Biografie:

Aşa cum statisticile stau mărturie, ABBA este formaţia provenită din afara spaţiului anglo-american cu cel mai mare succes pe plan mondial în întreaga istorie a muzicii pop. Melodii simple şi captivante, orchestrate cu pricepere şi  bun gust, armonii vocale perfecte şi două soliste pline de farmec. Cam acestea ar fi argumentele primordiale care au stat la baza popularităţii imense de care s-au bucurat cei patru suedezi. Popularitatea lor nu a durat doar pe perioada existenţei grupului, ci s-a prelungit pe parcursul deceniilor care s-au scurs de la desfiinţarea sa.  ABBA a reuşit să cucerească toate pieţele muzicale importante din Europa, inclusiv pe cea britanică, de obicei destul de reticentă la orice vine din afară. Nu şi cu ABBA, care a realizat o serie de numai puţin de 17 hit-uri de Top 5 între 1974 şi 1982, dintre care nouă au fost no. 1. La acestea se mai adaugă şi nouă albume clasate deasemenea pe prima poziţie. În Statele Unite situaţia diferă în bună măsură, cu doar patru intrări în Top 10, între care un singur no. 1 (“Dancing Queen”, în ‘76), însă şi aceasta este o performanţă rar întâlnită în cazul artiştilor proveniţi din Europa continentală.

Istoria ABBA îşi are originile în 1966, când Benny Anderson (keyboardist în grupul beat Hep Stars) şi Björn Ulvaeus (chitarist şi vocalist în grupul folk-rock Hootenanny Singers), devin cuplul de compozitori ai companiei Polar Music/Union Songs. Patronul acesteia era Stig Anderson (1931-1997), un renumit compozitor pop suedez al anilor ‘50 – ‘60, ajuns mai târziu manager al celor de la ABBA. Din 1969 Benny şi Björn au început să colaboreze cu două vocaliste, Frida (pe numele real Anni-Frid Lyngstad) şi Agnetha Fältskog. Cele două le-au devenit mai târziu partenere de viaţă (Björn şi Agnetha s-au căsătorit primii, în 1971). Agnetha si Frida aveau la activ cateva hit-uri single în Suedia, la finele anilor ‘60, iar Benny şi Björn înregistraseră un album ca duo, Lycka (1970). În 1972 cei patru au realizat împreună single-ul “People Need Love”, folosind o titulatură complicată: Björn And Benny, Agnetha And Anni-Frid. Succesul obţinut în Suedia de acest single i-a determinat să continuie în formula respectivă. În ‘73 ei au fost desemnaţi să-şi reprezinte ţara la festivalul Eurovision cu cântecul intitulat “Ring Ring”. Acesta s-a clasat atunci doar pe locul 3, dar a devenit hit în câteva ţări europene. A urmat un album de debut, numit tot Ring Ring, bine primit în Scandinavia. Ulterior s-a adoptat o nouă denumire pentru formaţie, ABBA, acronimul iniţialelor celor patru componenţi. În aprilie 1974 cvartetul a participat din nou la Eurovision, prezentând piesa “Waterloo”. De această dată ABBA a câştigat clar concursul, iar “Waterloo” a ajuns  no. 1 în Marea Britanie şi a intrat chiar în Top 10 în Statele Unite. LP-ul eponim era lansat în aceiaşi perioadă pe plan internaţional.

Mulţi au ezitat să-i ia în serios pe ABBA după acest succes, prevestind că sunt doar “one hit wonder”. Însă după aproape un an şi jumătate formaţia a obţinut încă un hit major în clasamentele din mai multe ţări, cu single-ul “S.O.S.”, extras de pe al treilea album, autointitulat. Apoi, la finele lui ‘75, “Mamma Mia” a devenit cel de al doilea no. 1 britanic din cariera ABBA. Anul următor i-a consacrat definitiv pe suedezi ca star-uri mondiale, cu hit-uri ca “Fernando”, “Dancing Queen” (aşa cum spuneam unicul no. 1 american) şi “Money, Money, Money”.  În noiembrie ‘75 era lansată o primă compilaţie  Greatest Hits, ce devenea primul no. 1 al trupei în topul britanic de albume. După aproape un an apărea şi cel de al patrulea LP de studio, Arrival, ajuns deasemenea no. 1 în Regatul Unite. În perioada respectivă ABBA asimila în muzica sa elemente disco, fapt ce a contribuit probabil la menţinerea succesului la scara largă al formaţiei. Seria hit-urilor a continuat cu piese ca “Knowing Me, Knowing You” şi “The Name Of The Game”, în ‘77, sau “Take A Chance On Me” şi “Summer Night City”, în ‘78, precum şi cu încă un LP, botezat ABBA: The Album. Tot în ‘78 era prezentat în lumea întreagă filmul artistic  “ABBA: The Movie”, iar Benny şi Frida s-au căsătoresc în sfârşit, relaţia lor durând, după cum se ştia, deja mai mulţi ani. La numai câteva luni însă, celălalt cuplu, Björn şi Agnetha, a divorţat.

Cvartetul a lăsat deoparte pentru moment problemele intime şi în 1979 a lansat un al şaselea album, Voulez-Vous, ca şi o a doua compilaţie Greatest Hits. Alte cinci single-uri intrau în perioada respectivă în Top 5 din Marea Britanie: “Chiquitita”, “Does Your Mother Know”, “Angeleyes/Voulez-Vous”, “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!” şi “I Have A Dream”. Şi LP-ul următor, Super Trouper (1980), a avut un impact favorabil, aducând alte două hit-uri majore, “The Winners Takes It All” şi piesa de titlu.

