, but it’ll get the job done. Now, if my suppliers would ever ship my essential oils, micas, and 3D molds (especially those fleur de lis molds…I really need those now, thank you), we could get this show on the road.

I have a feeling there will be a lot of that, so bear with me.

It’s late, I’m tired, and I have a kid with what I suspect is a nasty stomach bug, so my apologies for not making this inaugural post as witty and entertaining as it should be. I’ll try harder. Tomorrow.

Tonight, I’ll simply say thanks for showing up. I’ve been in small-business-start-up-mode for a very short time, and already I can see my friends and loved ones getting that deer-in-the-headlights look we all came to know so well during President Bush’s time in office. That’s the way things are here. I start talking soap, and they get that God-help-us-she’s-starting-again look. That if-I-open-my-eyes-real-wide-maybe-she’ll-think-I’m-interested look. It’s somewhere between hypnosis and horror.

But for those of you who aren’t listening to me talk about this every. freaking. five. minutes. and are still interested in watching (and pointing and laughing, admit it) as I bumble through this, I’ll say it again: Bear with me. This business-launching stuff is hard. There are forms. (Lots of them.) And there is the IRS. (Grrr.) And there are suppliers who won’t ship my essential oils and Amazon sellers who won’t ship my holiday molds and Chambers of Commerce who won’t return my calls. (Grrr3.) And there is soap to make. (Yay!) Lots of it. Most of the bars will take six weeks to cure, but I hope to have some glycerin bars in local shops for the Mardi Gras season. I’ll be blogging about all of it here, including my complete failures, like my pathetic attempt at making a wooden soap mold made from scrap lumber, and my little successes, like my not-so-pathetic-but-still-pretty-ugly attempt at making a wooden soap mold from mostly-new lumber.

Hello! I’ve been bit on a stump lately. The ideas are flowing and the materials are here but I

Hello!
I’ve been bit on a stump lately. The ideas are flowing and the materials are here but I just can’t seem to buckle down to start some major soaping. I think I get too excited to do everything that is why I can’t focus. I did decide to do some soaping tonight because I had the house to myself. I wanted to play with the multi-cavity mold I had got off ebay by “planning” how to colour each detail but I think that’s a bit hard for me right now so I decided to switch over to the “cake” mold instead. Prior to all this(even before I ordered my materials), I had typed up a plan outlining the scents I wanted to try and the appearance of each scent. At that time, I was only really thinking of using the “cake” mold but with various layering techniques.

This is the first layer that was green. I thought I would have a huge problem with layering with no scale to measure out the levels but it actually worked out as my mold was semi-opaque. The rubbing alcohol definitely works real well with getting rid of the bubbles and the binding of the layers.

And here are the finished products. Quite cute, eh?! I think they turned out real well and would be sold in actual stores, I mean I would totally buy them. The green really does bother me. I think perhaps I put too much green pigment in it. I like that both soaps turned out well even though I unintentionally made the small one. I originally wanted 2 regular sized ones but I ran out of the dark part so I just let it be. I made these soaps using 1/2 lb of shea MP soap base, green and brown oxide pigment and Mint Chocolate Chip FO. I think I’m going to have to buy a notebook and some pencil crayons just to map out and be more organized when making my future soaps. Learn something everyday!

Hello!
As the title suggests, I am super happy and excited that my package has finally arrived! Everything that I ordered was packed real well in foam cushions and in excellent condition too! I am definitely satisfyed with my order with Bramble Berry and I definitely would LOVE to order from them again!

Here is the bulk part of my order. I got 5 different Fragrance Oils and a Vanilla Colour Stablelizer with a free sample(the mini bottle). I also got 6 ultramarine oxide colours and 2 lbs of shea butter soap. I am definitely pleased with the scents although I still have yet to really test them out in a soap and try them on my body. The colours seem a bit dull but I’m sure it’ll look real vibrant once mixed in with soap. I do, however, kinda wish I had ordered more base but I guess this will do for now.

I also got some basic molds from the site. The blue one is one of their popular molds for making strips and thin layers of soap. It’s made of silicone but with a different texture to make it more plyable and flexible. I also got one of their “cupcake” round molds so I can make pudding soap. Definitely very cute! I also like that these are incredibly good quality and in such bright colours for easy spotting.

