According to this article at arstechnica, Microsoft’s new web-browser, Internet Explorer 8, is

According to this article at arstechnica, Microsoft’s new web-browser, Internet Explorer 8, is a much better browser…because it’s safer! And, it is. As an example,

Dean Hachamovitch, general manager of Internet Explorer, last week posted a story on the IEBlog about how IE8 managed to block a malicious webpage he was linked to by one of his close friends on Facebook. What we found more interesting though, was when Hachamovitch put this feature a bit more into perspective: “IE8’s SmartScreen now blocks malware sites over two million times a day.”

Plus, there is this earlier post I had made on a vulnerability under IE 6 and IE 7, where CSS retrieval triggered an attack.

It only makes sense that IE 8 would be more secure. It was built with security in mind. All those making fun of Microsoft notwithstanding, they do have a good engineers. It’s just that the company tends to follow than lead, so the perception (not undeserved) is that they’re slow. Security on-line has been an issue for some time now; the time is ripe for Microsoft to come out with a secure browser.

I’ve switched–a long time ago–and I’ve been pretty consistent with applying the patches as well. The only thing I’m not too crazy of is the fact that the new browser is slow as molasses, not only going from page to page, but also starting up, creating new tabs, etc…

But, security always requires some kind of trade off…sigh.

Gangsters will use Twitter to “trash talk rival gangs and plan attacks.“

That’s weird. Last time I checked, Twitter was “open.” Anyone can read anyone else’s tweets. On the other hand, why wouldn’t you coordinate attack on Twitter? After, altercations on-line spill over off-line as well:

A boy shot in the leg weeks earlier on Lenox Ave. may have been targeted because of a battle the Original Young Gangsters crew started on Twitter.

Another day, another fake page. PandaLabs, according to networkworld.com, has announced the existence of a doppelganger Facebook page that’s designed to steal your Facebook username and passwords.

…when web users try to log-in to their account, they will be presented with an error page. However, the information they did attempt to enter will go straight into the hands of the hackers.

Why is this a serious security issue?

Because it allows the would-be hackers to gain access to your account. It doesn’t sound a like a lot, but getting a base number of potential victims is the first step towards a successful hack.

For example, if you’ve got 200 friends in Facebook, the hackers could spam them as well, and get them to give their FB passwords. If each of them also have 200 friends, then a maximum of 40,000 people’s passwords have been collected.

Then, the hackers post message on their victims’ walls, directing others to a site that will automatically download a trojan into computers. Now you’ve got a situation where 40,000 or more people have an infected computer–which may return to hackers usernames and passwords to on-line bank accounts.

It should be old news by now, but if you noticed a bunch of red rings filling up your screen while using FaceBook, it doesn’t mean your account was hacked, or that you computer was infected with something!

Those rings are what’s called an “easter egg,” where a certain combination of of keyboard presses opens up a separate application. The way to trigger this is by logging into a FB account and pressing the following combo on your keyboard:

UP (arrow) UP (arrow) DOWN (arrow) DOWN (arrow) LEFT (arrow) RIGHT (arrow) LEFT (arrow) RIGHT (arrow) B A ENTER (key)

Yeah, it’s reminiscent of the game cheats from 15 years ago on Nintendo consoles.

The only way to get rid of it is to shut down the browser (or at least, the tab).

This blog over here notes that what happened once a person named Ben found the easter egg running without his knowledge:

The problem was that Ben initially panicked, and thought his computer had been virus-infected. Fortunately the culprit owned up before Ben took things into his own hands to “remove the virus” and possibly make things much worse.

And that’s the problem even with seemingly harmless pranks like this which don’t involve you installing software on someone else’s PC. You don’t know how they’re going to respond, and there’s always the danger that they might over-react and do some real damage.

Hm…never thought of it that way…although, what would the guy have done? Try to get rid of the “virus” with another virus? I guess he could have spent inordinate amount of money trying to fix a problem that didn’t exist….

Well, this doesn’t really come as a surprise. Apparently, FaceBook is making inroads into socialist Venezuela, and some less than scrupulous people are using it to plan crimes.

What they do is this:

They make on-line friends

On-line friends express desire to go traveling

On-line friends actually do go traveling

Thieves know their on-line friends are not home

Thieves rob on-line friends

With friends like these…

On the other hand, the police are also using FB to arrest criminals and “criminals,” the latter being political dissenters and the like.

Listorious. (http://listorious.com/)

Twitter’s new Lists feature allows anyone to curate the real time web. Listorious makes it easy to find the best lists of Twitter users on any given topic, and for list creator to publicize their lists.

This site was created using new Twitter List API. Thanks to the Twitter team for their support.

Listorious was created by Sawhorse Media in New York City. If you have comments or questions, please email hello at sawhorsemedia.com or contact us on Twitter at @sawhorse.

Follow @listorious for site news and updates about interesting lists.

Matt’s Take:

First off, I was really surprised this site was up and running as quick as it was. I feel like just a couple days ago, I heard about these new “Twitter” lists and then I heard about this site that was created to keep them all together and in one centralized area that people can search through the lists and also include their own lists, which they have created.

