The settings and storyline for for the chapter in chapter 5-8 vary because the settings take place just outside of windrixville up on top of jay mountain in an abandoned church. The characters are Dally,Johnny, pony boy,a guy named Jerry,Darry and Randy. I thought that the author did a good job on the characters and setting although the old abandoned church would be better in a horror book but other than that she did a great job with the setting. I think that she did great job on making a story line because with the fire and them in the church to save the kids because it shows that even the people you least expect to save a life will do the unexpected so it shows a great deal of bravery. so though the author did a great job on those chapters

Second Life is a virtual world developed by Linden Lab. Its users, or Residents, interact with one another via avatars. The Residents can explore the world, meet other Residents, socialize, and participate in activities. They can create and trade virtual property and services, or travel around the world, which they call the Grid. The game comes with a 3D modeling tool which allows Residents to build virtual objects. Along with what is called the Linden Scripting Language, they can add functionality to these objects. Thus, animations can be generated through this external software. 99% of the game content is created by its Residents. Second Life is “a persistent collaboration platform for its users.” (Benkler 136)

As the Residents interact, they begin to develop human-like relationships with one another. This phenomenon is an interesting example of social interaction mixed with massive capitalism. You can buy huge islands and make your own environment, something that is exclusive to a few individuals. (You have to spend a lot of time on this massive multi-player online game to get that far…) You can start your own Company and trade resources. For its Residents, Second Life is a world which enable users to virtually do things that they are not capable of in normal everyday life.

A British couple divorced after the wife discovered that her husband’s online avatar, was with another woman. Virtual woman, that is. Quoting the article below:

“It may have started on-line but it existed entirely in the real world and it hurts just as much,” she said. “His was the ultimate betrayal. He had been lying to me.”

Who would have thought? People got so into the game that they started building relationships that meant something to them. They would meet their online “friends” and start “dating” through this virtual world. Both people can make their avatars to whatever they want it to be. Whether it be a buff figure or size D’s, you can make your avatar be anything and do anything. Even “fall in love”.

Crazy-ness.

During the past decade, we have dramatically changed how we communicate with each other, how we inte

During the past decade, we have dramatically changed how we communicate with each other, how we interact with each other, and think of the world in context with one another. This is due to our increasing dependency on the industrial information economy. It has allowed a shift towards a new way or organizing and producing information and thus inevitably changing our lifestyles. Benkler calls this the “Internet revolution”. We are in an interesting position. Everything will likewise continue to change completely over the coming years. An age of fast-track spontaneity has already begun.

A question that has come up again and again: is the Internet a qualitative revolution? As Benkler puts it, “In some academic circles, it is positively naive. But it should not be.” (1) Going back to the basics: the Internet is based on TCP/IP and is packet-switched. This is more than a simple technical coincidence. The significance on this fact alone is crucial. It has given access to computers to the global mass, and allowed communication between computers to be common protocol. Benkler also points out that the Internet is a structured political system. I firmly agree with this. The Internet is the best modern-day example of democracy, due to three important factors: space, time, and reach. Let’s take a look at history:

Speech: synchronized in space and time, able to reach few to few
Writing: document in space, able to reach few to few at anytime
Printing: document in space, able to reach few to many at anytime
Telephone: anywhere in space, able to reach few to few, synchronized in time
Radio/TV: anywhere in space, able to reach few to many, synchronized in time
Internet: able to reach many to many anywhere in space and at anytime

Without a doubt, the Internet has and will continue to affect society as profoundly as did the invention of printing. I’ve noticed the impact of the Internet in business more and more so over the past few years. Information, communication, coordination, and computer software are significant components to the economy. For example, the company I’m working with starting using “guerrilla” marketing techniques. We’ve made thousands and thousands of dollars via Facebook advertising, and have used SEO/SEM tactics to climb our way to dramatically increase site popularity and visibility. We’ve used Youtube and Vimeo as a way of broadcasting viral videos to promote products and business alike, and have used e-Commerce solutions as a primary source of revenue.

With any great revolution comes great consequences. The consequences of TCP/IP are still being slowly revealed. Some common problems include privacy and security concerns, controlling social and business behavior, the issue of intellectual property, threats towards current financial and tax systems, another haves/have-nots divide, and an increasing possibility of monoculture. As Benkler tells us, “how these battles turn out over the next decade or so will likely have a significant effect on how we come to know what is going on in the world we occupy, and to what extent and in what forms we will be able to affect how we and others see the world as it is and as it might be.” (2)

To answer this question, we must first understand how Wikipedia.org works. Well, it’s an open-source project that anyone can come in and edit. It’s a tool that we can use to gather and distribute information quickly with ease. As Shirky puts it, it’s based on “spontaneous division of labor” (118) that grows based on incremental contributions from thousands and thousands of users. Shirky tells us that three factors drive Wikipedia:

1. Generally, we want to do good things.

2. We have a desire to make some sort of meaningful contribution to the world.

3. We’re animals. We want to leave our mark.

This is true. Example: I love my music. I’m one of those people who always send you Youtube links to videos on MSN Messenger. I’ve added a couple band pages here and there to Wikipedia because of my undying desire to promote their underrated existence. And of course – “CHENNY WAS HERE B*^@%#&!!” was definitely a strong element during the process.