This is the last item in my order and it is the Soapy Love book that is by the famous Soapy Love Queen herself! I love all her cute project especially the popsicle soaps and I definitely would LOVE to make her waffle soaps too. It seemed like a thin book but it’s actually a really good one with lots of high quality photos so I definetly would recommend this one if you’re looking for small projects to do!

So that is my order from Bramble Berry! I really can’t wait to get the ball rolling but there are still some things I need to buy before I start. It’s nothing really big but just a few tools like a spray bottle(for the alcohol) and some measuring gadgets. For now I think I’ll try the free pour method just to test out the scents and molds. I’m still writing the next part of The Soap Basics series so look out for the next one!

The title says it all.

This is an example of my “cake” molds.

Although these are smaller in size compared to the “cake” molds, I think these would be perfect for trio gifts.

I know I will probably get asked about these molds so I will take some time to talk about these. I got them off ebay for super cheap as they were actually posted as an auction instead of the normal “Buy It Now”. The bidding started at $0.99 and I was already going against 1 other bidder so it was already at $1. Since both auctions were going to end in 4 hours and it was already midnight(I highly doubt the other person would stay up that late to check), I put in a max bid of $9.99. And sure enough, I won both auctions at $2.99(blue) and $4.75(pink)! Both of these silicone molds are available on the ebay seller’s store for $15.99(blue) and $11.99(pink). Shipping was bit steep but it was well worth it considering I got both molds and it was coming from South Korea. So if you do spend a little time comparing prices and looking for major deals, you can surely score!

Another tip before you actually go ahead and bid/buy these molds on ebay is to calculate how many bars of soap you can make with the amount of base you have. It’s not neccessary but I felt it helped me in deciding and just KNOWING that this was the right mold for me. I calculated based on my order for 2 lbs of soap base.

1 lbs = 16 oz

Blue Mold: 16/2.8 oz( based on ebay description) = 5.7 x2(bases) = 10ish soaps.
So for the blue mold, I can get about 10 full soaps which is pretty good.

Pink Mold: 16/1 oz(based on ebay description) = 16(even though the mold can make 12)x2 = 32 soaps.
There is probably an easier way of calculating it but this works for me! =) I feel much reassured when I did this math before I bidded because I could be prepared for it.

I suppose I will post the seller here but I assure you that I am not sponsored by them or anything. I wish! As I said, I was lucky to spot these 2 auctions so I don’t know when they will have that same deal again.

Chawoorim(ebay store)

I hope that has given you some more ideas for soaping!

Hello! This is the continuation of The Soap Basics series I have started to write about. So after yo

Hello!
This is the continuation of The Soap Basics series I have started to write about. So after you have decided which process and base you are going with, you’ll have to consider what shape your soap will take form of.

You will probably need a couple of molds to make a variety and it’s really up to you how many you get. I would probably start with a mold that comes in a variety of designs but have a decent number per mold. Can you use any mold? Well, soap is somewhat like an ice cube when you think about it. It goes into the mold liquid and when it sets, it’s somewhat delicate to pop out. Silicone molds are definitely recommended but you can also use chocolate/candy/ice cube molds too. I have been using keywords like “silicone, ice candy chocolate molds” on ebay.

While there are a huge lot of variety of molds to choose from like characters, hearts, solids and 3D ones, it is important to not get too carried away. Afterall, all these supplies will add up in the end and you might spend more than you wanted originally. A tip is to buy molds that you can use more than once for a variety of different projects. For example, a basic square silicone mold can be easily made into a layer-cookie cutter project or rolled up into a sushi soap. It could even be cut into strips and pieces and used for toppings on other soaps! The possibilities are simply endless with such a simple yet useful mold. So be innovative and imagine what you could do with the molds you choose. But if you’re going for a solid bar definintely check out the wooden silicone molds that appear like boxes with lids on them.

There is one final option you can consider if you want to be VERY unique is by making your very own mold with silicone putty. The way it works is basically you wrap the putty around the object that you want to form your very own mold.

