One post .. two MGR events. Went to Wednesday’s ramble ( 21/10 ) in Weald Village in Kent. Due to the overcast, drizzly day didn’t realise that it was a return location, having done the Sunday version led by Brian, until arrival. Despite the conditions Bob led us round the countryside and back to the green where majority stayed for a lunch-time meal in the nearby pub that had new owners/look since the last ramble when closed. Yes I had a pint, sorry I’m an evening meal eater.

Went to another quiz night last night at The Sydney Arms in Chislehurst. The evening hosted as usual by Brian with his quiz book aided by Pauline who rang her bell ( actually’s Stephanie’s ) scoring the quiz. This time our team with some different faces outnumbered opponents Socialites, yes we came out victors 111-110. While answering everyone discovered I’m a bit of a Trekkie, watch Gok Wan with a fashion answer and know my celebs – perhaps due to my tweeting ?

The evening allowed Helen the chance to beat the postal strike by handing out some November programmes. My only sore point of the evening was a pint of Stella – £3.60 ( sorry highest I’ve paid ). No wonder pub trade is down due to supermarket offers.

Despite this minor moan, it was great fun & banter by all.

Church is an exclusive social club. There are a number of rules one must understand to participate.

Church is an exclusive social club. There are a number of rules one must understand to participate.

First, you need to be available on Sunday mornings or you can’t participate. This is a socialist structure. It depends on numbers and enslavement to exist. If members were able to attend on their convenience then the socialist structure could break down.

Second, you must be indoctrinated with loud drum beats, simplistic guitar arrangements, and mindless words. The repetition must motivate you to raise your hands in the air and bounce around. Closing your eyes is also acceptable as long as you are provoking an emotional response to the poor quality of music.

Third, you must never grow tired of hearing a sermon on the gospels. If you are ignorant to the fact that there are more than four gospels and Psalms you’ll find the repetitive sermon topics as liturgical as the music. Some one needs a sermon on the Lost Coins or rather Lost Books of the Bible and I’m not talking Paul’s letters.

Fourth, you must realize that the church wants you to give 15-30% of your earnings in some shape or form. They read books, attend seminars, and start campaigns to get more money from your pockets. Meanwhile, the average church regular only gives around 3%. So they wasted a fraction of that giving to buy the books, attend the seminars, and start the campaigns. That vicious cycle should comfort you.

Fifth, the exclusivity forms within the average church attendee an ego of superiority. When so many illogical people gather in one place a sort of proverbial king of the mountain occurs. One must be ready to fight for a pseudo title of intellectualism to be a part of this social club.

Sixth, you must make spawning a primary objective to join this club. God commands that we be fruitful and multiply. It was, but no longer, an unwritten rule that you must reproduce. The club has sucked all enjoyment out of sexual exchange in hopes that members will see sex as it was intended; a means of creating a litter. In this patriarchal club, the woman is only important if she chucks out a child or two.

Seventh, if you have children, then be prepared to except that your kid is worse than everyone else’s. There will always be one person who has read more Dobson, watched more Television, and attended more seminars on rearing their brood. Their kids will always be angels even when they are dealing crack behind the church. Take heart, these “angel’s” parents will get theirs when their kid ends up pregnant at age sixteen.

Eighth, you must respond well to guilt. While the gospels do little to teach us the power of guilt, there is still a strong adherence to this tactic of conversion. The guilt does not stop at conversion. You will feel culpable to give financially, sacrifice time, adhere to the mindless drone of those around you, and to extinguish all ideas of pleasure and joy.

Ninth, be comfortable with the fact that no one inside this club will treat you like a human being. Remember, the attendees are driven by their emotions. If you make them angry, then like a child, they will inflict that anger on you. The good news is that their age does not permit a school yard shuffle. Instead, they will gossip, lie, and cheat to return harm for harm until their emotions are appeased.

Tenth, be emotional. It should probably have been expressed earlier but you must emotionally respond to all things around you. All worship in the “contemporary” church club is designed for you to emotionally experience the abridged truth of scripture. Keeping a club member teetering on their emotions makes it easier to experience guilt. The club member’s emotional blinders prevent him or her from understanding and comprehending scripture on their own. An emotional member cannot critically think or realize the true majesty and joy of the Lord ensuring the longevity and high membership of the club. The club needs collective ignorance because individual intelligence will cause divisions and lower the size of the church.

Turned up late ( sorry ) for the midweek ramble starting off from The Tickled Trout pub in West Farleigh, Kent. Led by Christine and described correctly in the programme as “a fairly flat walk of between 3-4 miles over fields and along the Medway River”.

