I had a chance to meet the pandas, spend time close to them, see behind the tourist spots, how they are fed and talked to by human “parents”, how they are boosted with the media, talk to the local policeman, who in Chinese shared his experiences about Mao Zedong’s army in the 1970s, and finally got close to Westlife and see how they handle the Chinese craziness and folie of the people and media. The day could not have been any more strange and surprising in its contrasts, here I’ll share it all with you with some of the conclusions I got from the events.

Went there in the morning. Organized 2 hour-trip is NOT ENOUGH! I spent there 9-10 hours, could go for another day too.

Panda’s are great. They seem to recognize human beings and communicate with them. They were looking at me too and wondering about who I am.

Yesterday was in many ways an interesting journey. I think the Panda Breeding Center is not only about Pandas, but about wildlife and nature too. The roads and jungle-like green areas with bamboos and birds also create a nice feeling. Besides the dàxióngmäo, the Giant Panda, there was a more cat-looking red panda, the maoxiong, who got me amazed. They came very close and stared at me from 2-meters away. I got their attention by starting to sing in the end and there was a curious moment, when I didn’t know, what the small red panda was thinking, as it stared at me for over a minute without moving an inch…

The place IS touristic, but not as much as you might think. I think it is a good idea to in a limited way show people some glimpse of the world-famous and beloved panda figures. Still I think they are mostly left in peace and unharassed by the tourists. Also the important work for keeping the panda herds alive needs public and private support; that work is helped by the awareness of what these animals are. So I think a limited way to highlight them and show them to tourists is to be encouraged.

CURIOUS AND THOUGHT-PROVOKING DISCUSSIONS AT PANDA CENTER

I met at the center some highly interesting people and had some mind-provoking discussions with them.

AN INDIAN GENTLEMAN

Got himself photographed with the baby panda for 1300 RMB, enjoyed it very much. Said:

The baby pandas are like children, soft and want your attention and love. There was a strong connection with the baby panda.

A history buff, we discussed about historical narratives and highlighting:

Vasco da Gama cruelly assassinated the whole court of an Indian province he headed into in his travels. Not much discussed about in our history lessons.

Or that “Boxer rebellion” in Chinese is not a rebellion, but named more like a ‘fight for taking foreigners out’.

THE CANADIAN “QUEBECOISE”, SOPHIE

Canadian French seem to have many similar experiences than the Finnish Swedes. Living as minority in a country ruled by majority who possess a different historical and cultural background and language, which is close to theirs, but still doesn’t share fully the same national identity as the other… Interesting stories about how Canadians react to her. As a young teenager, they acted as not to understand the English-speaking seller in Montreal, but instead gave a paper with something like: “I am Francophone, if no French, no business”. And ran away…! The Chinese-American travel mate’s solution to this same question in Finland was: Why don’t you all guys just speak English and it would be so much easier! A funny and curious point…

Li ZhengQiang – A CHINESE POLICE GUARDING THE PANDA CENTER

This was perhaps the most giving discussion in terms of what the Chinese themselves think about their nation. Li, much +50 year old, though in good shape of a guard, warm in character, friendly, but apparently decisive by nature, talked with me for about 25 minutes. Li couldn’t speak any English, so the conversation was held in Chinese. I can already follow a discussion and talk about minor issues, and with some limits even deeper subjects. I understand about 60 % of what is discussed, sometimes all of the words and phrases, sometimes an expression is too difficult and I have to ask to repeat. If one very crucial word still was not understood, you can always take the Pleco and ask a person to draw the character. This was like when Li asked me, after my 5 months in China, do I now see China as more of a qiangda, or not? I asked him to draw, and qiáng (2nd tone) appeared to be an adjective for great, powerful, ruling… So do I now see China as more or less of a great, powerful country? I answered, that it is a powerful nation with a great history, and is rising strongly, but has problem, which is a connection to its past, which is afraid to be lost, as the vast majority seems to focus on business growth and taking a leap away from its past, rather than trying to grow also the culture, not just finance. Something like this. (I told it was based on my discussions with other Chinese students.)

But Li also revealed many other fascinating details from his past. As the military helicopters were flying over the Panda Center, on their way to somewhere god only knows, he confirmed that they were military copters, on a training session. He asked about Finnish military service and I told I had been in the conscript army for a year.