So, how reliable is this thing? As soon as someone makes a change, the page could receive hundreds and hundreds of hits the moment it’s posted. People can flag a change and thus restore the page to its previous state. Someone can then come back in and say “no, that change was excellent”, and reverse the flag. It’s a project based on the “behavior of the collective” (128). Nothing is irreversible and each time something is done to any given article, a new version of it is saved.

Wikipedia is the new generation of web publishing, new age journalism and bloggers. When you’re reading something on Wikipedia, you’re trusting a stranger’s words. Not every posting is perfect the first time around. Be “buyer beware”. Follow the references. Anything that is unreferenced should be read with a pinch of salt. After all, a Wikipedia article is “a process, not a product, and as a result, it is never finished”. (119)

“When someone demands to know how we are going to replace newspapers, they are really demanding to be told that we are not living through a revolution. They are demanding to be told that old systems won’t break before new systems are in place. They are demanding to be told that ancient social bargains aren’t in peril, that core institutions will be spared, that new methods of spreading information will improve previous practice rather than upending it. They are demanding to be lied to.”

-Clay Shirky

The future of the PR industry is being dubbed as “citizen journalism”. With the rise of the new information age (specially, the Internet), anyone is able to post news stories using facilities that are no longer exclusively accessible by professional journalists. How so? These everyday posts are available to a worldwide audience. Unlike working journalists, these guys (aka. us, the bloggers) don’t really give two puddings about “journalistic principles” and the “business side of PR” because we’re producing material that’s free of the economical mindset. We have no finanicial interest. This is the beauty of blogging. It’s here, there, and everywhere. Anyone can blog at anytime (with no financial investment). When you’ve got a couple billion people at it, then gosh- that’s qutie a bit of circulated information. Take a look at the July 7 bombings in London. The first journalists on the scene were the citizens there. Some were being paid huge sums of money by taking photos on their mobile phones.

It seems that every week, there’s always some newspaper co closing it’s doors or going online. The traditional ways of PR are ka-put. Blogging poses a serious threat to the PR industry, but it could also be embraced. It is not a simple thing because it involves changing the entire businses model. But like the coming of the typewriter, sometimes it’s sink or swim. PR must adapt to survive, or fall between the cracks of online media. This sea of change is not the death of journalism but rather an entirely new generation of journalism.

It is human nature for us to form groups, which in turn forms communities, then societies. We form these links through communication. The internet allows us to communicate easily with strangers that we normally would never talk to. Through this we build connections, we share, and sometimes even collaborate. The power of the web is astonishing: it has become both a personal and intimate medium. For example: if you go on eBay and make a purchase, there is a section dedicated to “things YOU may like” or “recommended to YOU“.

The internet has become the most powerful way to connect. Facebook, Twitter, Myspace… people are gaining relationships in ways that we have never done so before. What drives me nuts is the idea of online dating. What happened to the ol’ approach-and-ask-for-coffee? Case study: a man sees an attractive woman on the bus. He is plugged into his iPod. Even though he can’t get his eyes off her, chances are- 99% he won’t do more than maybe give her a smile. However, if he were to have seen this woman’s image on a dating site like Plentyoffish.com, he would probably send her a private message asking for her MSN or email account so they can converse. Seriously, what the heck is going on?

The internet is changing the way we communicate. As an unconscious or conscious consequence, we are changing society. These online social tools have become central to many of our everyday lives. We use it for EVERYTHING. The internet has become a platform from which we LIVE.

