Late night post I know but I felt the wierd things that are Toe Socks deserved a mention.

I once owned a pair of red and black striped ones (dennis the menace style). They have since gone missing, possibly stolen for how cool they made me look?

Described by a friend earlier as,

“making her toes feel tingly and odd”

I agreed with the feelings but mentioned that I wasn’t convinced they actually did guys sizes, and it was a unisex version I had once owned.

How little I knew.

There is a larger supply of mens toe socks than I realised for instance here where there is whole pages of mens toe socks.

Tonight I learnt something.

Tell me what you think and whether toe socks make your feet tingle too?

I’m not much of a gambler, but at $8.60, how wrong could I be about this yarn? It’s from the Deborah Norville collection, Serenity Sock Weight, and is 50% wool, 25% bamboo, 25% nylon. Hobby Lobby had it for $4.29 a 50 gram/230 yard skein.

Now that I’ve finished a pair of simple socks, I can report that it was a very satisfactory knit. Neither skein had any knots. The color printing was predictable and accurate across the skeins. I was able to start each cuff at the same place in the color repeat, and then have identical heels and gussets. There was no pooling at all. The only variation occurred as I tapered the second toe, but by then, who cares? The socks are soft and comfy, and knitting them as my “purse knitting” was a mindless pleasure.

What, you didn’t think I could manage a finished object photo shoot without Meezer assistance, did you? Minky managed to come supervise this picture. As I look at her picture, I’m struck by how much the prolonged use of high-dose steroids to manage her asthma has lightened her back legs and tail. However, her medicines have kept her out of distress and happy. Minky is my companion cat, and she will always be my beauty!

I love “giving back” stories about kids. You might know that. The blogging team here definitely knows it. In fact, I learned about my story for today from fellow blogger Anis, who passed it on to me because she knows I like that kind of post.

Today’s story starts with socks. How often do you think about socks? Shoes are a big deal for some people, but I don’t think most think much about socks. I don’t. At least, not until we don’t have them, and then suddenly socks matter. And unfortunately, socks matter to a lot of people living on the street or living in shelters. When is the last time you went past a homeless person and looked to see if they had any socks? I confess I don’t do that either.

But Hannah did.

In 2004, Hannah was four years old and volunteering with her mother at a Thanksgiving dinner for the needy. Hannah noticed a man whose split shoes revealed his lack of socks, and she was concerned that his feet would be cold. Her mother, not wanting her to worry, assured her that he’d be fine with his shoes. Unconvinced, Hannah suggested that he could have her socks.

The next day, Hannah and her mother started buying and giving out socks at local shelters. Since then, more than 150,000 pairs of socks have been given through Hannah’s Socks.

My favorite part of this story is the simplicity of Hannah’s offer. Adults get tangled up in the practicalities, the ramifications, the details. I do that. Everyone at the meal was busy serving food, how would you get socks at that moment, a four-year-old’s socks wouldn’t help a grown man much anyway, of course she needed them herself…and cutting through all of that was a child’s simple, profound view. Someone needed help, and she wanted to help.

And you can help too. This year, Hannah’s Socks has a goal of giving 60,000 pairs of socks. They’re approaching 52,000 right now. Needless to say, that’s a lot of socks. And you can help them give more. Find out how you can send socks, or donate to help them spread their reach. Don’t get tangled up in the practicalities of it. Just do it. While I don’t normally believe in trumpeting my own charitable activities, I think this time it’s appropriate to note that…I did. And I got a very nice email back from Hannah and her mother, thanking me for the donation. Try it yourself and see.

Thank you for well-wishes everybody! Penicillin is a wonderful thing. I am back to work today, though planning to be very relaxed, and possibly go home early if I’m feeling too tired.

I didn’t get much knitting done Sunday or Monday, what with having no brain available at all, but yesterday I slouched on the beanbag with a long-neglected UFO – my Mermaid sock. I pulled out the waste yarn and knit the garter short-row heel (no idea why I didn’t do it at the time), finished the spiral (and very groovy) toe, then grafted the heel back to the sole (I really should have picked a different heel to do, but hey – sinus-junk-brain is not an effective decision-maker). It looks pretty cool, and is very very stretchy. I stayed up a bit later than I should have to cast on the second, have done the wavy bit at the top (very quiet at lunch today) and have just started the pattern. (up-to-date pics when I’m not knackered – flickr informs me that this pic is two years old!!)

The stitch pattern is the Estonian Fishtail, from Lucy Neatby’s Cool Socks, Warm Feet. It really is amazingly stretchy, plus does such funky things with striping yarn!