Li: Do you have to go to military?
Nimen bi xu qu dangbing?
- : Dui, women bi xu qu. Wo zai dangbing yi nian.

-: Ni ne? Ni ye zai dangbing yiqian?
Li: Duo, wo yi qian zai dangbing.
-: Duoshao nian ni zai dangbing?
Li: Sige nian.
-: Oh! Shenme shihou?
Li: 1973.

And so on….

Li told me that, China was at that time very very different. When he attended the military service in 1973, they were training with older guns and shooting without ear shelters. The rare holiday ride back home could take up to 4 days.

Nowadays the soldiers have much more equipment and more comfortable service. Before they were given 6 RMB in one month for salary! (Basically nothing…) Also their journey for the Spring Festival back home (one of the rare vacations) which could take up to 4 days was taken in very uncomfortable conditions.

But Li took it all with a smile, even though you could feel that he had been going too harsh times with the things he talked about.

I also asked about him, how he feels the present China.

Which one was more important for China: Mao Zedong or Deng Xiaoping?

I got an interesting answer, with a well-argued following. They both were. This was what the former soldier and policeman, who had personally gone through the cultural revolution, seen the Mao era, and witnessed all of the modernization programs since the opening-up policy.

You cannot say either one of them as more important. Mao Zedong unified China and built up the basis. He got sick from his mind, but still created a strong basis for the followers. Then Deng Xiaoping has his opening-up (kaifang) policy, which made China rich and powerful and China opened up more to the world. So the both are important. There would be no Deng Xiaoping without the basis Mao and his era created. Mao created the New China and fought the Japanese, but Deng opened China up and brought wealth and took the development further.

Interesting comments. I could pick it up quite well. There is of course a possibility that some points I misinterpret, but basically I think I could much follow what he discussed about China.

ON WESTERN CHINA JOURNALISTS

Then let’s think about all those Western journalists, who come to report from China and about their own and about Chinese feelings and experiences. How much better a starting point do they have, if they can personally – at least some – connect with the locals in Chinese language? How much does the situation differ, if the knowledge is created by using the other (usually Western) media personnel or at the best some interpreted interviews for an article? How well a picture is drawn with these elements? How does it alter the situation of interview, if you have an interpreter there, if you instead do your own individual work and personally discuss with the persons? Would i.e. Li in this case told all of the details with the same interest, commitment and trust as he did with me, if I had first of told that this would be an official interview, or that I would be there with an interpret? So as to underline:

I think EVERY major Western or any journalist as a magazine’s main reporter should be a person who well knows Chinese language. This should be a top definition for any self-respecting newspaper.

A BEHIND-THE-SCENES PANDA FEEDING SESSION

I also met the center personnel, whose job is to take care of the pandas and feed them. One guy, came to the field at 6 o’clock, when most of the visitors had already gone, and I was alone with 7 teenager giant pandas and their mother, and he shouted loudly: “GUO LAI! GUO LAI!” (Come here, come here!) And all the pandas in a second started to come towards him and made these strange whale-like panda sounds. He just greeted them and probably made them to know, that it’s he who is present. Then he went to the back and called them again inside to feed them. They came and he fed them with a special system. Putting them in to the cages of two by luring them with food to other parts of the bigger cage, then closing the pathways and giving them food. First some white milk-like drink, then opened the smaller cage fences again and lured them with a big cookie-like dish (probably some meat or pressed vegetables?). Then they were fed, and he all the time called them very loudly by their name. The giant pandas knew him well and recognized his calling voice and made a loud voice themselves. You can imagine 7 to 8 giant pandas, most of them teenagers, making loud voices and putting their noses to the fence for given special food. (Normally they eat bamboos, which is about over 90 % of their diet. And that is to be eaten a lot, as a giant panda may weigh up to 100 kilos.)

In the end I met the smaller red pandas, a more like a cat or ‘majava’ (in finnish) type animals. They had resemblances to giant pandas, but also to many other animals. If these are the old ancient animals, you can only wonder, how were the cats and wolves, the deer and bears developed during the centuries? I might have got a glimpse of why Charles Darwin wanted to spend so much time on Galapagos islands.