Last end April day was “a lovely sunny day” when a small group of us met up outside The Long Hop pub. This time leader Clive was well to lead a small group of us around the countryside on a grey overcast day. At a moderate pace I seemed to struggle at the back and stopped a few times to enjoy the scenery. Hey I live near a BR station I wanted to enjoy the country life.
Leaving the group to finish their meal and after my pint, I drove home as rain returned and a drenching at a supermarket stop.
Till the next one !

Bats, Bugs and Drunks

Miss Rita, the middle-aged woman at the desk next to mine, is asking personal questions. That’s something she does every night. I’m 22 years old and this is my first serious job since being discharged from the U. S. Army, two years ago. The inquiring Miss Rita and I are clerks in the Social Security Administration — I’m a new hire and she’s my trainer. We are working the 4:00 P. M. to 12:30 A. M. shift on the seventh floor of the Falconer Building at 414 Water Street in downtown Baltimore, two blocks from the harbor. The year is 1959, deep summer, and I’ve made a new friend.

The windows are open, three huge floor fans blowing at full power. If the temperature in the Falconer Building rises above 90 degrees, we’ll be sent home. This happens often during the day shift, less so after the sun goes down. Miss Rita and I sit in the cross-ventilation and flip SS-5 cards and scribble name and date-of-birth changes into huge metal-covered ledgers, delighted with each other’s company. (This photo of an actual Form SS-5 shows a Miss Apgar requesting that her name be changed to Mrs. Lake. Click images for larger views.)

The evening passes to the rhythm of turning pages: flip, flip, scribble, flip, flip, scribble, scribble, flip. Against the background of dirty brick walls scores of other clerks’ bend to the identical task. The oily aroma of Baltimore harbor wafts in the windows and, when the wind shifts, more pungent odors come from the nearby wholesale fish market. The whirring fans cool our necks and blow the occasional card from desk to floor — or out a window. The strange sound of bat wings flutter in one window and out another. There is a gentle rustling noise as rat’s forage for sandwich crumbs in waste baskets, and the buzzing of blood-sucking insects foraging for us.

At the moment, Miss Rita’s job is to introduce me to the mysteries of entry-level clerking in the Numerical Register Section of SSA — and, it seems, to trade work information for personal tidbits. With anyone else her intimate prying might be offensive, but, somehow — I guess because of her odd sense of humor — it’s just harmless fun. Miss Rita’s constant stream of chatter, spiced with sexy double meanings, makes the long evenings of repetitive work bearable. In fact, they are downright entertaining. Anyway, there is not much of a private life to expose — I ‘m still in the process of trying to develop one. Somehow I manage to keep Miss Rita interested by making up outrageous but plausible tales about my exploits. She seems to especially enjoy the lies (these days we might call them “creative non-fictions”) that I tell about the erotic adventures of my mother, a born-again Christian, who would have been shocked if she knew that her son used her straight-arrow life for creative inspiration. Perhaps Miss Rita identifies with my fictions because she and my mother are about the same age.

On my first night in the Falconer Building — one of several rental properties which comprise the original SSA headquarters — Miss Rita gives me the grand tour. She points out the freight elevator which, she says, I can use at peak load times during shift changes, when the passenger elevator is often overwhelmed. She shows me the stairs and mentions in passing that they are handy because the freight elevator only goes to the 5th floor. She doesn’t comment on the empty booze bottles in the stairwell, nor does she explain the sleeping drunk. Our “cafeteria” is located by the elevator door on the 4th floor, Miss Rita says. That is, at 9 o’clock each evening an old man gets off the elevator and stands there selling cold sandwiches out of a large cardboard box. Finally, Miss Rita gives me a booklet explaining what is expected in terms of production and conduct. The publication also has a small map showing the location of the men’s room and fire exits. I can use the restroom anytime, Miss Rita says, provided it isn’t too often. “Two often” and it will reflect in my “rating,” whatever that is.