Why? Because it is a basic human instinct to interact. The internet and the social tools it provides us with simply allow for “ridiculously easy group forming” (Shirky 54)

Whether you’re reading this book for the first time or the tenth time, Ponyboy will always capture your heart. He and his brothers are out of luck because they grew up on the wrong side of town, with the wrong friends and now they’re on their own. Darry, Ponyboy’s oldest brother gave up on his plans for college and a better life because he had to look out for Sodapop and Ponyboy after their parents died. Ponyboy just doesn’t understand why he has to be so mean. The Socs have got it all. They have rich parents and everyone thinks they’re perfect. Ponyboy’s gang knows better. They torment the Greasers and that usually leads to fights. It’s better when they fight with their hands, but sometimes they use knives and chains. A kid could get really hurt. Two-Bit, Steve, Dally, and Johnny will always have Ponyboy’s back though. One thing that really bothers Ponyboy is the shape that the Socs left Johnny in after they beat him up really bad for no reason at all. Johnny’s been scared and jittery ever since that happened. After Ponyboy gets roughed up by some Socs and saved by Sodapop he starts thinking about the future and the reasons that the Socs and the Greasers can’t seem to get along. Ponyboy meets a surprising Soc named Cherry Valance one night who makes him think maybe all Socs aren’t so bad. That same night something happens that changes Ponyboy’s life forever.

It’s easy to imagine Second Life (SL) as a enclosed, virtual medium which ramifications on “real lif

It’s easy to imagine Second Life (SL) as a enclosed, virtual medium which ramifications on “real life” can only be found through examples of online romance or love affairs (such as shown in the BBC documentary “Wonderful: Virtual Adultery and Cyberspace Love.”) For many, including myself, SL just seems like an R-Rated version of The Sims, where people go to have awkward virtual sex with one another. However, after my friend told me about her usage of the game, i realized SL goes far beyond being a place to play interpersonal fantasies. It has its own economy (which has currency in “real life” itself) and is fueled by a community of Prosumers, who sometimes exhibit great acts of generosity.

The status of SL as a Prosumer Community has allowed it to flourish as a virtual world. It is a place for creation and not just consumption where users can not only upload new content, but also engage in the game’s own e-commerce (as explained in “Wikinomics”, P.127.) However, what makes SL’s economy interesting is its “virtual” currency, the “Linden”, which has value outside of the game itself. By creating and selling virtual items (such as clothing and houses), Prosumers of this world can acquire Lindens, which can then be exchanged for other currencies, such as the Dollar. By allowing the Linden to be transferred outside of the game, the possibilities for how this “virtual” money is used becomes as diverse as the intentions of the people within the game.

Not everyone creates new SL content just to “make money”. For my friend, Megan, creating new clothing and throwing virtual fashion shows (complete with auctions) has become a vehicle for charity. She designs new outfits, finds users willing to model them, organizes details (such as music and show announcements), advertises for the event, and then puts the items up for auction- all for charity. Generous users can attend these shows, and bid on the items knowing exactly where their money is going. The combination of her time and other user’s money has made these charity fashion shows a great success, raising thousands of dollars for “The American Cancer Society” and “MSF/Doctors Without Borders.” Incredible, at one event, a dress sold for over 1000USD.

Although not all SL Prosumers are as charitable as Megan and her patrons, her story still exemplifies the enormous possibilities within this Prosumer Communities. Not only does she use and consume the product, but also contributes to it (through her clothing designs) and even shapes the culture of the game through her generosity. Her story changed the way I think about the game, and shows that Second Life is a place for consumption, creation and whatever else its users feel it may need.

It is very well known that the global semiconductor industry has had a year full of turmoil. The ongoing global financial has been not been of any help either.

The key question: Has the semiconductor industry really lost its money making touch?

According to iSuppli, facing dwindling profits, fewer opportunities to expand by taking market share from competitors and a shrinking roster of star performers, the semiconductor industry has entered a period of lowered expectations and diminishing options, forcing chip suppliers to rethink their basic strategies for success.

Thanks to Jon Cassell at iSuppli, I caught up with Derek Lidow, president and CEO, of iSuppli, to find out more about why the global semiconductor industry has become less forgiving. He has offered a range of suggestions for the global semiconductor industry to adopt and follow. The beauty of the advice lies in its simplicity, and I hope the industry is reading!

Facing dwindling profits and fewer opportunities to expand by taking market share from competitors and a shrinking roster of star performer, how difficult is the market today?

According to Derek Lidow, at the moment, the makers of electronics have started slamming on the brakes as they have decided that the financial turmoil will effect Christmas spending.

In this scenario, what strategies should the players: a) fabs; b) NAND; c) DRAM; d) materials devise, to ensure some turnaround?

Lidow says that the fab players should consolidate fabs to make them more efficient.

Both the NAND players and DRAM players should push out capacity expansion plans. Makers of devices should make variations of the existing products that customer would like to have, and don’t turn down opportunities to lock in orders for specials.

If semiconductors have actually lost their money-making touch, it is really an alarming sign. However, Lidow advises that the semiconductor business is maturing and every industry, as it matures, must undergo transitions.