STRANGE WESTLIFE PUMP-UP

In the end I returned back as a late visitor – and ended in the most strange an unexpected situation. After this defining experience in the Panda Center, flirting with the mother nature and going through something very “archaic” I think and a typical Chinese spot of interest, I end up in the public outdoor press conference of the world-famous pop group Westlife. What the hell….!?

And how did these Irish (aren’t they?) guys manage in the middle of the Chinese carnival folie? Quite well, but they seemed to be very confused of it all. Chinese people shouting and hosts translating a weard language in front of them, people bringing panda-hats for them, giving official gifts from the city of Chengdu and so on… The black haired stronger guy of the band almost dropped the official gift plate, but bought it on the air and ashamed of it with a smile and… it was like a messy carnival. A Westerners’ pr conference in the most strangest Chinese environment with crazy shouting fans. After the occasion they were all taken to the black cars and driven fast away from the waving fans.

The situation was so unexpectable that I felt like to try to get something out from it. I went in to the crowds after and discussed with the people creating the show. One of the beautiful women on the stage with Westlife, I had already seen in her bizarre Asian over-spectacular dragon dress watching teenager pandas. Another I talked with, a photographer, who spoke quite a good English. We though discussed in Chinese, and some adding in English. We got almost overrun, when the spear of the guards took the last celebrity to his black cars, a very well-known local Sichuan singer, who has got a big name in China too. He had his black glasses on and was surrounded by photographers, fans, and the determined personal guards. Really strange contrast to the last 10 hours I had just been witnessing with the pandas… It felt a little like when I was walking on a duty-free evening in Tchadian military camp on my service in Abeche in 2008. I had just been looking into the moon and been thinking about home, life, nature, and these sort of broader things, which often are the ones that in the end truly matter. And then seen the Swedish colleagues watching at their corner under a full moon a famous clip from Sascha Baron Cohen’s Ali G show, where David and Victoria Beckham are interviewedand all have so good a laugh – in the TV screen and in the crowds.

I felt like the Westlife and Beckham’s were sort of in an equally challenging situation. Their laughter and “joy” was probably real, but it was in a limited context, where they would practically have no other option. To be able to do the thing, they really like, they have to take part in these “spectacles” which are probably not boring or painful to do, but which doesn’t allow them to show all their feelings, but instead make them perform their expected role, which make people happy – and to come to their concert or support the thing they do. La societe du spectacle, indeed. Think about if the Beckhams would not laugh at the Ali G jokes, or would not have good time? How would they be seen? How would it influence their public image? And limit their space to do what they like? Maybe the publicity is positive for them, more than negative. But what if they would not act on the way it wishes? What if all the interest and the buzz would start to turn against them? What would happen? Think about princess Diana for instead? Or Michael Jackson? Or…. Dominique Strauss-Kahn? Or anyone else who is a well-known public figure.

What if the Westlife members would have been there giving comments like “I don’t think the panda is such a big thing”, or that “China is a depressing place” or that “Actually I like it in here, but this buzz is just tiring, I would just like to chill-out and play some guitar and have beer instead of this crazy megabaloo”. Of course they can’t. They are just playing their part like Jim Carrey’s portrayed Andy Kaufman in ‘Man on the Moon’, still remember?

The small occasion raises many questions about our life in general. What is in the end possible in these strange times? What is real and what is not? How to live a good life? What is a good life? Is it possible to live anymore? Or how to live it in these circumstances? These topic comes so close to me and is a bit sensitive as I also once thought about a career of an actor or theatre or music artist. And I’ve seen dozens of my friends going through that experience, also today. I’ve also been there in the middle of this media buzz, i.e. in the core of Eurovision song contest in Helsinki five years ago, or earlier and later as a live sports commentator for Finnish television. I have seen and experiences it from close hand. Human experiences are sometimes linked on an interesting way and we all have our pasts, which make us what we are and how we see and look at things. My yesterday at Panda Breeding Center was witnessed and discovered through these previous experienced, which have made me what I am. We all experience things on our own way. I guess there are no two similar run-throughs in the Panda Park, but this one was mine. Thank you pandas and other living creatures who made my day in its all curiosity and bizarreness.