As I am finishing this post after 9pm, I can tell you that any plans to leave work early were stymied, but by good things. I had a good day, treated myself to a new long KPro cable and some 2.5mm dpns – must be my fave size, I keep running out – picked up girls and came home for a cuppa. The MOMD came home and said the girls had to come to dancing practice with him, so they went off at 6. DS was at cricket. I finished my cuppa and went to bed for a good 1 1/2 hr kip, which I obviously needed! I am feeling tired but not ill – definitely mending. Which is good because I have lots of knitting to do. And a book-prize-buying day on Friday. And a Christmas party on Fri night. And the dance concert on Sunday. (Crunch time says the MOMD). Then the madness of next week, including Speech Night Thurs. Relapse is Not An Option.

PS I carried my sock around in the very delightful sock bag given to me by the incredibly delightful Cindy 2paw. I still loves it.

According to my mother, things I need from Japan include knitted socks with froggies on them. The best part is that when I called to thank her, she asked me about the socks so matter-a-factly. Like, the idea of a 28 year old girl wearing these booties adorned with stuffed frog heads was no big deal. Her reasoning was that they’ve got the non-slip pads on the bottom of them, so they’re really useful.

Thanks, Mommy.

So it would seem I’m totally stalking Kirsten Kapur. Have you seen Katinka? I know I only just cast on her Mystery Socks ‘09 last night, and I’ve already planned on casting on a cowl project tomorrow on our road trip to KC for Thanksgiving, but I might have to dig around the stash for something appropriate and bring the necessary accoutrement for these as well. Limiting myself the number of WIPs I have going? Feh!

Rather than going for two pictureless posts back-to-back, I leave you with my rather inauspicious start to the Mystery Socks ‘09. I say inauspicious because there were numerous false starts. My only pair of US2/2.75mm are in use in the Gridiron socks, and besides that, after knitting the Gentleman’s Fancy Socks, I think I prefer smaller needles for my socks. So I first tried the Medium size on US1/2.25mm. I didn’t get past the first row before a lightbulb went off, and I figured they’d be way way too small. Rip!

Then I thought I was being smart, and checked out what needles and the number of stitches cast on for the Fancy Socks. Okay, US1/2.25mm with a cast on of 80 stitches. The Large size calls for 72 stitches. I thought that might work, since there was a little bit of give to the cuff of the Fancy Socks (I had them on, so I was able to check). I merrily cast on, worked the first part of the ribbing and got to the good stuff when I eyed my work suspiciously. Looked pretty small. I tried it on. I was able to get it on, but barely. I knew I wouldn’t be able to comfortably knit on; I’d be worrying and fretting the whole time, which really kills a good knit.

So I dug around for another pair of socks that I really like the fit of, my Sunshine socks. Reviewing my project notes (Hooray for Ravelry!) and the pattern (from the much loved and celebrated Sock Innovation), I discovered I used a US1.5/2.5mm needle and a cast on of 60 stitches. The Medium size calls for 64 stitches, so after all that, here I am:

I really hope this one works out.

What is a pet peeve, you may wonder? A pet peeve is a minor annoyance that can instill extreme frustration in an individual. In other words, something so simple that it can irritate the sh*t out of you.

Below are Hottywood’s TOP 20 PET PEEVES. Beware. If you’re caught in the hills of Hottywood violating anything on the pet peeves list, be prepared to get your ass kicked something good!

HOTTYWOOD’S TOP 20 PET PEEVES:

__________________________________________________________

So there you have it, people! Hottywood’s Top 20 Pet Peeves. Please don’t get caught with your tail between your legs attempting to violate any of the above mentioned crimes. Because if someone catches you, they are liable to tie you to a tree and use you as “bazooka” practice! And if Hottywood catches you…well let me just remind you that he likes sharp objects and things that go BOOM!

If you are by chance an idiot who is guilty of anything listed above, then you’d better get off your ass and make some changes. You can do it. 90% of any effort is getting started.

This week I stumbled across a London meetup group called The Sock Mob – an urban exploration meet-up group to help the homeless on the streets of London.

Organiser Lidija Mavra writes;

We are a group of friends engaging with the homeless in London by cutting through the misconceptions, prejudice and fear that often accompany stereotypes of rough sleepers and other vulnerable groups in the city. We walk, sit and talk with them in a moment of mutual learning and trust, driven by the ethos of unconditional human contact and friendship.

And a simple pair of socks is all it takes to break the ice.