Another thing to consider before/after choosing your molds is what are you going to do with them? What is your vision? For example, my soaping project is all about yummy soaps and so I have put in an order for the standard circle mold, the square mold and then I also looked for some cute “cake” like molds on ebay. These molds can become very expensive between $2.99-$40. And remember, if you’re planning to sell your products, the amount of molds and supplies you buy to make it factors in it too!

That’s all for tonight! More fun tomorrow!!

Love,

Eliza

This blog series will take you through the process of making lye soap. I am making soap for dry ski

This blog series will take you through the process of making lye soap. I am making soap for dry skin. In order to make soap, you need the proper tools.

Soap making materials

I am following a recipe for basic hot process soap. This means that all the acidity of the lye is cooked out during the process. I made a few changes to the recipe. I am using an infusion of lavender flowers in place of water and apricot kernel oil instead of the oil asked for in the recipe.

Lavender infusion

This is the lavender infusion. I let the herb sit in boiled water for 30 minutes in order to get as much of the medicinal properties as possible. I then strained it and let it cool. After it cooled, I added the proportionate amount of lye and got:

I got my back-ordered lemongrass oil yesterday, and so decided to test-soap all three essential oils

I got my back-ordered lemongrass oil yesterday, and so decided to test-soap all three essential oils today. Left to right is Tea Tree, Patchouli, and Lemongrass. The little star sitting on top is a new ice cube tray mold I’m testing. I got 8 of them at Walmart for about a dollar each. I’m hoping the little soap will pop right out. I’m sure I’ll have to put it in the freezer for about 10 minutes first. I’d like to use these stars as embeds for Christmas and Holiday soaps, and also to decorate the tops of some of the specialty bars I do during the Christmas season.

I decided to go with some herbs scattered on top of these soaps, just for decoration. I’m not sure what color they’ll turn out. I’m betting the patchouli will be a deeper brown, but the tea tree and lemongrass will probably be a light tan color.

In the winter time I make up to four trays of soaps at a time and stack them on top of one another and then wrap the whole thing with blankets to insulate the soaps and force a gel. In this summer heat, I might actually have to put the tray into the freezer to keep it from getting too hot and bubbling, creating cracks in the surface of the soap.

The soap will change quite a bit by the time it cools and is ready to cut, which is normally in about 24 hours. I used the maximum amount of goats milk so I could separate the batch and put different essential oils into each one. Using less goats milk helps it cure faster, but it also sets up much quicker and you don’t have as much time to do a lot of fancy stuff or make separate logs of different varieties.

This mold is really neat because the middle dividers come out. Normally I pour the whole thing with one type of soap and then level it and then put the dividers in, separating into 3 logs. Each log makes 8 bars of cut soap about 6 to 7 oz each. The botton also comes off, which makes it a lot easier to get the soap out of the mold.

This mold comes from Kelsies Molds and is a custom design they call the “Vickie” mold. They have several different mold designs and sizes. Some even have dividers that divide each bar of soap into the exact same shape and size. You don’t even have to cut them at all. They are rather pricey, but are made very sturdy and will probably last as long as I want to make soap.

I still need to make a lot more soap, but I had to order more coconut oil. I go through that stuff pretty fast and buying it at Walmart is way to expensive! As soon as the coconut oil comes in I’m going to be doing a lavender/orange soap. I’ve mixed the essential oils up and use them in a spray bottle with water to wash with when I’m out trimming horses and it smells lovely.

Happy Friday!

Mold Market just released 8 new soap mold designs and GoPlanetEarth is stocking them all. Way cool stuff! I’ve just started working with these new molds to see what fun things can be done with them.

The polka dot mold is retro and the dots easily accept a duo-color pour. The doughnut mold has great potential and you can see that the options for decorating the finished doughnut soap are endless. It is poured in two pieces and the pieces are joined with clear melted soap.

The soft serve ice cream is the same size as a real cone, not only that, it is also offered as a “cone only” mold. You can join the two pieces and then place a scoop of soap frosting on time. I’ve already made the cone, and will be mixing up my soap frosting this week. I’m excited to see how it turns out.

If you want to take a peek at all the new mold releases, you can check them out here or visit www.GoPlanetEarth.com.