The Falconer Building is clean, at least compared to the steel mill in which I had worked prior to this job, and there is even a bit of external entertainment. As we young male clerks arrive early for the evening shift, we often gather to watch strippers sunbathing on the low roof of the nearby Gayety Show Bar, the keystone of Baltimore’s infamous “Block” of sleazy nightclubs clustered nearby. When the women are up there relaxing between shows we all go a little crazy. The younger clerks in the Numerical Register Section — male and female — are friendly, and I am quickly drawn into a sort of loose-knit social club. After our shift finishes at 12:30 A. M., few of us want to go home to bed — we’re still too primed with youthful energy — so most nights a meeting is called for a party or card game at someone’s home or apartment. Or we go out on a sort of group date, which usually involves bar-hopping, the only form of entertainment available at that hour. Some nights we simply cruise the city and talk until dawn at an all night diner. Often, I drop into bed at first light or later, sleep until two in the afternoon, then get up to start the work/play cycle again. Some of my new friends have been living this way for several years, but the fun will last only a few months for me. I have “EOD’d” (Entered On Duty) at the end of an era. The whole of SSA’s scattered downtown headquarters is scheduled to consolidate in a modern complex in the western suburbs of Baltimore in January of 1960, only a few months hence.

Well before we leave the city, though, it comes to pass that my social life is greatly enriched as a direct result of information provided by Miss Rita. She tells me that a particular young lady, another Numerical Register clerk, is interested in me beyond mere friendship, and before long I am involved in my first “adult” relationship. I reward Miss Rita by continuing my stories, now more fact than fiction, and much more titillating than ever. I even expand the scope of the tales to include many of my young and ever-horny (at least in my telling) coworkers. And I notice that Miss Rita’s interest in our escapades become more intense the closer I stick to real life, which I take as a literary lesson. So as I become a better clerk, I also sharpen my narratives. Miss Rita especially likes to hear my juiced-up versions of our nocturnal forays to various “hillbilly” bars and other hotspots around town, and the house parties that follow into the wee hours, many of them ending in sleep overs. These stories require scant embellishment.

All of this happened a half century ago, late summer until the end of 1959. I spent 29 years with the Social Security Administration, taking an early retirement in 1988. Not long after the SSA headquarters moved to the suburbs, I realized that I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life flipping pages and scribbling in ledgers, so I took advantage of the Korean G. I. Bill and enrolled in evening art classes. That led to a temporary job in SSA’s drafting department, which in turn got me through what I called “the back door” of their large art department —where my first assignment was to help produce the original Medicare Handbook. Living and working in the suburbs was O. K., but I never again had an experience quite so rich in character or characters, or that made such an intense impression on me, as those early nights in downtown Baltimore, flipping SS-5 cards and trading punch lines with Miss Rita.

A much longer version of this personal essay was published in the October, 1978 issue of OASIS, a magazine distributed monthly to Social Security Administration employees nationwide.

First off, and I hate to start on a down note, but I want to apologize for the pizza fiasco. I know that some people didn’t get any pizza and for that I’m sorry. Brooklyn Boyz got a little swamped and weren’t able to keep up. Obviously, it didn’t work out as we had planned and if we ever try to do something like this again, we’ll do a better job of it.

Moving on, I want to thank everybody who is a part of the group. Without you, there is no Bay City After 6 so I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your support. The comments I’ve received, both via e-mail and in person, have been overwhelmingly positive. On top of it all, we’ve all been lucky enough to meet a lot of new and interesting people.

November Meet-Up: I look forward to seeing everybody each month and am already looking forward to the November Meet-Up, which is taking place on Wednesday, November 4th. As usual, it will be at Midland Street Jack’s from 6–9PM. Drink specials, live music, great conversation and good times.

October Recap: As for October’s event, pizza shortage aside, it was by far our best and biggest yet. Once again, a lot of new faces were mixed in with the crowd of regulars. What I like best is that I’m seeing people get together and the folks who have been coming for a few months (or more) have gone out of their way to talk to the newer people. I try to make the rounds each night, but never seem to make it to everybody so thanks BCA6 vets for your help.

We had a handful of giveaway items and I’d like to thank everyone who donated once again.
- Robert with Saginaw Bay Underwriters
- Diane with Financial Edge Credit Union
- Adam and Ryan with Sandlot Sports (they gave a LOT of stuff)
- Dave, Thad and Dan with Urban Laundry
- Bruce from Midland Street Jack’s
- Rachael from Sandy’s Floral
- Luke Russell from Edward Jones
- Me…from 989 Design and Bay City Tees

If it’s true that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then our group should be flattered because there are other groups who are picking up our model and running with it. In addition, there have been ongoing conversations about Midland After 6 and Saginaw After 6. So keep your ears and eyes open for more info.

Thanks for all of your support and I genuinely hope you are getting as much out of this as I am. If there is something different you would like to have us do, please do not hesitate to offer any suggestions and ideas you may have. This is your group, too, and I’d love to hear your thoughts.

The evening hosted by Brian with his quiz book who broke half-way for a long commercial break ( yes seats for his play ! ) and was aided by Pauline who fairly scored the quiz. Despite starting with less numbers than opponent Socialites, we came out victors 66-58.