We meet usually once a week at a pre-arranged Central London location and follow a variety of routes for about an hour or so, bringing along any food, drinks and basic material goods we can to share with homeless people we meet. The main aim is to listen, talk and forge meaningful links with them in a completely non-judgemental and agenda-free way. The evening ends with a merry social and sharing of experiences.

We are not a charity, or formal group of any kind; simply friends with a desire to put humane principles into everyday, effective action. Anyone with good walking legs, an open mind and the willingness to be challenged and step out of their comfort zone can join The Sock Mob!

A simple idea that can make a huge difference to someone else’s life. And best of all anyone can get involved!

Twilight, Twitards, Twihaters… I probably wouldn’t care (or know so much about the books

Twilight, Twitards, Twihaters… I probably wouldn’t care (or know so much about the books/movies) if it weren’t for the fact that I CAN’T AVOID IT. Whether it’s pro or anti, Twilight news is eeeeeeverywhere. In the Bust newsletter, on my Youtube homepage, there’s even a thread on the Attachment Parenting website I frequent. And here I am writing about it… crap.

Team Jacob? Team Edward? I’m more of a Team Buffy. Or team Spike. Mmmmmm Spike. Thank goodness for the fact that my baby girl is too new for Twilight to ever be relevant to her life – I would have to teach her that vampires are for staking, not for sparkling. (As it is I will have my hands full preparing her for the zombie attack.. more on that some other day). Of course, by the time she is old enough for the teen-screaming-at-pretty-boys phase, there will be some other disturbing crap out for me to roll my eyes at. Or maybe (hopefully) she’ll take after me – I had my share of stupid teen heroin-chic crushes, but was more the type to draw angst-y journal entries over them than squee about it.

There are plenty of reasons to not like the whole Twilight phenomena. The little of the first book I managed to rad was CRAP. Terrible writing. Bella is frankly pathetic and a Mary Sue at the same time. If I encountered her in real life I would probably do my best to give her shaken-teen-syndrome. I got bored with heroines that passively wait to be rescued around the same time I learned to read. Edward strikes me as an Emo Ken (neutered vampires are just sad… remember when they were monsters?) with little to no emotional depth, designed to be pretty, brooding, and very little else. Which is enough for most teen girls (and many of their moms), it seems.

Some could point out that Spike from Buffy, who I mentioned earlier (once again, yum), could be described the same way. The difference is in the Buffy series, the writers go out of their way to crack the brooding facade and then point out how silly the whole thing is (The Season 7 episode with Andrew taping everyone is a perfect example of this… but only other Jossheads will get that one).

Of all the (manymany) reasons to hate Twilight, there are two thrown around that I find disturbing. The “OMG Stephanie Meyer is a MORMON!!!” thing is just sad. The author’s religion most likely has influenced the ideals in her books, but so far we still have this nifty little “freedom of religion” thing in America. There’s not a clause that says “unless it’s an unpopular religion”. There are plenty of things I could say about the role of women in the Mormon church, but I will never say that Mormon women should not be allowed to write wildly popular teen fiction.

Then there’s the popular “bad role model” argument. While I have already agreed that no self-respecting girl should want to be anything like Bella, it’s going overboard to say that being a fan of Twilight is going to ruin a girl for healthy relationships for the rest of her life. The same has been said about Barbie, about Disney princess movies, child-nurturing dolls… the list goes on. I firmly believe that if I raise my daughter with strong ideals, with the idea that she should always love and respect herself, and fill her life with good role models, that a little crappy pop culture will not ruin her mind. The best thing I can do to teach her a healthy relationship model is to live that model myself. To have an open and loving relationship with her father, and if something happened to end that relationship to continue living my life as a strong, self-respecting woman.

And of course, to teach her the importance of a long-distance head shot on a charging zombie. Gotta avoid that virus-infected splatterback.

*looks at title* Hmm.. pretty off topic today. So in Homebrewing news, I had my housemates crack open the first bottle of Bouncin’ Baby IPA to see how it was coming along (bottled 11-15-09). There’s a trace of carbonation, but it still has a way to go. I’m planning on it being ready right around my due date! Hurrah!

And in knitting… still killing myself on xmas presents. I’ve been making a lot of progress, but have been reduced to applying tiger balm and taking Tylenol on a regular basis. Traitor wrists. Once I am done with gift knitting, I have my eye on making this poncho with this stashed yard. And I really really am going to make myself some socks. This time I mean it. The Great Stash Cleanup yesterday unearthed three different sets of DPNs with the beginning of a ribbed sock cuff. I frogged them all and swore I will actually make some damn socks instead of an almost-wristband.