Leaders can’t ignore looming changes
“Often, these transitions come as a surprise and many companies go through hard times,” he says. “Semiconductor companies don’t have to go through the turmoil of the steel or automotive industries if it doesn’t want to. The leaders of the industry just can’t ignore the looming changes.”

Is there a way that semiconductor companies break out of the current market dynamics to outperform the industry?

Lidow suggests the semiconductor companies should STOP doing things that they are not good at! He adds: “Each company will have to follow a recipe that eliminates where they are mediocre and focuses on where they add real value. Next, they should change their business models so that semiconductor technology is the tool, not the objective.”

According to him, designing more total systems with system-level chips built around proprietary Intellectual Property (IP) should be enough.

He says: “The electronics industry is $1.5 trillion dollars in size, and the semiconductor industry is $270 billion in size. There is a lot more value to capture. However, the value is more complex to unlock and requires as much or more software expertise as it does semiconductor expertise. They have to get married together to succeed in developing proprietary IP.”

Areas to outspend rivals
As for the areas where companies can massively outspending rivals in areas of products and manufacturing, these would be leading edge wafer foundries, memory chips, and the most complex system-on-chips (SoCs).

Why won’t this massive outspend simply to maintain technical and scale dominances in competitive market segments be risky?

Lidow says you can only use this strategy if you know you can outspend your rival! “We see the problems of a spending race in the memory market where many companies are trying to keep up with Samsung’s massive investments and it is hurting everyone,” he points out.

iSuppli has also advised adopting a scalable acquisition process that would allow a semiconductor company to grow by buying other companies or selected parts of companies.

Lidow says: “I think the point of my article was that there haven’t been any success stories to date. So, this strategy is unproven, but very tantalizing, considering the state of the maturing industry.”

If a musician writes a records and doesn’t upload it onto Myspace, does it make a sound? Well, sure it does, but before the advent of the internet (for the average person) this sound was limited in the distance it could travel and number of ears it could reach. However, now with online communities and the easy transference of digital information, people can create music and have it heard by almost anyone with a computer all over the world- assuming they network as well. Being online isn’t enough. It’s necessary to share and connect to one another- not only open up the possibility of finding a larger audience, but also to create opportunities to socially collaborate with others, something I learned first hand through using Myspace.com.

Although this networking site lacks a decent search engine or efficient tagging system to classify its musical content, the “Top Friends” section (a selection of links to other people’s pages) makes up for a lot of the organizational short-comings. I’ve found if you enjoy one group’s music, often someone in their “Top Friends” will suit your fancy as well. Using this method of browsing by association has lead me to numerous bands I really like, including a one man industrial act out of Los Angelas, entitled “Birth!” After “randomly” finding his profile on Myspace I became an avid fan, and looked forward to the chance of seeing him perform live in person. Eventually, an opportunity for this did arise. However, my involvement with this show would not be passive as I originally suspected. He was hoping to do a West Coast Tour and asked for my help in organizing a show in Vancouver. Having the summer off and needing something to do with my time, I decided to go beyond helping out with just one in town show and ended up touring with him as a “Roadie” from Portland to Vancouver instead.

Despite what Oprah tells you about online strangers, this turned out to be a great decision and the entire trip ended up being a lot of fun. Naturally, we had our mini-disasters along the way, including having to cancel a show due to a medical emergency, which also cut short our time to work on a music video together. However, I’d still consider the entire experience a success and a good example of the possibilities of collaboration over the internet, made possible through linking. If Tapscott and Williams believe that obscurity (and not piracy) is the real problem for artists, then my story affirms this. Sharing your work, being open and connecting to one another online can lead to opportunities you’d never come across when refusing to engage at all. We may not have found the financial gold mine talked about in “Wikinomics”, but that’s alright. Since when does adventure and friendship have to be an economic endeavor?

(The boys from South Park are told to go make “Internet Money” and turn to youtube for help…)

The prospect of finding financial success seems awfully alluring and distinctly possible after reading about the horizontal economic structure found and easily facilitated through the Internet. Tappscott and Williams explain in their book “Wikinomics” how principals such as openness, peering, sharing and acting globally are the new models for business, and how the old ways of “closed” enterprising are rapidly becoming outdated (20.)

(They go to collect their money from the video, and meet a variety of other online sensations…)

When considering the success of a site such as Youtube.com, their confidence in the Internet seems well placed. It is an enormous financial achievement, despite the fact it offers little more than a free online space for its users to create communities and upload their own creative works. Yet, in allowing it’s users to generate the site’s content and connect to one another in this vast cultural video pool, the company has shown how profitable Wikinomics can be.