P.P.S. I also met with the Chinese TV staff, who took me back to Chengdu center, to Tianfu Guangcheng (main square, above). They said, that they had been studying media, or journalism for 4 year, some an additional 3 years to that, and are now doing their “dream job”. But also they were some pretty tired for sometimes working too much (one also would have like to go to the Westlife gig today, but cannot because of the “damned” work restrictions). Also their perception was that the West has a “free” media expression, but China’s is carefully reviewed and monitored. They said that to work as journalist in China is pretty tough indeed. You need to think what to say carefully, if you want to avoid problems. On the other hand working in the entertainment journalism is slightly easier, as government won’t be interested about Westlife concerts as much as heavier politically attached issues. But also they need to think what to write. They can basically say whatever they like, but if one of the band members would in example say that he doesn’t like pandas, or the way they are treated, or something else about China, they couldn’t publish that. That would be an issue, which would be politicized. I said that it’s not that simple in the West either. A girl said “really”, but a guy agreed. I was wondering that if you write about politically less correct things, they are okay as long as they go in to the lines of everyday political bashing etc. but if you truly criticize the system you might get into trouble. I guess many of the more critical radio-hosts, or totally critical activists have had to witness that. This is though not always carefully discussed. Manuel Castells brilliantly outlined a few years ago (2006), as I remember:

“The power of media is not in what that it shows and tells, but in its ability to silence to death.”

This is good to remember. Even though China has visible problems in its media broadcasting, we shouldn’t be blinded to death to witness them in our own background. It’s always easy to point a finger outside to show an even dirtier backyard, if your own was in a need of careful reorganizing or cleaning.

C’était pas un poème érotique et le gars n’était pas un pouet’. Vous en faites pas, je sais faire la différence, quand même…

Le monde, surtout internautique, est plus cruel que vous ne pensez, pour les petite pépètes qui se dévoilent. Plus je me dévoile, plus je dois muscler mon maniement du bâton, sinon je risque gros, vous savez. – [J'ai de vrais ennemis sur le net, moi.]

Je parle des œuvres d’art représentées. Vous êtes jeune. Vous montrez de belles choses mais un peu surannées, je trouve. Vous habitez Paris tout de même. Il y a des squats, il y a des galeries, des centres d’art, des ateliers où il se passe des choses aujourd’hui même. Montrez-les nous.

Je viens de regarder un peu plus les photos de votre profil. Il y a effectivement quelques œuvres contemporaines. Toutefois, vous n’avez pas l’air de beaucoup apprécier l’art contemporain, ce que je peux comprendre. Toutefois, nous vivons aujourd’hui et des choses intéressantes sont tout de même proposés ici et là.

Ma poi c’è un fenomeno nuovo, specifico su cui non c’è ancora molta letteratura DIRETTA, ma buoni spunti di analisi si: ci si gasa 1 casino in 100 a vedere una tappa di ciclismo sullo stesso pezzo di rete, come essere una sporca dozzina su una porno webcam (vedo che conoscete l’argomento, direbbe S. Daniele). Figuriamoci in 120.000 a condividere 2 hashtag in forma ipercompatta; e – qui sta il punto rispetto ad una folla, orda, sciame old fashion – non è solo un fatto mimetico à la Girard, sennò saremmo ancora nella mass culture del XX che rigettiamo: no, è chiaramente diverso. Non la facciamo lunga, perché qui siamo al cuore del FOCUS di questo blog: cosa sono gli Oceani Sociali,  con le loro maree,  onde e popolazioni. Ne riparleremo spesso.

E non ce lo dimenticheremo facilmente: c’è piaciuto! Come una terza fase anale…? 8)

Se pueden destrozar por completo los postulados de esta pseudo ideología filosófica, muchos pueden criticarlos e incluso tacharlos de “incoherencias” y “divagaciones”… Pero en el fondo creo que eso es precisamente lo que buscaba Guy Debord con el situacionismo: provocar reacciones. No importa qué tipo de reacciones, sino que se provoquen impresiones, que se levanten opiniones, que se despierte el debate. Vive le situacionisme, aunque se niegue en sí mismo y promulgue la idealización. Soñemos un poco, no? No tenemos ni idea de qué trata esta larga historia que presenciamos en primera persona y que llamamos vida. Propongo que soñemos, y quien no quiera soñar, que permanezca en el espectáculo…

En fin, que todo esto es para deciros que mi pequeño détournement es volver a escribir en este blog. Os espero por aquí