I’m also quite surprised that they have everything working as well as it does as well. Just from what I know about websites and website development, there’s about a 75% chance that a new website that I’m guessing was built rather quickly, would work as well as it does. I haven’t found anything yet that is messing it up and that is not working properly on there.

Overall, I think this is a great site, and I’m interested in seeing more sites like it pop up in the upcoming months. Although, Listorious is definitely a front-runner.

Rating: 4 out of 5 ( I )’s

This is one of the catchy phrases sang by Esteman in his new hit song “No te metas a mi Facebook” (Don’t go into my facebook). This colombian artist takes a trendy reality like Facebook and criticizes the new meaning of Friendship that the Social Atmosphere has given to the original significance of this relationship.

Esteman sings in a very catchy rhythm that “Out of 620 FRIENDS, you relate with 10, 90 unknown people plus 60 FRIEND requests”. He says that now, more than ever, you should apply the -rule- and put MAYBE to every event invitation, because its seems like everyone wants you to be everywhere and your life has become complicated trying to guess to which one of your FRIENDS invitations you should go.

Lets make this an Internet Meme and show everyone that even Social Media sites can be the subject of your thoughts.

Dropjack.

Just came across another site called dropjack.com. To be honest I can’t really tell that much of a difference between this and StumbleUpon, but makes me think that there’s got to be more new creative things out there, then to just copy something else that someone has already been doing. (Point in case..have you heard about Christian Chirp? http://christianchirp.com/…post about this tomorrow.)

In the “About” section of the site is has this very simple statement. “DropJack.com is a social content website powered by users like you.” Which I kinda like the idea of, but once again this is exactly what StumbleUpon is doing right now. The only difference I really see about this site, are that you can create groups of people with like interests. “Groups allow users to share articles with other members who share a common interest in a topic. Join a group to submit topical articles that other members would be interested in. Some groups may require membership approval before you become part of the group.” – dropjack.com

Overall, I probably won’t use this site much, as I’m just starting to get into StumbleUpon, but maybe once this things gets going a little, I may give it a try.

People often ask me why I chose to be on Facebook, Jacketflap and Twitter. They ask, Doesn’t it take away from your writing time?

I thought about it and realized . . . not really. I have feeds or are working on having feed from several different places connecting all my social media sites, so that one post fills several spots.

Twitter because of its 140 character limit forces me to tweak all my tweets (which makes me a tighter writer.) I use my Twitter tweets on my blog. My Facebook info shows up on my Tweetdeck. I use the urls that I enjoy from Twitter on my blog and send them to my critique groups as well. On Facebook, I share info that appears in my blog.

My biggest reason that I use various social media sites is the chance to get to know others that I would never in a million years be able to meet.

I have found writers and illustrators to be the most generous and supportive people anywhere.

From little things like a sweet comment made while in a social media presentation about my doodles, to being told I am doing what I should be doing to build my platform as a writer, to a pat on the back for helping another writer work out a dilemma (we met on Facebook) it makes me feel connected.

Jenn Bailey put it best when she offered five things that Twitter/Social Media site can do for a writer:

1. Social media sites amplify your message. Someone sees what you post and retweets it, or posts it on their blog, etc.

2. Social medias offer a writer unlimited connectivity. They are available 24/7.

3. Social media sites can be used to move a community into actions. For example, Cynthea Liu’s action this past year benefited a Oklahoma school district. She pulled on her contacts to make a real difference for some school kids. Congrats Cynthea and all others who give so generously. You rock!

4. Sites like Twitter (I mention Twitter because I am on Twitter) give a writer a platform for rapid visual messaging.

5. Having a presence on a social media site makes contacting you simple and brief. Quite simply, people know where to find you.

Before you decide not to consider one of the many media sites, consider what you might be missing.

If you get a chance to listen to a presentation by Jenn Bailey take it. She is full of . . . great info. Almost got you, didn’t I?

I stumbled upon an insightful little post today (thanks, Mashable) that illustrates the ratio between men and women, and their activities on the Social Web. The data from the October 3rd article was compiled by Google Ad Planner, and showcases the activity between males and females on a multitude of popular social media sites. I’m not surprised in the least bit by these results. It makes sense to me that both men and women are equal users within the YouTube and LinkedIn realms. There’s a definite gender balance at other social networking sites including deviantART and del.icio.us. I must admit that I’ve never heard of the first; however, I am an avid user of the latter. It’s definitely my favorite bookmarking service – I’ve posted a few of my favorite links on this blog if you would like to check them out!

But back to the Mashable article: It’s interesting that Digg encompasses the highest amount of male users. I have not yet spent enough time utilizing Digg to base any more judgment, so I can’t include a deeper response (or else I might dig myself a hole – pardon the pun). But every other site mentioned is handed to the girls! Women are very social creatures by nature, so it seems natural to see that they are participants within several popular social media sites. Their ruling presence in the digital space is becoming louder, now more than ever.