(They finally recieve “payment” for their work…)

However, sites such as Youtube also exhibit some of the (current) shortcomings of the web. Tapscott and Williams speak of “economy for all” (33), but as the episode “Canada Goes On Strike” shows us, its not everyone who comes to profit from this medium. The boys from the small town of South Park, Colorado, soon discover being an online phenomenon doesn’t mean you’ll be compensated for the actual revenue your work generates.

(Kyle’s final thoughts on what they’ve come to learn…)

Yet despite this, it is still worth considering what the internet does offer. In the past, to have access to an international audience would require you to have a major contract with a network (like South Park does.) Now, anyone can exhibit their work, be part of a niche market and colloborate with (almost) anyone, anywhere. The internet may have its pitfalls, but rather than abandon it, it would be worth appreciating it for what it does still offer, and always remember: there are other places to upload your videos, apart from youtube. -Allison (SOCS300)

I have known Montu Makadia, Director and Country Sales Manager, EVE Design Automation Pvt. Ltd, sinc

I have known Montu Makadia, Director and Country Sales Manager, EVE Design Automation Pvt. Ltd, since his days at eInfochips. It was interesting to learn more about the company and its strategy for India over the coming years.

For those who came in late, EVE offers a broad range of hardware-assisted verification solutions on the market, from acceleration to fast emulation and prototyping, with the most cycles per dollar. EVE products lead to a significant shortening of the overall verification cycle of complex integrated circuits and electronic systems design.

EVE products also work in conjunction with popular Verilog and VHDL-based software simulators from Synopsys, Cadence Design Systems and Mentor Graphics. Its sales headquarters in the United States is in San Jose, California. EVE’s manufacturing, R&D and corporate headquarters is located in Palaiseau, France.

Estimating the Indian semiconductor industry, Makadia said the global semiconductor market continues to grow, driven by the demand for consumer-oriented electronic devices. The Indian semiconductor industry, in particular, appears quite strong and is an attractive market opportunity for EVE.

“That’s because of its push into digital media, telecom and mobile communications markets that presents tremendous growth opportunities for companies such as EVE,” he said.

According to him, industry watchers should see strong growth in semiconductors in India in the coming years, propelled by smaller process technologies, multi-core architectures and the ever-increasing software content in system-on-chips (SoCs). With more SoC designs, the demand increases for hardware/software co-verification solutions.

EVE’s belief in the Indian market has been so strong that EVE Design Automation Pvt. Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary based in Bangalore, was formed in 2007. EVE DA markets and supports the Zebu (for ‘zero bugs’) hardware-assisted verification platforms of accelerators, emulators and FPGA prototypes.

ZeBu enhances SoC performance
So, how exactly does ZeBu help analyze, benchmark and measure performance of the system-on-chip (SoC) over realistic scenarios?

Makadia said: “We have been really successful last year promoting the Zebu based emulation platform. Our existing customers, as well as new prospects in India, have shown great interest and recognized real value in adopting Zebu, not only for hardware verification but also for hardware and software co-verification.

“The Zebu platforms enable software validation and co-verification in a range of several megahertz, thus replacing the deployment of ASIC or prototype boards. For instance, we booted operating systems, e.g., Linux and WinCE, on processors designs mapped into ZeBu emulation platforms at 10-20 megahertz using a transactor-based verification methodology.”

How can EVE’s ZeBu be the choice of startups who need first-pass silicon success? Makadia added that startups in need of first-pass silicon success and designers worldwide have found that emulation tools such as Zebu are the only option for debugging hardware and testing the integration of hardware and software within complex SoCs.

He noted: “This is especially true when the task calls for executing billions of cycles in less than one hour and there’s a need for full visibility into the hardware. The ability to track hardware and software interaction offered by Zebu is considered a plus.”

ZeBu helps to analyze benchmark and measure SoC performance with realistic scenarios by running at speeds well above one megahertz. It is capable of executing complete test scenarios within an acceptable timeframe and just shy of running in real time.

This is interesting, and further examination needs to be done to evaluate how the emulation segment is performing and where it is evolving, especially, in India?

Makadia said: “After several years of stagnation, the overall market for emulation has been growing due to escalating complexity in hardware and in embedded software. Other factors have made emulators attractive once again. They run faster, are easier to use, have smaller footprints and are cheaper than older generations.”

The growth trend for emulation and hardware/software co-verification solutions will continue in the foreseeable future, especially in India.

Speaking on EVE’s overall strategy, he added that the company will continue to introduce even better performing emulation platforms through innovative architectures and enhanced supporting software to increase adoption by all market segments of the electronics industry.

Further, EVE is evaluating strategic partnerships and possible mergers with various synergistic companies to expand the attraction of its offerings.