A chance to meet some new members/faces and only Pam, whom I sat next to, was from the rambling/walk crowd. After leaving I finally remembered host Brian welcoming me at the New Members nights all those years ago at the Hayes Sports Club when previously joined.

Great fun & banter.

On leaving we headed along the canal to Camden Lock for lunch with lots of ethnic food stalls. As the loos were pointed out at the local Wetherspoon, I headed to The Iced Wharf and had a pint of Fosters shaded under a tree while the rest enjoyed the food of the busy market.

Around 2, we headed back down the canal and walked on to Little Venice with few stops along the way with zoo & object distractions. On arrival we found a barge cafe for refreshments. Then we split up with some heading back to the nearest tube station while the rest of us walked back to Regent’s Park to look at the pond life.

On exiting the park, we decided to find a quiet pub on a Friday evening, I suddenly became leader due to past memories of Marylebone High St, the 1st pub I remembered was packed inside & outside so we headed to a side road pub and found it near empty on arrival. After chat & drink we walked to Oxford Street for the next split while the remainder of us enjoyed the evening weather down Bond St, Piccadilly, St James, Haymarket & on to Trafalgar Square.

After a pause to watch the tourists, we walked around the top of St Martin’s Crypt and headed for Charing Cross Station. Where we split for our trains, due to a wait I headed for McDonald’s and then home.

Thanks to Sally and especially Pam for rekindling my West End memories – sorry for missing the start, having misread the meet-up instructions and waited outside Regent’s Park tube instead of Baker Street but luckily as you have read our paths crossed.
Walk on !

A chance to try out my cheap sat nav as I crossed the border to Surrey for another midweek ramble. This time around 20 met up outside the Carpenter’s Arms with Pam for a 3 to 4 mile walk around Limpsfield Chart.

After an interesting woodland walk we headed for the pub where the patient ramblers waited for their pre-ordered lunch-time meal while I sat with my Fosters in a nice leather chair having a chat with fellow drinkers.

Thanks for Pam for keeping everyone together.

After a couple of nearby Wednesday rambles in Pratt’s Bottom ( 09/09 ) and Badgers Mount ( 16/06 ) and a pop-in at The Portrait ( 13/09 – sorry I didn’t make my presence know ), I joined the MGR dozen on a boat trip from Westminster Pier up the Thames to Richmond. Meeting up with organisers Jan & Val, the boat departure time was delayed to 11:15 am. With the usual tourist boat commentary we passed some familar landmarks including the MI6 building – alas no sign of 007 and that black boat !

After a stop at Kew Gardens, we cruised up to Richmond via a surprise lock, enjoying the Friday sunshine we arrived around 1.00 pm to disembark.

We found one of the nearest pubs, The White Cross and everyone ordered a pub lunch except me as usual. After my pint, I left the group for a wander around Richmond and felt like a bit of a tourist in London ending up in the local HMV store.

Rejoining the group, we decided on a leisurely river walk down to Kew Bridge, losing two at the pub & two to the local tube station, the remaining 8 of us enjoyed the bright sunshine for a 2 mile wander avoiding the bank runners & cyclists.

Arriving in Kew, we decided to hit another pub by Kew Green, stop for tea and others for the usual pub drinks. After another sunny break we left to play find the tube station. Arriving after directions we all tubed back into London.

Everyone agreed that due to the weather that it was an enjoyable day out.

We wanted to let everyone know that our Groups notifications are up and running and about some of the great groups that members are joining and creating each day.

Our Share Interests section of the site is a really successful way to meet your kind of people in your city who are into the same kind of things as you are. Plus you can create your own group if there’s something that you’re into and want to find others into the same.

It’s free to join as many groups as you like and each day we’ll notify you (if you want) of new people joining and the new messages and replies posted to your groups so you can stay in the loop with the days and nights out being organised.

Some of our most popular groups in London out of around 80 – 100 different ones include:

Bars & Pubs group
If you want to meet new friends into after-work and weekend drinks and checking out new pubs and bars

Fitness & Sport group
To find a new gym buddy or set up a five-a-side footie team (which member Alex is trying to do at the moment – click here)

Meet an adventurous CS crowd for trips and holidays away (a weekend trip to Paris is being planned at the moment amongst other things)

And there are loads more new and quirky ones being added all the time so join as many that interest you, post a message to say hi and browse and say hi to the other members of each group. That’s all it takes to get started – it’s one of the best ways to get involved and the results will be worth it!