În 1981 Benny şi Frida au divorţat şi ei la rândul lor, în această situaţie destrămarea grupului fiind iminentă. La finele anului a apărut ultimul album din discografia ABBA, The Visitors, acompaniat de single-ul “One Of Us”, la rândul său ultimul hit major pentru cvartetul suedez. Determinaţi poate şi de primirea mai puţin entuziastă de care a avut parte The Visitors, cei de la ABBA şi-au anunţat oficial despărţirea la începutul lui 1983. Deşi în mai multe prilejuri au existat zvonuri legate de reunirea formaţiei, aceasta nu s-a mai înfăptuit niciodată până în prezent, chiar dacă membrii săi au fost ofertaţi în repetate rânduri cu sume extrem de tentante.

Benny şi Björn au continuat să activeze împreună în calitate de compozitori profesionişti. Cea mai importantă realizare a lor de după desfiinţarea ABBA a fost musical-ul  Chess, în 1984. Rezultat al colaborării cu celebrul libretist Tim Rice, Chess a fost reprezentat pe West Est şi pe Brodway şi a generat hit-ul “One Night In Bangkok”, interpretat de cântăreţului şi actorului scoţian Murray Head. Cei doi compozitor au mai scris ulterior alte două musical-uri: Kristina Fran Duvemala (1996), în limba suedeză, şi Mamma Mia! (1999), bazat pe hit-urile ABBA. Benny Anderson a realizat deasemnea două albume sub nume propriu la finele anilor ‘80, pentru ca din anii 2000 să realizeze o serie de CD-uri cu Benny Anderson Orkester.

Frida a înregistrat sporadic albume solo, cel mai important fiind Something’s Going On, din 1982, produs de celebrul Phil Collins. În ceea ce o priveşte pe Agnetha, aceasta a avut şi ea câteva hit-uri minore în anii ‘80, pentru ca în 2004 să realizeze un bine venit come-back cu albumul My Colouring Book, cel mai bine vândut din cariera sa solo.

În vara lui 2008 a avut loc premiera filmului “Mamma Mia!”, bazat pe musical-ul cu acelaşi titlu scris de Anderson şi Ulvaeus. Din distribuţie fac parte actori ca Meryl Streep şi Pierce Brosnan.

While no official statement has since been made that the band has split, Liam Gallagher stated in an interview with The Times that “Oasis is no longer”. Well I say, thank fuck for that.

I can honestly say that Oasis are/were one of the most overrated bands of my generation. Now before I rip them to pieces I’m going to shamefully admit that they can write catchy songs that get stuck in your head like fresh chewing gum sticks to your new pair of jeans; the numerous #1 chart successes and overwhelming album sales over the years only support this. That’s about it though.

The thing is, despite how catchy a majority of their singles are, they’re more or less recycled with a little change here or there from previous releases. I mean, I’m aware of the saying “if it’s not broken don’t fix it”, but come on. Musicians are meant to experiment to broaden their capabilites and potentially improve their sound and broaden their fanbase. ‘Wonderwall‘ sounds more or less like ‘Stop Crying Your Heart Out‘, which more or less like ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger‘, which then sounds very similar to ‘Lyla‘. You can agree with me or not, and every artist will have material which all sounds alike because that’s their chosen focused sound – but this band have/had been going for 15 years and there has been minimal expansion or development.

It’s not like they’re particularly nice people either, everyone knows the Gallagher brothers are utter bastards. They think they’re “all that” and they can’t even sing that well. They sound like they’re boiling nails in their throat, but truthfully it’s probably the whole “rock ‘n’ roll” lifestyle which makes them sound like throat cancer patients. The way they bend over with their hands down their back when they sing in the microphone looks just, well, I’ll put it mildly and say they look stupid. Good thing they’ve split though, eh?

Oasis, sort your life out.

Fan made videos are the best, don’t you agree?

Glowbug1953 on youtube has been busy making videos of their favorite American Idol artist – Adam Lambert.

It’s cool to see the fans and Adam interacting with one another.

You don’t see too much of that with singers that have been on stage after a few years?

Why is that?

Some artists develop this snobby attitude that once they’ve made it, that the fans can kiss their a**?

I think Adam’s really doing a great job with the PR work here.

I added Kris Allen because they are both doing a marvelous job showing support to their fans.

Make sure you sent them a letter in the mail or a card, letting them know you appreciate them and the work that they do.

I hope he keeps it up for a very long time.

That was one of the cool things with Elvis Presley, he loved people and always stopped to say hi every now and then.

He knew the importance of how to treat the fans.

The theme of Break Up is that Mr. Yorn and Ms. Johansson are at the back end of a passionate romance. Yorn’s inspiration for the songs was Serge Gainsbourg’s collaborations with Brigitte Bardot in the late ‘60s. I have no idea what the Gainsbourg/Bardot duets sound like, so I have no basis for comparison. Yorn and Johansson lack romantic chemistry, so the torrid break up isn’t all that convincing. However, I love the songs, I’m blinded by the mildly retro sound, and I think the duets are great—despite the lack of flame. Also, I like anything by Pete Yorn.
